Re: [meteorite-list] Metal Tektite's?

2006-04-23 Thread Sterling K. Webb

Hi, Kevin,

A tektite is glass. True, a special glass, with
special characteristics, but it is by definition, a glass.
The word tektite means molten. They are glasses
because they were some kind of rock which was
completely melted and then cooled too rapidly to
form crystals again (which is why their origin is
a concealed mystery and a quarrel).
Certainly, tektites contain metals and the chemical
compounds of metals, but if by metal tektite you
mean something similiar to the way an iron meteorite
is a metal meteorite, the answer would be no.

Re: [meteorite-list] Metal Tektite's?

2006-04-23 Thread Pat Brown
Hi Kevin,

Nope, I don't think there are metal tektites.

The tektite origin theory that is most widely accepted
is that Tektites are terrestrial material melted into
a glass by the heat of a large meteorite impact. Since
the material on the surface of earth is mostly
silicate, tektites are essentially glass. There is
very little of the earth's surface that is covered by
any metal in its metallic state. Therefore metal
tektites are very highly unlikely.

Now, that said there are tektites with very small
(smaller than 1/16) balls of metal inside the glass.
This is believed to be caused by vaporization of a
nickel-iron meteorite on impact, followed by cooling
of the meteoritic metal and coalescing the metal into
tiny spheres which get encapsulated in the glass
formed by melting the soil and rock in the impact
area.

I guess several are having video problems...

Re: http://www.meteoritearticles.com/Brenham05.html

I noticed on my system it does not bring up a download box on the
videos...but my explorer bar that shows where I am going shows I am
downloading when I click a video link and a couple minutes later it allows
me to play the video directly from the site. Also I only appear to be
downloading about half (or less) the speed I should be able to...being on
cable.

And of course you will need Quicktime or a like friendly player to view the
videos.

If you have downloaded a video and can play it, drop me an e-mail. They
take up a lot of space on website and I didn't have room for all the videos,
so I might just remove them. Give me a little feedback here please so I can
add a note.

RE: [meteorite-list] RE...Metal Tektite's....

2006-04-23 Thread tracy latimer
Well, if you want to get picky, technically you can get that type of
material from an iron meteorite, although I'm not sure I'd call it a
tektite.  Canyon Diablo is well known for having partly vaporized on impact;
the resultant iron vapor recondensed and seeded the desert for kilometers
around with metallic droplets that cooled into tiny spheres. I don't think
there was any mixture of gas and solid, though. Either the fragment
remained metal all the way down, or it vaporized on impact.

[meteorite-list] Ad: Nevada Meteorite as found IN MATRIX

2006-04-23 Thread Norm Lehrman
List,

Here's a heads up on something kind of neat. A few
days ago I stopped at my favorite central Nevada dry
lake and collected several specimens complete with the
dessicated lake bed surface in which they were
embedded.

I just posted the first one to ebay. See it at:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=6624425370

This makes a really interesting display piece and
comes with exact find coordinates.

If anyone would like a bigger version of this---say a
square foot or so of lake surface complete with a
meteorite, let me know and I'll try to collect one for
you on my next trip out. I'm still experimenting with
approaches to stabilizing the material, but
water-diluted Elmer's glue seems to work well without
any obvious changes in appearance. This could make a
really cool framed wall mount!

Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorite List

2006-04-23 Thread Pete Pete

Hi, Jay,

I have to completely disagree with you.

Often the bantering was at an intellectual level, and some of the most
interesting and thought-provoking perspectives were brought out then.

At other times it seemed, to me, anyway, like the disagreements within a
family - of which every family experiences. Those were sometimes even
entertaining.

Considering the uniqueness of the interest in meteorites and their related
topics, a family is pretty close to what this list is/was.

As long as the first word in an ad was “AD”, those could be easily skipped,
if you are so inclined.
Personally, I enjoy looking at photos of meteorites, and although my budget
is strictly for non-classifieds, I checked out every link to a sale or web
site that was posted. Pitches per week weren’t an issue with me.

All things considered, did you really find it so intolerable?
Don’t you think that the contributions of members from the likes of the
Smithsonian, NASA, other research institutions around the planet, and the
top hunters and collectors more than made up for the bumps?
If it was to be strictly business for every post, what a boring list it
would be!

…just my opinion, of course.

Goddamn group hug!

Cheers,
Pete

If the list is dying it's simply because the vast majority of the posts are
disagreements and advertisements. It has become pretty much worthless as a
source of information...unless the information you desire is who is mad at
who
this week and why prices are what they are ignoring the simple fact that
this

is, to most people on the list, a hobby.

Personally, I go through the messages once a week or so, read the ones of
interest (of which there are few) and perform a mass delete.
