[meteorite-list] Ad: Incredible Oriented Specimens (Ad 5/12)

2016-08-31 Thread Bigjohn Shea via Meteorite-list
Meteorite Enthusiasts!

Hope you are all having a great week thus far.

I have some exceptional oriented specimens for sale with some truly beautiful and unique features.

Please contact me for photos.

1g Oriented Chelyabinsk – This little specimen is like a tiny octopod of fresh fusion crust with the flowlines dripping off the back of it like tentacles.  It’s a true beauty and you’ll probably never find another quite like it.

19.4g Oriented NWA X – Probable OC with orientation on both the front and the back.  The back side has a very distinct lip around it, but more impressively has an array of radiating flowlines on the surface between the lipping.  The edges carry additional flowlines scattered about, and the specimen as a whole is nearly 100% intact.

99.6g Regmaglypted NWA X – Probable OC that is a larger fragment of what would have been an incredible oriented beauty.  The front surface is whole, smooth, curved and pitted with scattered regmaglypts making the light dance off its surface.  The posterior reveals the history of it having fragmented from a larger mass.

Always open to offers, and often open to trades.  Happy to ship domestic or international.  Contact me for a quote.

Have a great evening!

Cheers,
John A. Shea, MD

Hi Bill -- you must have missed it in the article: 6th paragraph: "At 92%
iron, 7% nickel, and a 1% mix of sulfur,
carbon and other elements, the Lilienthal's meteorite was part of an asteroid,
formed 4.5 billion years ago
at the dawn of the solar system, essentially a leftover from the same material
comprising the sun and the planets."
So it's an iron. --Rob

Pleasant article. Very little hype of the sort we are often inundated with. The
only thing that I found disappointing was the lack of information pertaining to
the rock/meteorite itself.

Kinda looks like a pallasite but that's just a silly guess, I guess ; since
it's only based on a glance. Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Bill

How Many Meteorites Are Hidden on Farmland?
www.agweb.com
In early May, with corn already up, Bruce Lilienthal spotted a large rock
jutting halfway out of his heavy, black dirt. He dug out a 16” long, 10” wide
and 2” thick specimen weighing an unseemly 33 lbs. Unknown to Lilienthal, he’d
harvested the single most unique item in his farm’s history: a meteorite.

Along the same thought process Tommy,

I have often wondered just how much mass worth of extraterrestrial matter there has been added to the Earth's overall mass?  Add up all those meteorites under the top soil of farms, all the meteorites from the Ordovician bombardment of L-chondrites, etc. etc.  Add up every meteorite we know of already, and every meteorite we do not know of already, and just how much of the Earth's current mass can be attributed to extraterrestrial matter?

In my mind it is an intriguing question.  Our orbit around the sun is perfectly located to support life, and if the mass of the Earth were different enough to have landed us in a different orbit for one reason or another, we might not have an environment suitable to support life.

Hope you are all doing good.

Cheers,
