Re: [meteorite-list] Many Lunars added to Tucson Meteorite Auction

2014-01-27 Thread Michael Blood
Hi All,

2 days ago a private collector submitted 26 lots including many
whole stones including the following categories:

Lunars (Several are half stones {world class specimens} - also some
smaller slices)
Howardite
Eucrite
Rumerutite (oriented)
C3 Ungrouped
CV3
Redrock
Bensour
El Hammami
Oum Dreyga
D'Orbigny
Etc.

This pretty much filled up the auction and any additional entries
Will be the day of - and there are always a bunch or those.

I have arranged the on-line catalog in its final lot order and this
new collection is in lots 40 through 65 (if you have been following along).
Nearly all of the lots in this group have minimums but they are
Modest to stupid low opening bids.

THIS IS THE LAST WEEK TO SUBMIT ABSENTEE BIDS
Please include full lot # (ie Lot 9 KR 1 not just Lot 9 . Please
Put METEORITE AUCTION ABSENTEE BIDS in the subject
Box of your email and expect a confirmation from me within 24hrs.
If you do not get one please email again, as I ALWAYS confirm absentee
Bids.

Whether bidding or not, this is a chance to see some spectacular
Specimens (yes, there are 12 lots of UFO material - but if that ain't
Your thing, get a grip).

Twink will be bringing both a Gold Basin and a NWA 869 cakes.

There will be plenty of affordable specimens for everyone, but this
Auction will unquestionably have the most spectacular specimens ever.

Best wishes - and see you in Tucson!
Michael

[meteorite-list] Ad: Ebay Steal Alert - North American Meteorite

2014-01-27 Thread Robert Verish

For those collectors with an interest in North American meteorites,
I would like to bring your attention to some eBay offerings (ending soon):

Norton County (AUB) - fall - Fusion-crusted Impact-melt BRECCIA

http://tinyurl.com/NortonCo
Preview:
http://www.ebay.com/sch/bolide*chaser/m.html?item=221358568338rt=nc_trksid=p2047675.l2562

These specimens came directly out of the University of New Mexico - Institute
of Meteoritics.

If Carl Agee hadn't personally handed these stones to me, I would have just
tossed these

scoriaceous rocks into my slag meteor-wrong collection! (A real eye-opener -
lesson-learned;-)

Just viewing the images of the light-colored fusion-crust will be well worth
your time.

Enjoy,
Bob V.

Re: [meteorite-list] How is Tucson Going??

2014-01-27 Thread MexicoDoug

Great weather Larry, thanks Jim,

While everyone is holding their breath for the mountains of black stone
to rise, from wiktionary.com:

The name Tucson comes from the O'odham name for the city, Chuk Shon,
meaning Spring at the base of the black mountain.

Hope everyone gets a little piece of the black mountain who goes.

Part of the evolution of the name was due to Spanish military
settlement which Hispanicized Chuk Shon into Tucson; however unlike
common TWO-san pronunciations of today, the Spanish pronounced it
Tuc-SON with the accent on the second syllable. In my conversation
with several Mexican academic types, they have pronounced it as
Tuck-SON, but I really couldn't say if it is really how the original
presidio was pronounced, or if it is just an artifact of modern
difficulty of a native Mexican dealing with the CS combination which
doesn't fit Castilian or Andalucian and their derivatives very well.

From the stuff you never wanted to know department, but I hope better
than posting a “test” message with a “no-reply”

Kindest wishes
Doug

Hi Jim:

From a local, I am looking forward to seeing old friends and other

who I do not see very often. By Saturday February 1, it will have cooled
down to a high of 71 (it may hit 80 at the end of the month) and there

a small chance of rain (should we blame those Colorado folks who will be
arriving around then?).

Also, if you have a car and free time, on Saturday February 8, at Pima
Community College East Campus (near Davis Monthan Air Force Base) there
will be an all-day astronomy expo and evening observing (if it is clear)
hosted by Astronomy Magazine. I will be there (for Girl Scouts,
Planetary

Astronomy Association and people from OSIRIS-REx will be there, too.

Hi List!

I have not heard much about Tucson this year. Not much in the way of

Some people need to lighten up.  The Blood auction is supposed to be fun.  What
better place than Tucson to offer these extraterrestrial marvels?

UFOology is hot right now with over a dozen series devoted to the subject on
the cable TV channels.  Viewers cannot get enough of it. UFO material from the
50's and 60's is among the top performing  items in the collectables sector
right now.  A decade ago, it was dinosaurs.

It doesn't matter if you believe in it or not; Some of this material has proven
to be an excellent investment.

Take this sketch of a flying saucer being offered up on eBay for instance:

RARE RAY HARRYHAUSEN EARTH VS THE FLYING SAUCERS UFO SKETCH SIGNED ART
AUTOGRAPH http://r.ebay.com/qwUlkI

A mere $21,000.0 and it could be yours. It looks like there have been 5 offers
on it.  I think the witness sketch in the Blood auction is way more exciting
and there is no minimum bid.

Then there is Lot 37 which attracted the attention of the scientific community.
It is made of 100% pure Enstatite aligned in sharp microscopic shards which
could not occur naturally.   It even looks oriented.  It is informally referred
to as the Puckerite for obvious reasons.  It doesn't get more alien looking
than this!

You can cut and paste this link into  a browser if you want to know more about
Enstatite

Do not forget there is a specimen labeled as the Tucson meteorite in this
collection of artifacts!

Tucson, with all of it wackiness and oddities, is the perfect place for this
kind offering.

One finds those odd black lumps in the desert with some regularity
(lot 37). I always assumed they were heavily weathered globs of tar
from telephone poles, baked into odd shapes by the sun. Typically not
quite as hard as rock when pressure is applied, chip conchoidally
revealing a glassy black texture. Low density. Higher concentration
closer to roads...

Nice piece of chalcedony (lot 34) being offered as a UFO token as
well. Won't say the stuff isn't cool or something like that, but with
a close examination, I don't know how may of these things are U or

offers on it. I think the witness sketch in the Blood auction is way
more exciting and there is no minimum bid.

Then there is Lot 37 which attracted the attention of the scientific
community. It is made of 100% pure Enstatite aligned in sharp
microscopic shards which could not occur naturally. It even looks
oriented. It is informally referred to as the Puckerite for obvious
reasons. It doesn't get more alien looking than this!

You can cut and paste this link into a browser if you want to know more
about Enstatite

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enstatite

Do not forget there is a specimen labeled as the Tucson meteorite in this
collection of artifacts!

Tucson, with all of it wackiness and oddities, is the perfect place for
this kind offering.

Actually, there is no such thing as CV3-ung. If it's CV, it's
grouped. The MetBull lists this as CV3-anomalous, and from the two
abstracts I can find on it, I'm not entirely convinced it's anomalous,
but maybe. It's at the high end of the CV oxygen isotope trend and
closely resembles Leoville.

Re: [meteorite-list] LINK

2014-01-27 Thread Werner Schroer

Hi list,
I'm sure Michael will be grateful for any advice we can give him in regard
to his auction. As Adam wrote, it's supposed to be fun and UFO collectibles
are part of it.

Nobody has to bid on them, so I don't know what the fuss is all about.

Anne is correct, unlike stamps printing errors are not desired by book
collectors. I guess Michael's book - which I've bought - hasn't turned out
to be a bestseller so he tries to add some rarity to them. It's called
'Marketing' and it can backfire if it's not done correctly. But again,
nobody has to bid on them if they don't like the book.

I wish someone might be willing and able to establish a video link of the
auction to the rest of the world.

Cheers
Werner Schroer

[meteorite-list] NWA 8173 - A rare Enstatite Achondrite

2014-01-27 Thread Gary Fujihara
Aloha meteorite lovers,

The Big Kahuna has acquired an interesting new achondrite, NWA 8173. A single
fusion crusted 67.17g stone was purchased from a Moroccan dealer in autumn
2013. The meteorite was cut by Montana Meteorite Laboratory and a sample
submitted to Tony Irving for analysis toward classification. This is a very
unusual specimen composed mainly of stubby, prismatic grains of untwinned, pure
enstatite (Fs0.0±0.0Wo0.2-0.3) with ~20 vol.% stained, holly-leaf shaped grains
of Si-bearing Fe-Ni metal, and accessory alabandite, daubreelite, alkali
feldspar, silica polymorph and minor secondary calcite. This specimen is not an
aubrite, and the purity of the enstatite is remarkable (even among other known
enstatite-rich meteorites). There are only five enstatite achondrite meteorites
classified and listed in the Meteorite Bulletin, and this is one of the
freshest examples. Slices of this meteorite have a mirror polish and come in a
quality labeled large display box for protection and years of viewing pleasure.
Scale cube is 1cm on each side and not included in the sale.
