 Hi Dirk,

A very small amount of equivalent energy is involved with
free electron release. Perhaps the moving electrons
cause localized magnetic fields, but far lower than those
needed to have large-scale charge separation.

I can see the electron clouds on the radar because free
electrons are conductive. But energy exchange is kept
 pretty locally.

Now, posing in intriguing situation - lets say a
russian-like event occurs over a supercell
thunderstorm. It could skim across the anvil.
The line of conducting plasma would short circuit the
heavily charge separated areas (Charges migrate due to the
supercooled freezing process). I think you would get a
 nice lightshow.

Kind of interesting... CC meteortites, low
pressure. Volatile amino acids, carbon, and
lightning, Would be a nice situation for early life
 forms.

2013-02-28 Thread Mark Ford
More like L5-6 imho... seems an awful lot of metal in some pics I've seen.. I
reckon this one will be like NWA869 (L3.8-L9!) i.e. it will vary between finds,
it's a big fall after all, which means it might be a little more varied than
usual.

I'm disappointed but the lack of 'pointless speculation' on a classification on
this list! - normally this list has it classified, weighed and half sold off
before it's even recovered! :)

I have heard that the Chelyabinsk Meteorite fall could be a LL5?? Any
thoughts on that. I for one do not have the eye for that, but I have been told
that who did some slicing of this meteorite said from what they could tell that
it could be an LL5 from looking at it in person.

Re: [meteorite-list] Meteoroid/Asteroid Electro-Magnetic Disruption and Charge Properties?

2013-02-28 Thread James Beauchamp

In plasma situations where electrons and nuclei are freely moving about, the
math supports a very, very tiny chance that nuclei will collide with enough
energy to merge or break apart into other isotopes.

Applying a rate of trillions of possibilities in a volume, over a period of
time, the probability becomes realizable that somewhere, something happened.

There's a whole sub-culture of people who build fuzors in their garages for
the novelty of saying there's a chance something is fusing in that glowing
cloud.

Jorge,

1) I am not selling any material from this fall, nor do I plan to.

2) So much of the material you're selling in your ebay account is so
painfully misrepresented that I fear no threat from you. You're
either woefully ignorant, or a cheat. Either way, you have no grounds
to be threatening anyone who points this out.

Written proof is worth as much as the person who's writing it, which
means nothing in your case.

You sell common NWA's as meteorites from Oman, Burkina Faso, and the
Atacama, have already sold a piece of an H-chondrite as Chelyabinsk
material:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Chelyabinsk-RUSSIA-2013-Meteor-Event-1-20gr-Very-Rare-Meteorite-Specimen-/321079087502?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0hash=item4ac1ce118e

To say nothing of the mislabeled Canyon Diablo, Sikhote Alin, and
several smaller specimens of rare falls that you've listed in recent
months that have consisted of caliche-encrusted fragments of NWA
meteorites. At any given point, I'd say about a third to a half of
your non-NWA material is misrepresented (or perhaps accidentally
mislabeled, but the end result is the same).

You're trying to make money off of the people in our community by
deceiving us. I wouldn't expect mush sympathy here.

The small fragment you've already sold and the 19g stone you currently

Chelyabinsk is an LL5.
I would suggest refunding the buyer of the 1.20 gram fragment you've
already sold and pulling the 19 gram stone.
Maybe I'll try writing some Russian labels for my Bassikounou's and
listing them for $20+/g. They'll have labels, right? That means they
must be authentic.

Jason, I was asked by the owner of the METEORITE LIST not to write any
offensive language or insult any one publicly on this list but
apparently you don't respect that policy.

All I said is that my Russian meteorite specimens on Ebay come with a
card of authenticity from the Russian seller. Before you start
accusing me of anything please ask someone to interpret the card for
you. The name of the seller and his respective residence is on that
card and to me that is all the written proof I need.

 Jorge,
 1) I am not selling any material from this fall, nor do I plan to.
 2) So much of the material you're selling in your ebay account is so
painfully misrepresented that I fear no threat from you. You're
either woefully ignorant, or a cheat. Either way, you have no grounds
to be threatening anyone who points this out.
Written proof is worth as much as the person who's writing it, which
apparently means nothing in your case.

Chelyabinsk type meteorite was unique for Russia - scientists
RIA Novosti
February 28, 2013

MOSCOW, Feb. 28 - RIA Novosti. Experts Moscow laboratory Meteoritics
finished their primary research on fragments of a meteorite that
fell near Chelyabinsk in mid-February. As it turned out, this type of
meteorites have never found on the territory of Russia, RIA Novosti,
Mikhail Nazarov, head of the laboratory.

February 15 morning residents of several regions of the Urals observed the
meteor,
and then there was a flash and a powerful explosion . The shock wave damaged
buildings and knocked out a lot of glass in Chelyabinsk, and more than a
thousand people were injured. A Ural Federal University expedition discovered
earlier
in Lake Chebarkul meteorite particles, and chemical analysis showed that in the
Urals
were ordinary chondrites - a type of stony meteorite.

Expedition laboratory Meteoritics Institute of Geochemistry and Analytical
Chemistry,
Russian Academy of Sciences Vernadsky delivered to Moscow about 1.5 kilograms
of
meteorite fragments. According to Nazarov, to date, the first phase of the
research
of submitting an application of the meteorite to the international catalog have
been completed.

This is an ordinary chondrite type LL5, shock fraction S4. Such meteorites are
relatively rare, in the flow of ordinary chondrites are only about 2%. Our
territory
of previously observed, - said the source.

LL chondrites are low in iron and other metals, as well as relatively large
chondrules (rounded grains, which got its name: chondrites). Figure 5 is a
petrological class, indicating the kind of geochemical changes undergone a
meteorite. In Russia, this type of of meteorite has never been found before.

Like I have said many times.  Collector confidence is at an all time low when
it comes to new falls due to a few bad people.  It only takes one person
substituting material from one fall to totally ruin the confidence in another.
This is the main reason I no longer collect recent falls or chase them for
that matter.  Even genuine material comes under unnecessary scrutiny and is
assumed fake before being proven real in many cases.

I think dealers shouldn't assume somebody is guilty without it being blatantly
obvious.  It is not the American way to assume somebody is guilty before being
proven innocent.  Many have forgotten American history and should crack the
books!

Happy Collecting,

living extremely sheltered lives! I'm guessing none of them have ever been

 ENSISHEIM “METEORITE 2013” NEWS
 (January 26, 2013)

 Dear meteorite friends Meteorite-Central List

Please find here the preliminary news concerning the 14th edition of
our meteorite show “Ensisheim-Meteorite 2013”, expecting this will
reach you in time before you start the next “Tucson blast” where most
of you who live “overseas” (and from the vast world as well) will
 gather soon.

This info completes the official flyer that will be ready in a couple
of weeks and that I will be glad to forward you individually, upon
 request.

Further show details will be also sent to the List in a couple of
months, as every year. Here are just the main changes useful for those
wishing to book tables and foresee specific arrangements.

 SHOW DATES:

 Saturday June 22 (9:30-18:00) and Sunday June 23 (9:30-16:00), 2012
(the weekend preceding the “Mineral Gem” show that is held in Ste
Marie-aux-Mines, relatively nearby (~ 80 km), with Friday June 21 as
 the “dealer’s day”).

 SHOW LOCATION:

Exceptionally this year, THE SHOW LOCATION MUST BE CHANGED!

Indeed, the famous Regency Palace which is the usual and unavoidable
place to set the show, is subject to heavy works that unfortunately
will not be completed by the due date.

While the external buildings are expected to be reconditioned, the
interior halls will by no means be accessible in June: all the rooms
and corridors will be restored and repainted while an elevator (lift)
will be built so as to facilitate the rise and handling of your heavy
meteorite boxes in future. (Hey, never worry, the famous medieval
 spiral staircase will stay untouched).

Naturally in 2014, for the 15th Anniversary of the show coinciding
with the 30th Anniversary of the Confraternity of Guardians creation,
a brand renovated Regency Palace will welcome you again!

For 2013 (only) we have obtained another separate building called
“FOYER St MARTIN”, which is located quite close (about 350 m) to the
Regency palace, and just separated from the “Domaine du Moulin” hotel
by the main street (distance ~150 m).

You can find the place, the building picture and the access map in the
 following link:

http://www.jds.fr/agenda/manifestations/expo-bourse-aux-meteorites-2013-a-ensisheim-53539_A

The “Foyer” consists in one large 18.6 x 12 meter room, resembling the
 Regency main hall, though larger.
The usual 160x80 cm tables will be arranged similar to the Regency
arrangement, namely all around the walls and also arranged in a
 “middle square”.
The daylight basically comes from the glass ceiling, and will provide
a uniform illumination (personal lighting is always allowed). This
means that the characteristics (light etc) of every place in the hall
 will be practically the same.

A small bar, dressing room, telephone room, restrooms … are adjacent
 to the main hall.
Opposite the entry is a podium accessible from both hall sides by 2
staircases. The podium will host the genuine Ensisheim meteorite in
its display window, the thematic exhibit (Meteorites from Antarctica –
see below) and the consignment room, all visible from the main floor.

3 doors on the west side lead to a large terrace (18x8 m) where at
least 4 tents will be erected, each containing 4 dealer tables.

The terrace itself adjoins a large park providing all the usual
facilities (tables for food, leisure, snacks, tent for dinner party,
enthroning ceremonies, Friday friendly drink, every day drinks, music,
 beverage bars, dance…).
In fact, all what was set on the Regency main square will be shifted
to that park next to the “Foyer” terrace.

[meteorite-list] Scientists at Princess Elisabeth Antarctica Discover 18kg Antarctic Meteorite

Scientists at Princess Elisabeth Antarctica Discover 18kg Antarctic Meteorite
International Polar Expedition Press Release
February 28, 2013

A team of scientists working at Princess Elisabeth Antarctica have
recently discovered a meteorite weighing 18kg embedded in the East
Antarctic ice sheet, the largest such meteorite found in the region
since 1988.

The eight members of the SAMBA project, from Universite Libre de Bruxelles
(ULB)
and Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), Japan's National Institute of Polar
Research (NIPR) and Tokyo University were searching for meteorites scattered
across the Nansen Ice Field on January 28, when they found the 18kg ordinary
chondrite. The team discovered a total of 425 meteorites, with a total
weight of 75kg during the 40 day expedition, at an altitude of 2,900m,
140km south of Belgium's Princess Elisabeth Antarctica research base.

This meteorite was a very unexpected find for us, not only due to
its weight, but because we don't normally find such large meteorites
in Antarctica, said Vinciane Debaille, a geologist from Universite
Libre de Bruxelles, who led the Belgian team during the expedition
This is the biggest meteorite found in East Antarctica for 25 years,
so it's a very special discovery for us, only made possible by the existence
and location of Princess Elisabeth Antarctica.

The SAMBA project contributesto the US and Japan-led global collection
of Antarctic meteorites, and is an initiative of VUB and ULB, in
collaboration with the Japanese Institute of Polar Research. SAMBA is
supported by the Belgian Science Policy (BELSPO) and the International
Polar Foundation.

Initial field analysis by the scientists suggests that the 18kg
meteorite is an ordinary chondrite, the most abundant kind of
meteorite. The fusion crust - the meteorite's outer casing - was eroded,
allowing the scientists to inspect the rock underneath. The meteorite is
currently undergoing a special thawing process in Japan - to ensure
water doesn't get inside the rock - but will be brought to Belgium in
the future.

We study meteorites in order to better understand how the solar
system formed, how it evolved, how the Earth became such a unique
planet in our solar system, said Debaille. This season's SAMBA
mission was a success both in terms of the number and weight of the
meteorites we found. Two years ago, we found less than 10kg. This
year, we found so much that we had to call the travel agency -
because we had 75kg of meteorites to take home.

Princess Elisabeth Antarctica is the world's first zero emission polar
research station, and is operated by the International Polar Foundation,
in partnership with the Belgian Polar Secretariat. Princess Elisabeth
Antarctica's design and construction seamlessly integrates passive
building technologies, renewable wind and solar energy, water treatment
facilities, continuously monitored power demand and a smart grid for
maximising energy efficiency. Located in East Antarctica's Sor Rondane
Mountains, Princess Elisabeth Antarctica welcomes scientists from around
the world to conduct research in this little-studied and pristine
environment.

Both Princess Elisabeth Antarctica and the International Polar
Foundation are proud to support the research work of the Belgian and
Japanese meteorite team, said expedition leader Alain Hubert. By

[meteorite-list] Oriented Meteorites?

2013-02-28 Thread Brandon D.
Hello Everyone,

I have a question I'm sure can be answered here to my satisfaction.

What defines an Oriented meteorite? I've noticed a trend starting where
people have begun calling any meteorite with a rounded edge oriented or
slightly oriented.

What truly defines an oriented meteorite? I have dozens of shields with radial
flowlines and bullet shaped stones and irons, so I see orientation, but what's
the true criteria?

Thank you ahead for any replies.

Best,
Brandon D.

[meteorite-list] Computer Swap on Curiosity Rover

2013-02-28 Thread Ron Baalke

http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/news.php?release=2013-078

Computer Swap on Curiosity Rover
Jet Propulsion Laboratory
February 28, 2013

Mars Science Laboratory Mission Status Report

PASADENA, Calif. - The ground team for NASA's Mars rover Curiosity has
switched the rover to a redundant onboard computer in response to a
memory issue on the computer that had been active.

The intentional swap at about 2:30 a.m. PST today (Thursday, Feb. 28)
put the rover, as anticipated, into a minimal-activity precautionary
status called safe mode. The team is shifting the rover from safe mode
to operational status over the next few days and is troubleshooting the
condition that affected operations yesterday. The condition is related
to a glitch in flash memory linked to the other, now-inactive, computer.

We switched computers to get to a standard state from which to begin
restoring routine operations, said Richard Cook of NASA's Jet
Propulsion Laboratory, project manager for the Mars Science Laboratory
Project, which built and operates Curiosity.

Like many spacecraft, Curiosity carries a pair of redundant main
computers in order to have a backup available if one fails. Each of the
computers, A-side and B-side, also has other redundant subsystems linked
to just that computer. Curiosity is now operating on its B-side, as it
did during part of the flight from Earth to Mars. It operated on its
A-side from before the August 2012 landing through Wednesday.

While we are resuming operations on the B-side, we are also working to
determine the best way to restore the A-side as a viable backup, said
JPL engineer Magdy Bareh, leader of the mission's anomaly resolution team.

The spacecraft remained in communications at all scheduled communication
windows on Wednesday, but it did not send recorded data, only current
status information. The status information revealed that the computer
had not switched to the usual daily sleep mode when planned.
Diagnostic work in a testing simulation at JPL indicates the situation
involved corrupted memory at an A-side memory location used for
addressing memory files.

Scientific investigations by the rover were suspended Wednesday and
today. Resumption of science investigations is anticipated within
several days. This week, laboratory instruments inside the rover have
been analyzing portions of the first sample of rock powder ever
collected from the interior of a rock on Mars.

NASA's Mars Science Laboratory Project is using Curiosity to assess
whether areas inside Gale Crater ever offered a habitable environment
for microbes. JPL, a division of the California Institute of Technology
in Pasadena, manages the project for NASA's Science Mission Directorate
in Washington.

Re: [meteorite-list] Physics of entry and bolides

2013-02-28 Thread E.P. Grondine
Hi Dirk, all -

These topics were covered in easy to understand terms By Elton Jones years ago.
I do not know if his notes are available in the meteorite list archives.

Essentially, the bolide is what happens when the front of the meteoroid tries
to go through its back, but I'll have to leave it to Elton (or one of your
using the archive) to make it all clear once again.

all the best,

Re: [meteorite-list] sharp protrusion from an iron meteorite

2013-02-28 Thread jason utas
Hello Adam, All,

Actually, Uruacu does appear to be distinct from Campo del Cielo.
Uruacu appears to be a much older meteorite that has weathered in
different conditions, and many individuals show cohenite when cut -- a
mineral I have never seen in Campo del Cielo. Generally speaking,
Campos run the full range from freshly-fusion crusted to rusty lumps,
and everything in-between. But, Campo fell within the past ~5,000
years, so we're talking about rapid weathering in a wet environment
(also why it's a ruster). Uruacu fell in a drier area, and most
individuals exhibit a much more uniform covering of shale that does
not readily flake off due to rusting. They seem to have fallen much
longer ago, and are generally more weathered due to the fact that
they've been around for longer. Uruacu generally resists rusting
better.

It would be like comparing Sikhote Alin to Henbury. No Henburies I
know of rust, but, by and large, they're not as fresh as most
Sikhotes. But some Sikhotes appear to have fallen into swampy areas
and look pretty bad -- and rust. It's hard to mix the two up.

The trouble is that I've also seen Campos sold as Uruacu, which
complicates things. Uruacu is a very old fall. Even some reputable
dealers have been selling specimens of new Campo (crust,
regmaglypts) as Uruacu. Very different. I assume this is due to
dishonest suppliers.

There's a stunning, fairly large Uruacu for sale at the moment. Not
mine, but I wonder if this will bring it out of the woodwork.

Regards,
Jason

Isn't Baygorria another meteorite with a fake provenance? Basically a
cleaned up Campo with a delaminated section protruding after a
not-so-careful makeover. I would just tell him to seek first aid so he
doesn't catch the dreaded Lawrencite disease.

Subject: [meteorite-list] sharp protrusion from an iron meteorite

I recieved a well prepared letter from a fellow with a question that I can't
begin to answer. Maybe someone on the list has seen this kind of thing
 before.

He bought a Baygorria (Iron, IAB complex) from a dealer 3 years ago. He
picked it up recently to find a metal protrusion sticking out of the thing
that was sharp enough to prick his thumb.

Here's a jpg of his scanned photo.

 What's happened here?
