[meteorite-list] eBay Trickery - How to exclude China from search results

2024-01-18 Thread Michael Gilmer via Meteorite-list
Hi Listees and Collectors,

A long time ago, eBay gave you more options for filtering a seller's
location in the results.

Now, you can search the US, North America, Worldwide, or within a
specified mile-radius distance. You no longer have an option to search
by country or to easily exclude China from results. Ordo you?

I used to like searching just European dealers, but if you try that
now, your only option is to select "worldwide" and wade through a ton
of Chinese listings.

I found a way around this by deconstructing the URL of a given set of
search results.

Let's try it.

I searched for "meteorite" with "US Only" selected for the item
location. The URL of the results is :
https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2334524.m570.l1313&_nkw=meteorite&_sacat=0=nc&_odkw=meteorite+-tektite&_osacat=0&_sop=10_PrefLoc=1_All=1

A lot of junk there that is not of interest to us. But, notice the
string of characters "PrefLoc" - this stuck out to me. PREFerred
LOCation methinks. The value is set to "=1", so I started changing
this number.

Apparently, the following numbers are valid :

0 = no change?
1 = US
2 = Worldwide
3 = North America
4 = no change?
5 = EU
6 = China
7+ = error

Changing the "=1" to "=5" brings back only items located in Europe
with no Chinese listings!

Any number higher that 6 results in an "invalid item location" error.

Enjoy!

[meteorite-list] New study uses Tardigrades to locate and recover Micrometeorites

2023-04-01 Thread Michael Gilmer via Meteorite-list
A new University of Portwenn study has demonstrated the viability of
using tiny organisms to recover micrometeorites from small puddles of
water.

Scientists claim the most difficult part of the process was training
the tardigrades to discriminate between micrometeorites and
micrometeorwrongs. Dr. Bamford revealed that stubborn tardigrades kept
bringing back grains of magnetite hoping for a reward...

Re: [meteorite-list] Most confirmed falls in a year?

2023-03-24 Thread Michael Gilmer via Meteorite-list
Interesting and informative responses. Like Mr. Lyon said, I would
think the modern world would provide for increased detection and
recovery rates. But Rob makes some very good points about the
outdoor-culture of the world in the 1930's compared to now. Light
pollution is also a factor for visual detection.

So, 1933 is the reigning champion. We have come relatively close a
couple of times, and I would expect that record will be broken in the
coming yearsor will it stand for 100 years or more?

For those keeping track, the number of classified/confirmed falls
since the year 2000 :

2023 : zero, but four are pending.
2022 : 5 (six if you count "Junction City" GA which is still a pending
classification)
2021 : 8
2020 : 13
2019 : 8
2018 : 14
2017 : 8
2016 : 12
2015 : 9
2014 : 7
2013 : 8
2012 : 10
2011 : 7
2010 : 7
2009 : 8
2008 : 11
2007 : 9
2006 : 6
2005 : ZERO (one, if you count "Montney" Canada, which was recovered,
not classified)
2004 : 7
2003 : 9
2002 : 9
2001 : 5

[meteorite-list] Most confirmed falls in a year?

2023-03-18 Thread Michael Gilmer via Meteorite-list
Hi Listees,

I was recently wondering, what year has the most confirmed witnessed falls?

I have been closely following falls since the year 2000, and according
to my records we have a few contenders in recent years. I am thinking
one of these must be the most.

2018 has 15 falls, but two of them are not official (HaH 346, aka
Ghadamis, was classified as a find) and a fall over Pakistan was not
recovered or recorded. This leaves 14 classified falls in a 12 month
period :

Oct 28, 2018 - Ksar El Goraane (H5 chondrite) : Morocco

I wouldn't take anything seriously if it's published by that outlet.

traveling to and from the show and how lodging could be handled.
Traveling and lodging present their own inherent risks.

Or, they could just move the show to Florida where the governor is a
science-denier and business is open as usual. A lot of people down
here are acting like nothing is happening. Events, parades, parties,
sporting events with fans in the stands, the whole nine yards. Of
course, the hospitals are filled to the rafters and the morgues are
overflowingso there's that.

Stay safe!

Re: [meteorite-list] Who sold their collection to a pawn shop?

2020-12-01 Thread Michael Gilmer via Meteorite-list
Hi John and List,

I never thought to cross-reference these with the Met Bull. Good
detective work there. The numbers just don't add up. Something is
suspect there - or "sus" as the kids say now. LOL.

Occasionally you'll see these pawn brokers or antique/collectible
dealers offer a meteorite or two, but you don't often see an entire
collection of larger and more interesting pieces from a seller like
this. Meteorites clearly aren't their speciality, so the pawn shop is
just probably passing along whatever info came with the specimens when
they received them.

What strikes me is (you alluded to the same) is that a collection of
this size and quality is wasted on a pawn shop. Who takes a collection
like that to the corner pawn shop? The seller could have done a lot
better selling it first-hand to collectors and not going through a
pawn broker that is going to lowball you on the sale. I'd think that
any collector who built a collection like that would be savvier than
walking into a pawn shop and plopping them on the counter for a quick
sale.

But, who knows? Somebody might have needed money fast for legit
reason. Or, maybe they are stolen. Or maybe the story is stranger than
that. Just seeing all of those meteorites for sale by a pawn shop made
me curious. I've been watching them for a couple of weeks now, and
more specimens keep being offered.

Buyer beware.

Best regards,

MikeG

This eBay seller, Loyalty Pawn, has been offering some higher-end
meteorites lately - many of them. These are not the typical meteorites
you see occasionally offered by this type of seller. This is obviously
somebody's collection being sold piecemeal. Does anyone know who this

Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorite Crashes into Indonesian Man's Home, Turns Him into a Millionaire

2020-11-19 Thread Michael Gilmer via Meteorite-list
Hi Tom and List,

It's funny how the media always uses the highest per-gram price they
can find on the web and then multiply that times the entire weight of
the meteorite. The result is an astronomical value that is usually
nowhere close to what the specimen would be worth on the collector
market. I seriously doubt the finder made over $1,000,000 USD for that
wonderful stone.

Not to diminish the special nature of this meteorite or the
circumstances of the fall. It's a spectacular thing regardless of what
retail value the bloggers arbitrarily attach to it for clickbait
purposes.

Best regards,

[meteorite-list] Algerian Meteorites

2020-11-15 Thread Michael Gilmer via Meteorite-list
At the risk of sounding like Jerry Seinfeld - What's the deal with
Algerian meteorites these days?

For years, we heard again and again that Algerian meteorites were not
legal. Wholesalers went out of their way to fudge the provenance on
these meteorites - "laundering" them to make it appear that they came
out of Morocco instead of Algeria.

Ten years ago on May 01. 2010, the "Breja" meteorite fell over
Algeria. It quickly hit the collector market and there was some
chatter about it, but then it was forgotten a little over a year later
when the Tissint fall grabbed all of the attention. The potential
classification of Breja was pushed to the back burner and we rarely
heard about it any more after that.

A few years later, I inquired about it to a couple of well-placed
dealers, and I was told that the classifier-scientists wouldn't touch
Breja because it came from Algeria. One institution in England
straight up refused to look at it or classify it because of it's
origin.

So, here we are 10 years later and Algerian meteorites are popping up
all over the Bulletin. Not an update goes by that we don't see one or
more Algerian meteorites being classified. What changed? Did the law
in Algeria change? Did institutional policies change? And if so, when
is this obscure meteorite going to be finally classified?

Best regards,

MikeG

Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorite 'gold rush' after meteor falls over Prescott, Arizona

2020-09-24 Thread Michael Gilmer via Meteorite-list
I guess with the increase in visibility of meteorite hunting, the
increase of online data resources available, and the increased numbers
of people hunting, some degree of silence is to be expected.

In the past, there was a lot of chatter on the List around a new fall.
There was the usual armchair hunters who would not go in person, but
had things to say and contribute to the effort in an indirect way.
Then there were the usual globetrotting hunters who would be on the
next flight or at the car rental agency before the news had even hit
the List. Everybody talked about it, but nobody was specific. Nobody
said exactly where they were going or how they were going to conduct
their hunting activities, but there was news and daily nuggets of info
for the world of spectators on the List.

I guess I am an old man shaking his fist and yelling at the clouds.
I've been on Facebook, and I know a lot of meteorite discussion goes
on there, so maybe this new fall is making some noise over there. I
don't know because I don't use FB any more.

Well, that's it. I'll keep talking to myself and the handful of
old-timers who still answer me, and maybe some others will
occasionally chime in. I'd love to see this place regain a little
steam and become a watering hole again.

So, is this a confirmed fall? Has anyone found meteorites yet?

The lack of chatter regarding new falls on the List is something
relatively recent. I'm not used to this level of silence after a
potential new fall. Has Facebook stolen all the thunder? If so, that's

Re: [meteorite-list] 2021 Tucson show!

2020-09-20 Thread Michael Gilmer via Meteorite-list
Wow. Crazy, that they are going to host a big public event during a
pandemic. I mean, we all need the distraction, but I just wouldn't
feel safe in close proximity with all of those travelers around. And I
expect we'll see fewer vendors this year as foreign dealers avoid the
US because we are a hotspot and the epicenter of the pandemic.

Be careful out there folks and hopefully there is a vaccine available
by the time the show starts.

As per usual, I will be attending from afar.

Best regards and stay safe,

[meteorite-list] Ad : Sikhote Alin, Campo Irons, Chwichiya 005, Zhob, Ungrouped Achon, Gatuto, and more.

2020-09-04 Thread Michael Gilmer via Meteorite-list
Hi Friends and Collectors,

New meteorite offerings available. Many types and pieces for all
budgets. It's a long list, so take a look. :)

Highlights :

CHIWICHIYA 005 - If you missed out on the new carbonaceous CO3,
Chwichiya 005, then I have some new specimens available. For those of
you with microscopes or jeweler’s loupes, this one is a treat – it is
absolutely loaded with tiny chondrules.

SIKHOTE ALIN – I have two new individuals available, including a
spectacular A-grade piece that is covered in regmaglypts.

CAMPO DEL CIELO – I have some new cuts available, including pieces
with silicates and inclusions.

OTHERS – be sure to look over the complete list. There is a nice piece
of Jiddat al Harasis 073 with crust, and a very nice nugget of NWA
4492 pallasite. There is also a large new piece of Al Haggounia Melt
Rock and some nice sub-gram pieces of the new ZHOB hammer fall from
Pakistan. Lastly, there are some nice pieces left over from last
week’s sale that are not brand new, but they are “newish” and those
specimens are shown at the very bottom of this list.

As always, use coupon code “metlist” at checkout for 20% OFF your
entire purchase.

FB invented none of those things and does not have a monopoly (yet) on
any of them. There are plenty of other apps and venues that offer live
video, photos, etc. One can easily upload photos to a cloud account or
website and link to them on this List. One can easily host a live feed
on numerous streaming platforms and link to them here. That is how it
used to be done, before FB came along and sucked all the oxygen out of
 the room.

For example, people would upload their Tucson or Ensisheim pics to
Photobucket, Flickr, or their website and then link them here. It just
involves a couple of extra clicks to bypass FB entirely for this
 functionality.

Over the years, I have seen this list wax and wane with activity. I
hope it will recover from this recent dry spell. I would argue that
this list is not obsolete, just suffering from a case of widespread
psychosis that somehow Zuckerberg's playground is better than the
 medium itself that created it.

And there you go.

You don't care. Enough said.

It doesn't matter what the ownership of that site believes, just as
long as they give you a handy platform to post meteorite photos.

Nice priorities there. Get off your high horse.

I'm done.

Hi Marcin,

I don't buy on Amazon, I don't own any Apple products, I own a dumb
flip-phone, and my PC runs on Linux.

I walk the walk. Stop making generalizations. Not all Americans are
dumbasses or hypocrites.

The rest of your points I do not take issues with. But, I am also not
the one calling another's views "bullshit" or labeling Americans with
a broad brush about being hypocrites when ordering Amazon stuff on
their iPhones or using Microsoft at home. Some of us are cutting these
immoral and unethical companies/services out of our lives to the best
of our ability.

HI Roberto,

I love ya man, but I gotta tear this post apart. LOL.

"Thankfully, we all have the freedom to choose where to post and engage with

If Zuck had his way, we wouldn't have this freedom.

" I use Facebook. Facebook has features that email will never have
> (video, live feeds, pictures, etc)."

"However, I am grateful that it is still available for those of us who cannot
> or will not change with the times. "

If the times are changing to an online world where Facebook, Amazon,
and Google control everything, then count me out. I'll fly my Luddite
flag proudly.

" I believe those members have valuable
> insight into meteorites and their history and I would sad to lose what could
> be gained from them because they cannot or choose not to grasp how to use
> Facebook or other social media platforms."

Indeed, it would be sad. And that is exactly what FB and Zuck are
trying to do - put venues like this out of business and gobble up
their audiences. Oh, I grasp FB and how to use it. And I have an
active presence on some non-Facebook platforms. My apparent beef is
not with social media itself, it is with Facebook and it's policies.
Ello and Mastodon are better than FB all day long and twice on
sundays.

"At the end of the day, some will move to Facebook and join the rest of us,
> while others will stay here (until the number of people that are left here
> is so small that it is really just an archive). "

I was the rest of us. When I first joined FB in early 2009, there was
exactly one large-ish meteorite group and just one or two other
dealers actively selling in other groups outside that one. We were
pretty lonely for a while and I was one of those people (like you)
singing the praises of social media and Facebook. Then everybody
started coming to FB and the List started getting quieter and quieter.
And FB started getting crazier and crazier, and then the algorithms
kicked in, and then Zuck took off his mask and showed his true colors.
You wanna roll with that guy, despite knowing what he's about?

Well, as long as Art keeps the lights turned on (so to speak), I am
going to try to help keep this List going. All of the content I used
to post on FB will now go here - new fall reports, met bull updates,
research links, articles, original essays, *links* to photos, etc.

Art > Zuckerberg.

Met-List > Facebook.

No matter what ends up happening, the above two statements will always
remain true, even if FB gobbles up the online world and this list
becomes the Ozymandias of meteorite discussion.

Best regards and stay safe!

Re: [meteorite-list] Meteoritical Bulletin Main Mass photos

2020-06-14 Thread Michael Gilmer via Meteorite-list
Hi Marcin,

I used FB for about 11 years and just got tired of it and the
atmosphere. I had a good run there for about the first five years.
Then a long period of love-hate relationship with it. Then it just
soured and I saw no reason to keep it going. The long slow stagnation
of this list has been painful to watch. There used to be so much
active discussion on a variety of planetary science topics. So many
eloquent contributors have drifted away or gone silent over the years.
Where is Sterling Webb? Where did Ron Baalke's clockwork posts go?
What happened to the buzz of activity that would happen after a new
fall? Much of it went to FB. And why? For photos? People are free to
link to a Flickr, Google, or other cloud service to share their
photos. Uploading photos to the cloud or a website takes the same
amount of time and effort as uploading to FB. The only different on a
text-only list is the necessity of clicking a link and opening a new
browser tab/window.

My point is, FB is a creeping insidious giant gobbling up more and
more internet real estate and bandwidth. And it's motives (from the
top) are not benign. We need more independent venues like this one as
alternatives to the monolithic corporate playground offered to us for
"free".

I am sorry you think this is paranoid bullshit. There are a lot of
facts out there on the web about Zuckerberg, his politics, and his
motives. Google Cambridge Analytica or just Zuckerberg in general and
read some articles about his business practices and character. It's
something I choose not to be a part of. And I am not doing it out of
some sense of activism, thinking I will somehow change FB by leaving.
Indeed, I am leaving to keep it from changing me. I am better off
without it and I am thankful we have the Met-List and other forums to
talk about meteorites in.

Best regards,

MikeG

Hi Marcin,

I did not mean my reply to sound aggressive or personal towards you. I
have always liked you and never had a problem with you personally. I
just don't like Facebook (or Zuckerberg) and the increasing stagnation
of this fine mailing list is a direct result of social media sites
like FB siphoning away all of the online oxygen. Facebook seeks to
control information and discourse - a monolithic entity answerable to
nobody that exploits it's userbase as a resource to enrich itself. It
does this without regard to the collateral damage done to privacy or
civil rights. All the while, FB is doing nothing original or
innovative. Chatting, posting, groups, and every other functionality
of FB are things we can do elsewhere. We don't *need* Facebook. It
needs us.

This List introduced me to the meteorite world. It brought me to the
dance, so to speak. And after many years of playing the social media
field, I have come back home to my high-school sweetheart, the
Met-List.

A lof of other collectors and dealers still congregate on FB and many
do quite well with sales. That's fine and I wish them success in what
works for them. I was one of the first handful of meteorite people to
become active on FB back in 2009 and now I am not the first to pack up
and leave that venue. I probably won't be the last. I've already
noticed that some List members are not very active on FB any more.
Maybe it's for the same reasons or they have their own reasons. But, I
think it's high time to get this mailing list rolling again. FB has
stolen the thunder for too long. The Met-List and FB don't have to be
mutually exclusive and both can co-exist. But, if Zuck and FB had
their way, venues like this mailing list would be trampled into
silence or absorbed into the Borg-like collective that is Facebook and
Amazon.

To each their own, but long live the List!

Hi Marcin and List,

Yes, the List has been quiet lately and part of that is because
Facebook is strangling other venues. I don't see that as a good thing.
This List is far more preferable (IMO) than an invasive venue that
spies on your every move, filters your feed with restrictive
algorithms, takes ownership of your content, and engages in behavior
that is destructive to civil discourse. I deleted my Facebook account
and couldn't be happier about it.

Starting very soon, I will doing my part to re-invigorate this List. I
will start posting regular updates with the latest Met Bulletin
approvals and other content that I used to waste on Facebook.

These new offerings are very old 19th-century falls with historical
significance. There are the first two CM falls (Cold Bokkeveld and
Nogoya), a howardite fall from WWII (Kapoeta, with Haag provenance),
and the second-ever diogenite fall (Shalka). I also acquired some
small fragments of the Martian shergottite NWA 6963. All of these are
available as micromounts with labeled gemjars. My supply on these is
extremely limited and I don't forsee getting any more of these
localities any time soon - indeed, this is the first time I have
offered these falls in over 12 years of collecting and dealing.

As always, use coupon code "metlist" at checkout for 20% OFF your order.

Hi Rob and List,

Both of my trips involved two full days of searching each and about a
day of driving around. So, I have close to a week invested already in
these hunts. My next trip will be another two days minimum, maybe an
extra day or two if we actually find anything.

Hi Rob and List,

I can attest to the difficult terrain. I certainly picked a doozie for
my first meteorite hunt. Even though I have hiked much of Florida's
forests and backwoods, I usually avoid the swampy areas. I did not
have the luxury of avoiding swamp with this hunt. I brought my
hip-waders and managed to reach a few dry places that were surrounded
by water, but nothing was found. I am heading back before the end of
April for one last college try before I hang it up.

Did Arkansas Steve find anything?

Osceola30°27.16’N, 82°27.25’W
Florida, USA
Confirmed fall: 2016 Jan 24
Classification: Ordinary chondrite (L6)

History: (Mike Hankey, Larry Atkins, Laura Atkins, Josh Adkins,
Brendan Fallon, Robert Matson, Marc Fries) On Sunday Morning 24
January at 10:27 EST (15:27 UTC) a large daytime fireball streaked
across the sky in northern Florida. Over 100 eyewitnesses reported the
event to the American Meteor Society (Event 2016-266), describing a
white sparkling head and plume of white smoke left behind. Fireball
researchers Marc Fries and Rob Matson, found the American Meteor
Society witness trajectory intersected with a group of radar returns
that appeared shortly after the fall. The radar returns were strong,
found at multiple altitudes and located on multiple stations: KJAX,
KVAX and KTHL. Larry Atkins was the first on the scene. Mike Hankey
arrived 5 days after the fall with Brendan Fallon and joined Larry and
Laura Atkins in the hunt. On the 6th day, Mike Hankey found the first
stone at 8.5 g on the eastern edge of the primary radar return. Within
2 hours Larry Atkins found the second stone (18.5 g) directly under
the radar. The next day, two more stones were found: a 5.5 g stone by
Laura Atkins and a 48.5 g stone by Mike Hankey. Six days later over 2
miles away from the first find, an 839 g mass was found by Josh Adkins
and Brendan Fallon. A week after that, Larry Atkins found the last
stone, weighing 75.5 g. In total 6 stones were found over a three week
hunting period for a total weight of 990.5 g.

Physical characteristics: Thin, well formed shiny fusion crust covers
the exterior of four of the stones, while two of them, the 43 g and
the 839 g are matte black. This is likely due to submersion in wet
sand and/or water prior to recovery. Some small rust spots are evident
on some of the stones as well. Small regmaglypts are present on the 43
g and the 839 g stones, and the remaining stones are irregularly
shaped with little to no orientation. Some chondrules are visible
through the crust. The interior of the meteorites are slightly
darkened due to shock. Shock veins are present, some of which are
black while others are filled with metal, appearing as long "strings"
up to 3 mm long. Though most of the chondrules have been altered and
are not well defined, some rare, large chondrules up to 0.8 mm are
present.

Petrography: Plagioclase grains are up to 100 µm in size, consistent
with type 6. No maskelynite was found. There are numerous
chromite-plagioclase assemblages, consistent with moderately strong
shock. Chromite grains are fractured. Troilite is polycrystalline.
Metallic copper occurs as 2-µm-thick bands at the metal-troilite
interface in an opaque assemblage. The chondrules are recrystallized
and poorly defined. The only discernible chondrules are large ones,
800-1000 μm across; these are BO and PO textural types.

Geochemistry: Olivine Fa23.7±0.3 (n=21), Orthopyroxene
Fs20.2±0.2Wo1.6±0.2 (n=14). Also present are small grains of diopside:
Fs7.4 Wo44.9 (n=1). Plagioclase has a mean composition of Ab71.7±1.6
Or8.8±2.5 (n=8); the low Na and high K values are a result of shock.

Specimens: 21.8 g at UCLA

[meteorite-list] Ad: 30% OFF Storewide Sale, Raising Funds for One Last Meteorite-Hunting Trip to Osceola

2016-04-02 Thread Michael Gilmer via Meteorite-list
Hi Collectors and Listees,

After two unsuccessful trips to hunt the Osceola meteorite fall, I
have decided to make one last trip to the swampy strewnfield. We are
now over two months after the fall, and any specimens remaining in the
field will likely be covered in mud and very oxidized. I realize our
chances are slim to none, but one has to try, right? I don't get many
chances to chase a fall in my home state of Florida, so I am hoping
the third time is a charm.

For this weekend, I am offering a 30% OFF discount on everything in
the store - use coupon code "bigsale" at checkout.

I have a few new meteorite micromounts this week. There are also many
new minerals, fossils, and artifacts for you folks who like that kind
of stuff : Indian arrowheads, Bone Valley fossils, semi-precious
stones, shark teeth, etc.

All new specimens - http://www.galactic-stone.com/products/brand-new?pagesize=48
