[meteorite-list] Munich show book (Meteorites) report
Hello Fred, thank you very much for your enthusiastic report about our Munich Show book. Since I have written seven articles (about 50 pages) and have edited the wohle meteorite part of this book, I'd like to make some additions, especially four our collector friends in the US. The 2014 Munich Show book METEORITES will be available at the Tucson Show 2015 at several booths. For those who don't want so long, maybe a collective order from the Munich Show web site https://munichshow.com/en/shop/the-show-catalogues/ is a good clue. Re: [meteorite-list] Struga, Macedonia
Hello Carsten, Rob, Larry and Anne, I got the offer of Mr. Ljupco as well and have investigated the case. Obviously there was an authentic meteorite fall on Sep 27, 1972 at about 6:00 local time near Struga, Macedonia. Several pieces of a chondrite have been collected from an impact pit. One large piece with fusion crust, weighing 2.7 kg went to the Skopje Museum. Other pieces from the impact site have been taken by private parties. The investigation of the material and the article mentioned by Carsten were carried out using material from a private owner. Curiously this specimen looked much more weathered than the Museum piece...? For unknown reasons it was not possible or allowed to investigate the 2.7 kg main mass from the Skopje Museum in 2009, when the article by Biljana Minceva-Sukarova was written and published. That was the reason, why the Nom Com of the Meteorite Bulletin did not accept the meteorite fall so far. Actually the Macedonian scientists wanted to analyze the obviously fresh and genuine Struga meteorite piece. But they were informed, that the 2.7 kg main mass was stolen from the Skopje Museum more than a year ago. So chances are bad, that this fall will get the status official soon. Kind regards Dieter - Original Message - From: Matson, Robert D. robert.d.mat...@saic.com To: Meteorite List meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com Sent: Monday, April 29, 2013 9:13 PM Subject: [meteorite-list] Struga, Macedonia Hi Carsten, Slow to respond to your list query of a couple weeks ago -- I don't recall seeing any reply to it: Does anyone have some informations about a possible Meteorite Fall (eye witnessed) in Struga, 1972? I already found some informations in the web, there is also a PDF about chemical analyses. But it seems this Meteorite has never been oficially published in the Meteoritical Bulletin? What could be the reason for this? Subsequent to your post, I received an (unsolicited) offer to buy a purported sample of this fall from a Mr. Ljupco from Macedonia -- I suspect you might have gotten a similar email which is what led to your post on the Met-List. (Anyone else out there also contacted?) The images that Mr. Ljupco provided of his father's find were not obviously meteoritic to me (especially for a supposedly contemporary H-chondrite fall), but they didn't look clearly terrestrial either. But the fact that Struga does not appear in the Meteoritical Bulletin, and only turns up in one web link (the PDF you mention) raises a red flag, IMO, as to the fall's validity, let alone the provenance of samples supposedly associated with it. Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorite casting.
Hello Eric, the building of silicon moulds and plaster casts, and especially the coloration of the models is rather time consuming, therefore we have built such casts only from very important meteorites, for example for unique meteorite pieces from which many Museums ordered copies (like Neuschwanstein, Moravka and Jesenice) or from very beautiful flight oriented specimens (like one of the Villalbeto de la Pena meteorites). The results were quite nice, as you can see with the Jesenice for example: http://www.meteorites.homepage.t-online.de/jpg/castjesenice.jpg http://www.meteorites.homepage.t-online.de/jpg/jesenice.jpg For special pupose, we also manufactured a few of these ceramics casts with a lead filling in order to get the genuine mass (proper weight) of the copy. Hello Ed and list, I'd like to add some corrections to the numbers in your last mail: PRIBRAM - Fell April 7, 1959 - first recovered meteorite with a known orbit - 4 fragments found, largest 4.250 kg - total 5.555 kg recovered. The specimen weight were: 4250, 772, 428 and 105 grams respectively. LOST CITY - First triangulated meteor photographed by the Prairie Network in the U.S.A. Fell 3 Jan 1970 and found 9 Jan 1970. 4 fragments found, largest 9.830 kg - total 17.322 kg recovered. The specimen weight were: 9830, 272, 6580 and 640 grams respectively. INNISFREE - Fell 5 Feb 1977 - Photographed by the Canadian MORP Fireball Network - 11 days later a 2.07 kg sample was found a few hundred meters from the predicted computer projection. 8 other fragments have since been found, Total mass 4.576 kg. Sadly both the Prairie Network in the U.S.A. and the MORP Network in Canada was shut down because of funding issues. The Sandia Research Group has since distributed two different all-sky cameras forming a video patrol network across much of North America. Some others have set up their own all-sky patrol cameras. The first Sandia cameras were of the hub-cap or convex mirror type but there was a problem reducing start and end points of a fireball with this type of system. They have since replaced most of these units with fisheye lens systems which are better. The first two systems used vcr's for recording but this has now been upgraded to video capture of a moving object to a computer hard drive. No more long hours wasted searching vcr tapes. Re: [meteorite-list] Circumstances of fireball associatedwith Salzwedel fall November 1985
Hello David and List, the fireball, that was observed with the Salzwedel meteorite fall, was catched with a meteor camera of the European Network. Unfortunately, the bolide was registered only by one camera station (since the others had poor weather). So, it was not pos- sible to reduce the fireball trajectory precisely (like in the more recent cases of the Neuschwanstein and Jesenice meteorite falls). Elton and list, there was NO meteorite impact in the Chiemgau in Southern Germany! This whole story about a comet impact and a huge strenfield of impact craters is nonsense. Re: [meteorite-list] Berduc information and questions
Hello Greg, you are asking for testing information on the Colonia Berduc fall: Well, a good way to prove the authenticity of fresh meteorite material (at least concerning the date of the fall) is the measuring of short-lived radio nuclides. This was done in the case of Colonia Berduc with three specimens (already 3 months after the fall): the results indicate clearly, that the tested material touched the Earth at or around April 6, 2008 +/- one week or two). Can anyone provide information about the direction of the fireball?? These data are of special interest in comparison with other meteorites that fell around this date of the year: Pribram on April 7, 1959 and Neuschwanstein on April 6, 2002. Re: [meteorite-list] lost city meteorite value?
Hello Martin and Matt, I guess, in several aspects, the LOST CITY meteorite fall is comparable with the meteorite fall of NEUSCHWANSTEIN, which is also a national treasure for Bavaria and Germany. In case of Neuschwanstein, 35 years of funded work have been necessary to get this photographically captured fireball and more than one year to find the three meteorites, that were recovered so far. A small portion of the EL6 chondrite Neuschwanstein found it's way to the meteorite market and was sold for prices between 250 $/g and 375 $/g, depending of size and special features (fusion crust, inclusions). Maybe this would be a good base for further discussions regarding the value of the Lost City meteorite. Cheers Dieter P.S. There is no need to discuss the value of PRIBRAM or INNISFREE, since these photographed falls are virtually NOT available. - Original Message - From: Martin Horejsi [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: Meteorite-List meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com Sent: Saturday, February 18, 2006 4:37 PM Subject: Re: [meteorite-list] lost city meteorite value? [meteorite-list] AD: Villalbeto de la Pena, Spain
Dear meteorite enthusiasts, for those, who had not the chance to secure a nice piece of the Spanish meteorite fall Villalbeto de la Pena of January 4, 2004, there is a last chance now. During the third (and last) field trip of our search team into this strewfield the harvest was much lower than expected, since the area has been searched very well and cleaned up in the meantime. Nevertheless, our group did not return with empty hands! One of the three recent (L6) meteorite specimens from the September 2005 expedition was cut into very neat, fully crusted slices. Some of them were already sold to customers that have placed a reservation. But two or three complete slices (between 3 g und 7 g) are still available. If you are interested, please e-mail me off list, and I will send you details and pictures of this fascinating material. In the June 2005 issue of Meteoritics and Planetary Science (MaPS) a nice article on the fall circumstances and analysis of the Villalbeto de la Pena meteorite was published. A printed copy of this article comes with every slice. There will be another MaPS publication about the trajectory of the fireball and the heliocentric orbit of the meteoroid soon. OK, the calculation was not as precise as in the case of the famous meteorite Neuschwanstein. But with the available videos/photos it was possible to re- construct a reliable orbit. So, if you are interested in a meteorite with a nice history and a perfect docu- mentation, please get in touch with me - before this rare material is gone. [meteorite-list] AD: Sale of Villalbeto de la Pena, Spain
Dear meteorite enthusiasts, exactly 18 months after the spectacular, Spanish meteorite fall of January 4, 2004, we can offer some pieces of this fall for sale. The meteorite fall was officially named Villalbeto de la Pena. We would like to offer you one of the first available pieces. Surely you already have heard and read about this brilliant daylight fireball and the multiple meteorite fall http://www.spmn.uji.es/ESP/nov38eng.html The L6 chondrites, that have been found there, were already fully analyzed, and details regarding this fall have been officially published in the Met. Bull. No. 88 (MaPS Aug 2004, vol. 39, p. A238). A detailed report about the Villalbeto de la Pena is already accepted and will be published soon in Meteoritics Planetary Science. This daylight fireball is very special, since there are several video recordings! So it was possible to calculate the heliocentric orbit of the meteoroid -- not as precise like in the Neuschwanstein case, but we got a very reliable orbit. The following pieces of the Villalbeto de la Pena meteorite (L6 chondrite) are available for sale at present: A complete individual of 77.6 g weight, covered with 100% thick, primary fusion crust. This specimen is really GORGEOUS! Price: 2140 EUR A rough piece of 46.7 g weight. This is a pocked-faced fragment covered with 98% thin and very fresh, black fusion crust. Some small pieces of the crust are chipped off, revealing the grey interior. Price: 1430 EUR End piece of 42.6 g weight. The cut surface shows much fresh metal. The black fusion crust covers almost the whole back of this end piece. Price: 970 EUR Part slice (of a fragment) of 26.2 g weight, with 70% fresh, black fusion crust. 5.7 mm thick. Price: 655 EUR End piece of 11.1 g weight. The cut surface shows much fresh metal. The black fusion crust covers the entire back of this end piece. Price: 350 EUR About three dozen meteorites have been found (the total weight is only 4.4 kg!), but most of the material was secured by Spanish Museums or it was was found by serious collectors, who would not part with their specimens. Therefore the pieces that we are offering here, are the first and most probably the only that will be available on the market at all. Only a few pieces are available, so take your chance now! When these pieces are gone, they are gone... Naturally, I guarantee for the authenticity of every single piece. Every specimen comes with my certificate and a DVD with photos and video clips of the two field trips and the meteorites finds in situ!!! Please let me know soon (off list), in which piece(s) you may be interested. If you like, I can send you scans and photos of the desired specimen(s). Re: [meteorite-list] doubtful material related to Berlin fireball
Hello Svend, thank you for pointing our attention onto this ebay auction. Here are some facts. On February 1, 2005 a bright fireball has been recorded by two cameras of the European Fireball Network (one near Berlin and one in the Czech Republic). The bolide looked quite promising. So we measured and calculated the event with high priority. We have the full reduction of the fireball - and we are pretty sure that NO fragments have reached the ground, although the initial mass was 200 kg. The material was rather fragile (most probably a carbo- naceous chondrite) and didn't survive it's 90 km fiery passage thru the Earth's atmosphere. I have written a detailed, four page, report about this fireball, but so far it's available in German only. It is quite obvious that the following auction http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemcategory=44608item=6164417570rd=1 is a classical ebay fraud. The seller started his ebay carreer yesterday!, and he tells pure nonsense: I'm absolutely sure, that there he has NO scientific analysis of his material. Furthermore there were NO publications that 10 kg of material in 100 gram sized fragments may have reached the ground! It seems to me that the seller just tries to make a fortune with junk. He also claims, that he recently has found 34 fragment of 7 different meteorites here in Germany. So we are anxious what he is going to offer us next. Kind regards from Germany Dieter Heinlein DLR Fireball Network - Original Message - From: Dr. Svend Buhl [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com Sent: Monday, March 21, 2005 11:18 AM Subject: [meteorite-list] doubtful material related to Berlin fireball Hi list, some of the German members of this list might have noticed there has been a fireball sighting in the Berlin area in February. The event lasted for about five seconds and has also been recorded by a camera of the European Fireball Network. There have been a couple of newspaper and TV-reports since then featuring scientists claiming that the entire 200 kg mass has vaporized during descent according to their calculations. Other reports showed various self declared meteorite hunters combing the terrain for cosmic booty, one of them equipped with a rather professional magnetometer, but none of them has claimed any finds in public yet. Anyhow, since there has been no official confirmation regarding recovered material of this fall I wonder about the nature of this material: http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemcategory=44608item=6164417570rd=1 The seller claims to offer material of the - recent year 2005 Berlin fal l- which - has been tested by scientific institutions - as he states in his description. This is only one of several doubtful meteorite offers currently online in German ebay. Another seller offers a large piece of a meteorite from Rissani which is obviously not a meteorite, but rather a piece of magnetite-rich basalt. This auction has already found a bidder. I know that none of the reputable German sellers known to this list are involved in the cases mentioned above. But since I neglected German ebay for a couple of months, I wonder if I just stepped on single exceptions or if I missed a general trend. I f so, I might consider to invest in a sophisticated meteorwrong collection ... cheers Svend www.niger-meteorite-recon.de __ Mit WEB.DE FreePhone mit hoechster Qualitaet ab 0 Ct./Min. weltweit telefonieren! http://freephone.web.de/?mc=021201 __ Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list __ Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

Re: [meteorite-list] meteoroid temperature
Hello Lars, the temperature of meteoroids in space was explicitely calculated with the famous Neuschwanstein meteorite, which fell on April 6, 2002 in Bavaria. It was the fourth meteorite fall in history with a photographed and therefore precisely calculated orbit around the sun. The equilibrium temperature of the Neuschwanstein meteoroid was at the time of impact (1.0 a.u): 278 K = +5° C in the aphelion of its orbit (4.0 a.u.): 139 K = -134° C in the perihelion of its orbit (0.8 a.u.): 313 K = + 40° C It's rather simple physics to determine these values. [meteorite-list] Meteoroid speed (was Sikhote Alin)
Hello list, the region where meteoroids penetrating our atmosphere produce visible light (so-called fireball) is mainly dominated by two factors: the air density and the velocity of the incoming body. Generally, ordinary meteoroids with preatmospheric masses in the range of several hundred kilogramms or even several tons, entering the atmosphere at about 20 km/s -30 km/s (72,000 km/h - 108,000 km/h) start their luminous flight at about 90 km or 80 km height, where the Earth's atmosphere is dense enough to interact with the incoming body. During it's fiery flight of only several seconds the meteoroid ablates extremely (mass loss: 90% - 99%, in most cases: 100%!) and is decelerated until the light production stops rapidy: this is typically the case in heights of about 20 km - 25 km, when the velocity reaches the critical value of 3 km/s (10,800 km/h). After that point the remaining meteoroid body is decelerated even more by the air that becomes denser at lower altitudes. After several minutes the body (then called a meteorite) reaches the ground with the so-called free fall velocity of about 280 km/h. In order to produce a meteorite fall with a fireball reaching the ground, the body must be really huge: these are the impact cratering events! The Arizona crater body or the Noerdlinger Ries meteoroid are good examples. I doubt very much that any of the Sikhote Alin meteorites has reached the ground while still producing light. because this would imply that the reach the ground with a good portion of their cosmic velocity! Better to be VERY far away in such a case of a meteorite fall. [meteorite-list] Neuschwanstein
Hi list, there have been some comments regarding the weathering of the recently recovered German meteorite Neuschwanstein on this list. According to my experience with freshly fallen meteorites and also with our (wet) climate in Central Europe, we expected to see just THIS state of weathering of the 1.75 kg stony meteorite, that fell on April 6, but was found only on July 14 -- after lying more that 3 months on the ground. Some actual images of the Neuschwanstein meteorite can be found at http://www.meteorites.de/en.htm You will see that this stone is less weathered as it looked like from the few images that appeared on the web. But the photographers always wanted to show the most interesting side of the stone with the best contrast, i.e. the side with the rusty spots... At present the shortlived cosmogenic radioisotopes of this meteorite are measured at the Max-Planck-Institute of Nuclear Physics in Heidelberg. After that we will make a mould and casts of the complete and so far uncut stone. Only then, the first piece will be cut off for mineralogical analysis. We, as probably many of you, are very anxious to see the results of all the analyses, but every step has to be done carefully and in the proper order. [meteorite-list] Dr. David J. Roddy
Ourthoughts are with the late Dr. David J. Roddy. We will think of him often, also in the future, when we look at the print of his famous areal photo of Meteor Crater, hanging in our dining room. Farewell David Dieter Gabi Heinlein, Augsburg
Re: [meteorite-list] KOEFELSITE (was: Garland meteorite)
Hello George, Anne and List, the Austrian rocks called KOEFELSITE are NOT meteorites and they are NOT impactites. The impact origin of the Koefelsite was discussed, but could NOT be confirmed. This rock was formed by earthly forces. I have been to the site in Austria several times and have collected samples as well. Everyone interested to study these rocks can contact me off-list and I'm willing to send him/her a nice sample for free (if he/she is willing to take over the shipping costs). Can any one tell me if this material is legitimate? I want to thank the members of the list for the valuable information and leads that are posted daily. Re: [meteorite-list] Betting on Rob's New Moroccan Fall
Andrei Razvan, instead of betting aubrite on Rob's New Moroccan Fall, you better should pay your last bill for my meteorite delivery. You are due the money since September 1999. And that is a bit much for my taste! [meteorite-list] carbonaceous chondrites
Hello list, carbonaceous chondrites are one the most fascinating meteorites that ever touched the Earth. We have just updated our web site: so check out our new items: www.meteorites.de/sale.htm # KAROONDA: if you have the chance to find this fragile CK4 fall, these will be crumbs; but we have "large" solid pieces up to 1 g # slices of MURCHISON: have you ever seen this CM2 cut? Most dealers offer only fragment, since this material is extremely difficult to cut and you loose very much weight: but it's worth!!! # the classic beauty: ALLENDE slices with interesting inclusions If you visit our site, take a moment to have a look for some other CLASSICAL pieces, as JUVINAS and L'AIGLE. Furthermore we have decided to sell one of our Museum Show pieces: a 474 gram specimen of SARATOV. We look forward to hearing from you, Gabi and Dieter Heinlein, BML P.S. There is ONE piece left of the ELBOGEN iron. If you are inter- ested, please contact us for details.
