In 1995, Killgore gave up his job as a plumber to become a meteorite
prospector. He now has one of the world's premier private collections,
including one lunar specimen valued at $8 million that he located with
the help of Bedouin nomads.

NWA 773, which I guess he's discussing with the journalist here, has a
TKW of 633 g; at $8 million value, this comes to $12,638/g. The same
type of lunar gabbro material can be purchased for a few hundred per
gram today.

AW: [meteorite-list] Prospectors, Scientists Vie for Rocks More Precious Than Gold (Meteorites)

2006-02-28 Thread Martin Altmann
Hi Ron,

The solution was (and still is) evident.

A single space shuttle start costs 400-500 million $.
With only 1 or 2 percent of that sum, the institutions could have bought
easily all meteorites from Morocco, which appeared during the last 5 years
completely. (+ hiring Da Boyz Stefan, Martin, Andi to be the agents).

If the meteoricists weren't able to point out to the budgetary accounting
institutions, that the scientifical benefit of acquiring all those stones is
much higher or even equivalent to one of the 114 space shuttle missions, but
that it can be achieved at only a hundredth of the costs,
then I think that they are not in the position to run down private persons,
because they possess meteorites or that they purchase meteorites.

I could imagine, that there might be some legal obstacles, which could
afford a cooperation with the Sahara states, which might be politically
undesirable with the hysteria at present,
but that it would be all about the money is implausible.

I'm googling around but can't find anywhere the annual budget of ANSMET ?
Only sporadically some figures. In 2003 the expedition's costs for a 6 week
hunting period of a single person is given with $ 120,000. Hence 6 weeks on
ice of a single team costs 0.7 Mio$.
(for that sum our Dean Bessey would deliver 15 metric tons of chondrites
right to the door, wouldn't you Dean?).

So it's not about the money.

Buckleboo!
Martin

They wonder how many new finds they'll get access to before the space
rocks
are sliced into collectible fragments and disappear into private
collectionsThis is something that has always bothered me.

That goes for any rare meteorite, or even a nice common one. But if the
museums and researchers can't come up with money to buy them from
collectors, and researchers won't go out and find them themselves (or
finance hunting groups), I don't know whether there is a solution. Maybe
Canada does have the answer!

 Article quoted the following:
 .

I think 20% or 20 grams is pretty generous. Some dealers exceed this
expectation and others don't. The ones that don't should be forced to
adhere
or lose official status on their stones.

 My Question:
Isn't this same thing happening with Fukang?, a rare meteorite sliced into
ever smaller pieces and put on the market. Some were falsely claiming
Fukang
as being a new type of ungrouped Pallasite. Donors to the Southwest
Meteorite Center get a nice little slice of Fukang presented in acrylic if
they provide enough capitol to the organization. Why isn't Fukang being
preserved as a main mass for presentation and study?

Is something wrong with this philosophy or I am missing something here?

[meteorite-list] Ad - More Great Auctions - eBay

2006-02-28 Thread Greg Hupe

Dear List Members,

I have a bunch of great eBay auctions running at the moment. I even have a
lot of worthy unclassified Saharan individuals starting at just 99 cents
under my seller name, NaturesVault.

Besides the unclassified material, I also have somewhat larger specimens of
rare classified meteorites this week so you may want to check out what I
have offered. I will be away for a week so I won't be able to answer any
questions during the auctions. Be sure to check in next Wednesday, March
8th, as I will have some great classified planetary material available.

To see these and all that I have available, go to eBay and search for items
by seller, NaturesVault. Home of the rare ones!

Best regards,

[meteorite-list] Ad - Excellent Auctions Ending - Check it Out!

2006-02-28 Thread Adam Hupe
Dear List Members,

I have several excellent auctions ending in a few hours, most still
bargained priced! I added many new and different items over the last couple
of weeks so you may want to take a look. A lot of great meteorites
have not even been bid on yet and are still at just 99 cents opening bid.

To see all of the auctions click on this link:
http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZraremeteorites

Here are some of this week's highlights:

Check out this little two-axis Sikhote Alin Bullet. Like a real bullet, it
spun on its axis while coming in at hypervelocity:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=6607714506

All of these great items still have no bids and were opened at just 99
cents. Somebody is going to get a great deal on many of these:

The Best Oriented Sikhote Alin Bullet with 360 degree flow lines currently

the best example I have left:

Introducing a Beautiful New Acapulcoite, NWA 2989. These four examples are
all I have left that are over a gram. 14 of 18 are already sold. This is it,
last chance to get an awesome deal on the best prepared material on the

I do, however have a few impressive individuals priced below what they would
cost me to replace. I am also nearing the end of NWA 869 individuals in
inventory. In Tucson, a Moroccan would not budge at .20/gram and the
quality was no where near as good. Very little was to be had at the show. Be
sure to check out the 8.5 kg Monster by clicking on the links below:

Sterling,

Thanks for posting this series! One question though:

Item #5: It would also appear that no one tried
breaking a specimen of each, as the fracture
morphology of each differs.

In what way? I've never tried breaking specimens, but
I've seen plently of broken ones and have never
noticed a difference. As amorphous glass, both
obsidian and tektites have a nice conchoidal fracture.

However, now that you bring it to my attention, I can
imagine a theoretical difference: since most obsidian
does have tiny crystallites, and tektites have
absolutely none, tektites should have a smoother
fracture surface, relatively free of stair-steps.
I'll have to go check as soon as I get this written.

As an interesting aside, various obsidians were
esteemed for varied uses in the stone age. Varieties
packed with incipient crystals flaked more crudely
than more pure glasses, but because the tiny crystals
obstructed the growth of fractures, tools made of such
impure material were tougher. Better coarse, heavy
duty implements could be made of this. More pure
glasses made for perfectly flaked extra sharp
arrowheads, but they were essentially one-use items as
they broke very easily (there being no crystallites to
interfere with fracture growth).

Is this the sort of difference in fracture morphology
to which you refer?

Thanks,
Norm

Hi,

Part Two of
THEORIES OF THE ORIGIN OF TEKTITES

Passing through the Colossally Silly Entrance Hall,
we next enter the
extensive and colorful Volcanic Tektite Exhibition.

5. The Terrestrial Volcanic Origin of Tektites:
Mayer, in 1788, published
the first scientific tektite theory; he called
moldavites glassy lavas.
Charles Darwin, in 1844 (The Voyage of the H.M.S.
Beagle), first described
australite buttons and identified them as
obsidian. He wondered a great
deal about their unique shape, but became distracted
by some issue or other
in biology, so the world lost a great tektite
theorist.
The volcanic theory became as predominant in the
19th Century as the Impact
Theory is today. It was endorsed by Wickman, 1893;
van Dijk, 1879; W. D.
Campbell, 1906; La Conte, 1902; and Moore, 1916 (who
said tektites were
identical to Pele's Tears); Simpson , 1902,
proposed Australite tektites
came from Krakatoa. Dunn, 1908 and 1912, proposed a
complicated formation of
tektites inside of gas bubbles in fresh lava, a
suggestion further developed
and complicated by Buddhue in 1940, while Dunn then
later (1935) suggested
tektites were formed by rain and snow falling on
molten lava.

The volcanic theories all died when geochemical
analysis advances in the
20th Century, as tektites have a composition that is
quite different from
any terrestrial volcanic rock, and tektites are
easily distinguishable from
obsidian. It should be pointed out, in defense of
Darwin and all the early
geologists, that just from the standpoint of holding
a tektite and obsidian
in your hand and looking at them, they appear to be
materially identical.
Chemical and physical analysis is required to
distinguish them. It would
also appear that no one tried breaking a specimen of
each, as the fracture
morphology of each differs.

However, the last Terrestrial Volcanic Theory was
proposed in 1976! It is:

6. The Cryptovolcanic Origin of Tektites: McCall,
1976: To understand this
at all, we need to dig into the strange tribal
relationships of science.
British geologists (we invented geology, you know)
were firmly wedded
(possibly even welded) to the volcanic origin of
craters, all craters, of
all kinds, on all worlds. An immense amount of
energy and thought had been
invested in lunar volcanic theory in particular, up
through the 1950's.
Those who learned their geology at British
institutions (Australians, New
Zedders, and so forth) were trained in this
tradition. The notion of that
some craters on the Earth or elsewhere might have
been formed by heavy
objects falling out of the sky was regarded as a
crackpot theory put forward
entirely by brash and uninformed colonials of the
American variety who were
well-known to be fond of whizz-bangs (child-like,
you know), and the
impact theory was resolutely

Dear Ron and M Fans:

It was posted to the List, a while back, that existing M subs would,
in fact, not be refunded. Instead, the balance on those subs will by
honored by the new incarnation of the magazine which is being helmed by
Larry Nancy Lebofsky, and Derek Hazel Sears.

Larry is a member of the M-List and will have more up-to-date info than
I do, but during a recent correspondence he told me that the February

Taking over an international publication is a tremendous amount of

[meteorite-list] February Issue of Meteorite Magazine

2006-02-28 Thread Larry Lebofsky
Geoff and all:

Please remind me not to go away from my computer for a few hours again (had
some meetings to go to)!

Geoff, thanks for responding.

Nancy and I finished the proofing of Meteorite about two weeks, so the magazine
is now in the capable hands of the publishers Hazel and Derek Sears. The
magazine is at the printers and should be mailed out soon (I cannot give you a
firm date, but please be patient as this is our first issue).

As Geoff also said, existing subscriptions will be honored for the coming year.
If you still have concerns, please contact Hazel Sears directly at:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Also, as Geoff said, we are already working on the next issue of Meteorite
which should be out in May and we hope back on schedule. A few people still owe
us articles -- you know who you are :o)

Let me take this opportunity to thank all of the people (and there are many)
who have helped us keep Meteorite magazine going. Editing a magazine is new
experience for us and we could not have done it without the support of many of
you out there. Thanks to all of you who have made this an enjoyable experience.

I hope you all enjoy Meteorite when you get our first issue and I hope to hear
from many of you as Nancy and I look for articles for future issues.

Larry

Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorite Magazine- New Issue?

2006-02-28 Thread Dennis Beatty
I had a similar experience to that which Ron describes below. Last summer, I
renewed for two years...just in time to find out that the magazine was going
away. I was pleased to find out that it would continue to be published and
figured that I had two year's worth of reading ahead of me. Until, that is, I
received the letter stating that I had received a refund (I hadn't) and needed
to pay for 2006.

I sent off an e-mail just after Christmas pointing out the error. I'm not the
most patient guy in the world, so when I hadn't received a reply to my e-mail,
I phoned and spoke to a young lady (I have forgotten her name) but she said
that Hazel Sears would be back in touch.

Some time later, I did receive an e-mail reply from Hazel stating that they
would credit my subscription for 2006 and half of 2007. I probably lost an
issue or two in the confusion...but something is better than nothing. Of
course, I haven't seen an issue yet

Dennis
