Re: [meteorite-list] A Cosmic Catastrophe: The Great Clovis Comet Debate
What fascinates me is that with a thousand curious, adventurous people on this list, hardly anyone is following up the remarkable ground study leads provided by Cox, Barretto, and Murray, or pondering the implications of the Mark Boslough supercomputer simulations at Sandia Lab of directed blasts resulting from air bursts a few km above the ground. America -- scoured from sea to shining sea -- so much strange evidence everywhere, everyone's just taken it for granted as normal... go out and see for yourself! Much can be done with Google Earth, Google Maps, and NASA WorldWind -- look around your own area -- I'll be happy to provide local leads. I suggest you ask me on this list, and I'll provide my leads quickly, as science is a picnic best shared publicly Louisiana is a tough one, Paul, due to the sea level rise since 13 Ka, heavy rains, thick vegetation, coastal tsunamis, but note the huge underwater debris dumps far south deep in the Gulf, and, I bet, the fractal collection of coastal lakes has never actually been adequately explained. I'll see what specific candidates I will find for you in Louisiana... The archaeological, paleontological, geological, and astronomical data supporting the notion of a significant Pleistocene impact are very thin, and getting thinner all the time. Certainly, the consensus viewpoint is that there was no impact. Of course, that doesn't mean that reputable scientists aren't still looking at the hypothesis, but they represent a small minority of the scientists with an interest in this area. If you've never heard this before, please see the list archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com/msg98693.html What you might not know is that I personally took responsibility for (dis)proving the authenticity of his sales after noticing that much of what he was selling looked "funny" -- starting back in January 2010. Ultimately, a number of samples were sent directly from people who had purchased them from John/Bryan to a lab for analysis, and, as the above emails details, an "Ash Creek" turned out to be an H-chondrite, a fragment of "Zunhua" turned out to be indistinguishable from Tamdakht (Zunhua is an L-chondrite, not an H), and an iron that he'd been selling as Deport turned out to be what is most likely a Campo del Cielo. His explanations of how these mistakes had occurred were extremely dissatisfying; the IMCA board apparently thought as much, because the opted to remove him from the membership. The trouble is that someone, apparently, told him that I did much of the investigative work. How do I know this? Jeff Kuyken, on the IMCA board of directors, just informed me that John/Bryan has changed his ebay username to "meteoritekid," my old internet alias. My ebay username is *not* "meteoritekid." Please do not buy from anyone using the name "meteoritekid" on ebay. John/Bryan is attempting to impersonate me online in order to get back at me for having tracked his shady dealings down. I would not personally trust the authenticity of any specimen he sells. I am currently taking a geology field mapping course in Montana and do not have a working phone. When I return home in a few days, I will be pursuing this matter with ebay. If that does not work, I will pursue it legally. [meteorite-list] Important - Please Read
Hello All, Many of you know that a man named John/Bryan Scarborough was recently removed from the IMCA for selling meteorites that were analytically proven to be misrepresented. If anyone on here has experience with similar issues within ebay, I'd like whatever help I can get. - Do not buy from the ebay seller "meteoritekid." Hi list, when I started collecting meteorites I had bought such item fron an IMCA member as "NANTAN". The reality is that it is "Mekong River Iron" . The simple negative Ni-Test shows that it contain not yet more than 0.1 ppm Ni metal, a MUST of iron containing meteorites. m42protosun -Original-Nachricht- Subject: [meteorite-list] meteorite or not? Re: [meteorite-list] meteorite or not?
Hi Dan and List, I see a ton of these on eBay and they have been there for years. They are obvious meteorwrongs and look more like river rock than meteorites. For eBay to allow these sellers to operate in their venue shows that eBay does not care about the integrity of it's marketplace. It's so bad, I refuse to consider bidding on anything on eBay that originates in the Far East. If the seller is in Thailand, China, Vietnam, or anywhere else in that part of the world, I won't touch it - I don't care how good it looks. Caveat emptor applies to every possible sale, but even more so on eBay. Sellers who continue to offer these bogus specimens and knowingly rip people off, should be banned from eBay at the very least. Or, better yet, we should fill an extra-large tube sock with these fake rocks and pummel the sellers into a coma with them. Best regards, MikeG PS - if anyone wants any "meteorites" like the one on eBay that started this discussion, go check your local railroad tracks - there are thousands of them laying on the ground for free. -- - Galactic Stone & Ironworks - Meteorites & Amber (Michael Gilmer) Website - http://www.galactic-stone.com Facebook - http://tinyurl.com/42h79my News Feed - http://www.galactic-stone.com/rss/126516 Twitter - http://twitter.com/galacticstone EOM - http://www.encyclopedia-of-meteorites.com/collection.aspx?id=1564 - On 7/13/11, Dan Furlan wrote: > I'm not 100% sure but i don't think this item on ebay is a meteorite > 120738890611 > > link to item: > > http://cgi.ebay.ca/2-6LB-Original-Iron-Meteorite-Specimen-China-/120738890611?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1c1c994373 > __ > Visit the Archives at > http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing-list-archives.html > Meteorite-list mailing list > Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com > http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list > __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing-list-archives.html Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

Dear List Members, here are my new NWA iron - NWA 6716. It is a very interesting and double recrystallized IIE iron. All slices are sold very fast in the German Meteorite Forum. Now i have also cut the last piece. (the flat endcut) And so are for sale now the both last available pieces. The inside of the iron shows a coarse grained recrystallized matrix of heat in space. The fine recrystallized areas are a result of heat by fall on earth. A very fine and absolutely interesting iron! The both endcuts shows a very very thick reheated rim with more than 2cm !! Very interesting also are the very rare silicate inclusions. Definitely no meteorite. Just compare the size with the weight. It is too light to be solid iron, it's just a bit of iron oxide and iron hydroxide concretion at best. 1x0.9x0.4 dm = 0.36 dm3 1.160/0.36 = 3.2 kg/dm3 Iron nickel meteorites have a density close to 8 so it's way off in density. /Göran Dan Furlan skrev 2011-07-13 08:05: I'm not 100% sure but i don't think this item on ebay is a meteorite 120738890611 link to item: http://cgi.ebay.ca/2-6LB-Original-Iron-Meteorite-Specimen-China-/120738890611?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1c1c994373 __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing-list-archives.html Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing-list-archives.html Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
