[meteorite-list] New fall in Kenya
We have a large new fall in Kerinyaga state, Kerugoya Kenya. 24 April 2020 20:00 hours. Chondrite. White, at least 15-20 kg known. Sadly heavy rains began the next afternoon and stones not recovered immediately are already exhibiting heavy oxidation. Save up your pennies folks. For a little background on how I got ahold of this fall so fast. I saw the Kenya fall on Friday night Tucson time, barely 7 hours after it happened in Kenya. I’ve been to Kenya 7 times, 3 for Thika fall in 2011 (60km from this fall. Four trips for Sericho Pallasite. I’ll call this fall Komboini for the moment. I called my contacts in Kenya immediately, one of whom arrived there Saturday evening less than 24 hours after the fall. He was rapidly buying material for me. I have the hammer stone (fell on a house in Komboini) and we removed the roof panel with the hole and even the tile floor that was shattered by the stone. The meteorite shattered on impact. Most of the stones you’ve all seen in the photos and video I have. Some you haven’t seen I have. Heavy rains started hours after the fall and any stones recovered after the rains began are heavily oxidized already. I assume the fall is an H5. Seems too high metal for an L but that’s also possible. Pieces will be available for sale next week. There will be enough to go around. As you can see I have some kilos. Many stones sadly were picked up and hammered to see what was inside them. Sad but will provide for lots of fresh fragments for collectors. Relax. I plan to make a coronavirus stay-at-home special offer to get pieces to everyone at very low cost. Money is hard to come by these days. There is a massive panic in Kenya with the Sericho crowd all selling and offering photos. Most of them can’t move because Kenya is locked down. Be warned that many are claiming to be there who aren’t there. Roads are blocked by military due to coronavirus lockdown and movement is difficult or impossible for most. My guy is high up in the government. He can move. I’m being offered stones by Moroccans that I already purchased. Beware of people offering pieces they don’t have in hand.Michael Farmer Sent from Yahoo Mail for iPhone __ Visit our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/meteoritecentral and the Archives at http://www.meteorite-list-archives.com Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com https://pairlist3.pair.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

$4300 difference in price for personal delivery? Wow. I saw very similar things with the Bingol/Saricicek fall in Turkey. There are still stones waiting to be sold by people who wanted prices far above what dealers and even collectors were willing to pay. Come to think of it I can buy Saricicek, a Howardite, even now for less than this supposed H5. Come on gentlemen. It is these kinds of games that really turn people off. Good luck. Re: [meteorite-list] New fall in hand. Aiquile Bolivia.
A few reasons, mostly relating to the excitement of the hunt in the altitude when you exert yourself ... increased heartbeat, breathing and full utilization of the lungs, thrill from a chase being lightheaded, especially for us coastal folk. And, if memory serves, for stones in particular,I think you could have them impacting 15-20% faster around 8000 feet. That means anything much larger than a basketball can be in supersonic free fall, though very dependent on orientation and shape. It makes witness accounts more spectacular with the less diffused sonic booms and then the ricocheting of them. So for me, yes, very special unless you have to spend your time just shopping around to buy from the local hunters and finders. Maybe not such a big deal at 6000 feet as over 8000 feet, so not another Carancas (altitude 12,000 feet, but Google that to be sure)... but the nice backdrop ought to have pick up the difference. OK, hurry up and put up the story and stones :-) and congrats to Greg and you on the successful recovery! Re: [meteorite-list] New fall, Nkayi Zimbabwe
Last week I noted that there were 9 instances of two meteorite falls occurring on the same day since 1865. I found my data on these so here they are: 1. Aug. 25, 1865 - Aumale, Algeria (L6) and Shergotty, India (Martian) 2. Aug. 28, 1925 - Ellemeet, Netherlands (Diogenite) and Lanzenkirchen, Austria (L4) 3. Aug. 8, 1933 - Sioux County, USA (Eucrite) and Repeev Khuyor, Russia (Iron) 4. Sept. 17, 1945 - Atoka, USA (L6) and Soroti, Uganda (Iron) 5. Sept. 21, 1949 - Akaba, Jordon (L6) and Beddgeler, Wales (H5) 6. Oct. 20, 1951 - Manych, Russia (LL3.4) and Yambo, Congo (H5) 7. Oct. 30, 1994 - Devri-Khera, India (L6) and Lohawat, India (Howardite) 8. June 21, 2002 - Kilabo, Nigeria (LL6) and Thuathe, Lesotho (H4/5) 9. March 1, 2009 - Carterville, USA (chondrite) and Nkayi, Zimbabwe (L6) Additionally, in two instances, falls occurred on the same day but in the same area, and are assumed to be from the same fall. They are: Sept. 26, 1939 - Glabggang, Indonesia (H5/6) and Selakopi, Indonesia (H5) Both fell near Bandung Nov. 13, 1952 - Galim (a), Cameroon (LL6) and Galim(b), Cameroon (EH3/4-an)Rubble Pile?? [meteorite-list] New fall in Germany 1.3kg Braunschweig
Hi list, there is a new fall in Germany, which I think was not posted yet in our list. (intense discussions in German met. forum) Some few facts: Ordinary chondrite (L6), still under classification. Fall in 23 or 24 April-2013 , ~2am local time. Only one eye-witness which saw the end of the bolide and heard one detonation later. One ear-witness who heard the bang on the ground while he was watching TV. Only one poor picture is available from a meteor camera due to a very cloudy night. 1.3kg fell directly into a parking place of a private house, hundreds of broken pieces scattered around, also to the road. Some were pulverised by cars. Fortunately most of them were recovered, by quick reaction of Rainer Bartoschewitz. Second larger piece (left one from picture 2) is now exhibited in Ries Crater museum, at least until Sept. 2013 (214,1 g major piece). The individual meteorite demaged the paving stones. (=hammer fall?) The recovery of the paving stones around the striking hole failed due to a complete structure change caused by the impact. (Their collapsed to sand grains, which was first not visible on the paving stones. There is a breathtaking picture of this in the museum) The nose cone-shape of the individual was reconstructed (inteligent guessing) by Karl Wimmer and shows that probably more individuals separeted from the main mass. (map with best estimation for a strewn field is available. So far no further finds known) Enjoy: http://www.braunschweiger-zeitung.de/lokales/Braunschweig/meteorit-fiel-in-braunschweig-vom-himmel-id990080.html See some of you soon in Ensisheim, Regards from Weil der Stadt, (birth town of Johannes Kepler) Thomas Kurtz __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteorite-list-archives.com Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

In other words, you have a heat-affected zone under the surface of the iron, and if you get a more volatile inclusion, it can be heated to the point that it vaporizes/expands, creating a small explosioncrater in the overlying soft/molten metal. This would explain the vast number of such craters seen on Franconia irons -- since those specimens contain large amounts of disseminated stony particles and troilite, it makes sense that they would contain a greater number of inclusions that might create such features (versus a relatively homogeneous Sikhote-Alin). The exception to this rule would be craters formed on shrapnel, but most of those supposed craters I've seen appeared to be exposures of where round (troilite) inclusions had been. The raised rims appeared to form from the shear/fracture propagating towards the weak point in the meteorite (the inclusion), creating a surface that gently sloped upwards to a smooth, round cavity. Re: [meteorite-list] NEW FALL
Hello Richard, All, With proper cleaning techniques, I have seen fine flow lines and delicate ripples, splashes, and flow-lines on the surfaces of several irons that had been weathered, but were somewhat restored to their former glory. Such features are only accompanied by rust when cleaning is incomplete or when the crust has been removed by oxidation. I'm not saying that irons should have all rust removed -- on the contrary, many irons look better uncleaned, but when considering Sikhote-Alins, one must look critically at the texture of the surface one is looking at to determine whether it consists of fusion crust covered by rust, underlying metal shaped by atmospheric entry, or iron oxides cemented to the crust or underlying metal. The 'splash craters' of which you speak always looked like patches of iron oxides to me. Some looked vaguely 'splashy,' but they were almost always surrounded by areas of rust and/or bare metal, which made me think they were the result of improper cleaning. My observations may be incorrect, but I've yet to see a convincing splash crater. Every feature I would call a 'crater' has had an upraised rim. [meteorite-list] New fall in China
Hi Martin, The man appeared on the video I know him very well, and is not the scientist. He is a collector like you and me. But he is very like to do some basic research on meteorites. The content of the video is just to show how he cut, grind the meteorite, and also he guess the meteorite classification is L5, shock stage is S2. Then he made a micro probe in a laboratary which is owned by Geological University in Beijing I guess. His resualt is found there is mica in the meteorite, but all of the final result should wait for the scientists. So long, Wu Dear Wu and list members, This broadcast seems to show the first analyses of the new meteorite. Unfortunately, I don't understand anything, but it's very nice to watch anyway. According to my source, this news missed most news sources. 100's of witnesses at lunch time saw this huge fireball and experts estimate hundreds of stones still on the ground, in the snow estimated from 5g to 20kg. Hello Jim, I am glad you reply the massage so fast. I had been in the falling place from 16th to 18th Feb. The county's name is Huangzhong, and about 50 Kg northwest of Xining City, so I accomodateed in Xining during the night, and drive to the falling area every day. There are 4 bigger pieces landed in 4 villages. The biggest one is 12.5kg individual, landed on the mountain top of Xiaosigou village; the second bigger piece 7.5kg,which is broken while landing, in Baiya village; the third piece less than 5kg also broken, landed in in a villager's houseyard,Hergey village;the fourth one landed on the concrete road of Yehong village, broken into many pieces, and cannot calculate the exact weight, but according to the crater, should be no less than 2kg. If you are not sure about the source of your information, I wish you will trust me. I'd been there myself. In the following link, please find some pictures, which I took in the falling area. But the copyright is reserved, please do not use it without my permittion. http://www.flickr.com/photos/49390711@N03/?saved=1 The classification of the meteorite should be L5 or L6, shock stage should be around 3, but everything we have to wait the final resault by the scientists. To some extent, I feel this shower is a little bit like Suizhou shower in 1986, or Yanzhuang Shower in 1993. There are only bigger pieces been found, and havn't seen any smaller individuals until now. What I can say is this shower is not like Juancheng 1997 fall, which has so many small individuals. Regards! Wu Email:wyh...@163.com Hi Wu! I had not seen this post you mention and your assumptions about my information source are not correct and the link you provided does not have the information I received. I do not know where the information I received from my source came from, other than China. However, I am glad you are sharing more information. As information comes in, many reports get twisted and pretty soon fact and fiction become one. It is my understanding that many stones have been recovered. 12.5kg, 10kg, 2- 5kg, 2.5kg and a 4.2kg. I do not know the originating source of this information. The news media in my area has not reported this event to the best of my knowledge and today is the first I had heard about it. A quick search of AP news did not indicate anything from China recently doing a search for 'meteor'. It was a quick non-advanced search. In regards to media, it has basically not been breaking news for what-ever reason. Has it been determined what kind of meteorites are being recovered? [meteorite-list] New Fall in China
Dear members, I am very appriciate that Martin put so many links regarding the new fall in Huangzhong, Qinghai province, China. I was in the falling area from 16th, to 18th Feb,and had collected the informaitons together with the pictures. I noticed there must be some mistake in the media reporting. Such as hundreds of meteorites were falling, that is not true! There are only 4 pieces were recovered until now, and except the biggest one, which is 12.5kg landing on a mountain top of Xiaosigou village, the other 3 pieces were all bronken while landing. what I have seen is there are hundreds of fragments, not individuals! And also the expert from Beijing Planetarium said he had found crystal things in the mitrix is also a big funny joke! There is one piece landed on the concrete road of Yehong village, and made a shallow crater (please see the photoes in the following link), and what the expert collected is a broken piece from the concrete road, and the crystal things he said should be the sand and quartz in the concrete. I have purchased several hundred grams of fragments, and also found there is some concrete pieces included, because their colors are very close and villagers cannot distinguish concrete pieces from meteorite fragments. Here is the link of my photoes, copyright is reserved, please do not use them without my permittion. http://www.flickr.com/photos/49390711@N03/?saved=1 If anyone who has the interests on any kind of information regarding this fall, please feel free to contact me. Hi Wu, thank you so much for your report and the pics - especially documenting the impact structures is utmost deserving! [meteorite-list] New Fall in China further information
Hi Gary, Yes, I had seen the news on your link on 17th Feb, and at that time I was still in Xining,Qinghai province. The expert appeared on the news is Dr. Miao Bingkui, he had been in Grove Mountains, Antarctic, for two times to search for meteorites. The big individual meteorite appeared on the news is the only uncovered individual of this meteorite shower, which is 12.5kg, and landed on the mountain top of Xiaosigou village as I had told you and other members several days ago. The other broken piece on the news was landed in Baiya village, and I had been to the crater to take photoes, get coordinates, searching and purchaing meteorite fragments. Some of my fragment were from this village. The following link is the Baiya Crater http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7062/6909517075_7c4f942fd7_m.jpg Until now I have not heared about if there is any new pieces had been found, I mean the total weight of this shower is still around 30kg. Some pieces such as appeared on the news are still in the villager's hand, and they offered at outrageous prices. they want to be milionaires by their meteorite pieces. The problem is the villagers lack the knowledge on how to preserve the meteorites, they simply use the plastic bag to cover the meteorites, and do not care whether the bag is wet or humid. I am sure the weathering stage of those local samples will be higher and higher. Best wishes! So a question: why is this being called a fall, when the web page says This new martian meteorite is possibly associated with a large fireball observed during day, around noon, in July 2011? Sounds like the fall status is still an open question. Or is there more to the story? Re: [meteorite-list] New fall...Mars / Nice inside too
You're right Jeff, I am very sorry, I was excited, and still excited anyway... I was there Tuesday, after receiving pictures the past week and when you saw the stones and talk with the nomads (with Marocan dealer translating) the reality of an observed fall is more than possible...anyway fall or not, this is a great meteorite for science ! By the way, I personnaly saw a few hundred grams of fragments and very few individuals. From my sources we are talking about a few hundred grams to a few kilos. But as I noticed previously there is enough material for science and collectors (considering the small meteorite market and the availabilty of many small fragments around 1g or less) but there aren't kilos and kilos as some other people are suggesting. [meteorite-list] New fall - Poland
Dear List Members, A new fall has just occurred in Poland: a hammer! Here is some information about the circumstanses of the fall: The meteorite fell on 30 April at 6 a.m. in Soltmany villige, near the town of Gizycko. The ~1kg stone hit the roof of a building and was discovered broken into a few pieces. This information about the fall comes from a Mr. Roman who called Andrzej Pilski from Frombork Astronomical Observatory. Andrzej Pilski immediately asked Woreczko and Wadi to go to the fall location, take photos, and ask eyewitnesses for reports, as well as to see the stone and obtain a sample for analysis. The classification will be done by professor T. Przylibski from the Wroclaw University of Technology. Frombork Observatory wants to buy meteorite for their museum.
