[meteorite-list] Perseids - clouds tonight
List, Went out about 9 last night to watch the Perseids. Got to see some fantastic orange colored very fast meteors go over. We only had a few clouds but nothing to obscure viewing. Then came the moon. Once it was almost south of us, that was it for the shower. I was all stoked to go out tonight to watch again, and I will but we have a lot more clouds tonight. If something show up tonight through the clouds, it will be something. Anyway, Perseids this year are quite a show, or at least last night they were. Greg, Michael, List, Glad to hear that many of you were able to enjoy the show. I spent three days up in the White Mountains, east of Bishop, CA, near the Nevada border. The area is home to the Bristlecone Pines - the oldest living things, at up to 4,000 years old. Being in the rain shadow of the Sierra Nevada, we didn't see a single cloud the whole time. The sky was very transparent, and dark enough that we were able to easily see the zodiacal light beginning around 3:00 or 3:30. We enjoyed plenty of DSO observing early on, when we weren't just sitting back watching for meteors. I didn't have a counting device, but I'd estimate we saw about 100 before midnight, and another 200 between midnight and 4:00. They seemed to be almost equally divided between bright ones with ion trails and faint ones without. Of the bright ones, almost half of them had persistent trains, visible over 60-90 degrees across the sky. The shorter ones probably spanned 10-15 degrees. We had a couple of long skippers, an orange firework that seemed to explode and then fall, and even a very bright one that might have qualified as a bolide. A great night, all in all. Friend and fellow photographer Dave Harvey has by day been upgrading the Telescope Control System on the 60 telescope on Mt. Lemmon, which used by the Catalina Sky Survey. During the night this week he's been out photographing the Perseid meteor shower. He has posted to his blog an image he made of the shower over the 60. A few people have commented privately about the length of exposure of the image. I know Dave was using an equatorial mount for his camera. Starting at about 10 o'clock, walking over the fields together with my dear wife, pretty cloudy sky with only a few windows to the stars and - yes indeed, 2 nice Perseids flashing silently in the West. One for each of us, that's not the richness of Aladin's cave, but we're happy about them and launched our wishes as fast and as silent as the meteors appeared and disappeared. Aladin couldn't have been luckier. Bernd, Last year Mary and I both saw one at the radiant. I thought there was some slight lateral movement. She said there was none. Only later did I vacillate between being scared that I (or she!) was a target and disappointed that these things have to burn up. Still a bright, warm afternoon here in SoCal. Hi Chis, You might see if you captured video of one that took place at 9:15 or thereabouts tonight. I watched it go from north to south or southeast a bit. It was west of Montrose. It was a spectacular thing to see with a long trail behind it. I'd call it a small fireball. I would be interested in knowing if you caught it on your cameras. Dear Carl: Thank you for those very kind comments. Sorry I was slow in writing back. I was too busy laughing at Mike Farmer's post claiming that somebody other than him was making the meteorite world look bad. That's a bit like Stalin complaining that there's too much violence. Anyway, regarding your question. Since our show is still being aired on a regular basis, there are no immediate plans to release it on DVD, but it is something we hope and expect in the future. And I'm pleased to report that there are many other exciting plans for the future of the show which will be announced in due course. Hopefully those who enjoy learning, meteorite science, and adventure television shows will continue to watch and enjoy it. Those who prefer to sit on their extremely large backsides and libel their betters will, doubtless, find some small pleasure in that too. Now I should also say that it may be tomorrow night for those of you who live ahead of Universal Time, in the Eastern Hemisphere... As I write this the date and time is 00:20 UT on August 12th, though the local time here in Tucson is 17:20 MST on August 11th, , so the standard peak is still 18 hours away, during the daytime tomorrow... Hello Robert, All, After a day of hunting, we spent the early evening tonight stargazing in the relative darkness (compared to Los Angeles) of the Mojave. All in all, I wasn't particularly wowed or disappointed. Wewatched from sundown until a bit after the moon rose (about 8-10pm), and I'd have to say that the best display was within half an hour of darkness. It was pretty spotty - started withseveral bright white meteors within a few minutes, along with a pretty spectacular orange one that crossed a good portion of the sky, but overall it wasn't that great. There were periods of ten or so minutes without a single meteorseparated by either single meteors or occasionally twoin a minute or so. Trains tended to be a good length, and there was one in particular that was rather interesting. I only saw the very bright flash off to my right, but Peter said that the flash preceded a very long and fairly bright meteor. I'm at a bit of a loss to describe exactly how this occurred, unless it was really two meteors - one coming right at us (the flash) and then another to create the long train that he saw. Other than that, probably three sporadics (way off course for Perseids), and one very bright satellite which we thought could've been bright enough to have been the international space station. Saw about 25 big perseides in this night and one very bright bolide from the constellation cygnus into saggitarius. An after glowing trail, color turned white-blue with smoke. Hi Bob- Wow, not my experience at all. I only discarded about 5 obvious sporadics from the 95 meteors collected over three nights (70 of those from the night of Aug 11/12). Normally I'd have around 20, but the poor skies limited detections to bright meteors, which were mostly Perseids. Because of bad weather, most of my images were collected between about 2am and 5am, so there wasn't much movement of the radiant. Consequently, the radiant is very obvious in the image I linked earlier ( http://www.cloudbait.com/science/perseid2006.html ). I fell off the meteorobs list a while back for some reason; if you'd like, feel free to post the above link there. This year appears to be above average for the Perseids once you factor in the combination of a bright moon and bad weather. I saw two at a time a couple of times. Then the clouds/fog started rolling back in and closed down the show. The Perseids from Pittsburgh, PA was a bust. Partial clouds around 10:30 pm. Saw a fairly bright one at 10:50 pm, which may have been a sporadic as it went north to south. Clouds began to get heavier and by 2 am it was completely clouded over. I quit when I began to feel the raindrops. Hello folks, We had a beautifull Perseid 11-12 August night here, that we will long remember. At first we were affraid to loose the night as it seemed a front would pass over right this night. But it didn't, at least not for several hours after midnight. We saw the pre-frontal cirrus coming in south of us, but most of it dissolved before it was over us. I counted an Lm varying between +6.5 and +6.8, with a few short breaks in observations because of patches of clouds drifting over, but mostly we got it clear. We observed from our dark location in Biddinghuizen, in the central polders of the Netherlands. And what a show it was! In about 3.5 hours of effective observing between 20:33 and 00:30 UTC (then we quit as heavier clouds moved in, and my observing mate Robert had to work to day) I observed 223 meteors of which 182 were Perseids. This night was memorable for the really unusual number of bright Perseids, especially in the magnitude zero to -3 range. Being an experienced meteor observer, I can absolutely say this was unusual for an August 11-12 night. It suggests that something unusual was going on, even though I cannot make out any presence of the predicted 20:54 UTC peak of 1862 dust in my data (but we still had twilight then, as this was near the start of our local night). Anyway, this was one of the best Perseid shows I've seen in years (have to get back to 1993 to surpass it). So we feel very very happy to have seen it! We had a reporter from one of the major Dutch newspapers with us in the field. Today the frontpage of the Volkskrant opened with a large picture of our team member Robert Haas setting up his camera equipment in twilight. Next saturday, the newspaper will have a background article on our activities in the science pages. Dear List, In case anyone is interested in a summary of some topics that make observing the upcoming and in progress Perseid Meteor Shower interesting, besides the great fireworks themselves, I am posting this message, which I couldn't post on July 30, due to AOL difficulties. This is possibly the finest meteor showers of the year and helps makes the Summer and in particular August, Meteormonth... Enjoy !!! You might prefer a hillside with Northeastern exposure, but that is not required, the hillside just makes it harder to fall asleep from being on your back, and the northern exposure just allows you to see the radiant so you can be sure of the authenticity of the meteors you see. (Meteors can show up in most of the sky, though all the Perseids seem to come out of Perseus, due to the orbital dynamics as the earth slams into the directional meteoroid stream. And of course a place that isn't too hazy and definitely not cloudy or rainy. The best time will be, as in the case of most all meteor observing, before dawn and in the absence of much moonlight. So if you can, bring your girlfriend and tell her you want to watch meteors, the beautiful crescent Moonrise and the beautiful half-Venusrise, on the morning of August 12 Thursday Morning, a.k.a. late Wednesday night). The Moon will rise at about 2:18 AM quickly followed by Venus at about 2:37 AM. So you should be settled in watching meteors by no later than 2:00 AM. The Moon and Venus will be rather close, and thus quite romantic looking, practically plastered on Castor, whose head is the star of the same name in the constellation Gemini, the twin brothers with different fathers. Castor, the slightly dimmer of the two bright head-stars, by the way was the mortal of the commemorated pair, and son of Tyndareus and Leda, while Jupiter (Zeus) was hot for Leda and turned into a Swan and she laid two eggs after being seduced, one from her husband and one from Zeus. They grew up and were inseparable brothers until Idas killed Castor - and Pollux mourned him so much that Zeus put them together again in the stars (and also Castor was given visiting rights on alternate days to Hades to be with his beloved brother). Perseus' story is similar in that Zeus fooled around with yet another king's wife who then bore Perseus, so step Dad was somewhat miffed with this abuse of divine authority and sent Perseus on what was thought to be certain death to kill Medusa, the ugliest of the snake haired trio of Gorgon sisters that turned one to stone if if you so much as glanced at them. Perseus lived, completed the task (delivering the head as requested as a wedding present), and then killed Cetus or Draco to rescue the beautiful Andromeda, daughter of the vain Goddess offending African Queen Cassiopeia who was chained to a chaise lounge in punishment (The W), and each of these characters but the ugly Gorgons got their constellations. Four stars in Perseus have Gorgon names, though, and the rather bright ever changing variable star Algol (English: Ghoul, a.k.a. Gorgonea Prima, a.k.a. Ras Al Gul), the second brightest star of Perseus is supposed to be Medusa's head, and three other stars around it are named Secunda, Tertia y Quarta, for the three sisters. Algol is famously amazing as it varies its brightness as a factor of about five as it has a fast orbiting star (69 hours) around it that is continuously connected by a sucked particle stream, providing amazing views to ringside observers in their shielded starships. This variability of brightness to the naked eye no doubt led to the demonic nature attributed to Algol, the Demonhead-Star. The annular eclipse (when Algol loses 80% of its brightness and Medusa winks) is visible in Oregon (PDT) from 12:30 to 2:30 AM on August 2 (but full Moon throughout), and again from 9:30 PM to 11:30 PM on August 4 (near full Moon after Moonrise at 10:50 pm, so a respectable 10-10:30 PM is best), if you'd like to warm up, as Perseids are visible pretty much the whole month...even some before midnight when the rotation of the Earth favors seeing more meteors for observers at that time The radiant is the point where the Perseids seem to radiate from, like the hub of a bicycle wheel and spokes, but the meteors can appear in most of the sky. So if you know where the radiant is, you pretty much confirm authenticity that the meteor you see is really a Perseid from Comet Swift

Hi all, No complaints regarding the Perseid rates here (only about the weather on the maximum night...). We had a nice show from Holland (Europe). On the night 12-13 I observed 147 Perseids (out of a total of 183 meteors) in 2.33 hours observing time (then we got clouded out) with the radiant still not high in the sky. Last night 13-14 we observed again, one day after the maximum, and noted plenty of meteors including many Perseids. I have not checked the memorecorder tape for this night yet but I estimate I have at least 250-300 meteors, most Perseids. So: they were there in Europe! That Europe got slightly higher rates than the US is no surprise as the peak of the shower happened over Europe this year. Yet, the several reports of very low rates from the US surprise me. Because the show was still very nice, as seen from here, a day after the maximum. I attempted to post this yesterday, but I forgot to include the List in the recipients. The Perseid shower appeared to be diminished this year, but I certainly would not call it a bust. I saw many Perseids during a two hour period on both Sunday and Monday night from our astronomy club's observing site 10 miles northeast of Mt Palomar. I did not try to keep a count of the number that I saw, but I would estimate that the number varied from 10-20 to over 40 per hour. My friend Dave was counting them Sunday night and he observed close to 20 in a 40 minute period. These numbers would probably be even greater if I had an unobstructed view of the entire horizon and if I was able to keep my eyes open. I know that I nodded of several times Monday night. When I started to observe them last night (2AM Tuesday morning), I saw 6 Perseids and two sporadics in a 1 minute period. The meteors appeared to cluster, seeing several in a couple of minutes and then nothing for minutes at at time. I did not witness any spectacular events, but several of the meteors were brighter than 0 magnitude. On Monday night I attempted to observe the trails of the bright meteors in a pair of binoculars, but I was successful only once on a Perseid in the North shortly before I went to bed. The trail persisted for about 30 seconds in the binoculars after the visual sighting of the meteor and its trail. I saw many short Perseids that originated very close to the radiant. As for the post from last night inquiring about seeing satellites, the exists a very good web site that predicts satellite predictions for your location. Go to http://www.heavens-above.com/ http://www.heavens-above.com/ and enter your location information. The site will give you predictions for satellite crossings, occurrences for Iridium flashes, and other interesting information. The satellite predictions are only for objects in which the ephemeris is made public. No military or classified satellite predictions are included. I would say that at least half of the satellites the I usually see are not contained in the listing. Anyway, to answer the persons question, observing 20 satellites in a three hour period it not uncommon as long as you are in a dark sky location and looking up. Hi, Well, I have been waiting a long time to be able to sit outside with my oldest boy at 11 o clock at night and watch a meteor storm! Made me feel like a real parent! And Sam (who is 10) got a real buzz being able to stay up late! What a gas!!! not a great number of them, but those that we saw veritably cut the sky in half and left a trail for a second or two. Like breathtaking rockets, they were! Sam was demanding to see one, having waited outside for what must have been a very long 10 minutes to him, when, right on cue, as soon as Sam had extorted Well, C'mon, let's see one!, a huge arc of yellow light cut the heavens in half - he was most impressed with his apparent ability to summon them up!! After an hour or so I thought it was about time the young chap want to bed - he agreed to go after seeing one last one. No sooner had I agreed this with him when another lit up the skynight, Sam, off to bed! - he couldn;t argue! What really surprised me was the very large number of satellites we both saw going across the sky - maybe 6 or so? They were not planes (previous experience has helped me to tell the difference between planes and a satellite overpass) What wondrous heavens!! In gentle decay, d. Hi List, Stayed up till 3:30am (my co-workers always know why I use a vacation day after the Perseids :-) Chicago time...waiting for cloud cover to break...it didn't. Chicago weather is fickle. The evening sky of the 10th and 11th was absolutely clear, and saw (2) on Sat. and (3) on Sun. Last year was the same, cloud cover on the peak evening, clear...two days prior. I usually take a fast look at the skies many nights, but it had completely slipped my mind that the Perseid shower was the night of the 12th, so I didn't look, and nothing really caught my attention out the windows. There was also some confustion from friends who claimed the fall was actually on the 11th, not the 12th. Anyway, I saw nothing, NOTHING!! (for those of you who remember Sgt. Well, here in Manchester (UK) things looked like they were going to be great at 6pm, there was little cloud for a change, and the blue sky made me think that it was going to be a good night. But as it got darker the cloud became more prevalent and soon enough a fairly dense layer had built up - easy to judge round here from the street light pollution bouncing off the cloud base. So, personally, I was disappointed again. Still it could never compare with one time years back when me and a bunch of friends laid outside watching the shooting stars, not knowing just how fortuitous we were to have picked that night of all nights to camp on top of a hill away from the streetlights. Dear List: I spent the past two nights out at the local amateur astronomers association observatory in Deer Lakes Park (Wagman Observatory), about 20 miles northeast of Pittsburgh, PA. Sunday night was fairly clear with high thin clouds. Between midnight and 2:30 am, we saw about a dozen meteors, with maybe four being sporadic. Monday night was a bit worse with more clouds and fair ground fog, but we still saw about a dozen between midnight and 3 am (mostly through a hole directly overhead), with the brightest being a sporadic. Not a great night, but we seem to have had better luck than most other listees. Sure can't compare to the Leonids last November in Arizona!! [meteorite-list] Perseids 2001
Hello List, I went out between 4:00-5:15 AM Monday the 12th here in Little Rock, Arkansas to try to catch a pre-peak-peek at the Perseids. The sky was mostly clear then, and the forecast was calling for clouds and rain moving in Monday night. It was a good thing I did go then, because the weathermen got it right this time. Monday night was completely clouded out. I didn't do an exact count for that hour and fifteen minutes on the 12th, but I'm certain I saw at least 50-60 meteors, if not more. Four of them were really nice, with persistent trains of a few seconds. And two others produced an almost terminal burst flare-up at the end that lit up a small part part of the sky like lightning. Judging from what some of the other members have said about the shower not being that good, it appears I got lucky. It got me really looking forward to the Leonids later on!
