[meteorite-list] GET OUT OF JAIL SALE

2005-05-27 Thread Finmet

Hi All

Please take a moment to look at these pictures of a large 35 kilo individual
Seymchan Meteorite.

Please note that I cut a small corner off this whopper to see what the
inside consisted of. The cut surface on the smaller 2840 gram piece was
polished and etched to Museum quality standards. The small piece is apx.
160mm x 105mm x 85mm in dimensions. The whopper end of this is over 32 kilos
of gorgeous metal and pallasite mix. Please check it out on this link .

http://Meteorite.photosite.com/Seymchan/Seymchan_35_kg-10.html

I'm looking to partially recover expenses made on my last Oman trip. Which I
spent a few days in jail and 6 weeks detained at my own expense . Believe me
the VODKA is very expensive in that country !! I have well over 40 cents a
gram invested in this individual (both pieces) and will consider all offers
over that figure
Here is some info about this meteorite.
Two masses were found in 1967, total 323 kg. It was classified as a coarse
octahedrite, bandwidth 2.0 mm(iron llE). We went there in June of 2004 to
try and find additional pieces. During that expedition we recovered several
pieces of different sized Seymchan individuals. Our recent finds show that a
few pieces of this meteorite is comparable to Glorietta Mountain in that it
contains
NUMEROUS
OLIVINE
CRYSTALS It was a big
surprise after cutting some of our initial finds to find that a few
individuals contain olivine crystals
and show a nice pattern. This meteorite is absolutely stable, will not rust
after cutting. The linked pictures of this individual show it has a gorgeous
highly unusual widmanstatten pattern and a lot of pretty olivine
crystals. It is interesting that some individuals contain olivine while most
others do not contain olivine. Some individuals have surface with fusion
crust like Sikhote-Alin, some looks like Chinge, and some looks like Sikhote
shrapnel. Right now the Seymchan meteorite is being researched and
reclassified.
It is very difficult to recognize which pieces contain olivine
crystals and how much there are within without cutting them. Pieces with the
olivine crystals are uncommon. This can be a good opportunity for someone to
make a good profit on sliced up material.
Please if you have some interests contact me privately at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Very Nice John! Thanks for sharing it.

Hello John, Bill, and List,

John, your thin section pics have always been high class but
these are outstanding. A resounding bravo from Germany! Angrites
look so modest but are a kaleidoscope of wonderful colors under
crossed polars. Wish I had one of these thin sections with their
multitude of brilliant white anorthite laths, with those colorful,
zoned pyroxenes and olivines ... There are two tiny angrites in my

Hello list,

Could we do with a little less anti-Steve posting, PLEASE?

To those doing the posting, I think all of us know how you feel about this
subject. Ask yourself, what effect am I having on Steve? If you think
the answer is none, then why would you continue to bombard the list with

And to be honest, Steve's e-mails are meteorite related. E-mails about

[meteorite-list] 1 More Anti-Steve Posting

2005-05-27 Thread Meteoryt.net
I try explain this on a example.

When You sit in front of Your computer reading met-list post, You are not
alone.
There is small fly over You.
For alot of time You not see or hear it.
But then You start hear
This start making in Your head hole, bigger and bigger.
And finally You stand up, taking newspaper and start runing on Your room
like crazy trying kill this ugly fly. But why ? Its only little poor fly
that try to escape from Your room. It will not eat You or not destroy Your
walls.

here is the same situation. We not notice Steave emails as spam for alot of
time, but finally this start disturb some persons. We try explain Mr Steave
this situation, but it looks like he not take us serious.
Noone say that Mr Arnold CANT send here any ADs. There is no problem to send
ADs one time per week instead one time per day, so why he dont do this ?
From my point of view he do not have respect to me and other list membes, in
case we asked him to change frequence of his ADs.

Other problem is that his ADs are not interested. For me, daily ADs can send
Farmer, Hupes or Ralew. They have nice newly classified meteorites, nice
photos that You can watch, learn something new etc. Unfortunatelly Mr Arnold
micro pieces of polular meteorites have level of curiousity 0 (zero).
His ADs have no comercial or collectors value, so I really dont understand
why we must read them every day.

Maybe Steave Defenders side can enlight me ?

Im looking for further information on the Karelian fireball sighting from
tuesday 17th of may. Last available information was that the Finnish experts
worked on plotting a final trajectory. I would appreciate information about any
progress in this issue. If you are in contact with one of the researchers

[meteorite-list] AD - Planetary sale of exceptional specimens

2005-05-27 Thread Jim Strope

Hi All...

I am trying to raise some money to fill my gas tank so I thought I would put
together some exceptional offerings to help with the cause.

NWA 482 Lunar specimen with fusion crust plus NWA 482 thin section. Rarely
offered with fusion crust:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=6535445054

NWA 998 Martian specimen with fusion crust plus NWA 998 thin section. Also
rarely offered with fusion crust:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=6535472473

COMPLETE SLICE of DAG 735 Martian. Freshest of the paired grouping
according to a German scientist who has studied them all. When was the last
time you saw a complete slice:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=6535460841

Last COMPLETE SLICE of NWA 2046 Martian. I own the main mass and do not
intend on cutting any more. This is a good opportunity to get it while you
can at a reduced price:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=6535511234

COMPLETE SLICE of NEA 001 Lunar. Adam, Greg and I bought the nicest pieces
of this meteorite a couple of years ago and this is the first time I have
sold any. The only other piece I currently have is a half-individual and I
have no current intentions of cutting it.

Need a digital camera cheap? Sony Mavica FD91, I took lots of meteorite

[meteorite-list] Goodbye list!

2005-05-27 Thread Martin Altmann
Marcin,

my last 2cents to this issue.

Summary:

List listen to the Fly-Fighter and Clairevoyant Martin Edmund Altmann:
Soon all, who have smth for sale will claim equal rights for all.
If Mr.Chicago is allowed to advertise daily or even more often, there is no
reason for others not to do so too.

We will have 500-1000 commercial emails by day.
Then we can forget this list.

Proposal:
The two months before the last member will have left, I suggest, the list
moderator, should ask for each ad 1$ fee,
at least to honour his effort to have supplied us for so long time with
that, what we'll have then to call in retrospective,
once to have been the best meteorite forum on the globe.

My personal view:

on this list are almost all internet meteorite dealers and many
dealer-collectors as well as collectors, who naturally have from time to
time smth for sale.
Imagine now, what will happen, if each of them would post daily his/her
offers to the list and would give a note, if a specimen was sold?
We would have several hundreds of emails per day, only with commercial
contents.

But, as I at least believe, this list was founded as forum to discuss
topics about meteorites, to help, if someone has questions, to share
interesting articles and
literature, to keep the members updated about recent developments in
research and actual observations of falls, to help to learn about
meteorites, meteorite hunting, preparation and and and...

For sales exist 6 more lists, where ads explicetily are welcome.
Nobody will have anything against, if Mr.Chicago advertises there each day,
why he has to molest so many members on this meteorite-central-list?

Regardless of the person of Steve Arnold, Chicago - nobody is angry, if
someone offers something for sale or trade, but not 30 mails per month, most
containing even always the same specimens!
Why for God's sake, he can't combine his offers in a single ad per week?

To write every day an ad is unfair angainst all the dealers, who are
disciplined and advertise sparsely even if they have immense amounts of
material for
sale and it's in my eyes absolutely impolite towards all those, who asked
him so
many times to reduce his spam, as they feel disturbed by this.

Or in modern words: It's pure terrorism.

Hi List, in case you are wondering why I think this could be meteorite
related.
Not only do they have a new Nickel deposit by Lake Superior but also at
Sudbury!
http://www.datametallogenica.com/pages/newsflashes/newnickel08072004.htm

So I was wondering, if they have a NI deposit at a known impact site, if
Lake Superior could be an impact site too? If you look at figure 4 on

Tom, most of that nickel related to impact sites is very very old, like
in the 3-4.5 billion years old and back 4 billion years ago there wasn't
much here but some very nasty volcanic oozing going on.

And... tonight I am taking my slutty girlfriend out to McDonalds for

 Hello Walter

What I learned in school about vulanism is that the atmosphere on earth
was
created by volcanic action, (primarily the water content with carbon
dioxide, and of course, the acids). Entrapped gases that researchers refer
to may be like these basic gases along with some exotics. Or, that the
entrapped gases reflect the atmosphere that they see today plus those
gases
that outgas (and lost due to too little gravity) once exposed.

As far as I know from cosmic ray penetration, I would have to assume that
there is some measure of extrapolation involved to arrive at the original
size of the rock prior to atmospheric entry. This is much the same as
trying to age glassy rocks based on the rind caused by weathering. The
determinations have to be based on local conditions, there is always some
measure of error because of loss of rock mass, and conditions change over
 time.

And because the time spent exposed to cosmic rays are based on penetration
depths, and all we have are models for the mathmatics to determine
ablation
(no one has a true measure of the size of any given meteorite prior to
entry), any age determined has to be a best guess.

  Hello Everyone,

I been researching but I can't find the answers to two questions.

First, what is the mechanism by which atmospheric gasses
are trapped in the formation of basalts? I have been doing some
lit reviews on martian meteorites and I find it interesting that some
were formed in magma chambers deep undergound. indeed, some are
thought to have formed several kilometers down. How does the
Martian atmosphere get trapped in cooling rock so far underground.

Second, when determining Cosmic Ray Exposure ages, can atmospheric
fragmentation and ablation of a meteoroid affect the results from
such testing and if so, how are fragmentation and ablation taken into
  consideration when determiniing CREs?

Thanks to anyone who can help me understand these processes.

Hello Al and list,

Al note: Perhaps if the anti-spam Steve posts were aimed directly to

It would put a lot less hateful e-mails in my inbox, and was the note of my
concern.

However I feel if Steve is allowed to post all of these ads then certainly
people who don't agree should be allowed to post their concerns related to
his spams.

I am surprized you would support a hate mod on a scientific forum.

Others should be allowed to express their opinions. However, I bet if
someone counted the archives...there are about 2000-3000 of these e-mails,
(no joke). I think most would agree that there has been no censorship in
this reguard.

I will also note, that Steve's e-mails are not spam. Spam is a legal word,
it means unsoliciated e-mail. You can not get unsolicated e-mail from a
group you have joined.

Yes, I do find them annoying quite at times. Yet, If I felt them annoying
all the time I would simply block him. This is pretty simple. It takes 3
to 4 clicks of your mouse to block someone.

If Steve's e-mails upset you, block them, delete them or the like,
complaining to the list for the 3000th time, seems foolish to me. If you
are one that gets upset everytime you read one of his e-mailswell don't
read them.

Those that keep attacking Steve look worst then Steve from my side of the
fence. If I was to boycott some list members, I would do so accordingly.

I was just going to let this go, but seeing some folks not understanding how

I was actually taken in by a request for some Franconia irons a few weeks
back which I hunt for and find myself here in Arizona, by Steve. Now I hunt
these and take pride in my finds and picked out some very nice little irons
and also a slice of about 1.5 grams or so of the H5 chondrite thought to be
the source of the small and very unique irons and sent them to Steve as a
gift thinking he would add them to his collection.

A few days later they show up for sale on ebay...Didn't sell there so he put
them in his sale...Needless to say I felt sort of stupid and taken for the
proverbial ride. This was my first and LAST experience with Mr. Arnold. I
emailed him asking about it and got no reply.

Yes it is true that they are his do with as he pleases, but I feel I should
have been told before sending them to him that he intended to sell them and
not keep them. His pretence was owning some for his collection in his
request. Alas I am fond of learning some things the hard way, but just once

Re: [meteorite-list] No More Anti-Steve Posting Please

2005-05-27 Thread JKGwilliam

Hello Bill and List,
Some of you might not know Bill Southern since he is relatively new to the
Meteorite List. I know him personally. He's a really great guy and is one
of the most accommodating and selfless people I know. Take note of what
he's saying - I know he had to twist his own arm quite hard to speak up on
this issue.

Maybe those of you that shake your finger at the naysayers need to take a
look at this Steve issue from a different angle.

There are many of us within the meteorite community who think it is our
responsibility, in part, to make sure the public is dealt with fairly and
honestly and that is one of the reasons Steve Arnold is scrutinized the way
he is. I find it hard to believe that those of you that openly support
Steve because he gave you a freebie or he acts like a generous benefactor
refuse to look at his other activities without your rose colored glasses.

Sure, there are some things about Steve that make him a likeable guy to
some people, but I know many others who have had negative dealings with him
and their voices have a right to be heard too.

Finally, I don't think any of you anti-naysayer have the right to censor
those who speak out about wrong doing or excessive self promotion by a
list member. Do you condone the deceit and dishonesty?

Feel free to comment,

JKGwilliam

Hi Mark and all,

Perhaps if the anti-spam Steve posts were aimed directly to Steve email
it would be better. However I feel if Steve is allowed to post all of
these ads then certainly people who don't agree should be allowed to post
their concerns related to his spams. (and there is certainly others who
violate the list rules related to ad posting).

I think that people should be aware that steve has a nasty habit of
breaking his specimens. Although I know of others who do this, I doubt
that steve is using a breaker. I have no doubt that steve has ruin a
number of good specimens and the people who support him, buy from him,
take him up on his free offers, are supporting this vandalism to
priceless meteorites. You are in effect in partnership with someone who
is destroying some fine meteorites. If Steve were a real dealer, he would
invest in a breaking device, or saw and cut these specimens rather than
commit the horrible demise of some fine specimens.

People that sell to him and people who buy or accept free offers have no
real interest in meteorites.

Re: [meteorite-list] THANKS SO MUCH

2005-05-27 Thread Michael L Blood
Hi Steve,
Please do not use my comments to justify ignoring the overwhelming
number of complaints about your continual advertising on the list. It is
clearly in violation of list rules. Just because you do not bother me,
personally, does not make it ok. You have taken advertising on the list
to an absurd level. One person pointed out you posted ads 22 times in the
first 22 days of May.
Personally, I restrict my own advertising to the list as tightly as
possible - and as often as not, related to topics that naturally arise on
the list. I TRY to keep it to 6 times a YEAR or so, though I suspect it
sometimes creeps up to a dozen times a year. I think people who advertise
on the list once a week are excessive. You are so far over the top it
defies the imagination.
The point is, I exercise restraint out of respect for the intention
of this list and consideration of the readers. Your actions, especially in
the last few weeks, do not. You have been in violation of the rules and
you have rudely ignored complaints from a huge number of list members,
many of whom were very polite in asking you to conform to list protocol.
So, Steve, do not use my name in justifying
inconsiderate and abusive use of the list. It only goes to show how
poorly you interpret input. Just because I respect you as a human being
and do not think you should be abused like a dog does NOT mean I
approve of all of your actions. And just because many of the people who
have given you feedback on your obscene level of advertising have been
demeaning of you, does not mean their objections are unfounded. You
should also note that at least half of the negative feedback you have
gotten has been extremely polite - even gentle. But you ignore it all.
Steve, you have some great qualities, but often strengths can also
be weaknesses. One of your strengths is to not allow others to define
you. That is a great strength. HOWEVER, it becomes one of one's greatest
weaknesses when one refuses to consider input - even when it comes to you
from an overwhelming number of people.
If you choose to stay in denial in spite of a deluge of feedback,
that is your business. But do NOT cite me in your justification!
Best wishes, Michael

Hi Mark,

I would surmise that a good portion of these anti-Steve e-mails are
being generated in an attempt to prompt Art to kick him off the List.
That would solve the ridiculous number of posts about Steve's ridiculous

2005-05-27 Thread Gtceb
Mark:
Deleting Steevvee's posts is not the answer. We can nitpick about the
definition of spam (which is like picking the flysh*t out of the pepper), but
if
SSTTEEVVe was sending the list MULTIPLE UNWANTED pictures or links of himself
and
a friendly Chihuahua, or offers to sell you pics of him and his friendly
Chihuahua and a meteorite (to make it meteorite related), though you belonged
to
the list, would it not be considered offensive and not appropriate (spam) by
most list members? The answer is yes from where I sit. Take a good hard look
at Bill's post below. When SSTTEEVE rips people off (or politely misrepresents
himself for the live and let live crowd), this goes way beyond an odd for
sale post. He is a detriment to the meteorite community (imagine a newbie
buying one of his 3 for 1 sale meteorites only to find out that he got
screwed).
Then the person tries to write SSTTEVE, but does not get an answer. Buyer
beware? No. That person does not buy again. Acceptance of Steve's bad habits
(hit the delete key, et al.) are an endorsement of his behavior to his feeble
brain. He has no reason to stop because a few people say good job
SSTTEEVEY. The list is not SSTTEEVY's personal sales blog (I assume you agree
with
that), or information seeking blog, or lonely married person blog, or person
with
no friends blog, or here is my trip to Mexico blog, etc. to torture list
members whenever he sees fit.
My opinion. Nothing personal to you.
Terry
StarMeteorites

I was just going to let this go, but seeing some folks not understanding how
this fellow operates I have decided to tell a short story about my first
dealings with Steve A. from Chicago (Elgin) IL.

:)

[meteorite-list] ads on the list

2005-05-27 Thread Dave Harris
Hi,
just my 2 micrograms does it REALLY matter if people advertise on the
list? Personally, i find a lot of the dealer websites out of date and highly
priced and my best deals have come from the list.
IS it really so much trouble to delete them? Hey, why not do what I do and
get a daily digest instead and then scanning for ads is easier.

I much prefer ads than the Farmer/matteo scraps and slagging-off.

Are we next going to approach Meteorite magazine and boycott them for
advertising?

Does it really matter?

I think that the temperament of some listees and the inability to get them
permanently moderated is far more serious and has much further and serious
ramifications.

As someone pointed out, Although Steve A. relentlessly posts, the tap-backs
for him doing that are far more egregious than his emails flogging stuff.

Just lighten up!!!

It's just a hobby to most, you know!

Best

Hello Everyone,

ARG! Everyone keeps quoting Steve, defeating my blocker.

One person writing numerous posts on the same topic ad nauseam is spam - by
anyone's definition.

Many people writing single posts concerning the one person is a legitimate
complaint.

It's not the absolute number posts that is the problem, it is the number
being generated by one person on the same topic vs. the number being
generated by many persons on the same topic. One may complain about the
number of responses being generated by Steve's posts but keep in mind those
responses are originating from multiple individuals - not a single person.

Art, do you have an opinion on this? You wrote the list rules.

recently i had made some changes in my account. OK...i have a new credit
card so had to change the number. This person linked me to a list which a
had to fill in to compare the statistics with the old stuff. This list
looked unbelievable real 'couse it was really on the paypal website, at
least it appeared to be! If i did'nt fill in this form with the right
things my account could be canceled. I filled it in...until i came to the
part where i had to fill in my card number. All numbers stayed visible for
reading instead of the little dots that usual appear. One more line down i
had to fill in my pincodeWRONG!!! This is where i became suspicious
and i thought it was time to contact paypall. They were shocked by the
professionality this spam sh..t was made and they will start a serious
investigation.
BE PREPARED!! Keep your eyes open and don't just answer these mails before

It is a good idea to make sure that you have disabled your email client's
ability to display HTML. Doing this makes it much easier to see if you are
the target of phishers, since you can't spoof a URL in plain text. The

[meteorite-list] List as bad as blog!

2005-05-27 Thread Tom Knudson
Hey list, the blog sucks because everyone hides behind fake names, I am
beginning to think the list is getting there too! I posted about a new
Nickel deposit and had a conversation with Devon Slater that quickly
turned into an argument complete with insults. Later today I checked the
blog, and sure enough, he took it over to the blog. Then, I noticed that his
email address is [EMAIL PROTECTED] I also looked in the List
Archives and found out in the past three months, he has only posted a few
times and each time it was to fight with someone.
I am thinking that with an address like his, he is not a real person,
just another person that has to hide behind a fake identity so he can be
hateful. I think, as a list we should not tolerate fake identities on the
list or it will end up as bad as the blog.
I was really disappointed when I realized it was only a coward, I thought
I finally new who I wanted to meet in Tucson to tell him in person what I
thought of what he said about my daughter! : (

[meteorite-list] My take if it's ok... On Steve Arnold

2005-05-27 Thread Bill Southern
I was just going to let this go, but seeing some folks not understanding how
this fellow operates I have decided to tell a short story about my first
dealings with Steve A. from Chicago (Elgin) IL.

:)

Yes, it sucks, but you did it to yourself. Ebay and Paypal NEVER solicit
email to you with a hotlink back to any site that they manage. PERIOD. The
I didn't know the gun was loaded excuse does not work online. There are
very few people who would ever have answered that email.

This rule applies to ALL legitimate financial institutions in the US. That
includes credit card companies, banks, credit unions, mortgage lenders...
Any company that holds your money or other funds in escrow with an account
number.

You should submit the mail header of any financial company that appears to
violate this rule to the Department of Commerce. Never copy yourself and the
sender in this email, because then they at least get a legitimate email
address back, which will certainly breed more attacks.

Hello Bob, John, and List

Thanks and I figured there were others that had the same experience and
although I refuse to surf on the wave of slams I do see that perhaps those
folks have had similar jolts or rude awakenings somewhere along the way
Dealing with this person and well.

I just felt that I should mention my experience simply because early on
after I joined this list to learn about meteorites, which by the way I am
and have found more good information here than anywhere on the net. I just
didn't understand why the poor guy was under constant harassment that to
an outsider or newbie to the list may seem as totally unjust as it did at
times to me, but I have an open mind.

I agree now with some that it is good to expose such underhanded dealings to
protect others and this I believe is one of the very reasons for this list.

It is also important to expose some of the respected dealers here from time
to time for their great service and willingness to go out of there way for a
good customer. Some names come to mind here, but this is not the time (grin)

I mean the man no harm, but also I want to perhaps help make sure someone
else doesn't have to go through getting their little feelings hurt like I
and others have (grin) Heck to someone that goes out into these deserts to
look for and find these specimens they are...Well important (to me anyway)
and science too ;)

Hello Bill and List,
Some of you might not know Bill Southern since he is relatively new to the
Meteorite List. I know him personally. He's a really great guy and is one
of the most accommodating and selfless people I know. Take note of what
he's saying - I know he had to twist his own arm quite hard to speak up on
this issue.

Maybe those of you that shake your finger at the naysayers need to take
a look at this Steve issue from a different angle.

There are many of us within the meteorite community who think it is our
responsibility, in part, to make sure the public is dealt with fairly and
honestly and that is one of the reasons Steve Arnold is scrutinized the
way he is. I find it hard to believe that those of you that openly
support Steve because he gave you a freebie or he acts like a generous
benefactor refuse to look at his other activities without your rose
colored glasses.

Sure, there are some things about Steve that make him a likeable guy to
some people, but I know many others who have had negative dealings with
him and their voices have a right to be heard too.

Finally, I don't think any of you anti-naysayer have the right to censor
those who speak out about wrong doing or excessive self promotion by a
list member. Do you condone the deceit and dishonesty?

Feel free to comment,

JKGwilliam

RE: [meteorite-list] Information on a meteorite

2005-05-27 Thread Matson, Robert
The cracked egg-shell crust, light-colored interior, and overall
shape certainly support the claim that it is meteoritic. Interesting
(if true) that it is entirely unresponsive to a magnet. Of course,
I guess that depends on the quality of the magnet. LL's aren't very
attracted to refrigerator magnets, but their paramagnetism is easily
felt with a rare-earth magnet. --Rob
