[meteorite-list] Got Pics?
Fellow Listoids, Sorry if this post comes thru twice. I sent it yesterday and it failed to show up in the digest. G - My favorite meteorite in my 'never sell' collection is an unclassified NWA I received in late 2005 or early 2006. It is half of an individual with exceptional primary crust and spectacular oriented flowlines. It also features a gigantic chondrule. The fractured face is lightly secondary melted and shows a lot of detail. The primary crust can be seen edge on in the fractured face. It is quite thick. I thought about polishing the fractured face, but have pretty much decided against it as, to my eye, it is spectacular to behold without polishing. I may yet polish it but then again who knows. A... the choices we have to make :) The first pic [links below] is of the primary crusted half with the chondrule and clearly shows the oriented flowlines. The second pic is of the fractured face. Pic #1 is very large so the detail shows up clearly. Pic #2 is of the fractured face and is a bit smaller than pic #1. http://www.webbers.com/meteorites/images/halfloaf5.jpg http://www.webbers.com/meteorites/images/halfloaf-lipping.jpg I look at this specimen closely almost every day and some new detail always pops out to me. [meteorite-list] Bright rays and new craters
Hi Larry, all - Thanks for the quick explanation of the bright rays as being still visible impact glasses. Now if we only knew how long it takes the rays to become obscured. Along with the new images coming in from Cassini, and recovered earlier images, we might end up with some decent models of flux and accretion. I am wondering, do any of the spectrographic instruments have sufficient resolution to even give a hint as to what hit, asteroid or comet? E.P. Gary, Love that chondrule!!! And roll over crust on the back! That is a fine example of why even an unclassified can be a treasure. Do you find it of greater interest because it is still an unknown or would you value it more if it was part of a named find? Tom In a message dated 1/17/2008 9:54:41 A.M. Re: [meteorite-list] Two New Images from MESSENGER's First FlybyofMercury
Hi Again: A little bit more on space weathering (wish I had the time to read up on the latest or at least talk to friends who know more than me on the subject). Over long periods of time, when you remelt the material on a surface, you get very small particles with the iron dispersed within it (nanophase iron). This darkens and reddens the surface (you get rid of the bright rays). Space weathering is caused by solar wind and micrometeorite impacts (very small glassy particles and vapor covering of existing particles). On Mercury, there is a weak magnetic field, so this protects much of the surface from the solar wind. However, because of its location the micrometeorites create about 20 times as much glassy material as on the Moon which would enhance weathering on Mercury over the Moon. Since Mercury is reddish in color, this supports the idea that weathering is occuring on Mercury. However, all of the evidence points to very little iron in the surface material of Mercury relative to the Moon. So, is there enough iron to allow for weathering of the surface? Even with the higher micrometeorite flux, will weathering occur fast on Mercury than on the Moon? I think that are some of the questions that are now being addressed with the latest images of Mercury. Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorite-list Digest, Vol 51, Issue 34
Hi Tom, I dig it for it's unusual characteristics. Unclassified or not it is a thing of beauty and having a name wouldn't enhance that for me. It's unknown nature and subsequent mystery is a great part of its charm. Would I cut it for classification? Never. Would I polish the back face? Not likely as that would destroy the rollover crust. I think it will remain as it is - under glass on my display shelf - for as long as I live. I neglected to place a scale cube with the pics, but to give a rough idea, the 'giant chondrule' is a bit over 1/2cm across. The specimen weighs 64.6g. Gary Gary, Love that chondrule!!! Re: [meteorite-list] Happy Birthday Nininger/Nininger Moment
Hi Arizona Keith and all, Since you mentioned Nininger's Birthday thought I would run this Nininger Moment through the list. All my best to all! --AL Mitterling Mitterling Meteorites Nininger Moment #26 The Bondoc Philippine Meteorite Recovery Story One of the largest and best meteorites might have gone undiscovered in not for Nininger's effort and that of his friend John A. Lednicky. Only 2 other Philippine specimens had been found prior to the Bondoc find. It started when Nininger and Addie were on their 5 month long tour and after the sale of the first part of their collection. Nininger had been seeking tektites from south east Asia and visited the National Bureau of Mines in 1959. There Nininger found a sample sent in as iron ore that was round and badly weathered. The Mass having stony material attached and testing positive for nickel set Nininger's mind into motion. After seeking Permission to hunt the material down he was given the name of Senator Tanada of the Filipino Congress who Nininger visited. The matter had been transferred to the Senator's Son a lawyer who shared the prospect with his friend Mendoza another lawyer who lived closer to the site a remote jungle far down the Bondoc Peninsula. The two young lawyers contacted two Japanese geologists who sought finding an iron mine. The two Japanese geologist went to check out the possible iron deposit but returned discussed and disappointed as it was only something that had fallen out of the sky and they sought an iron mine. Part of the state of mind of the geologists was due to the great effort to reach the site. Several hours journey by slow train. Then waiting hours for a bus that ran on days the roads were passable and dry. A full days journey 40 miles to a small village. Then from the small village by boat down the coast to the mouth of a river. Down the River as far as the boat could go then trampling on foot ten hours through crocodile and snake infested jungle! Nininger attempted to make the trip himself along with his wife Addie with guided help but twisted an ankle before they were very far along. He then turned for help asking his friend John Lednicky who assisted in the hunt. The process of locating, finding a way to extract, floating the specimen to the small village and finally getting it to Nininger was a three and a half year process. Estimated recovery cost was $3750.00. Lednicky hired men who loaded it on to a wooden sled but three caribou were unable to move it. Neither was a small bulldozer. A larger bulldozer was then used to bring the specimen to the mouth of the river. A raft was then constructed of bamboo to tow the specimen on to Manila. The effort to float it to Manila was a nightmare with much risk involved. While transporting the specimen a typhoon hit the area and huge waves rocked the raft and meteorite. Two fishing boats with motors were hired to help stabilized the cargo. One sank in the process and four men nearly drowned. Difficulty in hiring a truck was the next problem after the storm, as roads were washed out and dangerous and risked recovery of the specimen. Finally a truck was hired from a friend of the men who were hired to bring the specimen to Manila. After reaching Manila more red tape and delays plague the shipping of the specimen to Nininger. The specimen weighed Just under one ton (1955 lbs) and was the second largest stony meteorite recovered at that time. Upon reaching Nininger's newly built home in the hills, he placed the meteorite just inside a window where his shop was. Nininger studied the specimen's outside structure before attempting to cut a slab from it. Nininger invited about 60 friends and colleges over before the first slab was taken from it for an opening party. Nininger knew that the specimen was a unique one from the original sample and he was very curious as to the internal structure. At the party Nininger started the saw which ran for 162 hours and cut the first end piece off weighing 120 lbs. Of the distinguished guests Carleton Moore was there and carried the first slice back to the laboratory at Tempe Arizona for the University of Arizona as a gift from Nininger. Nininger stated the real hero as John Lednicky who's relentless effort brought about recovery of the specimen at great personal time and sacrifice. Only expenses and satisfaction of success were his requirements for payment. Nininger later sent him a special meteorite gift as an added thank you. Source: Find A Falling Star By H.H. Some of the items written in the moments might be old out dated material and the reader is advised to keep this in mind. --AL Mitterling Arizona Keith wrote: Hello List Just wanted to say Happy Birthday Harvey Harlow Nininger born on January 17, 1887 We owe him so much! YES. Over the last year the Italian postal service has caused much mayhem and madness for me. I wonder if we have the same buyers making the same claims? Same scams going down or just an extremely corrupt postal service in Italy? I hate to lump the whole Italian Postal Service into a toilet category, but NO other postal service has even come close to being so corrupt. The next worse in my experience is the GERMAN CUSTOMS, who sometimes hold on to packages for months! They don't seem to be corrupt, just after every penny they can get for customs duty. Re: [meteorite-list] I will no longer ship to Italy using paypal
I think the word lately dont belong in farmers email. I always have problems with Italian postal service. Interestingly I have a problem one this morning that is supposedly lost that I mailed 6 weeks ago and have had 3 customers inniating paypal chargebacks from Italy (100% of my total) in the past 3 or 4 months - mostly for stamps. Quite a few people will not ship to Italy. Maybe you could say Fed Ex only. I have been toying with the idea of refusing to send shipments to Italy but I have the occasional customer in Italy and two very good ones who will pay for fed ex shipping. Is there any way on ebay to block bidders from italy but then allow individual bidders on a case by case basis? Maybe I shoudl ask the ebay powerseller people that question.
Hey, I was reading about how corrupt Italy is yesterday on my flight from London, it seems that Naples is buried under thousands of tons of trash for the last few months, every street piled high in stinking garbage, why, the MAFIA controls all garbage collection there, and they want money to make new landfills. How pathetic, one of Europe's great cities filled with trash by corrupt government. Ship to Italy at your own risk, as someone who has sold thousands of items on ebay last year, I know what I am talking about. Re: [meteorite-list] I will no longer ship to Italy using paypal
I agree 100% on this isssue, I agree, Italy is a huge problem. I had to change hundreds of descriptions because of lost packages, mainly to Italy. In my eBay descriptions, I now state that I am no longer responsible for delays or lost items if USPS Global Express is not opted for at at cost $25.00 for those overseas. If you are from Italy, be forewarned, I will no longer take responsibility for delayed or lost packages and will demonstrate to PayPal that I state this in every description if any more claims are made. I have lost thousands of dollars in refunds and claims, almost to the point eBay and PayPal are no longer worth it. Images such as this one can be read in terms of a sequence of geological events and provide insight into the relative timing of processes that have acted on Mercury's surface in the past. The double-ringed crater pictured in the upper right of this image appears to be filled with smooth plains material, perhaps volcanic in nature. This crater was subsequently disrupted by the formation of a prominent scarp (cliff), the surface expression of a major crustal fault system, that runs alongside part of its southern rim and may have led to the uplift seen across a portion of the crater's floor. A smaller crater in the upper left of the image has also been cut by the scarp, showing that the fault beneath the scarp was active after both of these craters had formed. The MESSENGER team is working to combine inferences about the timing of events gained from this image with similar information from the hundreds of other images acquired by MESSENGER to extend and refine the geological history of Mercury previously defined on the basis only of Mariner 10 images. This MESSENGER image was taken from a distance of about 18,000 kilometers (11,000 miles) from the surface of Mercury, at 20:03 UTC, about 58 minutes after the closest approach point of the flyby. The region shown is about 500 kilometers (300 miles) across, and craters as small as 1 kilometer (0.6 mile) can be seen in this image. MESSENGER Views Mercury's Horizon As the MESSENGER spacecraft drew closer to Mercury for its historic first flyby, the spacecraft's Narrow Angle Camera (NAC) on the Mercury Dual Imaging System (MDIS) acquired an image mosaic of the sunlit portion of the planet. This image http://messenger.jhuapl.edu/gallery/sciencePhotos/image.php?gallery_id=2image_id=122 is one of those mosaic frames and was acquired on January 14, 2008, 18:10 UTC, when the spacecraft was about 18,000 kilometers (11,000 miles) from the surface of Mercury, about 55 minutes before MESSENGER's closest approach to the planet. The image shows a variety of surface textures, including smooth plains at the center of the image, many impact craters (some with central peaks), and rough material that appears to have been ejected from the large crater to the lower right. This large 200-kilometer-wide (about 120 miles) crater was seen in less detail by Mariner 10 more than three decades ago and was named Sholem Aleichem for the Yiddish writer. In this MESSENGER image, it can be seen that the plains deposits filling the crater's interior have been deformed by linear ridges. The shadowed area on the right of the image is the day-night boundary, known as the terminator. Altogether, MESSENGER acquired over 1200 images of Mercury, which the science team members are now examining in detail to learn about the history and evolution of the innermost planet. Additional information and features from MESSENGER's first flyby of Mercury will be available online at http://messenger.jhuapl.edu/mer_flyby1.html. Following the flyby, be sure to check for the latest released images and science results! MESSENGER (MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry, and Ranging) is a NASA-sponsored scientific investigation of the planet Mercury and the first space mission designed to orbit the planet closest to the Sun. The MESSENGER spacecraft launched on August 3, 2004, and after flybys of Earth, Venus, and Mercury will start a yearlong study of its target planet in March 2011. Dr. Sean C. Solomon, of the Carnegie Institution of Washington, leads the mission as principal investigator. The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory built and operates the MESSENGER spacecraft and manages this Discovery -class mission for NASA. __ http://www.meteoritecentral.com Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

Re: [meteorite-list] I will no longer ship to Italy using paypal
Adam, if they pay via paypal, it does not matter what you say or demand, if they py with paypal, and you do not use FEDEX or DHL, or UPS, then they will refund the money to the buyer. What you say in your auction means nothing. I have went round and round with Paypal over this, it does not matter, if you, the shipper does not provide a tracking number (registered mail does not count) then they automatically refund the payment. I am telling you from over $2000 lost money now. NO MORE ITALY with paypal. FINITO Michael Farmer --- Adam Hupe [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I agree 100% on this isssue, I agree, Italy is a huge problem. If you are from Italy, be forewarned, I will no longer take responsibility for delayed or lost packages and will demonstrate to PayPal that I state this in every description if any more claims are made. Re: [meteorite-list] Auction Update (AD Info)
Hi all List members, If you go to http://michaelbloodmeteorites.com/TucsonAuction08.html You will see I now have all the entries up to date. However, That is only 48 lots and the auction will be over quite quickly If no one else enters items soon. To that end - I am offering a 5 day, original 10% commission To any entries of value with no minimum. If you get your goodies Listed and jpgs to me by Sunday, you will get the same 10% rate As those that got in early. After that, the increases stand. I know I can rustle up some entries at the Show that will be quite worth While. Also, Moni Waiblinger had something come up that will prevent Her from attending, but Floyd Griffith has stepped up to do checkout During the auction, so, if anyone wants to bid on a specific item, then Leave, they can do so. Griff will also be helping me check out people After the auction, so that will go twice as fast as in the past. I still need 2 more volunteers to help out to make things go Smoothly. I pay a paltry $100. So, I know it is volunteer work, but at Least you get a little to buy with - and helpers are entirely welcome To bid. All the remaining positions are easy as pie, but I do need people I can count on. Please contact me off list for a position or to enter pieces for the auction. [meteorite-list] BBC Sky at night prog features meteorites( credits Mike Farmer) + Haag prog.
Hi again, First of all...thanks to all those that replied to my post Dirk, Ian, Peter, Jason, etc. about the possible impact crater formation I photographed whilst flying over N China/Mongolia. http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o43/LaburnumStudio/Craters/Crater-.jpg I am still not convinced that I have identified it. Some of you helped by plotting the flight path from London to HongKong to narrow down the search...but the most likely known craterTabun Khara Obo crater..seems to be too far east of the flight path...although it looks about right. Next.. Interesting series on UKTV Documentary at the moment...Earthshock...last nights was about earth impacts and featured Bob Haag for a while hunting and in his strongroom. I seem to be having a great meteorite month. (Pity I cant cap it with a Tucson Visit :-( ) This months BBC Sky at Night is on cosmic debris? I just caught up with it online (after my trek around the Ozzy meteorite museums and craters) at... http://www.bbc.co.uk/science/space/spaceguide/skyatnight/proginfo.shtml worth a look...you can watch it online for a while. Mike is credited for his Carancas pictures which feature prominently. It just so happens it features Dr Richard Greenwood whom Prof Colin Pillinger referred me to when we met at a recent Flamsteed lecture. http://www.open.ac.uk/science/pssri/about-the-department/news/news.php?article_id=12768 Some nice info on their site about involvement in the Stardust, Rosetta and other missions too. Quite a coincidence as Richard is showing me around their facilities and collection tomorrow. He has just helped with the classification of Carancas...quote In terms of meteorite samples we have pretty much finished our work on Carancas. The Peruvian mineralogical survey were able to supply a sample for oxygen isotope analysis and we were able to confirm its classification as H4/5 ( Met. Bull http://tin.er.usgs.gov/meteor/index.php So looking forward to heading down to the OU with some unclassified samples in the morning. Graham Ensor, Nr Barwell, UK Very best wishes Richard So tomorrow I am off with some of my space rocks to look around the meteorite collection and classification facilities at the OU Planetary and Space Sciences Research Institute in Milton Keynes.should be fun! Re: [meteorite-list] Asteroid Impacts May Have Triggered PlateTectonics(OT)
Hi Elton, thanks for the input. I regret that I may have been too parochial in my presentation. I merely used what I know about the geology of my locale, New England [which, as you aptly pointed out, needs considerable refinement] to present a fanciful possibility that meteorite chains impacting with enough force in strategic areas [hot spots, etc.] punching through the crust, might initiate separation of continental masses, creating new plate boundaries. Thanks for the links. Unfortunately for me, they are familiar. Too much for me to retain and integrate but I keep trying. I figure in another 20 years or so, if I keep recognizing them I may be a step closer to understanding. P.S. It is not impossible for rift valleys to exist at the foot of mountain ranges. While much of what you relate is sequentially correct it co-mingles 700+ million years of geological history into a related event. The Connecticut River Valley is a rift valley and not a collision boundary--Otherwise it wouldn't be a Valley but the Connecticut River Mountains Perhaps you would like to Muse this: Avalonia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avalonia And this link for the origins of the CRV Lava flows http://vulcan.wr.usgs.gov/LivingWith/VolcanicPast/Places/volcanic_past_massachusetts.html The lava flow, now seen as prominent ridgelines overlooking the valley lowlands, formed as basalt oozed out of faults associated with the Eastern Border Fault ... the Connecticut Valley sequence is determined to be early Mesozoic -- from late Triassic through early Jurassic Periods. Between 190 and 194 my North America and Baltica rifted and basalt erupted from where Patterson NJ lies now, through The Pallasides on the Hudson up through the Conneticut River Valley on through the Berkshires. This rift zone accumulated several hundred feet of basalt. Here is what is said by the USGS CVO page: Elton --- Jerry [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: ...My musing only takes into account the fact that the Connecticut River Valley, 100 miles from the coast, is thought to be the result a collision of ancient plate boundaries. The fact the the much later break-up occurred not there, at the Berkshire Mountains margin, but 100+ miles from the CRV, just made me wonder if another mechanism might be at work. Granted, the coastal region, at least where glacial debris has not cover it up, is host to a string of ancient extinct volcanoes 30 miles south of Boston through the Canadian Provinces across the Atlantic through the Celtic isles into Scandinavia. And the brittle nature of these lavas may be provide sufficient explanation for the modern continental configuration given appropriate stresses applied through the mechanism of tectonics. But musing doesn't cost much and cataclysm of the mind doesn't hurt. [meteorite-list] Meteor Shower Origin Traced To 1490 Event
http://space.newscientist.com/article/dn13152-meteors-mysterious-origin-traced-to-1490-event.html Meteors' mysterious origin traced to 1490 event Stephen Battersby New Scientist 07 January 2008 Last week's Quadrantid meteor shower was probably debris from a deep-space explosion that went off in the late 15th century, new observations reveal. The meteors, which return every January, were observed more closely than ever before when a group of 14 astronomers tracked them for nine hours on a flight from California, US, to the North Pole. They found that the shower peaked at around 0200 GMT on Friday, matching a prediction made by Peter Jenniskens of NASA. He based his prediction on the theory that the shower originated in 1490, when observers in China, Japan and Korea saw a comet following a path similar to that of the Quadrantids. Apparently a sudden event caused the dormant comet to flare up - like Comet Holmes in October 2007 - leaving behind a stream of debris. Jenniskens calculated that such a young stream should be narrow, and thus easily deflected by Jupiter's gravity. That would make it arrive a few hours earlier than if it were an older, more diffuse stream. Friday's observations confirm the story. A closer analysis of the new data might also give astronomers some clues about what caused the outburst. The 1490 event left behind at least one larger remnant, a near-Earth asteroid called 2003 EH1. __ http://www.meteoritecentral.com Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

Ok, I was just hunting meteorites on the other side of the world, and we found 107 in the last three weeks. I found a large Eucrite, TWO new Lunar meteorites, and Robert Ward found a very nice Ureilite. A few other goodies lurk in the batch no doubt, but unfortunately, my baggage (and most of the meteorites) is still missing. We plan to display some of the meteorites at the Tucson show, and the newest Lunar meteorites on the planet will be on display, intact. How do I know they are Lunar meteorites you might ask, well, come to Tucson and see for yourselves, I think they will make a big splash, especially since they were in the sand 10 days ago. I found them both, 2 and a half hours apart on January 7th, 2008. The tents are up in Tucson, and people will begin arriving at my house next week already! It is that magical time of the year. We plan to have a special display case dedicated to these new finds, and last year's amazing meteorite haul, from Cali, to Carancas, to Puerto Lapice Spain, all will be on display with photos. __ http://www.meteoritecentral.com Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

As everyone knows, Michael does a great job and his auction is one of the top meteorite events of the year. Any first-timers to Tucson this year should attend. And I do believe I finally have something fabulous to consign with Michael for the '08 auction. As Mike Farmer noted, the big tents are already being hoisted at the Electric Park. The Tucson contingent will be looking forward to welcoming many of you here over the next two to three weeks, and I shall have a couple of very special announcements before then. Stay tuned. Re: [meteorite-list] Does this sound like possible bolide breaking up?
Doesn't SOUND like a bolide. It sounds like NOTHING as in NO SOUND was reported ergo, it fails to meet the criteria for bolide. The report of lights turning into flames is very weak evidence of a meteor entry. These UFO reports rarely talk about sounds such as sonic booms even thought they claim to be going at mach5! the problem here in Italy its the Custom, Why in some case I have say not put the value declared? Why they stop the pack for control for many months, at 2 months.
