Re: [meteorite-list] Building Inspired by Meteorites
Yes, sounds like they want meteorites that look like buildings rather than make a building to look like a meteorite! :) Yuk - it really looks nothing like a meteorite IMHO - it's more like a collapsed tin can, - why not have jet black fusion crust over the exterior, which absorbs solar heat and saves energy bills? The inside is a missed opportunity too - Personally I thought that the latest design trends in modern buildings were moving away from silver balls hanging in corridors and white 1960's tables.. A stone meteorite fell into one of the villages of the Tara district. The fall was accompanied by detonations, while the sky was clear. It killed a pig. It was carried off by a vagabond sorcerer, some of whom were still existing at that time. Talk about being in the right place at the right time. That really conjures up some great images. [meteorite-list] Impact Diamonds - Article Invitation
All, From the saw blade ruining diamonds found within the Canyon Diablo iron to the over 70,000 estimated metric tonnes of microscopic diamonds created by the Ries impact, impact diamonds provide a fascinating introduction to the intense energies associated with impacts and to the high pressure alteration of minerals in both meteorites and impacted rock. There is probably someone on the list with the necessary photos and with the expertise or interest to write a really interesting article on this subject, and I'd like to issue an invitation for them to do so. If you write it, I'll publish it in Meteorite magazine. Be sure to let me know if you choose to do this so that I can let anyone else know that it is already being done. Hello Daniel, Definitely -- I find that the Harvard adsabs site is a great source of older papers. I'm glad you made a lower offer on it; every single one of those books is available for free viewing and download on Google Books. A few dollars for the convenience of having them on a CD is fine, but I'd make sure to let list-members know that they can download the files for free by searching for the titles on Google Books. [meteorite-list] The 100th Bulletin Now Out
List: I was looking a the lastest submissions in the Bulletin and noticed some OC's in the 100th Bulletin with the class: H~6, H~5, L~5... and so on. Apperently the tilde symbol means that the meteorite has an approximate petrologic type. So, what is the diiference between H5, H approximately 5, H 4-6, and H 4/6? Seems a little odd to me, but maybe there is an important reason for it. Re: [meteorite-list] The 100th Bulletin Now Out
These tildes have been used before. Here is a rundown of all the special notation you may see in chondrite classifications. For petrologic types: ~ (tilde) means that the petrologic type was not determined very precisely -- maybe just with a visual guess. H~5 is an H chondrite that is approximately petrologic type 5. / (slash) means indeterminate between the two numbers, and therefore you can never have H4/6... only H4/5 or H5/6. I see that there are a few 4/6 meteorites in the bulletin, and these were due to editorial oversights: they are mostly 4-6 breccias (or errors). I'll fix some of these soon. - (hyphen) means the chondrite is a breccia with components spanning the given range. An H3-5 chondrite has components that are type 3, type 5, and possible (but not necessarily) type 4. For chondrite groups: / (slash) is a problem, and can have two meanings. It can either mean indeterminate, as it does for petrologic types, or it can mean transitional or intermediate. There is no way to tell which is meant. I was going to propose a new notation for real transitional meteorites like Bjurböle, which currently is written L/LL4: the new notation would be L^LL4, with the caret indicating its real place in the middle. Perhaps we'll see this appear one day. Parentheses indicate uncertainty. For highly unequilibrated chondrites, it is nearly impossible to discern the difference between L and LL groups, and so they may be called L(LL)3, meaning probably L3, but possibly LL3. In fact, unless somebody did bulk chemistry and O isotopes to find out the real answer, probably every very low petrologic type OC with large chondrites should be really called L(LL) or LL(L). Note that there is NO existing notation for polymict breccias, say one with an L host meteorite and CM clasts, so you never see something like L-CM. Think what a mess Kaidun or Almahatta Sitta classifications would be if you used hyphens in the same way we do for petrologic types! Note also that not all classifiers have clearly understood the difference between - and / for petrologic types. Some of the classifications in the literature almost certainly have these reversed. Most of these get caught by NomCom, but not all. Aloha all, I want to warn everyone about a dishonorable dealer of meteorites who lives in Morocco by the name of Lahcen Ait Ha. Lahcen offered a 748g lot of NWA 859 Taza iron meteorites by showing me pictures of them by email. Not only that, but I have doubts whether the material is meteoritic at all. Needless to say, I returned the material immediately and contacted Lahcen to get a refund. He has stalled and to this point has refused to return my money. Several honorable Moroccan meteorite dealers have contacted Lahcen to talk sense into him to return my money, but these efforts have been fruitless. I have now waited over two months for resolution and yet there is no solution in sight, despite my efforts and those of my friends in Morocco. http://bigkahuna-meteorites.com/_BogusTaza.jpg I must say that the vast majority of meteorite dealers in Morocco are of unquestionable integrity and good character. It is a pity that such a person is able to continue to perpetrate his fraudulent actions there. I implore all to NEVER DEAL WITH Lahcen Ait Ha. [meteorite-list] Fw: Warning about Lahcen Ait Ha
I too have been had by a dishonest Moroccan dealer I am embarrassed to say. I have have many good dealings with this person in the past slowly building a trusting meteorite buying relationship. This person also sent me a photo of a meteorite that I wished to buy, a very rare type. When I received the stone, it was a very obvious weathered H chondrite and not the meteorite that I agreed to buy and paid a great sum of money for. This person has promised to send me other meteorites to make up for the mistake but has not yet done so. This has been going on since November 2010. I have instead gotten many excuses, the latest being the border problems with Algeria do not allow for him to get the stones that I will accept to make up for the money owed to me as Moroccans cannot send money out of the country. I have been very patient with this person but I will soon expose his name to the list in order to protect other buyers who may fall prey to his scam. I still hold a small glimmer of hope that he make make this right but I am very doubtful at this point. I have been patient with this person for more than 8 months now but I am rapidly losing my patience and hope that he will keep his many promises to me. I will give this person one more month to clear his name and reputation and then I will expose him to the list for the thief and liar that he is in order to keep others from falling prey to his dishonest scam. If he makes good, then I will owe him my apologies. I have had and continue to have good dealings with no problems whatsoever with the following dealers: Abdelfattah Gharrad, Abdelaziz Alhyane and Ahmad Bouragaa. I would highly recommend these dealers as I have dealt with them for many years with no problems at all. All very trustworthy men. All it takes is a couple of rotten Moroccans to give everyone a bad name though. I, as Gary Fujihara does, hate to make negative posts but also feel it necessary to expose the dishonest dealers to the list. I will keep you posted and I hope the list of bad Moroccan delears does not continue to grow. These are desperate times and the time to be all the more careful with our hard earned money. Be careful out there. You gave this dealer two months of chances to make the deal right and if he had quietly gotten away with his scam, other people would have gotten burned as well. Whatever that material is, it is certainly not Taza, nor is it any meteorite at all. I don't know what it is, but it looks very odd and not very meteoritic. It is certainly not the same material pictured in the initial offer photo. Do you still have this bogus material? If so, maybe you get could Blaine to shoot his Element Gun at it and get some idea of what that stuff is. Is it some kind of sandblasted slag? [meteorite-list] O.T. Copper Hunt Keweenaw Peninsula Michigan
Hi List, Please excuse the off topic post but this is too cool and I can't help it. In May I followed up my successful Nevada dry lake meteorite hunt with a trip to the Keweenaw Peninsula in the upper peninsula of Michigan to metal detect for float copper. I went with two friends, Darryl and Greg and we had a great time. We found 4 float specimens, copper ores, agates, and more interesting in a way, I found an ingot, but not a typical ingot. While metal detecting a remote beach where no copper smelting and little mining is known to have taken place, I found an ingot of an iron and copper mix. Experts in the mining history of the region say it is unique and unlike any ingots they know of. All the known ingots are larger and are nearly pure copper, not containing iron. I thought it was from a shipwreck at first because I found it on the shore of Lake Superior but they say it is smaller than what was typically put on ship. It's 5.75 inches long by ~.825 inches wide on all sides and weighs about 1.75 pounds. It's another mystery! I find the weirdest things. http://s934.photobucket.com/albums/ad190/alienrockfarm/Keweenaw%20Peninnsula%20Copper%20Hunt%20May%202011/ Sincerely, Larry Atkins IMCA # 1941 Ebay alienrockfarm __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing-list-archives.html Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

[meteorite-list] Why are Carbonado stones not on the Meteoritical Bulletin Database
Hello Listers This has always interested me and am wondering why Carbonado black diamonds from space aren't meteorites? Or are they, but not posted on the Meteoritical Bulletin Database. Why I ask is I read everywhere that the Cardonado came from an asteroid that slammed into Earth. Not long ago a 59 caret Cardonado sold at auction. Here's the details of the auction. Lot No: 3200 Large Carbonado – A Black Diamond from Space Brazil or Central African Republic The rarest and hardest diamonds on Earth are carbonados from outer space. Most carbonado black diamonds recovered have been rather small, weighing 3 carats or less. This shiny black and green stone is an exception, weighing 59.25 carats. Carbonados do not resemble any other diamonds on Earth because they were created by an exploding star before the formation of our solar system and delivered to Earth by an asteroid over two billion years ago. The present specimen is completely original with some reflectivity of individual crystals within the complete mass. It is both beautiful and exceptionally large. Carbonados are older than any other rocks found on Earth. Measures 27mm x 17mm x 15mm, Weighs 59.25ct Sold for $5,124 inclusive of Buyer's Premium http://www.bonhams.com/eur/auction/19371/lot/3200/ Now if this is true and they came from an asteroid wouldnt they be on the Meteoritical Bulletin Database?
