Re: [meteorite-list] The Temperature/smell of meteorites: Reports fromChinese annals
Robert, very interesting indeed, thanks for sharing your knowledge of the quoted publication dedicated to historical Chinese sources in regard to watched meteorite falls. Does the publication cover only the circumstances of the falls or can one find also information concerning cultural aspects? In any case I'd be interested in an English version (you suggest that a translatrion is planned, if I understand you right?). Best, Matthias - Original Message - From: Robert A. Juhl bartr...@mac.com To: meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com Sent: Saturday, November 27, 2010 12:53 AM Subject: [meteorite-list] The Temperature/smell of meteorites: Reports fromChinese annals Hello List, I'm new on the Meteorite-List and saw the posts about the temperature of meteorites followed by posts about some meteorites with a sulfurous smell. Perhaps I can contribute to this discussion. Sorry to be late, but to date I haven't been able to tweak my gmail to succeed in posting to the list. Finally, I came across a obscure mailer that seems to work. So with fingers crossed, here goes. There are a number of reports of meteorites with smells of various kinds in ancient Chinese records. Following are a few reports dredged up from a quick trawl through China's standard list of official meteorite records. Before getting to the records, I want to point out that I know nothing about meteorites -- that's why I'm on the list -- to learn. But I do know something about ancient Chinese records. My source for these reports is the standard, comprehensive list of Chinese meteor falls (pgs 63-104 of Zhongguo gudai tianxiang jilu zongji = Complete collection of records of celestial phenomena in ancient China, published in Nanjing in 1988 under the auspices of the Chinese Academy of Sciences). The book covers reports from ancient times to 1910. In other words, they are reports of recognized meteorite falls. Translations are drafts. A report dated 30 Mar 1189 says: A meteorite fell in Baoying County in Chuzhou. It disintegrated into fires [perhaps with many sparks/fires on impact?] and had an extremely rancid odor. A report dated 28 Jun 1499 says: There was a sound like thunder...to the N of Shuozhou city. A white vapor stretched across the sky. A fireball split apart, dropping a stone as big as a small cartwheel. It entered the ground more than seven feet deep, followed by gravel-like stones up to 20-30 li distant (10-15 kilometers). The stone was bluish-black, had an odor like sulfur, and its substance was hard and smooth. (From two local histories of Shanxi) A report dated 16 Nov 1620 says: A thunderous sound and the earth shook. A black cloud surrounded a stone that fell at the mouth of a spring. The stone was colored like green mung beans and had a sulfurous odor. (From a local history of Hubei) A report about the same stone from a separate history says the stone smelled like gunpowder. A report dated 1622 says: A thunderous sound and a stone fell. Neither stone nor iron, its shape was wrinkled and it had a sulfurous odor. It weighed five yi (perhaps 100-200 ounces; this unit of weight is not well-defined). (From a local history of Hubei) A report dated 31 July 1815 says: Two streaks of white 'vapor' appeared between the fields, reaching into the sky. After a while, they dispersed and a meteor burst apart with a [loud] sound in the sky, which stopped after a short time. Meteorites then fell to earth, where they changed [meteorites were thought to consist of 'vapor' during flight, changing to iron, stone, or other materials after landing] into marble-sized pellets. Neither iron nor stone, they had a sulfurous smell. A report dated 15 May 1832 says: Three meteorites fell around 3 pmBefore the meteorite had fallen, there was a sound like thunder and a shaking [of the earth]. When the people looked up, they saw things colored deep black descending from the sky. They were as big as a hu measures. Whirling around, they entered the fields. The people quickly dug for them. After digging about 2.5 ft deep, they retrieved a stone colored like a sheep's liver and covered all over with protrusions. It weighed several jin (probably more than a kilogram) and smelled rancid. A report dated 4 May-2 Jun 1856 says: ...there was a sound like thunder from the sky and something as big as a cartwheel descended, colored like the yellow of a hen's egg. It smelled so rancid that people couldn't approach it. There are many more, but you get the idea. There are also some interesting clusters. For example, there is a cluster of four meteorites that smelled like sulfur in the 1717-1725 timeframe. There are also reports of warm/hot/frosty meteorites in Chinese sources. Here are a few excerpts. Date: 1720.1.10. After twilight a sound like a cannonade came from the east and then from the south. Flashing and flickering, an object fell from the sky. It was as big as a goose egg, metallic, very hot, and had a sulfurous odor. (From a local history
[meteorite-list] More info about my source
Hello Matthias, List, Here is some more information about Zhongguo gudai tianxiang jilu zongji (= Complete collection of records of celestial phenomena in ancient China). The book has 11 sections, including sunspots, auroras, meteor falls, eclipses, novas and supernovas, comets, meteor showers, meteor sightings, and so on. Many sections also have lists of uncertain objects. Running well over 1,000 pages, it includes all official and semi-official reports of celestial phenomena from ancient times to around 1910, as well as well-sourced anecdotal reports. To put together the sampling I posted, all I did was turn to the section on meteor falls, pick out reports that included a mention of temperature or odor, and translate them. By the way, although the book claims to be comprehensive, many celestial phenomena are not included, such as reports of vapors that were something other than auroras. Hope this helps. Dogs are amazing. I had a Rottweiler that took to rocks naturally. A long time ago, I received a package of Saharan meteorites from the Labennes, laid one out on a table and my dog made off with it and buried in the back yard. I gave him another one, he took it and tried to bury it as well. This is how we found where he buried the first one. I could pick up any rock, observe its unique characteristics and throw it into the river. My dog would then go after it and not return until he had found the exact same rock I had thrown among thousands of others. I do not know how he was able to do this since it seems unlikely that a dog could smell anything submerged in water. It was like magic watching him retrieve these rocks. I have no explanation for this. A trained dog seems like a natural tool to use in meteorite hunting. I am curious to how this works out. Who knows? Hi Adam and list, You know your right Dogs are amazing. My cousin on his farm in ohio has a Golden Retriver with a heck of a nose. While hunting the past 2 weeks there I would play fetch with a stick, even when he lost sight of the direction, He would put his nose to the ground and circle the area until he found it. This dog diggs up around 6-8 moles a year that are 6 -10 in deep in the ground. So I was thinking last week, could I train this dog to find meteorites? I think I will Take out 2 unwa next trip, wash them, put on gloves and play fetch. Then heat one rock up in the oven, (that will give off a very strong rock smell) then bury the rock about 10 in. deep, in the ground, walk him around and see if he finds it. If that works in a day of testing, Then I will try cold rocks! It will be fun. dave - Original Message From: Adam Hupe raremeteori...@yahoo.com To: Adam meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com Sent: Sat, November 27, 2010 6:31:31 PM Subject: Re: [meteorite-list] Brix's meteorite hunting training video Part 2 Dogs are amazing. Hi Ruben/List. Fairly nice Campo there, but it sure isn't a Canyon Diablo! g New seller here and he may not know the difference. It may be that the corporate office he says it's been displayed in for a couple of years now got swindled when they bought it as such. I wonder if he'll cite the provenance when he responds to my inquiry? Linton Your meteorite sure looks like a Campo del Cielo. What makes you think it's a Canyon Diablo? I'm very familiar with both irons. Large Campos are NOT unusual at all. Besides the fact that CDs that large are MUCH more rare. The LARGE regmaglypts is the big tell. Canyon Diablos don't typically have large smoother thumbprints like Campos do which is caused by ablation. CDs are more shrapnel like, with sharp edges, ridges, and points. Typical of an impact iron. Campo del Ceilo meteorites are different in that MOST pieces are highly thumbprinted/ablated, evidencing their high altitude breakup and ablation which smoothes the outer surface. Not an from explosive impact/explosive event which rips the iron to pieces like the Canyon Diablos. They show nice colors and sometimes special structures well used for petrogaphic studies. But there is an other possibility to study the micro structure of minerals, - the use of a reflecting light microscope with polarising and color selecting filters. This images are ever very colorful too and this colors are mostly real. Reflecting microscope studies allow you to detect on a certain slice thousands of regions, - day for day new structures and if you have seen enough you must turn your probe only an a certain angle and the microworld you see is every time a new one. Re: [meteorite-list] Double your meteorite sales!
Besides the fact that CDs that large are MUCH more rare. Saying that something is rare doesn't mean it won't turn up on ebay. Our 36 kilogram Canyon Diablo was listed as a Campo a number of years ago by someone brokering an old collection. http://picasaweb.google.com/MeteoriteKid/Irons#5417262621708828690 Those two large holes still have remnants of the large graphite inclusions that weathered out to form them. Typical of Canyon Diablo. John and Dawn Birdsell purchased another Campo from the same seller that turned out to be Canyon Diablo - they cut it up and sold it as such. The LARGE regmaglypts is the big tell. Canyon Diablos don't typically have large smoother thumbprints like Campos do which is caused by ablation. Canyon Diablos usually have larger regmaglypts than Campos. I know what you're trying to say -- that the Campos tend to have smoother contours -- but as Buchwald would tell you in volume one of his set, Canyon Diablos have undergone a greater degree of weathering, resulting in the formation of sharp ridges where smoother, ablative ridges have weathered away, and regmaglypts have been deepened and widened (see picture above). CDs are more shrapnel like, with sharp edges, ridges, and points. Typical of an impact iron. Most Canyon Diablos were affected little, if at all by the impact. If you can find a picture of the etched surface of a Canyon Diablo that shows actual physical deformation (compare to Henbury here: http://www.pallasite.ca/meteorites/meteoriteDetails.cfm?function=largemeteoriteNo=302specimenNo=331 ), I'll pay you good money for it. I've been collecting meteorites for over ten years, and the closest I've seen is heat-distortion - not mechanical bending or stretching as one would see in a simple explosive impact like Sikhote-Alin, Gebel-Kamil, etc. The reason for this is that the Canyon Diablo impact didn't produce much, if any, actual shrapnel. The energy released was enough to vaporize the primary impactor, and the pieces recovered all (yes, likely *all*) spalled off prior to impact. Nininger related the finding of metallic/oxide slugs with incorporated limestone inclusions that he found on the rim of the crater - these are likely the closest things that Canyon Diablo produced to shrapnel. So, to condense - Canyon Diablo probably didn't produce shrapnel. Sharp edges as seen on Canyon Diablos are typical of weathering. Hence most Canyon Diablos, while they have sharp edges, aren't shaped like shrapnel (compare to Chinga, Sikhote-Alin, Henbury). Here's a photo of a shocked Canyon Diablo. I see minor recrystallization due to heat-alteration, leading to a washed-out pattern. I see no mechanical alteration due to shear/crater-forming type effects. http://cgi.ebay.com/Canyon-Diablo-Iron-Meteorite-261g-Shocked-end-cut-rm60-/320606489124?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0hash=item4aa5a2ca24#ht_500wt_1156 And most Canyon Diablos show no shock effects whatsoever: http://cgi.ebay.com/Canyon-Diablo-Meteorite-etched-Full-slice-320-9-grams-/230552115823?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0hash=item35adfa1a6f#ht_500wt_922 Well, aside from Neumann bands, but those are present due to extraterrestrial shock, and are present in almost all iron meteorites. Campo del Ceilo meteorites are different in that MOST pieces are highly thumbprinted/ablated, evidencing their high altitude breakup and ablation which smoothes the outer surface. Yep. Not an from explosive impact/explosive event which rips the iron to pieces like the Canyon Diablos. Nope. Again, it's due to weathering. Which is why, when you cut into Canyon Diablos, you see no traces of mechanical shock. You can't turn the outside of an iron into shrapnel without doing it to the inside as well. The trouble is that I've *never* seen a Canyon Diablo that, when cut, looked as though it was a piece of shrapnel. Never, ever. I've seen thousands of slices, ends, etc. Yikes. Beat that horse to a pulp.
