2007-02-08 Thread Mike Fowler
Mike Farmer,

This so much really needed to be done. Thanks for stepping up to the
plate, even though you may receive vocal criticism from some. I'm
sure those that are appreciative will out number those who oppose by
at least 10 to one, even if they aren't so vocal.

Thanks

2007-02-08 Thread Michael Farmer
Mike and everyone else, I do not want to be in the
middle of this. I am running a business at the show. I
did Al and Achim a favor (I thought) by reporting
stolen pieces. I did not know the firestorm that would
follow. I have had at least 50 requests for prices
from 50 people, I don't have time to deal with these
emails, so by taking the last 30 minutes to posts the
hammer prices should release me from any more emails
to me. Others in the room can compare prices they
wrote down. the rest is between the interested parties
and the Langs.
Michael Farmer
This should end my involvement in the dispute I hope.
Perhaps next year, people could just come to my room,
and pay the fixed price listed, it would be less
painfull!

[meteorite-list] Lang Auction - Chain of Events

2007-02-08 Thread Greg Hupe
Dear List Members,

Achim Karl asked me to post an email he received today from Iris Lang:

 -Ursprüngliche Mitteilung-
 Von: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
 An: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
 Verschickt: Do., 8. Feb. 2007, 10:45
 Thema: Tucson auction

 Dear Achim Karl,

After the show ended, Allan took the room apart and finally found the
 missing
meteorites. We had many absentee bids, and having two other people
 handling the
auction besides ourselves created some confusions. Please give him a few
 days to
get home and he will contact you as soon as possible.

 Best regards

Here is the chain of events of the Lang Auction:

Saturday February 3, 2007
The Auction

Monday February 5, 2007
The Act
Part One - Achim Karl told by Allan and Iris Lang his three lots were
stolen.
Part Two - The same three stolen lots were sold to two different bidders
for higher prices.

Thursday February 8, 2007
The Cover-Up
Achim receives email from Iris Lang claiming Allan found the stolen lots.

Lets see, Achim won three lots, was told they were stolen when he went to
pay for and take possession of them, these same three lots were then sold to
two other bidders for higher prices, and then three days later, after this
thread started, Achim receives an email stating Allan found the three lots.

So Peter, how do the final hammer prices Mike posted to the List compare to
what you were told you won the auctions for with your absentee bids of the
stolen lots?

It sounds to me like dirty hands trying to dig a deeper hole to bury this
self-imposed mess! Quite the web that has been woven...

Subject: [meteorite-list] a few other auction surprises

Hi Mike, list,

Mike's reported hammer prices will probably shed more shadow than light on
that famous auction.

While we are at trying to clear all points, here are some of my own
amazements.

I have put 11 absentee bids and four of them turned to be above the hammer
prices. These are:

Itemhammer ($) my bid ($)

19 Gorlovka 160 (Achim) 210
35 Marilia 610 710
52 Quenggouk180 260
60 Vernon Co266 260

1) Shouldn't have I been the winner or ??? (badly missing something!)

2) For other 6 items, my bids were logically lower than hammers. This is OK
(at least on my side)

3) But for the last item, here is the other surprise.
Iris Lang sent me the same letter as to Peter, about item N° 29, Khohar.
Here it is

Dear Zelimir Gabelica,
You won Lot # 29 Khohar for $495
Allan will be home within a week. Please contact him by e-mail to make
arrangment for payment. You can pay by check or credit card. Please add
shipping and handling cost.
Best regards
Iris Lang

Now Mike reports that this item was sold to Achim in room for $ 495 (which
is exactly my bid).
If Mike is corect, something really wrong here. Who is the winner ?
I dare hoping that Mike mixed the two winers but his statement seems so
strong. Any thoughts?

Unless I missed many rules or facts (not excluded), things are far from
being clear.
Are there other cases ?

Best,

Zelimir

Dear Listees:

I thought it might be helpful to mention that Allan and Iris Lang are
on their way home from the 2007 Tucson show, and probably cannot to
reply to posts regarding the auction at this time.

Since Allan has been a respected buyer and seller of meteorites for
more than thirty years, it might be a good idea for anyone with a
legitimate question about the auction to give him the benefit of the
doubt and contact him directly rather than speculating on the M-List.

Absolutely Geoff,

Anybody at the auction knew about the confusion the auctioneers had with the
absentee bids. If you weren't at the auction then you shouldn't suspect or
suggest there was any foul play ( Leave stuff like that for the idiot
illusionist from Austin, Texas ).
Doesn't make much sense either. The Langs did tremendously well with their
auction, Does it make any sense that they would lie about a theft to make a
few hundred bucks? No, it doesnt.
I have nothing but empathy for the Langs regarding this matter.
If you weren't at the auction then you really have no business making any
accusations.

Re: [meteorite-list] Lang Auction

2007-02-08 Thread Michael Farmer
U, Bob, unless you are a complete retard, then
these emails are as telling as it gets. Give me a
break already. The simple fact that the pieces were
reported as stolen and denied to the rightful owner
who was the high bidder in the room and the hammer
price closed on his last bid, then sold to other
people for more money, then today reported as found.
If you need help understanding this, then you are
dumber than I thought. The police were involved, as
well as the show owner at the Westward Look. There are
many things going on with other people that are not
public.
How dare you tell people who placed their bids as
absentee bidders to mind their own business! That is
above the pale. They placed their bids, which are
binding contracts, and it seems that virtually all of
them were either screwed out of their pieces, or
overcharged. What more can be said.

Sorry Mike,
Im just not inclined to believe every single word I read on this list.
FYI - On Sat 2/3/07 I was in one dealers room and asked him to see a

When I asked him, he said surprisingly Oh that's where it went. I thought
that had been stolen.
Excuse me for giving the Langs the benefit of doubt.

There were many people in the room Ryan, most people
wrote the hammer prices down. Tell me which lot #'s
you are interested in, and I will get you the
information. I am a little embarrassed right now, as I
was told by Al and Iris that the items were stolen.
Achim came to my room very upset saying that he wasted
his day at the auction since 50% of the items he won
were stolen from the display cases and he could not
get them even though he was the high bidder. I wanted
to help out since theives were hitting all over the
Tucson show, I assumed this was another episode. It
seems I am mistaken, the pieces were not stolen, just
sold outside the auction for more money.

[meteorite-list] Lang Auction Results

2007-02-07 Thread Mike Bandli
The auction was a bit of a mess and frustrating for some. This is just
speculation, but I have a feeling that some of the absentee bids were not
taken into account during the live bidding. It seemed there was a lot of
confusion here. Also, we do not know the hammer price on lots with multiple
absentee bids that were higher than the in-person bids because Lang wanted
to complete those lots after the auction (in order to speed things up).
Either way, I do remember Achim 'winning' those lots and believe he should
get them...

Kind regards,

2007-02-07 Thread Michael Farmer

Mike, that is not how an auction works. You cant sell
something, then go back to the absentee bidders and
figure out who won later, not during a live auction.
EVERY one of those items had a hammer closing price.
So if the price closed at $120.00, and the auctioneer
declares SOLD for $120.00, you cant go back later and
say that an absentee bidder actually bid up to
$350.00.
This is simple auction procedure. I will post my list
first thing in the morning. I have the hammer prices
for every last item.

[meteorite-list] Lang Auction

2007-02-07 Thread Mike Bandli

Michael,

I know and I agree with you. I do not agree with this procedure at all. I am
simply pointing out what could have happened and what I remember. I do
remember that some of the lot's hammers were not known, because Lang wanted
to finish them after the auction due to multiple absentee bids. Not good...

Kind regards,

Mike Bandli

Michael Farmer Wrote:

Mike, that is not how an auction works. You cant sell something, then go
back to the absentee bidders and figure out who won later, not during a live
auction. EVERY one of those items had a hammer closing price. So if the
price closed at $120.00, and the auctioneer declares SOLD for $120.00, you
cant go back later and say that an absentee bidder actually bid up to
$350.00. This is simple auction procedure. I will post my list first thing
in the morning. I have the hammer prices for every last item.

Re: [meteorite-list] Lang Auction Results

2007-02-07 Thread Martin Altmann
Hi list,

speculations are fun, but why don't we wait for that, what Lang has to state
to clear the mist?

The auction results all in all were enormously, in my eyes on average much
more expensive than regular dealer's prices, many pieces went at such crazy
results, that several dealers were standing there with open mouths, asking
themselves, what they had done wrong all the years before.

So I guess that Lang was more than content with that auction and even
smiled...
and therefore I'd suppose that one maybe could exclude, that later he
intentionally sold some of the minor pieces at a higher rate to third
persons.

Martin,
In Tucson.
Slowly packing the trunks.
Hey, we're so close to Mexico, should I really wrap in the Aldama(b) stones
from our table? Of course they are weathered, but nicely sized and if I say
3.5$/g or maybe 3$ for the largest, who could complain at such a low tkw?
Would have to look in the Catalogue, I guess it's below 1kg there, but all
in all it will be 2kg.

Dear Mike and List,
Does anyone know about Arizona auction laws and
licenses? I have found some information on the Web,
but not specifically for Tucson. It seems Arizona has
a licensing procedure for auctions and auction houses.

The auction was a bit of a mess and frustrating for
 some. This is just
speculation, but I have a feeling that some of the
 absentee bids were not
taken into account during the live bidding. It
seemed there was a lot of
confusion here. Also, we do not know the hammer
 price on lots with multiple
absentee bids that were higher than the in-person
 bids because Lang wanted
to complete those lots after the auction (in order
 to speed things up).
Either way, I do remember Achim 'winning' those lots
 and believe he should
 get them...

 Kind regards,

[meteorite-list] Lang Auction Results

2007-02-05 Thread Bob Evans
I have been to both. Don't have specific results.
However both auctions did really well, especially Al's. Some really low
value pieces sold high at Bloods auction.
So, get ready to pay substantially more for meteorites in the very near
future. In fact its already here.
The Moroccans were out of the good stuff.
Last year I found over a dozen oriented stonys, this year only one and I
PAID dearly for it.
