Wow, they have pulled up some serious kilos of fragments! It seems the mass shattered on impact with the ice surprisingly. I'm glad they are recovering this material. I know what you mean Mike. I was thinking one honking big lump down there. On reflection though, I can imagine a couple of feet of ice giving as good as it gets at the collision speeds involved. Judging by the propensity of tiny bits this big one may well have been pretty beat up and fractured before impact. Drive a fast car flat out into a wall of ice like that and I'm pretty sure the leftovers would be pretty mangled. Yes, I was in that University in March in Yekaterinburg and saw those pieces in person. I met with Dr. Gresheky (sp) and had a great tour of the amazing laboratory facilities and saw hundreds of Chelyabinsk specimens found just after the fall. Shouldn't that fragment be much more rusted if it came from the bottom of the lake? I've seen ugly fragments on eBay that looked much worse, and they weren't sitting at the bottom of a lake for 6 months. ??? The thick mud at the bottom of Lake Chebarkul is surely very oxygen-poor. But, the stone will have been completely saturated now, like a sponge. So the minute they remove it from the mud, the oxidation will begin rapidly, unless they undertake measures to stabilize it. They use dry nitrogen to thaw Antarctic meteorites at NASA JSC. Maybe that would be worth doing for the truly museum grade pieces -- if there are any found in the lake. Carl Agee * Carl B.
