[meteorite-list] Comet ISON Outburst

2013-11-14 Thread Ron Baalke

Space Weather News for Nov. 14, 2013
http://spaceweather.com

COMET ISON OUTBURST: Observers around the world are reporting a sharp
increase in the brightness of sundiving Comet ISON. Formerly dim, it is
now on the threshold of naked-eye visibility. Comet ISON is plunging toward
the sun for a perilous pass through the solar atmosphere on Thanksgiving
Day (Nov. 28th). This could be the first of many brightening events as
intensifying solar heat erodes material away from the comet's nucleus.

[meteorite-list] MESSENGER Detects Comets ISON and Encke, Prepares For Closer Encounters

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

http://messenger.jhuapl.edu/gallery/sciencePhotos/image.php?gallery_id=2image_id=1296

MESSENGER DETECTS COMETS ISON AND ENCKE, PREPARES FOR CLOSER ENCOUNTERS

NASA's Mercury-orbiting MESSENGER spacecraft has captured images of
two comets -- 2P/Encke and C/2012 S1 (ISON) -- setting the stage for
observations later this month when both comets will be substantially
brighter and much closer to Mercury and the sun.

ISON was discovered in September 2012 by amateur Russian astronomers,
who observed with a 16-inch telescope that is part of the
International Scientific Optical Network (ISON), after which the
comet was named. On Nov. 28, ISON will fly within 700,000 miles (1.2
million kilometers) of the sun's photosphere, at which time it is
expected either to flare brilliantly or disintegrate.

As part of an ISON observation campaign involving ground- and
space-based NASA observatories, as well as many other observatories
around the world, MESSENGER has been poised for several weeks to
collect observations of ISON. From Nov. 9 through Nov. 11, the
probe's Mercury Dual Instrument System (MDIS) captured its first
images of the comet.

We are thrilled to see that we've detected ISON, said Ron Vervack
of the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, who is
leading MESSENGER's role in the ISON observation campaign. The comet
hasn't brightened as quickly as originally predicted, so we wondered
how well we would do. Seeing it this early bodes well for our later
observations.

A few days earlier, from Nov. 6 through Nov. 8, MESSENGER's imagers
picked up its first snapshots of Encke. Unlike ISON, Encke has been
known for quite a while. It was discovered in 1786 and recognized as
a periodic comet in 1819. Its orbital period is 3.3 years -- the
shortest period of any known comet -- and Nov. 21 will mark its 62nd
recorded perihelion.

Encke has been on our radar for a long time because we've realized
that it would be crossing MESSENGER's path in mid-November of this
year, Vervack explained. And not only crossing it, but coming very
close to Mercury. The early images of both comets are little more
than a few pixels across, Vervack said, but he expects improved
images next week when the comets make their closest approaches to
MESSENGER and Mercury.

On Nov. 18, just a few days shy of its perihelion on Nov. 21, Encke
will travel within 2.3 million miles (3.7 million kilometers) of
Mercury. According to the Minor Planet Center, if Encke came this
close to Earth, it would rank as the third-closest known approach of
a comet to our planet. On Nov. 19, ISON will pass within 22.5 million
miles (36.2 million kilometers) of Mercury while at a distance of 44
million (71 million kilometers) from the sun.

By next week, we expect Encke to brighten by approximately a factor
of 200 as seen from Mercury, and ISON by a factor of 15 or more,
Vervack said. So we have high hopes for better images and data.
Three of MESSENGER's instruments -- MDIS, the Mercury Atmospheric and
Surface Composition Spectrometer, and the X-Ray Spectrometer -- will
be trained on the two comets and will collect as many observations as
payload operational constraints will allow.

There are complicating issues that could impact the volume of data
the team gathers, Vervack explained.

Closest approach occurs during what we call a 'hot season,' he
said. So, for the health of the spacecraft, portions of each orbit
must be spent in a thermally safe mode, which precludes gathering
data over the entire orbit.

The critical observations also happen during a low-downlink period
for MESSENGER.

We can't fill up the spacecraft recorder with comet data because
doing so could cause a backlog that impacts our primary mission of
collecting observations from Mercury, he said.

But the team is optimistic that all will go as planned, he said. We
just need the comets to hold up their end of the bargain.

Sorry for your view on this Elizabeth but they are in fact not excuses. I have
no need to try and post several times to this forum, I'm just not that type of
person and that's not how I work.

In fact, I have asked other list members to post for me and they too could not.
(First thought, why not use a different format) and the answer to that is I
have. I am using an ipad this time and had the same issue on the smartphone.

I appreciate you watchdogging the list, but I would wait until a pattern was
formed before making public comments.

Re: [meteorite-list] Questionable Tektites??? from Patagonia-Falsetektites?

2013-11-14 Thread drtanuki
Sean and List,
If it were obsidian as I first considered the conical shape is a problem for
me.  Conical-shaped of this character are so uncommon that a single specimen
would be considered very rare, but the guy has three.  Also note that he has
conical corals offered also from Patagonia.  I have several thousands of
tektites and have handled 10s of thousands so I think that I can be a fair
judge on this.  The surface features are very atypical for glasses.  Maybe we
might hear from our long-time friend Norman Lehrman, and expert, on this?
Norman?  Thanks Sean.  Dirk Ross...Tokyo

That second specimen shows a very milky/grey color - it could also be
obsidian.  It would be interesting to see a pic with light showing through
the edges of the other two.

List,

While searching the impactites on the earlier matter I ran across some
so-called Patagonia tektitesthat appear to me to be silicified fossil
sponges or some other fossil sea critter.  Does anyone on this list have any
information concerning these?
The shape and one that is chipped indicate to me that we have an agatized
coral being offered as tektites. Buyer use caution!

[meteorite-list] PRIMM CASTS FOR SALE- AD

2013-11-14 Thread Paul Gessler

To those of you who may be interested I recently remade a cast of my PRIMM
stone for a fellow on the list who
is putting together one of the largest collections of meteorite casts that I
know of.
In the process I have 3 additional casts available for sale. That will be it
for this mold as she can do no more.
The detail on these is exceptional and the finished painting and tinting is
Incredibly realistic.
The Primm stone is a wonderful example of what the dry lake beds of the
southwest USED to offer.
The original stone exhibits deep regmaglypts, fusion crust, contraction
cracks and typical weathering colour seen on most
of the meteorites found on dry lakes. Fantastic for the display case or as a
fieldwork identification stone.
It takes me a week to produce these and the mold about a month. Lots of
painstaking work is spent on these.

I have 3 left and they are priced at a very reasonable US $70 plus shipping
from CANADA
$10 regular no tracking air post or $17 with Tracking

Payment can be made with paypal

Thank you for consideration and if anyone finds the missing piece PLEASE let
me know. There is a reward!

You can read all about the back story on this meteorite on the following

[meteorite-list] Meteorite Fall in Bangladesh?

2013-11-14 Thread Ron Baalke

Meteorite fall creates panic in Garo Hills
Biplab Kr Dey
The Assam Tribune
November 14, 2013

TURA - A meteorite falling in the areas bordering Bangladesh created panic
among the residents of the Garo Hills region. The meteorite, which fell
inside Bangladesh, lit up the night sky around 10.30 pm last night. It
was eagerly watched by the residents living along these areas.

The meteorite fell close to the Dumnikura BoP in the Sherpur district
of Bangladesh, just beside the international border and the impact was
heard even 40 km away from the area where it fell. Dumnikura is a border
outpost in the South Garo Hills, very close to where five police personnel
were killed last week.

A resident of the neighbouring Dalu village in West Garo Hills, Dipu Marak,
was witness to the incident.

He said, We heard a loud noise around 10.30 pm last night and immediately
rushed outside. We were in a state of shock. The meteorite lit up the
night sky and narrowly missed us.

Other local residents said the whole area shook under the impact of the
fall and the light could be seen even on the Indian side of the border.

Panic-stricken people, who ran out of their houses, said that the sound
resembled that of an aeroplane's at a close range.

[meteorite-list] Potentially Dazzling Comet ISON Now Visible to Naked Eye After Outburst

Potentially Dazzling Comet ISON Now Visible to Naked Eye After Outburst
by Joe Rao
space.com
November 14, 2013

Get ready for a stellar show. The much-anticipated Comet ISON is now visible
to the naked eye according to reports from many observers.

Comet ISON - the potential comet of the century - has suddenly brightened
in an outburst of activity with just two weeks to go before it literally
grazes the surface of the sun,

In recent months, Comet ISON has repeatedly befuddled forecasters trying
to anticipate just how bright it will ultimately become. But earlier this
week, the comet's brightening trend again seemed to sputtering and stalling,
but more recent observations suggest a sudden and radical upsurge in brightness.

Comet ISON lightens up, literally

Comet ISON is now in full outburst mode, becoming many times brighter
over just the past few days. Astronomers measure the brightness of objects
in the night sky as magnitude, in which the brighter an object is, the
lower its magnitude number. The human eye can perceive objects as faint
as magnitude +6.5.

According to veteran comet observer, John Bortle, Comet ISON was shining
only at magnitude +8.5 on Monday (Nov. 11) morning - more than six times
too dim to be visible to the unaided eye. But by Wednesday morning, the
comet's brightness had increased three-fold brightening to +7.3.

If that was a surprise, an even bigger one was waiting for Bortle on Thursday
morning (Nov. 14).

Ready to go at 4:45 a.m. but I couldn't figure out what the funny-looking,
blotted, star that came into view was, Bortle said. [Was my] seeing
that bad? But, no, the 'blotted star' was, in fact, at the comet's position!
Getting to the point, the little but intensely condensed, globular
cluster-looking
comet was a whopping magnitude 5.4 - two full magnitudes brighter than
just 24 hours ago! This makes for a three magnitude total rise since my
observation on Monday.

In just 72 hours, Comet ISON increased nearly 16 times in brightness.

Carl Hergenrother, acting co-coordinator of the comet section of the
Association
of Lunar and Planetary Observers, has confirmed Bortle's observations.

ISON has dramatically brightened over the past few days, Hergenrother
told SPACE.com via email. The latest observations put the comet around
magnitude 5.7 to 6.1 which is a 2+ magnitude increase from this weekend.
My own observations from this morning in 10x50 and 30x125 binoculars show
a nice 'lollipop' comet with a very condensed blue-green head and a long
narrow tail. The tail was over 1 degree in length even in the 10x50s.
The comet may continue to brighten as the outburst is still in its early
stages.

Long Island amateur Dennis Wilde was also impressed by ISON's appearance
in the predawn sky Thursday morning.

ISON, while not as large as the full moon, was an impressive sight in
the eyepiece, Wilde said. The coma was compact with a very bright apparent
nucleus, very bright green in color. The tail was very thin and bright
near the coma and widened slightly as it extended out to almost 3.5 degrees
as seen in the 15. It wasn't huge or extraordinarily bright but it was
a great view nonetheless. I viewed the coma at up to 490x and it was uniformly
dense and bright. There was no indication of the start of any breakup.
After finding it with the telescope it was quite easy to pick out the
coma with the [binoculars].

This outburst is not completely unusual since ISON has demonstrated short
spurts of brightening over the past few weeks, but they were quickly
followed by abrupt slow-down in its brightening trend.

So will the current outburst persist until the comet arrives at the sun
on Thanksgiving Day (Nov. 28)?

Whether by chance we have caught the comet at the peak of the outburst
is certainly debatable (to me rather improbable) and it may well still
brighten further, Bortle said.

The comet may continue to brighten as the outburst is still in its early
stages, Hergenrother said. Whether this outburst will be a short-lived
event or the beginning of a more active phase is still to be seen.

This sudden upsurge in brightness is certainly very good for a comet that
until now seemed to be running well behind in brightness predictions.
It seems now that we can feel a little more optimistic about this enigmatic
object putting on show for us later this month on into early December.

Comet ISON was first discovered by Russian amateur astronomers Vitali
Nevski and Artyom Novichonok in September 2012. The comet is officially
designated C/2012 S1 (ISON), with ISON standing for International Scientific
Optical Network.

The comet is rapidly approaching its Nov. 28 perihelion and as a result
it is becoming more and more difficult to observe low near the east-southeast
horizon in the dawn sky. Still, observers with access to a clear horizon
may be able to follow ISON for about
