[meteorite-list] Munich show book (Meteorites) report

2014-11-05 Thread Dieter Heinlein via Meteorite-list

Hello Fred,

thank you very much for your enthusiastic report about our Munich Show book.

Since I have written seven articles (about 50 pages) and have edited the wohle
meteorite part of this book, I'd like to make some additions, especially four
our
collector friends in the US.

The 2014 Munich Show book METEORITES will be available at the Tucson
Show 2015 at several booths.
For those who don't want so long, maybe a collective order from the Munich Show
web site https://munichshow.com/en/shop/the-show-catalogues/ is a good clue.
The shipping costs for SINGLE book orders are very hight - but if more than ten
copies are ordered, the shipping is totally free of charge (worldwide)!
https://munichshow.com/en/shop/shipping-information/

Enjoy reading!

Best regards

Dieter

Re: [meteorite-list] Struga, Macedonia

2013-04-30 Thread Dieter Heinlein
Hello Carsten, Rob, Larry and Anne,

I got the offer of Mr. Ljupco as well and have investigated the case.

Obviously there was an authentic meteorite fall on Sep 27, 1972 at
about 6:00 local time near Struga, Macedonia. Several pieces of a
chondrite have been collected from an impact pit. One large piece
with fusion crust, weighing 2.7 kg went to the Skopje Museum.
Other pieces from the impact site have been taken by private parties.

The investigation of the material and the article mentioned by Carsten
were carried out using material from a private owner. Curiously this
specimen looked much more weathered than the Museum piece...?
For unknown reasons it was not possible or allowed to investigate
the 2.7 kg main mass from the Skopje Museum in 2009, when the
article by Biljana Minceva-Sukarova was written and published.
That was the reason, why the Nom Com of the Meteorite Bulletin
did not accept the meteorite fall so far.

Actually the Macedonian scientists wanted to analyze the obviously
fresh and genuine Struga meteorite piece. But they were informed,
that the 2.7 kg main mass was stolen from the Skopje Museum
more than a year ago. So chances are bad, that this fall will get the
status official soon.

Kind regards

Dieter

Hi Carsten,

Slow to respond to your list query of a couple weeks ago -- I don't
recall seeing any reply to it:

Does anyone have some informations about a possible Meteorite Fall
(eye witnessed) in Struga, 1972? I already found some informations
in the web, there is also a PDF about chemical analyses. But it
seems this Meteorite has never been oficially published in the
Meteoritical Bulletin? What could be the reason for this?

Subsequent to your post, I received an (unsolicited) offer to buy
a purported sample of this fall from a Mr. Ljupco from Macedonia --
I suspect you might have gotten a similar email which is what led
to your post on the Met-List. (Anyone else out there also
contacted?)

The images that Mr. Ljupco provided of his father's find were not
obviously meteoritic to me (especially for a supposedly contemporary
H-chondrite fall), but they didn't look clearly terrestrial either.
But the fact that Struga does not appear in the Meteoritical Bulletin,
and only turns up in one web link (the PDF you mention) raises a red
flag, IMO, as to the fall's validity, let alone the provenance of
samples supposedly associated with it.

Cheers,
Rob

The offering of food in the video shows the extent of the hospitality of the Bavarians. Anyone aboard the meteoroid could feast

Would it be possible for anyone lucky to visit this fantastic event to submit a picture of the NEUSCHWANSTEIN meteorite display to

Thank you Dieter, such a pleasure to hear from you about this fall you
were so closely involved in the chase. May 27 is too long to wait for
the anniversary of the two Bavarian mystery finders, so hopefully we
can see that picture soon.

Paul does a great service to the meteorite community with that
calendar; it's hard to believe he's done so much even when there are
undoubtably times he is swamped, so whenever he can exhibit this united
appearence of three stones, the result of blood, sweat, tears,
successes and spine-tingling excitement and emotional roller-coastering
in fantasyland, will be great.

For Pribram, three cheers for Bohemia! Grandpapa of them all. And
watch your heads this morning ;-) Maybe some respectable fireball was
registered with a similar radiant by luck this time? Since this is the
10 earth year anniversary of the NEUSCHWANSTEIN meteoric event, I'm now
wondering what you guys could remind us what was the length of a
NEUSCHWANSTEIN / PRIBRAM year? You know, we need to forge a
politically correct Solar system for the benefit of the little Robinson
Crusoe Neuschwaner stowaways, we need to speak in their terms, too !
;-)

thanks again

Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorite casting.

2010-11-21 Thread Dieter Heinlein

Hello Eric,

the building of silicon moulds and plaster casts, and especially the coloration
of the models is rather time consuming, therefore we have built such casts
only from very important meteorites, for example for unique meteorite pieces
from which many Museums ordered copies (like Neuschwanstein, Moravka
and Jesenice) or from very beautiful flight oriented specimens (like one of the
Villalbeto de la Pena meteorites).

The results were quite nice, as you can see with the Jesenice for example:
http://www.meteorites.homepage.t-online.de/jpg/castjesenice.jpg
http://www.meteorites.homepage.t-online.de/jpg/jesenice.jpg

For special pupose, we also manufactured a few of these ceramics casts with
a lead filling in order to get the genuine mass (proper weight) of the copy.

Best regards

Dieter

Hi,
When you find a new meteorite you suppose to send a sample to
analysis. This means that you will need to cut it and you will loose
its natural beautiful shape. Can you do a casting of the meteorite
before you will cut it? What kind of materials should you use not to
affect a meteorite's chemical components? Is it recommended or not to
do a meteorite cast before a sample analysis? Does anybody have any
experience in casting a meteorite?

Hello Ed and list,

I'd like to add some corrections to the numbers in your last mail:

PRIBRAM - Fell April 7, 1959 - first recovered meteorite with a known
orbit - 4 fragments found, largest 4.250 kg - total 5.555 kg recovered.

The specimen weight were: 4250, 772, 428 and 105 grams respectively.

LOST CITY - First triangulated meteor photographed by the Prairie
Network in the U.S.A. Fell 3 Jan 1970 and found 9 Jan 1970.
4 fragments found, largest 9.830 kg - total 17.322 kg recovered.

The specimen weight were: 9830, 272, 6580 and 640 grams respectively.

INNISFREE - Fell 5 Feb 1977 - Photographed by the Canadian MORP
Fireball Network - 11 days later a 2.07 kg sample was found a
few hundred meters from the predicted
computer projection. 8 other fragments have since been found, Total
mass 4.576 kg.

Sadly both the Prairie Network in the U.S.A. and the MORP Network in
Canada was shut down because of funding issues. The Sandia Research
Group has since distributed two different all-sky cameras forming a
video patrol network across much of North America. Some others have
set up their own all-sky patrol cameras. The first Sandia cameras
were of the hub-cap or convex mirror type but there was a problem
reducing start and end points of a fireball with this type of
system. They have since replaced most of these units with fisheye
lens systems which are better. The first two systems used vcr's for
recording but this has now been upgraded to video capture of a moving
object to a computer hard drive. No more long hours wasted searching
vcr tapes.

You can see the current network map and contacts at: http://

Re: [meteorite-list] Circumstances of fireball associatedwith Salzwedel fall November 1985

2010-07-14 Thread Dieter Heinlein

Hello David and List,

the fireball, that was observed with the Salzwedel meteorite fall, was catched
with
a meteor camera of the European Network. Unfortunately, the bolide was
registered
only by one camera station (since the others had poor weather). So, it was not
pos-
sible to reduce the fireball trajectory precisely (like in the more recent
cases of the
Neuschwanstein and Jesenice meteorite falls).

Elton and list,

there was NO meteorite impact in the Chiemgau in Southern Germany! This whole
story about a comet impact and a huge strenfield of impact craters is nonsense.

These appears to be a perfect marriage of amateur and academic cooperation.

This is a good example of VOODOO SCIENCE!!
There is NO hard evidence of impact features. The whole impact scenario, as de-
scribed by this amateur group, is theoretically and pratically IMPOSSIBLE.

There are many, many good reasons why the socalled Chiemgau impact is NOT
accepted in the scientific community.

Chiemgau in Southern Germany contains a 4500yo crater field which was largely brought to scientific light just this decade and
largely investigated by what we fondly know as amateurs --quiet capable and serious amateurs I might add. These appears to be a
perfect marriage of amateur and academic cooperation.

Their thoroughness is a hallmark to achieve in future investigation.
Documentation for this crater field is top notch and has been presented in
detail at this website.

http://www.chiemgau-impact.com/geschichte.html

The PDF file at this link is deserving of book status and contains amongst other things, photos of bone and hair samples
suggesting the Chiemgau impactor was indeed a very large hammer.

Are any of the CIRT members also members of this list? IF so please speak up

Re: [meteorite-list] Berduc information and questions

2009-03-10 Thread Dieter Heinlein

Hello Greg,

you are asking for testing information on the Colonia Berduc fall:

Well, a good way to prove the authenticity of fresh meteorite material
(at least concerning the date of the fall) is the measuring of short-lived
radio nuclides. This was done in the case of Colonia Berduc with three
specimens (already 3 months after the fall): the results indicate clearly,
that the tested material touched the Earth at or around April 6, 2008
+/- one week or two).

Can anyone provide information about the direction of the fireball??
These data are of special interest in comparison with other meteorites
that fell around this date of the year: Pribram on April 7, 1959 and
Neuschwanstein on April 6, 2002.

Is there a reason that its not been published on the met bull yet? There have been several falls that were published within only a

There was an article about forensic work on a meteorite, which was claimed by the finder to be of origin in a certain European
country in one of the more recent MAPS (Meteoritics and Planetary Science) papers, which I unfortunately don´t have at hands here in
Berlin, but instead at my other home (...other subscribers to MAPS may have the paper infos quicker than I can find out from here
right now, please report...). By forensic analysis this was clearly resolved to be a fake from the finder! It was in fact a
dislocated hot desert meteorite. Whoever tries to do this nowadays must rest assured he/she has to face conviction and last but not
least all the personally induced consequences when trying to communicate with the society of meteoritical science, dealers and
collectors alike ever after this...

Re: [meteorite-list] the biggest tektite ?

Hi Zelimir,

- How heavy is the biggest Rizalite known on earth ?
You may be right, that the 1069 g Rizalite specimen, mentioned by H.O. Beyer
ist the heaviest Philippine Tektite.
But there is one Rizalite in my collection, that is even larger: It is a 1009 gram splash

form Tektite from Paracale with a large bubble inside. It's density is only
2.004
(common, compact tektites have densities around 2.43) and it has the size (volume)
of a Rizalite, weighing around 1223 grams.

Hi Aubrey, Norm, List

In Ensisheim (in 3 weeks from now), there will be again a substantial
selection of tektites (mostly Rizalites, Cambodianites, some Vietnamites)
for sale (on consignment, in the consignment room) at interesting prices.
As in 2006, some Rizalite monsters (over 450 g) are anounced.

My 2 specific questions are more general:

- How heavy is the biggest tektite (Muong Nong not counted) known on earth ?
- How heavy is the biggest Vietnamite known on earth ?
- How heavy is the biggest Rizalite known on earth ?

For Rizalite, my best reference is the 1069 g specimen as mentioned by H.
O. Beyer (Philippine tektites).
I could not find any spectacular data (i.e. over, say, 250-300 g) for
vietnamites...

Thanks and best wsihes,

Zelimir

P.S. Aubrey, very nice site! Congratulations! And these London
microtektites are really intriguing !

2007-01-21 Thread Dieter Heinlein
Hello Mike and list,

I was trying very hard to get a piece of the Innisfree meteorite for my private
collection
since over 20 years! Since I already have Pribram, Lost City, Neuschwanstein,
Moravka
and Peekskill in my collection -- so an Innisfree specimen would be more than
welcome!

But there was NO chance. If another private collector was luckier, please
contact me.

Thank you.

20 US$. I decided to let it go for 300 US$, including postage handling.

If you agree, I'll let you know my PayPal address for payment.

I'm sorry, but a trade for meteorites is not possible in this particular case.

Hello Bernd list,

at the MPIK in Heidelberg there are NO meteorites any more since
several years, and the meteorite collection of the MPIC Mainz was
transfered also to the Senckenberg Museum in Frankfurt, that it is

Therefore, Fred, please head for the Senckenberg Museum in

 Hi list,

just a short comment from the European Fireball Network.

The fireball was seen in the evening twilight: On June 11 at 10.10 pm CEST,
our cameras did not yet start to work. So the bolide came too early in order
to be registered by our camera stations.

I suppose that it was a pretty large chunk of cometary debris and not
a meteorite dropping event. We registere several of these cometary
fireballs every month. Some (especially those that occur in the evening
hours) make it to the media and some dont..

If casual observers report, that the meteorite must have landed behind
the next tree, it make not very much sense to start a searching campain
 there... :-))

 Ho list,

a fireball in Germany made it to the larger newspapers, which are in such
 respects normally rather reserved.

 Shortly combined:

On June 11th in the evening at 10:10 pm a bright fireball with fiery tail
was independently witnessed by several people in several places in Northern
 Germany
(Kissenbrück, Peine, Gifhorn (there were the meteorite fair takes place),
 Braunschweig, Schöningen, Beierstedt, Salzgitter, Vienenburg).
Scientists from several regional institute believe, that it was a fall of a
meteorite, but are not sure, whether it was a dropper and whether material
made it to the ground. The possible impact area is supposed to be in
 Saxony-Anhalt.

Dieter, had the camera network caught the bolide? Was it a dropper?

 Buckleboo!

Re: [meteorite-list] lost city meteorite value?

2006-02-18 Thread Dieter Heinlein
Hello Martin and Matt,

I guess, in several aspects, the LOST CITY meteorite fall is comparable
with the meteorite fall of NEUSCHWANSTEIN, which is also a national
treasure for Bavaria and Germany.
In case of Neuschwanstein, 35 years of funded work have been necessary
to get this photographically captured fireball and more than one year to find
the three meteorites, that were recovered so far.

A small portion of the EL6 chondrite Neuschwanstein found it's way to the
meteorite market and was sold for prices between 250 $/g and 375 $/g,
depending of size and special features (fusion crust, inclusions). Maybe this
would be a good base for further discussions regarding the value of the
Lost City meteorite.

Cheers

Dieter

P.S. There is no need to discuss the value of PRIBRAM or INNISFREE,
since these photographed falls are virtually NOT available.

Hi Matt,

Sorry to post to all, but I think this is a good stimulus for
discussion on meteorite prices, especially since there was a
deliberate and large cost in the recovery of Lost City.

In a way, I consider this particular meteorite somewhat of a national
treasure because it too 10 years of funded work to capture its fall on
film, and another couple of weeks to find the stone. Further, the
majority of the masses are on display in the US National Museum.

So what is it worth per gram? Good question.

Cheers,

Martin

[meteorite-list] AD: Villalbeto de la Pena, Spain

2005-12-14 Thread Dieter Heinlein
Dear meteorite enthusiasts,

for those, who had not the chance to secure a nice piece of the Spanish
meteorite fall Villalbeto de la Pena of January 4, 2004, there is a last
chance now.

During the third (and last) field trip of our search team into this strewfield
the harvest was much lower than expected, since the area has been searched
very well and cleaned up in the meantime. Nevertheless, our group did not
return with empty hands!

One of the three recent (L6) meteorite specimens from the September 2005
expedition was cut into very neat, fully crusted slices.
Some of them were already sold to customers that have placed a reservation.
But two or three complete slices (between 3 g und 7 g) are still available.

If you are interested, please e-mail me off list, and I will send you details
and
pictures of this fascinating material.

In the June 2005 issue of Meteoritics and Planetary Science (MaPS) a nice
article on the fall circumstances and analysis of the Villalbeto de la Pena
meteorite was published. A printed copy of this article comes with every slice.
There will be another MaPS publication about the trajectory of the fireball and
the heliocentric orbit of the meteoroid soon.
OK, the calculation was not as precise as in the case of the famous meteorite
Neuschwanstein. But with the available videos/photos it was possible to re-
construct a reliable orbit.

So, if you are interested in a meteorite with a nice history and a perfect docu-
mentation, please get in touch with me - before this rare material is gone.

Kind regards

[meteorite-list] AD: Sale of Villalbeto de la Pena, Spain

2005-07-03 Thread Dieter Heinlein
Dear meteorite enthusiasts,

exactly 18 months after the spectacular, Spanish meteorite fall of January 4,
2004, we can offer some pieces of this fall for sale. The meteorite fall was
officially named Villalbeto de la Pena. We would like to offer you one of
the first available pieces. Surely you already have heard and read about this
brilliant daylight fireball and the multiple meteorite fall
http://www.spmn.uji.es/ESP/nov38eng.html

The L6 chondrites, that have been found there, were already fully analyzed,
and details regarding this fall have been officially published in the Met.
Bull.
No. 88 (MaPS Aug 2004, vol. 39, p. A238).
A detailed report about the Villalbeto de la Pena is already accepted and
will be published soon in Meteoritics Planetary Science.

This daylight fireball is very special, since there are several video
recordings!
So it was possible to calculate the heliocentric orbit of the meteoroid -- not
as precise like in the Neuschwanstein case, but we got a very reliable orbit.

The following pieces of the Villalbeto de la Pena meteorite (L6 chondrite)
are available for sale at present:

A complete individual of 77.6 g weight, covered with 100% thick, primary
fusion crust. This specimen is really GORGEOUS! Price: 2140 EUR

A rough piece of 46.7 g weight. This is a pocked-faced fragment covered
with 98% thin and very fresh, black fusion crust. Some small pieces of the
crust are chipped off, revealing the grey interior. Price: 1430 EUR

End piece of 42.6 g weight. The cut surface shows much fresh metal. The black
fusion crust covers almost the whole back of this end piece. Price: 970 EUR

Part slice (of a fragment) of 26.2 g weight, with 70% fresh, black fusion crust.
5.7 mm thick. Price: 655 EUR

End piece of 11.1 g weight. The cut surface shows much fresh metal. The black
fusion crust covers the entire back of this end piece. Price: 350 EUR

About three dozen meteorites have been found (the total weight is only 4.4
kg!),
but most of the material was secured by Spanish Museums or it was was found
by serious collectors, who would not part with their specimens. Therefore the
pieces that we are offering here, are the first and most probably the only that
will be available on the market at all. Only a few pieces are available, so take
your chance now! When these pieces are gone, they are gone...

Naturally, I guarantee for the authenticity of every single piece. Every
specimen
comes with my certificate and a DVD with photos and video clips of the two
field trips and the meteorites finds in situ!!!

Please let me know soon (off list), in which piece(s) you may be interested.
If you like, I can send you scans and photos of the desired specimen(s).

Kind regards

Re: [meteorite-list] doubtful material related to Berlin fireball

2005-03-21 Thread Dieter Heinlein
Hello Svend,

thank you for pointing our attention onto this ebay auction.

Here are some facts. On February 1, 2005 a bright fireball has been recorded
by two cameras of the European Fireball Network (one near Berlin and one in
the Czech Republic). The bolide looked quite promising. So we measured and
calculated the event with high priority. We have the full reduction of the
fireball
- and we are pretty sure that NO fragments have reached the ground, although the
initial mass was 200 kg. The material was rather fragile (most probably a carbo-
naceous chondrite) and didn't survive it's 90 km fiery passage thru the Earth's
atmosphere. I have written a detailed, four page, report about this fireball,
but
so far it's available in German only.

It is quite obvious that the following auction

http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemcategory=44608item=6164417570rd=1

is a classical ebay fraud. The seller started his ebay carreer yesterday!, and
he
tells pure nonsense: I'm absolutely sure, that there he has NO scientific
analysis of
his material. Furthermore there were NO publications that 10 kg of material in
100
gram sized fragments may have reached the ground!
It seems to me that the seller just tries to make a fortune with junk. He also
claims, that he recently has found 34 fragment of 7 different meteorites here
in
Germany. So we are anxious what he is going to offer us next.

Kind regards from Germany

Subject: [meteorite-list] doubtful material related to Berlin fireball

 Hi list,

some of the German members of this list might have noticed there has been a
fireball sighting in the Berlin area in February.
The event lasted for about five seconds and has also been recorded by a camera
of the European Fireball Network.

There have been a couple of newspaper and TV-reports since then featuring
scientists claiming that the entire 200 kg mass has
vaporized during descent according to their calculations. Other reports showed
various self declared meteorite hunters combing
the terrain for cosmic booty, one of them equipped with a rather professional
magnetometer, but none of them has claimed any
finds in public yet.

Anyhow, since there has been no official confirmation regarding recovered
material of this fall I wonder about the nature of
this material:

 http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemcategory=44608item=6164417570rd=1

The seller claims to offer material of the - recent year 2005 Berlin fal l-
which - has been tested by scientific
institutions - as he states in his description.

This is only one of several doubtful meteorite offers currently online in
German ebay. Another seller offers a large piece of
a meteorite from Rissani which is obviously not a meteorite, but rather a piece
of magnetite-rich basalt. This auction has
already found a bidder.

I know that none of the reputable German sellers known to this list are
involved in the cases mentioned above. But since I
neglected German ebay for a couple of months, I wonder if I just stepped on
single exceptions or if I missed a general trend. I
f so, I might consider to invest in a sophisticated meteorwrong collection ...

 cheers
 Svend

Re: [meteorite-list] meteoroid temperature

2005-01-06 Thread Dieter Heinlein
Hello Lars,

the temperature of meteoroids in space was explicitely calculated with the
famous Neuschwanstein meteorite, which fell on April 6, 2002 in Bavaria.
It was the fourth meteorite fall in history with a photographed and therefore
precisely calculated orbit around the sun.

The equilibrium temperature of the Neuschwanstein meteoroid was
at the time of impact (1.0 a.u): 278 K = +5° C
in the aphelion of its orbit (4.0 a.u.): 139 K = -134° C
in the perihelion of its orbit (0.8 a.u.): 313 K = + 40° C

It's rather simple physics to determine these values. If you are interested
to learn more about it, please contact me off list.

Re: [meteorite-list] Calculating a meteorite orbit

2004-09-24 Thread Dieter Heinlein
Hello Pierre-Marie,

some years ago I have written a booklet on the Pribram, Lost City or Innisfree falls,
describing the reduction procedure how to calculate the meteoroid orbit from the
fireball trajectory. It's written in German, but anyhow you will be mostly interested
in the formulas I guess. This booklet is still available from us on request.

Btw, this procedure was used also in the recent case of the successful recovery of
the Neuschwanstein meteorites. But the process is time consuming and not easy to
explain! Don't expect to get an Excel spreadsheet which gives you the result in a
few minutes. It's really hard work

Best regards

Dieter

 Hello,

I'm searching for an Excel program or a document explaining how to determine the
orbit of a meteorite fallen on earth according to
the fact that we know the impact point, trajectory, altitude and speed, pictures of
the bolide.
This technique of orbit calculation was used on Pribram, Lost City or Innisfree for
 example.

 I need your help ;-)

Re: [meteorite-list] Peekskill CAST

2004-08-02 Thread Dieter Heinlein
Hello Marcin,

three years ago I had a similar problem, as I needed two casts of Peekskill for two
travelling meteorite exhibitions. At that time (summer 2001) there were NO casts
of Peekskill available on the market, and I had to buy these casts back from two
collectors at high prices.

Btw, there are some very nice casts of the Neuschwanstein meteorite, that fell
on April 6, 2002 in Bavaria, Germany still available from our web site
www.meteorites.de/sale.htm
Go to the bottom of this site and you will find them with a picture and description.

[meteorite-list] Meteoroid speed (was Sikhote Alin)

2004-02-22 Thread Dieter Heinlein
Hello list,

the region where meteoroids penetrating our atmosphere produce visible light
(so-called fireball) is mainly dominated by two factors: the air density and the
velocity of the incoming body.
Generally, ordinary meteoroids with preatmospheric masses in the range of
several hundred kilogramms or even several tons, entering the atmosphere at
about 20 km/s -30 km/s (72,000 km/h - 108,000 km/h) start their luminous
flight at about 90 km or 80 km height, where the Earth's atmosphere is dense
enough to interact with the incoming body.
During it's fiery flight of only several seconds the meteoroid ablates extremely
(mass loss: 90% - 99%, in most cases: 100%!) and is decelerated until the
light production stops rapidy: this is typically the case in heights of about 20 km
- 25 km, when the velocity reaches the critical value of 3 km/s (10,800 km/h).
After that point the remaining meteoroid body is decelerated even more by the
air that becomes denser at lower altitudes. After several minutes the body (then
called a meteorite) reaches the ground with the so-called free fall velocity of
about 280 km/h.

In order to produce a meteorite fall with a fireball reaching the ground, the body
must be really huge: these are the impact cratering events! The Arizona crater body
or the Noerdlinger Ries meteoroid are good examples.

I doubt very much that any of the Sikhote Alin meteorites has reached the ground
while still producing light. because this would imply that the reach the ground
with a good portion of their cosmic velocity! Better to be VERY far away in such
a case of a meteorite fall.

Then he has a piece to study how real meteorites look like.

Btw, was is difficult to prevent your meteorites from falling into pieces?

Not many list members were aware, but my son and I were on the scene in
April hunting for this meteorite. While the first suspected finds were
actually bitumen/ asphalt --(any expert should be able to distinguish
asphalt from a real meteorite,Duh!) and the discussion drug on and on on
in the list, we quietly sequestered away the main mass and fragments
and am offering list members first selection now that the classification
has been completed. Virtually every piece is fully crusted. It was a
miracle I was able to get it back through customs.

We are only reporting this now that the 18 month limitation to resend
a contract have fully expired. The farmer who owned the land seemed
bemused that we would offer to by it from him but he happily took our
euros, but he hadn't heard about the meteorite. I guess he was happy to
have it moved out of his way. I felt a little guilty not telling him
 the whole story.

I've embargoed this photo long enough. It is the main mass /in situ/
however the coordinates are being withheld pending another recovery
 attempt. http://www.epix.net/~jonee/neu1strewn.jpg

After the first of the year, we will be offering some of this find
starting at $255 per gram and up, depending on cutting losses and
shrinkage. Please let me know what size you are interested in and we'll
 try to cut to order.

[meteorite-list] Three Neuschwanstein meteorites

2003-12-16 Thread Dieter Heinlein
Hello Christian, Mauro and list,

here is a summary of the meteorite finds in the strewnfield of the
NEUSCHWANSTEIN fall, that occured on April 6, 2002:

Three specimens of this multiple EL6 chondrite fall have been found
so far:

Neuschwanstein One:
1750 grams, found on July 14, 2002, in Bavaria, Germany
The Bavarian State Museum has purchased the stone from the finder.
The meteorite is on public display in the Ries Crater Museum in Nördlingen.

Neuschwanstein Two:
1625 grams, found on May 27, 2003, in Bavaria, Germany
This is the only one of the three, that was found in situ in it's impact hole!!!
The stone is still in posession of the finder.

Neuschwanstein Three:
2842 grams, found on June 29, 2003, in Tyrol, Austria
Likewise this stone is still in posession of the finder.

Mauro, I have looked into your photo gallery
http://f1.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/mauroianeselli/my_photos
but I found, that these images are from last year's Munich Mineralientage
and not from 2003. They show only the display of Neuschwanstein One.
I didn't find the album Neuschwanstein.

Kind regards

Dieter

P.S. There will be a series of articles about NEUSCHWANSTEIN published
in Meteoritics and Planetary Sciences early next year, which we recently have
submitted to the editors:
J.Oberst, D.Heinlein, U.Köhler, P. Spurny will report about the Circumstances
of the meteorite fall, the search activities and the meteorite finds
J.Zipfel et. al. will report about the Mineralogy of this extraordinary EL6 condrite
D.Revelle P.Brown will report about Seismic data and Infrasound recordings.

4. Murchison
5. Lost City
6. Peekskill
7. Glanerbrug
8. Elbogen
9. Portales Valley
10. Sikhote Alin

[meteorite-list] Neuschwanstein

Hello Mark,

very interesting thoughts!

The thin section analysis of the Neuschwanstein meteorite showed
that it is an E6 chondrite! The wet chemical analysis to determine if
it's an EH or EL will be carried out asap.
But anyway, Neuschwanstein is an enstatite chondrite and not an
ordinary chondrite.

[meteorite-list] Neuschwanstein

2002-08-11 Thread Dieter Heinlein

Hi list,

there have been some comments regarding the weathering of the recently
recovered German meteorite Neuschwanstein on this list.
According to my experience with freshly fallen meteorites and also with
our (wet) climate in Central Europe, we expected to see just THIS state
of weathering of the 1.75 kg stony meteorite, that fell on April 6, but was
found only on July 14 -- after lying more that 3 months on the ground.
Some actual images of the Neuschwanstein meteorite can be found at
http://www.meteorites.de/en.htm
You will see that this stone is less weathered as it looked like from the
few images that appeared on the web. But the photographers always
wanted to show the most interesting side of the stone with the best
contrast, i.e. the side with the rusty spots...

At present the shortlived cosmogenic radioisotopes of this meteorite are
measured at the Max-Planck-Institute of Nuclear Physics in Heidelberg.
After that we will make a mould and casts of the complete and so far
uncut stone. Only then, the first piece will be cut off for mineralogical
analysis.

We, as probably many of you, are very anxious to see the results of all the
analyses, but every step has to be done carefully and in the proper order.

With best regards

[meteorite-list] carbonaceous chondrites

2002-02-24 Thread Dieter Heinlein

Hello list,

carbonaceous chondrites are one the most
fascinating meteorites that
ever touched the Earth.

We have just updated our web site: so check out our
new items:
www.meteorites.de/sale.htm

# KAROONDA: if you have the chance to find
this fragile CK4 fall,
these will be crumbs; but we
have "large" solid pieces up to 1 g
# slices of MURCHISON: have you ever seen
this CM2 cut? Most
 dealers offer only fragment,
since this material is extremely
difficult to cut and you loose
very much weight: but it's worth!!!
# the classic beauty: ALLENDE slices with
interesting inclusions

If you visit our site, take a moment to have a look
for some other
CLASSICAL pieces, as JUVINAS and L'AIGLE.
Furthermore we
have decided to sell one of our Museum Show pieces:
a 474 gram
specimen of SARATOV.

We look forward to hearing from you,

Gabi and Dieter Heinlein, BML

P.S. There is ONE piece left of the ELBOGEN iron.
If you are inter-
ested, please contact us for
details.
