 Greetings all,
While I am looking foreword to seeing everyone in
 Tucson
I must admit that with the combination of increased
 overhead
and a HUGE lack of response to requests for entries in the
 auction,
it is entirely possible this will be the final Tucson
 Meteorite Auction.
Perhaps it has run its course. Personally, I hope not.
 While it is
A LOT of work, it is, at least for me, a LOT of fun - and
 it has
Always seemed to be a lot of fun for all who attend.
 HOWEVER:
Deadline for minimum commission entries is in two
 days
And I have 7 entries (usually, by this time I have 70 or
 80). I
Have to sell about $25K worth of specimens just to brake
 even,
so, this is looking dismal as the sponsor of the event. It
 is always
Possible tons of entries will come in at graduated fee
 rates as
The event grows nearer and nearer, but that has never been
 the
Case in the past. At least 75% of the items tend to be
 in and
up in the on line catalog by now.
Now, this will still make for an exciting auction,
 as there
Will undoubtedly be at least a few more entries and, most
 important
To the bidders, there will be plenty of room to allow for
 all the
late entries, many of which I have turned down in the past
 and
most of which turn out to be large whole Stones Irons
 with
no minimum - so, buyers will have a field day.
Also, Jerry Armstrong's lecture should be very
 meaningful - so
Much so that I am hoping to have him audio tape it for me
 so I
Don't miss it, myself. So, while THIS auction will go
 on, it is
Looking like it will be a large financial loss which I can
 take only
Once. If so, then, of course, this will be the 10th and the
 final.
Not to worry if you are a buyer, as you will have a ball,
 no doubt:
Jerry's lecture, Twink's Gold Bason Birthday Cake,
 food and
Open bar with a hundred or more meteorite buddies tends to
 Make for a great time.
I suppose it is entirely possible people are going
 to flood me
With entries of high quality with no minimums over the next
 few
Weeks or so, but I am not holding my breath. On the other
 hand,
People seeing how few entries there are may realize their
 piece(s)
Will be in higher demand, so, feel more inclined to enter
 specimens.
Those that are thinking of submitting can still get
 the lowest
Possible fee by submitting a list of the entries in the
 next 48 hrs
Even if they have yet to take digital photos - I will
 extend the
Deadline for photos on a person by person basis.
Please submit high quality pieces only, as $10 and
 $20 items
Are not going to keep the doors open. If you enter 10 or 20
 items,
some at the low end are fine, of course.
I hope I am wrong and have a flood of work over the
 next
 Couple of weeks.
 Best wishes, Michael

[meteorite-list] Announcement

2008-10-15 Thread Ma Lan
Hello list,

Firstly, i say thanks to all of the friends who remind me of the following info,

A man who claimed himself as one of my friends is planning to sell Zunhua
fragments. He advertised his stones by using photos from my website. His AD
post are the following,

http://illinoismeteorites.com/yabb/YaBB.pl?num=1223904071

http://illinoismeteorites.com/yabb/YaBB.pl?num=1223987750

Now, i make a declaration to all of you,

1) I don't know this man;
2) I have NOT given any permission to anyone to use the photos of my website as
of today. The photos he used were stolen from my website;
3) Any loss from deals with this person has nothing to do with me after you
read this declaration.

Again, thanks to all who informed me of this matter. I will send my thanks
letter to you later one by one.

Best to all,

Now 16779 emails are still left to be unread since i subscribed to the amazing

Maybe, there is something wrong with your mail box. I guess.

Hi all a while back I bought a stone that was supposed to be
 Nantan on
E bay it was actually a pretty good fake. They had added
 coloring to
make it look rusty and a magnet really stuck to it. So I
 stuck it on
the saw thinking it might just be a ball of rust, well as
 soon as it
started cutting it turned the everything a reddish color.
 When I
finished the cut and looked at it, it was stone not iron at
 all.I
would be surprised if it is not hematite. So I contacted
 the Chinese
dealer and told them all of this and after a couple
 attempts to
satisfy me will some discount or a better deal next time. I
 filed a
case with Pay pal and demanded a full refund, and that they
 stop
selling these lumps of rock as meteorites. I do not know if
 they ever
really stopped but I see they are back to their same old
 tricks again,
except this time I know that they know they are committing
 fraud. Does
that make any difference? Is there anything we can do?

 Michael All,
As a PS to that last note, I want to defend
 Aziz Habibi, from whom I
purchased this stone shortly after it was recovered in the
 first batch that
Mohammed Zeroual acquired not long after the fall. I have
 no doubt
whatsoever that this was at least indeed the main mass at
 that time, and not
even rumors of anything larger surfaced until earlier this
 year. He did not
tell me what I wanted to hear by any means, as this was
 simply fact at that
time. For those to whom it is important to acquire main
 masses (and there
are obviously several collectors in this regard, of which I
 am one
occasionally), there is an inherent and understood risk of
 an early
acquisition by virtue of the possibility (even probability)
 that larger
specimens will later be recovered. It is what it is...

Sorry, but not the main mass of Bassikounou, I have seen
 photos of a 70 +
kilo complete stone in Morocco, even made an offer on it.
The Moroccans are very good at telling you want you want to
 hear in order to
sell you a meteorite. I got tired of the endless BS over
 there, have not
been back in two years, will not likely ever go back for
 meteorites again.
 Incredible stone though.

 How would you then feel

I'm sorry in advance if I'm off base, way out

all I can say is it is a shame when you have a list
 comprised of hundreds of

to share and communicate with one another (hence why a
 list like this exist in
the first place, correct?), but don't seem to want
to reach out when a time
like this comes upon us to help one of our
own !!! I know times are
getting harder financially , especially maybe here in
the US for a lot of us,
but still many of us are finding it possible to still
 invest and spend on
ourselves and indulge our hobbyist desires and whims,
 so why then can't some
of you ,if not all, offer something to show your true
 care, compassion, and
concern, not just for another human being, but for one
 of us for goodness
  sakes!

Again, I know I will probably receive some distasteful
 responses due to my
putting my nose where maybe a lot of you feel it may
 not belong, but it is
rather disgusting to see talk always going on about
 what's for sale, what I
want, what can I acquire, while rarely anything is
 mentioned about Gary's
plight save for our resident angel, Maria! It looks
 like some basic plain old
greed and self indulgent type behavior to me! This is
 why we find so much

Hi list, Check this rock out. It is eBay # 320275545235
 and it is offered
 at one million $.

It looks like a slice of concrete but what do I know.

Speaking of which, I just took a photo of a dynamite
 meteor wrong. It is a
piece of concrete that was freshly coated in tar with a
 broken face.
Surprisingly eye catching. Both the parking lot and this
 stone look great!

Email me if you would get a kick out of this photo.

Re: [meteorite-list] Fwd: How many meteorite dealers are there?

2008-07-11 Thread Ma Lan
Hi listees,

If the dealer, collector, dealer-collector or collector-dealer are defined as
prior discussion, the question left for us is, HOW MANY?

Nobody knows a true number of them worldwidely. But i can provide an estimate
number of Chinese dealers, collectors, dealer-collectors or whatever. According
to my experience and instincts, the number of China men related to deal or
collecting of meteorites is 80-100 or so. Most of them do activities within
China only.

 Good evening list,

In my mind, nobody can give a true number of meteorite
 dealers.

Asume that we are talking only about professionals. Are
 they all meteorite
dealers? I think no! You can sell a meteorite only, if you
 have the sureness
that the piece is a meteorite. Otherwise you are a mineral
 seller (dealer).

 And that is the problem!

There is no gapless tracking information about the most
 (small) items.

 1. If a piece of rock contains chondrules it must not be a
  meteorite
because some complex sediments or some porphyric contain
 chondrule-like
 pebbels

 2. igneous rock may have a fusion crust different in color
 of its interieur,

 3. Haematite-Magnetite clusters can show on a polished cut
 a hexagonale
 texture like Widmanstaetten

 4. Regmaglypte-like buckles can be on a piece of metal of
 a nade from WWII
 time

 5. to be the member of IMCA or other parties gives not the
 certitude for the
buyer, that he will buy a meteorite.

Normally, if the gapless tracking is interrupted, a new
 certificate must be
produced to start a new gapless tracking for the item. But
 this is not given
 in the market.

So, if you have found a number of meteorite dealers,
 devide this by the
number of fingers you have. The result may be an estimated
 value with a certain
 trueth.

After beginning collecting meteorites, I bought a lot of
 rebbish stuff for
expensive money. Now I have my own small LAB for physical,
 chemical and
petrological researches. This gives me some sureness that
 the seller from whom I
buy might be a true METEORITE DEALER.

Why is it a complete stone since it fell in a hammer way? No burning signs

Holland is a small country so if something happens,
 meteorite related,
people know where to find you.
We get many reports about a possible hammer here and there
 and since we
only have four meteorites in history so far we don't
 get that shaky
anymore since we know it's a tough one to get our fifth
 spacerock.

This time a man called a bit in panic, telling us he heard
 a loud bang
yesterday late afternoon and found this piece stuck next to
 his window in
a plastic siding. After sending us these first pictures it
 looks quite
scary, eventhough I realize it probably should have plunged
 much deeper
 after impact but still..

Another thingthese folks live on a farm totaly isolated
 from traffic.

 Opinions welcome folks...

[meteorite-list] Wanted: Jilin weighted not less than 1 kg

2007-03-02 Thread Ma Lan
Hi list,

Wanted: one or two pieces of Jilin, weighted not less
than 1 kg. Slice or uncut.

Note on payment method:

I refuse to employ the payment method of international
wire transfer because it is not the safest way for the
transaction; Meanwhile, i can not use paypal to pay
you because my funds can not be added to paypal
(Paypal does not accept Chinese bank accounts).

Like my pallasites transaction before, i will use the
payment method as bellow:

Thanks for the advice from the China Bank in Beijing:
i will employ the C/L method to deal with the
transaction. This method needs a contract between you
and me first, and then the China Bank in Beijing will
issue me a ceritificates of credit and i put the money
into China Bank in Beijing. After that, the American
Department of China Bank will notify you to start the
shipping of the pieces. If the shippment is
successfully done and i sign for the delivery, then
the American Department of China Bank will notify you
again, to withdraw the funds from them. This means the
China Bank is the third man between you and me. I
think this is the safest way for me to process the
tansaction.

If you agree with me and have large size Jilin on
hand, please offer me a reasonable price off-list. I
will contact you further. Thanks.

Best regards to all

I think you should report an unpaid item to eBay

Hi Michael and List,

Pity that three pieces of nantans (57, 58, 59) were
sold for just 2.5 cent per gram, much cheaper than any
other meteorites. I don't know whether it's cheaper
than a piece of pure iron. Wondering why we still call
them meteorites since they are equal to meteowrongs
from the point of the price. Pity again.

Interesting stories. Thanks, Pamela.

Here is one from China.

to make an identification first. The identification
needed a cutted slice weighted 30 grams or so, then

slice. Jesus, i declined.
