Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorite Doubting Thomas

This may be a silly question, but wouldn't that size of the crater/impact in

 Subject: [meteorite-list] Meteorite Doubting Thomas

I have problems with the meteorite theory:
 1. Meteorites, as this List knows, come in cold, not hot enough to
make the water in the crater boiling, as several witnesses stated.
 2. Meteorites usually travel a long distance from where the glowing
meteor is first seen. If the locals saw the bolide, chances are
good whatever they saw fell a long distance away, not close enough
for them to get there soon after it fell.
 3. Speaking of rocks, by now, everyone in every little hamlet knows
that there are crazy people out there who pay big money for
meteorites. If there was a shower of rocks associated with the
fall, how come none of the other purported meteorites have been
 recovered?
 4. I await the analysis of a real meteorite specialist, not a
geologist, not a vulcanologist, and not media speculation! No
reputable scientist from outside Peru has so far investigated the
crater or seen the alleged meteorite fragments.
 5. The sickness associated with the crater is a likely red herring,
and unrelated to a real meteorite.

 My 2 centavos.
 Tracy Latimer

 Tracy,

 Point one:

Meteorites may be cold, but when the several hundred kilograms (or
more) of mass comes to a complete stop from a speed of hundreds of KM
per hour, most of the kinetic heat of motion is turned into heat.
You do the math, but if hitting a hammer on an anvil can make it hot,
just think of something thousands of times heavier, and thousands of
times more velocity and the result is obvious!

 Point two:

Small meteorites loose their cosmic velocity miles high, and and the
rest of their fall is dark. A very large meteor will retain a
substantial amount of its cosmic velocity until impact. Why should
it not be incandescent up untill the moment of impact?

Re: [meteorite-list] polarizers

Hi Tom.
I just read Your january article about polarizers.
But I dont understand how You can see chondruls through surface ?
Your photos are incredible, but I can't imagine how You do that without
polishing surface to remove polished surface (polished by sand).

When I look into stone through one polarizers nothing happend, when I get
two then nothing happend, only screen become darker when I rotate it. So how
did You do that :)

My polirize filters are nice for most of TS, but maybe there are better ?
Any suggestions ?

Glad you asked!

Hi Marcin and list members, If the whole image is getting darker when the
polarizers are rotated then they are not positioned correctly.

Always remember:

One filter between the light source and the sample.

One filter between the sample and the microscope objective (or your eye if
no microscope is used).

This concept applies to both transmitted (pass through) and incident
(reflected) light.

Only transmitted Xpol produces the vivid colors associated with Xpol
examination.

In answer to Marcin's question. Those rocks were examined as shown in the
first picture with no prep work. The samples were imaged as you see them!
The results are so important in examining an uncut sample, I don't understand
why every one who collects meteorites does not have a cross polarized light
set up.

Marcin's other question about what polarizers to use. On my Neophot I use a
Glan-Thompson style that produces almost total extinction. These polarizers
are expensive and bulky, you don't need those at nearly $500 each (and it's
X2). I don't however, like the films. The ones I have tried distort the
viewing with an irregular film surface. Particularly avoid the adhesive
backed
films as they are the worst for distortion,

I like glass camera filters. What ever style works fine. Circular is my
first pick. These are cheap used almost any where. Even eBay can be a cheap
source. Quality glass camera filters to not disrupt the image and the metal
frame often allows for rotation. About half the filters I pick up rotate in
their holder.

Garage sales and thrift stores are my first hunting grounds and I bought
tons (translate: a lot!) at $1 or less. Yep $1 was my cut off. Except for a
huge 150mm monster I paid $5 for. I haven't found a use for it but I bought
it
because it was cool.

One further note. If you have a rock saw, the class filters cut just fine.
I have cut custom sizes to fit inside microscopes and make for a near OEM
application.

If you are going to my Gallery, please look at the Juvinas Eucrite Xpol thin
 section micrographs.
http://www.meteorite.com/meteorite-gallery/Micro_Visions.htm

Jeff Hodges owns the thin section. It was polished to 1/4 micron on both
sides. This is a big deal as generally thin sections do not have a very high
polish, as it is not necessary to identify minerals and structure. I am
using an aus Jena Aplanatic Pancratic Condenser. This allows me to focus the
incoming light exactly on the thin section and then focus the objective. The
results are stunning.

Please take a look and let me know what you think. You will be amazed.
Don't just say you have seen plenty of Xpol shots before What makes Tom's so
special? LOOK, it will be worth your time.

Thanks, Tom

The surface looks very unusual as a result of recrystallising. Also some

The Meteorite is still under classification, here are the first results I

[meteorite-list] Peru Meteor Curing Diseases

2007-09-23 Thread Darren Garrison
http://www.thespoof.com/news/spoof.cfm?headline=s5i24980

Lima Beanea, Peru (IP) - Scientists studying the Peruvian meteor report that the
meteor is curing the diseases of all who approach it. They now know exactly why
the miracle cures are so effective.

The scientists have observed the figure or image of a hooded female on the side
of space rock. It turns out that the lady of the rock is none other than Maxine
Rashawannawanna who is none other than the Virgin Mary's counter part from the
planet Notperk-Oh-ICU812 which revolves around a pair of stars in the Smaller
Magellanic Cloud.

Locals are converting en masse to Maxine's religion and the local priests are so
upset that they have threatened to make an example of a few people by burning
them at the stake. This has drawn keen interest from a tribe of Firestone
cannibals who inhabit the local jungles.

The result of all of this activity has been the creation of a Woodstock-like
atmosphere as hippies, new agers, priests, news crews, cannibals, vendors,
scientists, medical personnel, hookers, lawyers, onlookers, meteorite
collectors, astronomers, musicians, and countless other folks from diverse
backgrounds pour into the area.

There are folks playing bongos and flutes wherever you turn. In one area
clarinetists and accordion players jam incessantly as if under the control of
some unseen power. The smell of incense mingles with the smell of roasted animal
flesh. Babies cry, women laugh, and men whistle and the mingling of so many
discordant sounds and smells creates a feeling of disorientation and euphoria to
the thousands of folks who are also suffering from sleep deprivation.

There are so many people in the area that already three women have given birth
and 16 people have died only to be brought back to life by the powers emitted by
the space rock.

Wallymart is reportedly sending workers with chisels and hammers to try to
obtain pieces of the meteorite so they can sell it back in the states. The
workers experience some type of mystical or religious conversion as soon as they
get within 100 meters of the rock and not one piece of the rock has been
removed.

As night falls the rock emits light which is of various colors never seen before
on our planet nor in our part of the galaxy. Humming sounds of various
frequencies are heard in the area. Some witnesses have told stories about how
trees and animals that were formerly injured have now become whole again.
Another report circulating among the rock's pilgrims tells of how weapons become
useless within the rock's sphere of influence. The rock's sphere of influence is
also reported to be growing with time and there is no telling where this will
all end.

[meteorite-list] COMPOSITION OF PERUVIAN METEORITE

2007-09-23 Thread Sterling K. Webb
An analysis of fragments of the Peruvian meteorite carried out
by the Universidad Mayor de San Andres, La Paz, Bolivia,
Faculty of Geological Sciences, by Mario Blanco Cazas, a
downloadable .pdf document. It's in Spanish. There are graphs
and charts of elemental abundances, and analysis by Xray
fluoresence. Here's some samples of the text with pitiful
translations:

http://fcpn.umsa.bo/fcpn/app?service=external/PublicationDownloadsp=227

fragments, which reach a maximum size of 0.5 cm, have completely
the aspect of metal. The sample has a very high magnetic susceptibility.

It is not compatible with rocks that normally are on the surface
of the Earth. These relations it might correspond possibly to materials
that would be much more to the interior of the Earth, that is to
say it might be found in materials of Cloak (the Mantle). Therefore,
it is possible to suppose that the analyzed sample, it was containing
minerals of the type ULTRABASIC or BASIC.

[By Xray diffraction, they give:]

MINERALES IDENTIFICADOS:
CUARZO SiO2 (46-1045)*
FOSTERITA FERRICA (Mg,Fe)2 SiO3 (31-795)*
TROILITA - 2H (FeS) (37-477)*
FERROSILITA (Fe,Mg) SiO3 (31-634)*

[Do we even need a translation? Find much troilite in your back yard?]

ELEMENTOS DETECTADOS (ESTIMACIÓN DE CONTENIDOS)
MAYORITARIOS (2%): Fe, Si, Ca, Ni, Mg.
MINORITARIOS (0.1~ 2%): K, Al, Mn, P, Ti, Co.
TRAZAS (0.1%): Ir, Zn, Na.

ELEMENTS DETECTED (ESTIMATION OF CONTENTS)
MAJORITY ( 2 %): Fe, Si, Ca, Ni, Mg.
MINORITY (0.1 ~ 2 %): K, Al, Mn, P, Ti, Co.
TRACES (0.1 %): Ir, Zn, Na.

[Find much Iridium in your back yard?]

La presencia de CUARZO, entre los minerales identificados,
hace pensar que se debe a una CONTAMINACIÓN de la muestra
en el momento del impacto.

The presence of Quartz among the mineral identifications makes
us think it is owing to the terrestrial contamination of the sample at the
moment of impact.

Shows the crater. Shows the crater fuming at one margin.
Shows rooves just covered with many little rocks. Shows
the little flat rocks.

This one has a really painful sound track, lots of
photo manipulation, but one good shot of the little
flat rocks:

Pretty sure the little flat rocks are local stone blasted
out of the crater/pit

[meteorite-list] Need a good clear picture of chondrules

2007-09-23 Thread Ruben Garcia
Hi all,
I'm working on how to identify a stony meteorite
part 2 video.
It will cover chondrules, thumbprints and exterior
rust spots.
Anyway, I need a good, clear, close-up picture of
chondrules. It should be about 1 mega pixel in size.

If someone has one and wouldn't mind allowing me to
use it in my video please let me know.

Thanks,
