[meteorite-list] Chelyabinsk Meteorite Falling in Dark Flight

2014-04-04 Thread J Sinclair
Hi List,

On March 24, Martin Goff posted on FB a link to a video that shows
some different footage of the Chelyabinsk event. It's entirely in
Russian and over 12 minutes long but it's worth a look.

I noticed at minute 10:30 of the video there is a clip of a
meteor(ite) falling in dark flight.
It's only about 3 seconds of video but there appears to be a black
rock tumbling straight down from the sky.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YgZuqm7893A

Chelyabinsk continues to amaze.

If this were so, it would be quite an irresponsible action, just as if
 someone
dropped a big stone from a cliff or a skyscraper, not caring for any
 potentially
valuable things or even living persons on the ground. I hope this was not so,
 and
I still believe that this was nothing but a cleverly arranged April?s fool
 joke,
which indeed seems to irritate a lot of persons here and elsewhere. Time will
 tell,
 as probably

Re: [meteorite-list] Chelyabinsk Meteorite Falling in Dark Flight

Dear list members,

the moving dark spot in the footage does definitely not show the falling
meteorite because the direction does not
fit to the location of the impact hole in the ice of the lake. It's probably a
bird.

Graham, I've analysed the footage and could not see the mass fall.

[meteorite-list] Gaggle of Potential Dwarf Planets Found by Dark Energy Camera

2014-04-04 Thread Ron Baalke

http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn25351-gaggle-of-dwarf-planets-found-by-dark-energy-camera.html

Gaggle of dwarf planets found by dark energy camera
by Aviva Rutkin
New Scientist
02 April 2014

Our solar system just got a little more crowded, thanks to discoveries
from a huge digital camera designed to study dark energy.

Last week astronomers reported the discovery of 2012 VP113 - nicknamed
Joe Biden after the vice president, or VP, of the US. This potential
dwarf planet was spotted on the outer fringes of the solar system, in
a region called the inner Oort cloud. Days later, the same team reported
two more potential dwarfs, known as 2013 FY27 and 2013 FZ27.

Both of these objects are in the Kuiper belt, a grouping of relatively
small bodies beyond the orbit of Neptune that is also home to Pluto and
three other known dwarf planets. Astronomers suspect the Kuiper belt is
littered with dwarfs, but many either reflect too little light or are
too distant to have been visible in previous sky surveys.

FZ27 sits 50 astronomical units away from the sun, on the far edge of
the Kuiper belt (1 AU is Earth's distance from the sun). At about 600
kilometres wide, the object is probably massive enough for it to have
become nearly round under its own gravity - one of the criteria for being
classified as a dwarf planet. The other recently discovered object, FY27,
is probably about 1000 kilometres across and was found roughly 80 AU from
the sun.

Dark eye

The fresh haul of discoveries is no coincidence. All three objects were
found in images from the Dark Energy Camera on the Blanco telescope in
Chile, which took its first images in 2012. Boasting 570 megapixels, this
camera was designed to collect the faint light from millions of very distant
galaxies in the hunt for clues to the nature of dark energy, the mysterious
force that is causing the universe to expand at an accelerating rate.

In the process, the camera collects hundreds of gigabytes of data, which
astronomers can sift through to find far-flung bodies in our solar system
that until now have been invisible.

That's why we're finding a lot of these objects, even though they're
faint, says co-discoverer Scott Sheppard at the Carnegie Institution
for Science in Washington DC. We expect to have many more finds in the
future.

[meteorite-list] LADEE Satellite to Continue Gathering Data Up to Planned Lunar Impact

2014-04-04 Thread Ron Baalke

April 3, 2014

NASA Satellite to Continue Gathering Data Up to Planned Lunar Impact

NASA's Lunar Atmosphere and Dust Environment Explorer (LADEE) spacecraft is
gradually lowering its orbital altitude to continue making science
observations prior to its planned impact on the moon's surface on or before
April 21.

Ground controllers at NASA's Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, Calif.,
are maneuvering the spacecraft to fly approximately 1 to 2 miles (2 to 3
kilometers) above the lunar surface to gather science measurements at the
lowest altitude possible.

A final maneuver will ensure LADEE's trajectory will impact the far side of
the moon, which is not in view of Earth or near any previous lunar mission
landings. Ground controllers have little room for error with LADEE's
navigation system, and at these low orbital altitudes, a small error could
mean the difference between continuing to orbit above the lunar surface and
impacting it. Because of this, the team does not intend to target a specific
impact location on the moon's surface.

The moon's gravity field is so lumpy, and the terrain is so highly variable
with crater ridges and valleys that frequent maneuvers are required or the
LADEE spacecraft will impact the moon's surface, said Butler Hine, LADEE
project manager at Ames. Even if we perform all maneuvers perfectly, there's
still a chance LADEE could impact the moon sometime before April 21, which is
when we expect LADEE's orbit to naturally decay after using all the fuel
onboard.

Until mid-April, ground controllers will continue to fire the LADEE altitude
control thrusters once a week to keep the observatory in its target orbit. On
April 11, LADEE will perform its final orbital maintenance maneuver before
the total lunar eclipse on April 15, when Earth's shadow passes over the
Moon. This eclipse, which will last approximately four hours, exposes the
spacecraft to conditions at the limits of what it was designed to withstand.

If LADEE survives the eclipse, we will have nearly a week of additional
science at low altitudes before impact, said Rick Elphic, LADEE project
scientist at Ames. For a short mission like LADEE, even a few days count for
a lot - this is a very exciting time in the mission.

After the eclipse, ground controllers will determine how well the spacecraft
is functioning. If it is healthy, LADEE will continue to acquire and transmit
science data, as longs as its altitude and contact with ground controllers
allow.

We're very eager to see how LADEE handles the prolonged exposure to the
intense cold of this eclipse, and we've used flight data to predict that most
of the spacecraft should be fine, said Hine. However, the eclipse will
really put the spacecraft design through an extreme test, especially the
propulsion system.

Launched in September 2013, from NASA's Wallops Flight Facility on Wallops
Island, Va., the vending-machine size spacecraft has been orbiting the moon
since Oct. 6. On Nov. 10, LADEE began gathering science data, and on Nov. 20,
the spacecraft entered its science orbit around the moon's equator. LADEE has
been in extended mission operations following a highly successful 100-day
primary science phase.

Because the LADEE team has flawlessly performed every maintenance maneuver,
they've been able to keep the spacecraft flying in its proper orbit and have
enabled this amazing mission extension and science to continue up until the
very end, said Joan Salute, LADEE program executive at NASA Headquarters in
Washington.

LADEE's three science payload instruments have been working to unravel the
mysteries of the moon's atmosphere, acquiring more than 700,000 measurements.
In its previous orbit, LADEE's closest approach to the lunar surface was
between 12.5 and 31 miles (20 and 50 kilometers), and its farthest was
between 47 and 93 miles (75 and 150 kilometers) - a unique position that
allows the spacecraft to frequently pass from lunar day to lunar night every
two hours. This vantage provides data on the full range of changes and
processes occurring within the moon's tenuous atmosphere.

Scientists hope this data will help answer a long-standing question: Was
lunar dust, electrically charged by sunlight, responsible for the pre-sunrise
glow detected during several Apollo missions above the lunar horizon? LADEE
also is gathering detailed information about the structure and composition of
the thin lunar atmosphere. A thorough understanding of these characteristics
of our nearest celestial neighbor will help researchers understand other
bodies in the solar system, such as large asteroids, Mercury, and the moons
of outer planets.

NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington funds the LADEE mission.
Ames manages the overall mission and serves as a base for mission operations
and real-time control of the probe. NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in

[meteorite-list] B612 Press Conference on Protecting Earth from Asteroid Impacts

2014-04-04 Thread Ron Baalke

http://spaceref.com/news/viewpr.html?pid=42977

B612 Press Conference on Protecting Earth from Asteroid Impacts
B612 Foundation Press Release
April 4, 2014

The B612 Foundation will hold a press conference at the Seattle Museum
of Flight to release new video of data from a nuclear-test-ban-treaty
organization showing multiple atomic-bomb-scale asteroid impacts on Earth
since 2001.

Date: Tuesday, April 22 (Earth Day 2014)
Time: 11:30 am PDT / 2:30 pm EDT / 18:30 UTC
Location: Museum of Flight, 9404 East Marginal Way S., Seattle, WA 98108
Live Stream: http://www.b612foundation.org

Speakers:
* US Shuttle, ISS, and Soyuz Astronaut Dr. Ed Lu, Co-founder CEO, B612
Foundation
* US Shuttle Astronaut Tom Jones, President, Association of Space Explorers
* Apollo 8 Astronaut Bill Anders
* Hosted by Doug King, President, Seattle Museum of Flight

In a special Earth Day program on April 22, Seattle's Museum of Flight
will host three prominent US astronauts supporting the B612 Foundation
for a press conference to unveil a new video showing the surprising number
of asteroid impacts on Earth during the last decade, and the even more
surprising fact that we can prevent future asteroid impacts.

The visualization shows data from the nuclear weapons test warning network,
supplied by Peter Brown, Western University of Canada. This network has
detected 26 multi-kiloton explosions since 2001, all of which are due
to asteroid impacts, explained Dr. Lu, CEO, B612 Foundation. It shows
that asteroid impacts are NOT rare -- but actually 3-10 times more common
than we previously thought. The fact that none of these asteroid impacts
shown in the video was detected in advance, is proof that the only thing
preventing a catastrophe from a 'city-killer' sized asteroid is blind
luck. The goal of the B612 Sentinel mission is to find and track asteroids
decades before they hit Earth, allowing us to easily deflect them.

The B612 Foundation is partnered with Ball Aerospace to build the Sentinel
Infrared Space Telescope Mission. From a Venus-like orbit around the Sun,
Sentinel will be the most capable system for finding and tracking asteroids
ever built.

During the press conference, Apollo 8 astronaut Bill Anders will unveil
a new mural that highlights the importance of the Sentinel mission. His
Earthrise photo shows the Earth rising above the crater-strewn surface
of the Moon, and will remain on display at the Seattle Museum of Flight.
We began Apollo 8 thinking we were going to learn about the Moon, instead,
we began a new understanding of our Earth. The Earthrise photo will serve
as the backdrop for the morning press conference.

Tom Jones, four-time US shuttle astronaut and President of the Association
of Space Explorers, will explain the recent UN resolution calling for
international cooperation for detection of dangerous asteroids.

The press conference is open to all accredited media. Astronauts Ed Lu,
Tom Jones, and Bill Anders will also be available for 1-1 interviews and
additional photos immediately before and following the press conference.
Please schedule with Diane Murphy (di...@b612foundation.org)

The video showing the new findings of asteroid impacts will be posted
at http://www.b612foundation.org immediately following the press conference.

Astronaut Speakers:
Edward Lu -- US NASA astronaut who flew three space missions including
a stint of six months on the International Space Station, currently serves
as CEO, B612 Foundation. He previously led the Advanced Projects group
at Google, where his teams developed imaging technology for Google Earth/Maps,
Google Street View, and energy information products including Google
PowerMeter.
He is the co-inventor of the Gravity Tractor, a spacecraft able to controllably
alter the orbit of an asteroid. He has published scientific articles on
high-energy astrophysics, solar physics, plasma physics, cosmology, and
statistical physics.

Thomas Jones -- US NASA astronaut who flew four space shuttle missions,
currently serves as senior research scientist at the Florida Institute
