3th in Germany on ebay write iìon

 its forbidden???

 Matteo

Its forbidden by law in Germany Matteo, just as here in Holland its forbidden to
sell Mein Kampf by law. You can get it under the counter but anyone offering
it in public risks confiscation and juridical prosecution. If anyone would make
a complaint to German justice about the items you found on German eBay, these
dealers would be in big trouble. So don't use them to justify yourself.

In itself there is nothing wrong with an HISTORICAL interest in such items, and
not everybody collecting these kind of items is necesarily a Neo-Nazi or
Fascist. Sadly enough however, still many of the buyers are all too ignorant of
history, and buy it for reasons of veneration.

The question now is, whether YOU are ignorant of history, Matteo, and of these
connotations and sensitivities. As you come from a former Axis country, you
should be carefull (please note: I do not say that you and/or civilians from
former Axis countries are all still worshipping Fascism. I do say, that
civilians from former Axis countries should be very sensitive to their context
of history and the impression their acts make on outsiders, including civilians
from countries that were occupied by the Axis. That is the burden of being born
there, I am sorry). Do you want to portray yourself as a person with ethics and
a sense of what is appropriate, or do you just want to make unscrupulous money?
Its a bit the same as weapons trade. There is a market for it, allright, that in
some contexts is fully legal, in others isn't. But does this justify being
active in that market?

I take some offence to the fact that you tried to defend yourself by pointing to
Stalin. I fully agree that Stalin was a mass-murderer too. So was Pol Pot, or
Mao, or Bokassa, or Idi Amin. But that does not make Adolph Hitler more acceptable.

I leave it with this as this does not belong on this list proper. But you should
be more sensitive Matteo, to the connotations of what you offer for sale, and if
that attracts critique, that is the result of the choices you made yourself. And
you, only you, are responsible for that. It are YOUR choices.

Matteo, do you really think, that a discussion is needed??!

As we wouldn't have enough problems, and in especially Italy too, with
fascists and neo-nazis.
Who do you think will buy that card?
It's a huge difference between somebody selling or collecting let's say
coins, stamps, books ect. as all stuff from that times is
swastika-festooned,
and this postcard and this glamourising happy-bithday-Hitler-devotional
article.
You want to make money with that card - 900$, you will make business with
persons, who adhere to an inhuman hateful ideology,
who costed the life of millions and millions of victims.

Remember the scandal some years ago, where a person wanted to make big cash,
in bringing the clothes of an concentration camp prisoner to an auction
house. - will you say now, where was the problem - collecting historical
costumes is an collecting field like any other too??

Be better soon.

[meteorite-list] Meteorites in temples

2005-09-04 Thread Marco Langbroek

One of the sad things about being a specialist in
one feild of science means that you tend to not
have much knowledge of/interest in other feilds. I
often wonder how many meteorites paleontologists
have walked over in the desert, and how many
valuable fossils meteorite hunters have walked over.

This is certainly true.

Concerning meteorites, archaeological research and Greek temples: one has to
realize that quite some excavations of such objects were done at a time that
meteoritics as a science barely existed, and archaeologgy itself was in its
infancy. Can you blame a 19th century archaeologist for not recognizing a
meteorite, when he worked at a time that scientists were not unanimous about the
fact if meteorites even really existed?

Today, it also depends a bit on which subfield it concerns. Classical
archaeology tends to be less multidisciplinary oriented (but there are
exceptions, I should haste to add). Prehistoric archaeology on the other hand,
often is multidisciplinary oriented (and archaeology should be in my opinion - I
have a PhD in archaeology by the way). In modern prehistoric archaeological
research, it is quite normal to do an analysis of the lithics found, as this can
for example point you to trade networks of raw materials. And meteorites have
been found in this way: one was found among the stone infill of a pit in the
British hillfort of Danebury for example. The meteoritic iron artifacts from
Hopewell mounds are another, wel known example of course.

2005-09-04 Thread Alexander Seidel
Well said, Marco! There is a saying here in Germany that wer im Glashaus
sitzt, sollte nicht mit Steinen werfen, translating to whoever is sitting
in a glass house should not throw stones, which is well applicable in this
case. This goes out to Matteo and all the the people who try to benefit or
make profit in some way from the relics of a very dark area, which we should
still be ashame of. May be it has become a problem of education and age
right now after the turn of the century, but that does not make up an excuse
after all.

By the way, on the other topic of the cultural heritage re coins and old
tempel finds, I disagree with my dear collector friend Martin Altmann from
Munich in his rather personal assessment about the intentions and goals of
the Meteoritical Society, but on the other hand I, just like him, don´t
understand why obviously nothing is done about these historically most
important artifacts towards answering the very questions they raise.

Dr. Grossman et al, your opinions on this would be welcome.

Alex
Berlin/Germany (..btw: also member of the MetSoc:-))

Its forbidden by law in Germany Matteo, just as here in Holland its
 forbidden to
sell Mein Kampf by law. You can get it under the counter but anyone
 offering
it in public risks confiscation and juridical prosecution. If anyone would
 make
a complaint to German justice about the items you found on German eBay,
 these
dealers would be in big trouble. So don't use them to justify yourself.

In itself there is nothing wrong with an HISTORICAL interest in such
 items, and
not everybody collecting these kind of items is necesarily a Neo-Nazi or
Fascist. Sadly enough however, still many of the buyers are all too
 ignorant of
history, and buy it for reasons of veneration.

The question now is, whether YOU are ignorant of history, Matteo, and of
 these
connotations and sensitivities. As you come from a former Axis country,
 you
should be carefull (please note: I do not say that you and/or civilians
 from
former Axis countries are all still worshipping Fascism. I do say, that
civilians from former Axis countries should be very sensitive to their
 context
of history and the impression their acts make on outsiders, including
 civilians
from countries that were occupied by the Axis. That is the burden of
 being born
there, I am sorry). Do you want to portray yourself as a person with
 ethics and
a sense of what is appropriate, or do you just want to make unscrupulous
 money?
Its a bit the same as weapons trade. There is a market for it, allright,
 that in
some contexts is fully legal, in others isn't. But does this justify being
 active in that market?

I take some offence to the fact that you tried to defend yourself by
 pointing to
Stalin. I fully agree that Stalin was a mass-murderer too. So was Pol Pot,
 or
Mao, or Bokassa, or Idi Amin. But that does not make Adolph Hitler more
 acceptable.

I leave it with this as this does not belong on this list proper. But you
 should
be more sensitive Matteo, to the connotations of what you offer for sale,
 and if
that attracts critique, that is the result of the choices you made
 yourself. And
you, only you, are responsible for that. It are YOUR choices.

[meteorite-list] Coins on meteorites

2005-09-04 Thread Martin Altmann
Yes Alex, my words were to harsh.

On the other hand, everybody knows, that he stone is on public display since
the 80ies in the museum.
The few mentions of the stone in web, tell that the stone was proven to be a
meteorite, although no publications are available
and of course that statement has nothing to say.
And ihmo that somebody with an official backround should take a glimpse on
that stone, should have for the Meteoritical Society a higher priority than
to nod through the 2347th H5, especially as it costs almost not a thing.
Beside the chemical, petrological excellent knowledge the Met.Soc members
undoubtly own and that the research on that exotic matters has of course the
highest pertinance and importance, I think the subject meteorites per se is
so small, that the history of them should be of course part of it and that
in this case one even can't speak of a multidisciplinary endeavour.
It's funny - the stone molders in the museum at a tourist frequented place,
and on the other hand enormous efforts are done since decades to hunt
stones in Antarctica.
So instead to scold them I's better should beg them to go there. It's a
comfort, warm corner of the world. Very scenic, great classical monuments,
finds and archeological sites to visit, salubrious mediterranean cuisine,
easy and cheap accessible via Paphos airport
and finally you all could take a refreshing bath in the Sea after work.
Hence somewhat less stressing and more distractive, than to crawl around in
a cold tent on the
icy end of the world :-).

Sooo, let's do something constructive. Some of the classical coins depicting
meteorites, you'll find online here (there exist many others not listed
there).
http://www.coinarchives.com/a/

It's searchable and there are also coin descriptions on German, so search
for example for:
Paphos AND ston
Paphos AND stein

stone
stein
baetyl
baithyl
omphalos
meteorit
in combination with (AND) the four most popular localities.
Emesa
Emisa
Sidon
Seleukia
Seleukeia
Seleucia
Phoenik
Phoenic

will bring many results.

Another searchable coin database is
http://www.wildwinds.com/coins/index.html

Much fun.

A poor picture of the stone in the museum, you find here (not that one with
the bird).
http://www.geocities.com/Athens/9854/PageAph.html

Another not better one here:
http://www.indigogroup.co.uk/edge/blstone.htm

Some informations about newer excavations:
http://www.hist.unizh.ch/ag/paphos/project/index.html

Unfortunately I can't find anymore a more detailled report online.
Perhaps s.o. from Met.Soc may contact those archaelogists: Maier, Näf
Wartburg ?

Here's the museum - so if you plan a holiday...

Sanctuary of Aphrodite - Palaipafos Museum
Kouklia village, 14 km (9 miles) east of Pafos
Tel: (06) 432180
Daily: 09:00-17:00 (Summer: 09:00-19:30)
Entrance fees: C£0,75

All the Best.

Is there a recent photo of the Emesa (Paphos) stone available? A good

Does one exist in any of the literature?

Hi all,
the specimens that I put images of on my website that I obtained from Pareja

This surprised me a bit as I had a specimen that I purchased as NWA 869 at
the beggining of the year that was mainly a dark brown matrix with light
grey and some yellowish chondrules in it. Is NWA 869 so different in it's

Dear List,
I am sorry for losing it when I saw the Happy
Birthday card to Hitler.

Back to meteorites:

In Japan and China there are several temples and
shrines that house meteorites. I have seen two in
Japan and spend my spare time searching nearby Tokyo
for others. Japanese collect rocks for gardens and
most pre-war houses still have rock walls or rock
gardens. Recently in China a meteorite was discovered
in Xian in an ancient city. Martin thank you for all
of your information concerning European Temple Stones.
BTW I have a silver Celtic coin that appears to have
three objects falling from the sky...I don`t know
where it is now but perhaps can find it if someone
wants to see a photo.
Best Always in LIFE, Dirk...Tokyo

Hi Martin and List,
Is there a recent photo of the Emesa (Paphos) stone available? A good

Does one exist in any of the literature?

[meteorite-list] Mars Exploration Rovers Update - September 2, 2005

2005-09-04 Thread Ron Baalke

http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/status.html

SPIRIT UPDATE: Studying the Summit - sol 584-591, Sept 02, 2005:

Perched on the crest Husband Hill, Spirit took images for a
summit panorama and used instruments on the robotic arm to
investigate soil targets.

Science team has compiled a list of experiments they would like
Spirit to execute while the rover is on the summit. This list
includes:

o Assess the inner basin and image potential drive paths
o Assess the surrounding terrain and image Cumberland Ridge
o Routinely observe the atmosphere during the day and the moons
  at night
o Study undisturbed soils, scuffed soils, and drift deposits
o Study the structural geology of Husband Hill, including dips
o Observe outcrops and rocks
o Take images for a rover self-portrait
o Complete a panorama on top of the Columbia Hills
o
Finalize exit strategy
Spirit has already completed some of the above observations. It
has taken frames for the self-portrait, looked at soil targets,
and imaged the two moons of Mars -- Phobos and Deimos -- twice.
After completing the initial summit imaging, Spirit drove
southeast to another point in the crest area to assess more of
the Cumberland Ridge and surrounding terrain.

Sol-by-sol summaries:

Sol 585 (Aug. 25, 2005): Spirit performed remote sensing
operations, did a Moessbauer spectrometer integration, and
imaged Phobos and Deimos.

Sol 586: Spirit performed remote sensing operations, did a
Moessbauer spectrometer integration, and imaged the rover
deck.

Sol 587: Spirit changed tools from the Moessbauer spectrometer
to the alpha particle X-ray spectrometer.

Sol 588: Spirit continued with robotic arm operations using the
microscopic imager and alpha particle X-ray spectrometer.

Sol 589: Spirit retracted the alpha particle X-ray spectrometer
and stowed the robotic arm. The rover backed away to image the
area where the robotic arm had been working, then drove to the
southeast. Drive distance for the sol was 21 meters (69 feet).

Sol 590: Spirit continued the drive in the east-southeast
direction for another 14.2 meters (47 feet).

Sol 591: Spirit turned to point the UHF antenna for better
communications with the Odyssey orbiter. Spirit performed remote
sensing at South Point 1.

As of the end of sol 591, (Sept. 1, 2005), Spirit has driven
4,862 meters (3.02 miles).

OPPORTUNITY UPDATE: Cautious Recovery - sol 566-573,
Sept 02, 2005:

Recovery from the sol 563 power-off event is well underway.
Each sol, the team has planned one new activity. By sol 570
(Aug. 31, 2005), the rover had successfully performed
observations with the panoramic camera, navigation camera,
and miniature thermal emission spectrometer and had completed
a short alpha particle X-ray spectrometer integration (with
the robotic arm stowed) and a 6.5-meter (21-foot) blind drive.

Additional precautions are being taken with each sol's plan,
including shutting down after the morning uplink (to save the
high-gain antenna position, thus preventing an X-band fault in
case of another anomaly) and waiting 15 minutes after wakeup to
start any science activities.

Sol-by sol summaries:

Sols 566 through 568 (Aug. 27 through Aug. 29, 2005) were devoted
to engineering activities. Science activities were put on hold
over the weekend while engineers investigated the sol 563 reset.

Sol 569: Spirit completed step two in the post-anomaly recovery
plan: a short blind drive. (Step one, remote sensing with the
panoramic camera and navigation camera, was performed on sol 565).
The 6.5-meter (21-foot) drive executed perfectly, and all motor
currents were nominal.

Sol 570: This sol marked the first use of the miniature thermal
emission spectrometer since the sol 563 reset, which was step
three in recovery from the anomaly. After waking from a nap and
waiting 15 minutes, the rover performed a short alpha particle
X-ray spectrometer integration with the robotic arm stowed. This
was simply to test the payload service board, which controls the
spectrometers. Five minutes after the end of the alpha particle
X-ray spectrometer test, a low-elevation raster was taken
successfully with the miniature thermal emission spectrometer.
The resulting data product has been received on Earth.

Sol 571: Spirit completed a blind drive of 11.8 meters (38.7 feet)
designed to take it across some outcrop then over a small ripple.

Sols 572 and 573 (Sept. 2 and Sept. 3, 2005): Commands sent for
these sols are for observations with the panoramic camera and
navigation camera.

Opportunity's total distance driven on Mars, as of Sept. 2, 2005,
is 5,755 meters (3.58 miles).

http://www.aerolite.org/1000.htm

It is a receipt from the American Red Cross Hurricane Relief Fund 2005
for $1,000. That is the amount of money which I sent in today -- a
direct result of your very generous contributions to our charity
raffle. I had to list my own name, as the transfer came from my
account, but I listed Meteorite Community as the company, and that's
something I hope you can all feel very good about. I also hope we'll be
able to send in a lot more $$ during the coming week.

I received more than ten new prizes today, and photos will be added to
the charity raffle website tomorrow. These include rare Nininger books;
excellent meteorite specimens from the Michael Farmer Collection and
Impactika; a two-year subscription to Meteorite magazine; with more
items on the way . . . and we are working on a special surprise
super-prize which I hope to announce tomorrow.

We are still accepting donations of meteorite-related prizes.

Raffle ticket sales continue at

I will post another update tomorrow.

Thanks to everyone who is supporting this venture.

...[etc].

Sorry Darren, but I think you are pretty naive here.

You cannot pretend a Hitler autograph is in the same category as one of say
Marylin Monroe; just an item of historical interest. Hitler memorabilia are
quite often not collected because of their historic value or because Hitler was
and is famous.

Let me put it clearly: Hitler memorabilia are quite often collected by people
that march in the streets on the birthday of Hitler, dressed in black leather
boots with bald shaved heads and carrying red, white and black coloured flags
with thinly disguised swastika's, shouting slogans like Auslander aus!. These
prints of Hitler hang over their beds, along with flags with not-so-disguised
swastika's, and these people will deny the holocaust when you talk with them in
private.

If you get the chance, you should visit Dresden or another Neo-Nazi stronghold,
preferably on a date that has Nazi-historic connotations. That will open your eyes.

Now this might not mean much to you, but it means much to many Europeans, both
nazi victims and their children who are second generation war victims (and I
know all too well what that means...) as well as historically sensitive
civilians of Germany and the former occupied territories. History is not neutral
here in formerly occupied Europe with regard to the Nazi era. That era is still
very close, and the suffering was immense and goes on untill this day. It barely
is history in that sense, it is not something that is over and done with.

Why do you think that countries like Germany and my country (Holland) have laws
that prohibit selling Mein Kampf or publicly showing swastika's? You do realize
that Holland is (in)famous for being very liberal in many things do you? Why do
you think we are not so liberal on this point? The answer is above.

Again, I reiterate that the critique Matteo has gotten, is the result of his own
choices. He should *know* how sensitive these things are. If he chooses to
ignore that, he'll have to bear the critique and accept that people will condemn
him. That has been his own willing choice.

How can you tell when Matteo is whinning? His mouth

Mike made a good point Matteo--if you go back and
look at the archives
of your posts they fall into 5 categories

Whine about Ebay (40%)
Whine about High Prices (2%)
Whine about low prices(4%)
Whine about the list (33%)
Brags about your adds, sales, finds, collection,
or acquisitions(19%)
Always followed by a whinne!

Try to get control of yout attitude and your
reality. There is mnore to
life then meteorites.

Most Sincerely,
Elton
