[meteorite-list] FCM: AD: Thin Sections Super Special Sale - Meteorites Impactites 33$ each !! (no matter whether achondrite or chondrite, find or fall!!)

2013-01-17 Thread Martin Altmann
Dear Fans of the FC Meteorite House,
and all, who still want to become a fan.

We launch today a really respectable special sale
of thin sections (TS) at unrivaled, low prices.

An offer, which is so fantastic, that we don't have to write many words.

We all know, who is the largest supplier of TSses in the collectors' scene.
Chondrites starting there at 70-75$, hardly any achondritic TS found below
100$.

Our TSses don't have that Mercedes-Benz-High-End-quality (neither btw. do
the TSses used for classifications own that),
as they don't have the standard thickness of 35µm,
but are between 20µm and 30µm.

Nevertheless they are very very useable
and of course that circumstance is more than compensated in the price.

All sections are covered.

Here now the center of the AD:

33$ each!

No matter whether chondrite or achondrite, no matter whether the surface is
small or large, no matter whether find or fall, no matter how rare the
locales is.

Therefore, we think, not only apt for the specialized collector,
but especially also for these, who maybe are interested to try once,
whether thin sections could be a field of collection for them too!

Let us start with the impactites,
because impactite thin sections seem to be even rarer than meteoritic ones.

The direct scans are large enough to decipher the labeling.
Given is always the kind of rock, the name of the impact structure, its
diameter and age.

To offer the FCM has:

as well as

- Kentland

And here are coming the meteorite thin sections!

For the case, that you can't read the labels so well,
let us list them quickly.

I found a 4.4g oriented meteorite. It looks like a weathered OC but on a
closer inspection the back side shows a frothy brown fusion crust with a

cut it and find out that it is only a OC and ruin the oriented meteorite. On
a long shot maybe a Impact Melt or CC chondrite?

[meteorite-list] Museum Display

2013-01-17 Thread John Lutzon
Hello All,

Ray Watts has planned, organized, and set up a meteorite display at the
Haldimand Museum in Ontario, CA. It's a four month diplay and Ray would like
to thank many of you for your help in his endeavor.

He's having trouble posting to the Met-List but wishes to extend his thanks.
His display is having a good response from the locals and schools. Here's a
small clip, in part, from a local newspaper.

To learn more, plan to visit the museum and see this exciting exhibit
exploring meteorites, space and the new frontier. The exhibit is on until
April 15th. Special thanks to Ray Watts and the International Meteorite
Collectors Association for the loan of the meteorites and expertise's. The
museum is open Monday - Friday from 10:00 am to 4:30 pm. For further
information on this exhibit, please contact the museum at 905-772-5880 or by
email: krichard...@haldimandcounty.on.ca

Thanks for your efforts Ray!!

All best, John Lutzon

Re: [meteorite-list] Deteriorating Situation in Mali

2013-01-17 Thread Anne Black

Quite right.
The whole region is archaeologically very rich.
There are also many private libraries of very ancient books, in many
cases written over a thousand years ago on gazelle skins. Those had
been kept hidden deep in the desert for many centuries who care deeply
for them, and they were only starting to come out very recently. I hope
their owners had the time to put them back in their hiding places.
You can see just a few of those books in private libraries in the oasis
of eastern Morocco, like Tamegroute. At least those books are safe for
the time being.

Subject: [meteorite-list] Deteriorating Situation in Mali

Hi List,

Some of the events going on in the Saharan Desert bear watching by the
meteorite world.

First, fundamentalist Islamists have seized control of northern Mali
and ancient city of Timbuktu. I respect Islam and Muslims, but these
fundamentalists are affiliated with Al-Qaeda and they have enforced
Sharia law on the residents of northern Mali and Timbuktu. Worse,
these militants are heavily-armed with black market weapons from the
fall of the Gaddafi regime in Libya.

Why should meteorite collectors/dealers/hunters care?

The fundamentalists are violent enemies of science and they have no
tolerance for other religions or traditions. Much of Mali and
Timbuktu is Sufi and the Sufi traditions are considered heretical to
many fundamentalists. As we sit here discussing this, militants are
destroying cultural heritage sites and wiping out anything that
doesn't agree with their version of Sharia law. Remember what the
Taliban did to the Buddhas of Bamiyan? Expect more of the same in
Timbuktu.

The violence has the potential to spread to the neighboring countries
of Niger, Burkina Faso, Algeria, and Mauritania. These are all
places that are familiar to the collectors of NWA meteorites. The
strewnfields of Bassikounou, Gao, and many others are now too
dangerous for outsiders. If you have been thinking about a meteorite
hunting expedition to Mali or Niger, you may want to seriously rethink
that idea now.

In the last year, we have witnessed one war that is destroying one of
the most ancient landscapes on Earth - Syria. Syria is being reduced
to rubble, and now the famous city of Timbuktu is going to suffer the
same fate - either from the fundamentalist militants or from the
French military efforts to expel them.

Let us all take a minute and stop what we are doing. Regardless of
your faith, pray for the residents of the Sahara and that this
violence will stop. The Saharan Desert is one of the most beautiful
(yet desolate) places on Earth and this conflict has the potential to
spread like a cancer to consume much of the land of desert meteorites.

Best regards and happier huntings,

MikeG
