Re: [meteorite-list] ALTERNATIVE dealing with eBay Fraud! JASON, be carefull what you say about my meteorites on the Meteorite List, I am warning you...
Hi all: I'm must plead somewhat guilty in that I sometimes purchase small meteorites (usually micro-bits) from certain sellers listing items on EBay, usually because those particular sellers can supply what I want at a relatively, for me, good price (despite the increasing shipping costs). I'm also guilty, as, from time to time, again when funds are available, I purchase small specimens directly from certain dealers who do not list on EBay, and even from a couple of dealers who aren't on this list! For the most part, my experiences have been satisfactory. I did see an ad on Ebay initially offering pieces of the new Russian fall, from a source listed as being in Las Vegas, Nevada. As these specimens were being offered within minutes of the meteorites hitting the ice/snow, I reasoned that these specimens were indeed fraudulent! And I offered the seller my opinion on his items in my very best diplomatic language. I, for now, will wait until one of the dealers I know has some of this fall in stock, at a price I can afford, whether from a dealer's listing on EBay, or from a dealer's web store. Chris. Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorites that are never classified
The Rockhaven fall appears to be a Buzzard Coulee. Although some intrusive tests were not performed on one of the available stones, by appearance and Blaine Reeds X-Ray(?) the stone is apparently indistinguishable from a Buzzard Coulee. So is, as Mike Farmer indicated, a scam, until proven otherwise. Montney (BC, Canada) has a tentative H6? classification. The owner has, to my knowledge, kept the entire stone and any small fragments and nothing has been officially archived in an institution. This also is the case of some newer Canadian finds (mostly irons). The finder has kept the meteorite and nothing has been officially set aside into a research institution for research etc. One older iron find (1972) from Quebec, has been classified, and is held in a museum in Montreal, but nothing on this meteorite has officially been submitted to the MetBul for publication. I myself have a small bit off a Canadian H4/5? chondrite (found 1996) meteorite from Saskatchewan, which has yet, to my knowledge, to be officially submitted for publication. Chris. Re: [meteorite-list] Man Claims Rockhaven Meteorite Find
The law applies to old Canadian falls and finds as well as newly discovered stuff. So, if I buy an old Dresden (Ontario) H6 (fell 1939) from a US dealer and bring it back into Canada, and then want to resell or trade it to a dealer outside Canada, I will have to apply for a permit from Canada Customs. Lot of paperwork in any case. Waits for clearance can be upwards of several months. The law went into effect in 1977, and also applies to fossils and other perceived cultural items. So even though I'm selling/trading off some of my collection, I'm keeping the Canadian stuff. Chris. Re: [meteorite-list] Man Claims Rockhaven Meteorite Find
I've been questioned on my last post. My self and a fellow collector (also a Canadian) queried about re-exporting a repatriated Canadian meteorite and received this from Richard Herd curator of the National Meteorite Collection in Ottawa. Once Canadian meteorites are repatriated, they become as they always were: cultural property (any mass even a nanogram) and subject to the Cultural Property Export and Import Act (1977); they need a permit to be re-exported regardless of their provenance/collection history. There has been debate about the so-called 35-year rule. Chris. Re: [meteorite-list] Lost 2005 Hammer Fall - Montney - Will it ever be an offical recongized fall?
Hi Mike: Probably not. The main mass remains in private hands, and the Geological Survey of Canada Research section which deals with meteorites has done little work on it. A tentative classification of H6? was given soon after the fall. Other than that, nothing has been done. There are 14 other unrecognized meteorites, (all are finds), from Canada that have yet to be officially published. Many of the main masses of these finds remain in private hands, thus are not readily available for research. Many have been unofficially classified by researchers with nothing published. Some, like the 1972 iron find from Quebec (Chibougamau) have been classified (in this case an IAB) but again not officially published, although the main mass of this particular find rests in a Montreal Museum. I have no idea why it hasn't been published after all these years. Could be done easily if an interested researcher takes the time. The museum may be interested in doing this themselves given the right prod. The Lone Island Lake IAB 2005 find from Manitoba was scientifically classified but for some reason not submitted to the MetBul by the classifier. Well weathered fragments of this iron were legally exported to a dealer in the US, as institutes in Canada showed little interest in acquiring any. The same goes for the main mass of the Pinawa (Manitoba) IAB 2004 find. Officially classified but not published in the MetBul but available for sale with a proper export permit already available. Big bucks for askin price but ready for cutting and distribution. On other hand the 2009 H4 Redwater Alberta a well weathered find (TKW 230 grams), was quickly submitted to a research facility in Alberta, classified, and published in the MetBul #98. The main mass remains with the finder, the research facilty has a TS and the classification specimen. I have about 0.5 grams in my private collection. So not readily available to collectors. The 2009 Grimsby H5 fall was quickly classified and published in the MetBul #97. Being a well observed fall over a populated area generated a great deal of scientific interest. Usually falls that drop a number of specimens are quickly studied. The Montney chondrite fall , despite being a hammer, landed in a rather remote farming area of British Columbia. The small main mass and fragments (TKW 0.15 kg) didn't attract much attention from researchers and meteorite hunters. More may be found, but as the local area weather in winter can be dreadful, any additional specimens recovered may be very well weathered. So don't expect any new meteorites from Canada to show up in the MetBul any time soon. If you need more info send a PM. Chris. [meteorite-list] Dresden (Ontario) fall date
Hi Listers: The Catalog of Meteorites lists the fall date of the Dresden (Ontario) Canada H6 fall as occurring on June 11, 1939. Yet the following give a date of July 11, 1939 with a recovery date of July 12, 1939. http://www.rasc.ca/journal/pdfs/2006-04-lr.pdf http://www.rasc.ca/journal/pdfs/2006-06-lr.pdf and: Canadian Meteorites by Richard White (1984), as published by The Provincial Museum of Alberta, pages 19 and 20. Also: Colgrove, W.G., 1939, The Dresden Meteorite. JRASC, 33, 301-33. Newspapers: Globe Mail, July 12, 1939. The Chatham News, July 12, 1939. http://www.wallaceburgcourierpress.com/ArticleDisplay.aspx?archive=truee=2397194 So which date is reliable?
