Hi all -

Given the fall of the US dollar against the Euro, it
would seem to me that US meteorites, as well as
meteorites imported earlier into the US, might now be
relatively cheap for individuals with non-dollar
funds.

Re: [meteorite-list] Tektites and Fused Glass in Israel ???

2008-04-08 Thread Mark Ford

Hi Paul,

Lots of hokum pokem around about this subject, but I do remember (a
serious) documentary some time back on UK television ('Horizon' I
think), they [horizon] where basically referring to sulphur type
spherules (the mythical Brimstone) deposits that where found around the
area. I believe by triangulation of deposits they where arguing a case
for the remains of Sodom and G. being out in the middle of the sea.

.. Lots of ancient volcanic activity in that area, so could be lots of
things I guess, (though the recent alleged reports of elevated iridium
are a little 'trickier' to explain away... )

Best,
Mark Ford

Subject: [meteorite-list] Tektites and Fused Glass in Israel ???

In sci.archaeology USENET discussion, The following
statement was made:

There is an area in Israel where Sodom and Gomorrah
are believed by most historians to have once been.
The plain is littered with spherules of fused glass,
which only forms when very high heat is combined with
great pressure. ...

This claim was allegedly made on a PBS show in the
mid-1990s according to a post in the thread Re: Nobel
Laureates v Creationists, Message-ID:
[EMAIL PROTECTED],
by Scotius at:

http://groups.google.com/group/alt.politics/browse_thread/thread/13ce10f
b77d1fc61/54edd76022891b71?lnk=stq=%22fused+glass%22+%22Sodom+and+Gomor
rah%22#54edd76022891b71

Does anyone on this list either know what PBS special
is being referred to by this comment or primary
literature that documents the occurrence of spherules
of fused glass, which only forms when very high heat
is combined with great pressure within any part of
Israel? Is this claim about spherules of fused glass
having been found in Israel being mentioned in a
mid-1990s PBS Special a figment of Scotius
imagination?

While trying finding out about the occurrence of fused
glass in Israel, my web search found reference to
tektites having been found in articles by written
pseudoscientific alternative archaeologists including:

1. THE ATLANTEANS Tutors or Tyrants?
http://www.burlingtonnews.net/atlanteans.html

2. ATLANTIS 2012 AND THE AGE OF REVEALING
The High Window Articles by Michael Tsarion.
http://taroscopes.com/highwindowsarticles/2012.age.reckoning.html

Both of the above web pages stated:

Why are radioactive tektites and isotopes found all over
the Dead Sea basin and at the very location posited for the
ancient cities of Sodom and Gomorrah?

and 3. Atlantis, Alien Visitation, and Genetic Manipulation - 06'
http://www.bibliotecapleyades.net/atlantida_mu/atlantis_alienvisitation/
atlantis_alienvisitation06.htm

How does the detractor explain the presence of
radioactive tektites and isotopes at the very
sites now known to be the Biblical Sodom and
Gomorrah and Jericho?

None of these web pages provide any source for tektites
being found in Israel.

Has any credible source reported anything about tektites
being found in Israel? Or is this usual claptrap that alternative
archaeologists post to the Internet?

Best Regards,

Paul H.

[meteorite-list] New Martian NWA 4925

2008-04-08 Thread bernd . pauli
Hello List,

When I came home from school today, I was pleased to see my 0.894-gram
basaltic shergottite NWA 4925 from Chladni's Heirs had arrived. What a
gorgeous, crystalline beauty from our orange neighbor. Have you ever
heard about those weird, orange inclusions in the ALH 84001 pyroxenite?
NWA has a similar feature: large, orange blebs that are up to 1.5 millimeter
in diameter set in a conspicuous crystalline matrix of pyroxene and maskelynite.

If you should think it is similar to DaG 476, you are wrong. The latter is much
finer-grained, less crystalline and more like a gun-metal gray, terrestrial
basalt.

NWA 4925 is beautiful beyond compare!!!

http://www.chladnis-heirs.com/special-nwa4925.html

Cheers,

Bernd

Re: [meteorite-list] Effect of fall of dollar against Euro/ dirham's

2008-04-08 Thread Jeff Kuyken
While US customers might be slowing down, other countries may have been
increasing. Many of the other currencies are up considerably like the
Canadian, Australian, New Zealand, Euro, etc.

Markets and circumstances change... they always have... they always will.

For example, 6-7 years ago Unclassified NWA's sold for say $3/g+ on eBay. At
that time the Australian Dollar was worth about US$0.49. Today it's worth
$0.93 and holding strong. And those same quality meteorites can sell for
US$0.10/g now. That's means today, a 9g meteorite costs me ~AUS$1 whereas 6
years ago it may have cost me AUS$50+.

Clearly, that's a very simplified view of it but I guess what I'm trying to
say (in this late hour;-)) is that the market is what it is and people will
pay what they feel comfortable to pay. That is the basic truth of it.

Cheers,

Jeff

But they're already buying more than ever, the Europeans.

Ask some other American dealers.
Of course their purchases disperse on US- and European dealers likewise,
because the European dealers can't ask more for their meteorites than their
US-colleagues. So I think also most of the European offerers can report an
increase of sales during the last years.

[meteorite-list] Secondary craters on Mars and Carancas

2008-04-08 Thread E.P. Grondine
Hi all -

Speaking of the small crater at Carancas, a prominent
theory put forward to explain the number of craters on
Mars is secondary craters formed by the impact of
large ejecta from primary impacts, i.e.:

http://hirise.lpl.arizona.edu/PSP_007059_1975

Given the energy required to form an impact crater of
any size, I am very suspicious of this hypothesis. I
can't see how any large ejecta from a primary impact
could reach sufficient velocity to have the energy
necessary to form these secondary craters, and I
think that some may be engaging in wishful thinking in
this regard.

Given what we know of asteroids and comets, smaller
chunks of a primary impactor impacting at the same
time might be a more viable hypothesis.

Any thoughts, anyone?

good hunting all,

2008-04-08 Thread david freeman
Dear List;
I agree with Michael. It is a number of issues, one
being U.S. debt and taxing makes money tight as does
war. Another as Michael puts it is the cost of bread,
milk, and eggs, and gasoline which the common folks
need, and compete with the meteorite collector in for
pricing. Meteorite collector: can I afford an extra
$50 a week in energy, food, and other costs and
continue to spend my normal amount on my collecting
hobby? We Americans collect more than just meteorites.
We also collect food and energy and historically at a
disportinate rate to other civilized nations. Our food
and energy costs are very high now, and intertwined
deeply with each other. As other economies rise, the
U.S. economy is equalizing, meaning we are in
finincial decline. Less money is expendable to collect
stamps, second and third cars, METEORITES, bread,
milk,and eggs.
This decline in business is not just in the meteorite
sector.
I think big oil is probably a good business to invest
in at the moment, but with an election coming soon,
maybe not so either.
Thanks Michael for the comment.

Workshop on Antarctic Meteorites

The workshop on Antarctic Meteorites: Search, Recovery, and
Classification will be held July 26 - 27, 2008, at the Kunibiki Messe
http://www.kunibikimesse.jp/en/index.html in Matsue City
http://www.city.matsue.shimane.jp/kankou/en/, Japan. The workshop
precedes the 71st Annual Meeting of the Meteoritical Society
http://www.metsoc2008.jp held at the same venue.

Purpose and Scope

Many groups are recovering large numbers of meteorites from Antarctica.
The purpose of the workshop is to gather meteoriticists to discuss
issues relating to these collections, and how to allow these new
discoveries to have the largest impact on our field. The workshop format
will allow discussion of topics not usually covered during the regular
sessions of the Meteoritical Society meeting. Specifically, the topics
of interest will include the search, recovery, classification,
weathering and curation of Antarctic Meteorites.

Travel Grants

Thanks to generous contributions from the National Institute of Polar
Research, Japan http://www.nipr.ac.jp/english/, and the Graduate
School for Advanced Studies (SOKENDAI), Japan
http://www.soken.ac.jp/en/, a limited number of student travel grants
will be available to qualified students and recent Ph.D.s, who are
members of the Meteoritical Society. Applicants must be the sole or
first author of an abstract to be presented at the workshop and also
submit application materials antmet2008.studentapp.pdf to the Lunar
and Planetary Institute by the abstract deadline

Schedule

May 14, 2008 Deadline for abstract submission

2008-04-08 Thread Rob Matson
At least at the present time, the U.S. drives the meteorite
market, which is why sales are slow. From a collecting
standpoint, meteorites are and have always been a luxury
item. Despite their rarity and scientific value, they do
not have the liquidity of other commodities, so they cannot
be used as a reliable hedge against inflation. (Wouldn't
it be interesting if there was a futures market for
meteorites? That would add some price stability.)

If I was a dealer that depended on sales for my livelihood,
I might consider making advertising inroads into emerging
markets -- specifically China. Effective marketing there
is likely to be quite different from that which works for
Western consumers.

Dave and Michael both mentioned the rise in the U.S. national
debt which certainly has a negative effect on the purchasing
power of the dollar. (As a humorous aside, I'm reminded of
Saturday Night Live's Dennis Miller once asking, Who do we
owe this debt to? I say, 'let's just not pay it.' What are
they going to do? As for oil/gasoline, the real price is
no higher than it was in the 1970s. Frankly, I don't quite
understand how gasoline isn't over $6/gallon when you consider
the comparative cost of a barrel of oil today (over $100) vs.
say five years ago (less than $30).

Dave wrote: I think big oil is probably a good business to
invest in at the moment..., to which I would say it's probably
better than meteorites! But the truth is, anyone who owns
mutual funds is already invested in oil. That's not to say you
wouldn't want to press your position (I have been). As for the
outcome of the fall elections having an impact on oil prices,
I'd say it will be minimal. Oil is a global commodity whose
price is fixed largely by demand, not U.S. politics.

Re: [meteorite-list] Effect of fall of dollar against Euro/ dirham's

2008-04-08 Thread mexicodoug
On the comments on why the Europeans have not picked up too much slack
that resulted from the erosion of US buying power:

Dear Listees,

Just a stab, but the European (Franco-Germanic) buying culture seems
much less speculative (more conservative) than the corresponding
American (Las Vegas) buying culture. When the pressure is put on the
speculators in any market, sales tend to get sluggish as no one wants
to take paper losses and the market simply looses its momentum.

The situation I see is that a few grams (or disturbingly, milligrams)
weekly are used as price benchmarks for tons of material, and in plenty
of cases in sales to buyers who are not market-savvy. The nice man
(or lady) that sells you the piece claims that it is worth millions -
just trust them and appeals to our love of space and astronomy (how
could we possibly say no?!). How is that for investment advice?

In such overall economic slowdowns, situations price normally
re-adjusts lower and the demand picks up, people grumble a bit, some
get caught with their pants down, some new ones appear who are better
suited, and everyone remaining gets back to figuring how to make money.
But since meteorites are so far from being a perfect market,
macroeconomics becomes a square peg in a round market.

So hopefully, everyone just relaxes and acquires whatever makes them
happy with offers they consider fair, and to relieve some pressures,
speculators avoid counting all their chickens before they hatch.

That's my stab at it. As meteorites are not an investment approved by
the Securities and Exchange commission, no 10-K or proxy statement is
in the works and it's still each man (and woman) for themself...

One thing is a safe bet: If you truly love meteorites, everything is
just fine. These are great times to be alive...

Best wishes and Great Health
Doug

Interesting?

That's outrageous.

Reminds me of the joke about the used car salesman who priced all the cars
on the lot at $1,000,000 each. When asked why, he replied, all I need to
sell is one.

Fortunately, Ed Thompson is selling me a copy at a more reasonable price.
Thank you, Ed (and Doug).

Wow, another meteorite book with skyrocketing prices.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/0521258723/

When I bought my copy, used ones cost around 5 bucks. I figured that the price
would be similar or lower now, but nope.

Crazy, the range of asking prices for books. I usually go for used hardbacks (I
especially like ex-public library books because I like the mylar sleeves over
the dust jackets). With any given book with a fair press run, prices may range
from people expecting less than a dollar to more than 100 dollars for the same
edition. Of course, condition matters, but not 100x, and with grading being
subjective to the seller, they are all pretty much equal sight-unseen anyway.

Here's a book I bought when it was first published, had my copy water-damaged,
looked for a replacement, and saw that used prices were double the price I paid
for it new. So I wait. A few weeks back, copies show up from a couple of
sellers for under 6 bucks a copy. I snatch one up. Brand new copy. I looked
just now out of curiosity. Back up to 2x the original new price.

[meteorite-list] How Do You Know It's A Meteorite?----Round Two

2008-04-08 Thread Thomas Webb
List Members,
Thanks to those who responded to my question. I've
been answering the question for 48 years and to
numerous individuals from around the world and was
interested in hearing how you are responding to those
who ask you. How we respond to this from a person who
knows nothing about meteorites may just make the
difference in turning them on, or off to meteorites,
as well as convincing them that we know what we're
talking about.
I would still like to hear from those who didn't
respond. (Original below.)
Thank you very much!

Dear List Member,

2008-04-08 Thread Michael Murray
I liked Mark Ford's response to this question, but even an educated
response like that most likely wouldn't have swayed the guy who asked
me that question last. To my suggesting the suspect rock I was
showing him might be a meteorite and telling him the probable age of
it, his reply was real close to, Oh that is BS. The earth is only
5,000 years old you know.: )
Needless to say, we don't discuss the topic nowadays. He wins, hands
down. His reply caught me so far off guard that I couldn't even
think of something to say in response back to it. After about 3 or 4
minutes I realized my mouth was still hanging open.

[meteorite-list] European/US market comparison

2008-04-08 Thread E.P. Grondine
Hi all -

From what I can make of it from your comments, the
European collectors seem to buy high end specimens,
and Europe does not have the broad general market seen
here in the U.S.

Perhaps this may be ascribed to Barringer Crater and
Nininger's work there, supplemented with Bob Haag's
and other's more recent efforts.

What might lead to a broader European market? My guess
would be museum sales of inexpensive slices, and the
development of the existing craters in Europe as
tourist stops (Kali Jar in Estonia?).

good hunting all,
with hopes for more peaceful and prosperous times
ahead,
