Phil,

70% Nitric Acid is fairly common. Nital mixtures vary. So 'best' is
subjective.

Very dangerous stuff! Use safety gear.

Hello, I have a roughly cutted Muonionalusta slice to make beatiful.
I will grind, polishing and etching it ... and after for prevent rust and
stabilize it I'm planning to use the method alcohol + water + NaOH .
But I have few question:

Ethanol at 96% works fine?
I have to use distilled water or normal water?

For 100ml of solution I have to use 70ml of ethanol and 30ml of water, is
this proportion correct?
How many grams (or spoons) of NaOh I have to use?
How many days I have to leave the slice in the solution? 7-10 days? In this
period I have to change the solution or the first potion works fine for all
these days?

And after? What I have to do? I have to wash it with ethanol and after dry
up in oven, 80°C?
After could I also put some rust prevent varnish?

Any other tip are welcomed!!!

Thanks a lot!!!

[meteorite-list] Denver Show Chelyabinsk and other meteorite prices.

2013-09-12 Thread Shawn Alan
Hello Listers,

So I stopped by the Rock show yesterday at the Ramada inn for a bit and walked
around with a friend. I saw a lot of minerals and some meteorites
and the ones I saw, it seemed Chelyabinsk was popular. The lowest price I saw
was $8 a gram and the the top was around $30, but those where for cherry
pieces. The new jedi cm2 was priced at $30 with one room. Sikhot Alin was
prices at .50c a gram to 3$ a gram for cherry pieces. Ill be there again on
Friday and
that's when ill take my time in the rooms and also be at the auction so I can
meet people for the first time in person and also hope to see people I haven't
seen for ages.
Lastly, if your there and have a room let me know where your room is at :)

Thanks, Derek.

2013-09-12 Thread Aras Jonikas

I have purchased Nital from chemical-supermarket.com. Premixed and much easier
to not have to worry about improper mixing techniques and proper ratios.
Shipping is a little costly due to safety, but still worth it for me. I
normally get the Nital 10% Nitric, but they have different ratios available.
They have a 69.5% concentration of nitric acid also if you want.

[meteorite-list] Possible Ancient Meteorite

2013-09-12 Thread Roman Jirasek

I had an archaeologist email me today asking about custom labels, and also

Copied email follows

I am an Archaeologist and recovered a meteorite in 2013, on private
property in Sparta Greece. This meteorite was found inside an ancient vase,
and was buried with human remains. We dated this site to approximately, 220
BCE to 130 BCE, but have not yet carbon dated the item.

I do not know of any meteorite falling on or near Sparta Greece. Since the
meteorite was found inside an honorary vase, we suspect it was held in high
regards, and more than likely to remember a battle.

The only battle recorded that had a meteorite that fell during the battle;
was with ancient Turkey and the Spartans.

It actually stopped the battle for two days, thinking it was a sign from the
gods. Many of the Spartans recovered portions of the meteorite is a sign of
victory from the God of Mars.

I have enclosed a picture of the meteorite. Can you tell me? Of any
meteorites that fell prior to 220 BCE, since we know that was the earliest
date, since the meteorites was buried with the hoplite soldier. We assume
the meteorite obviously fell before that date.

This would help us, with dating the find.

Additionally what would the selling price be if it were to be sold. The
meteorite?
