Re: [meteorite-list] Stability of Sericho (Habaswein)
Hi Everyone… Just picked up on this thread and I agree with MikeM. However, more to his point, Gibeon sold for as little as $16/kg — and spectacular specimens. The Gibeon Owl — the cover lot of the Heritage Meteorite catalog of several years back — that’s right, acquired for $16/kg. Certainly there are specimens of Sericho which are wanting, but anyone who passes on a chance to purchase good material for $2.00/g let alone $0.20/g will find themselves wanting. If possible, examine the exterior rind before making an acquisition If the olivine and metallic matrix are clearly articulated, there’s an excellent chance you’re good. When the exterior surface exhibits a lack of material differentiation, that’s when serious weathering has occurred and I would suggest being far more cautious. Re: [meteorite-list] Stability of Sericho (Habaswein)
Hello all I rarely post to the list, but felt compelled to point out the obvious. First of all to the HUGE TKW of this find. Do you remember all those tons and tons of $100 per kilo Gibeons that used to be floating around? All gone How about the metric tons of Seymchan pallasites.yep all gone. Or maybe the cargo ships laden with Campo's, you guessed it almost all gone. Sericho will also be all gone in 10 short years or less. Now to the stability of Sericho, yes it helps to get a big dry specimen to start with, but most any pallasite can be stabilized. Many times crappy preparation has resulted in a rusty meteorite, and many more times good preparation techniques have resulted in a lifetime of beautiful pallsites in many peoples collections. The Sericho will be just fine, no matter what the big time know it all's say about it. Re: [meteorite-list] Stability of Sericho (Habaswein)
I'll preface this with the fact that I am a collector. Not a dealer... not interested. Just collecting. I purchased a part slice of Sericho from Michael Farmer back at the beginning of the year. It was prepared extremely well and remains in its case of desiccant inside of my display case. There have been no cases of rust, Lawrencite, or any other issues that are in question with my specimen. This is in Minnesota where up until recently the humidity doesn't drop below 60-70% during spring or summer. Keeping any sort of Iron in check around this part of the country is a giant pain. Hope this cleared some of the questions up. Re: [meteorite-list] Stability of Sericho (Habaswein)
This was Mike Farmers exact question which was forwarded to the List: * "As if you know anything about what this was selling for in Japan. When if the last time you’ve left your house?" * If responding to this makes me look like a fool in your opinion, then so be it. The same list members that respond to what I post are generally dealers that have a financial stake in what is being discussed and don't like to hear what I have to say. I do not see any collectors being representing in these debates after the initial post. A collector was simply asking advice on the stability of this Pallasite which he experienced problems with. It would be nice to get genuine collectors' opinions but most do not care to post for the fear of being attacked if some dealer doesn't like what they have say. Adam, OhhhI thought ther was hope. I too feel your (and others') pain, paid $2,000 for a Brenham slab that was beautiful and now is is a bunch of space jewels that will one day be sent to Twink---for a necklace and bracelet-etc.. Some people get lucky in their purchase and others not. Original condition and subsequent preparation/preservation seems to be the key + Luck. "Avoid rusters at all costs" === very subjective !! What I can't seem to avoid, at all costs, is the impulse to respond to ongoing, ongoing, continuing posts where the poster is in essence just enjoying reading his own posts. Got it Adam.. Any further Information (Not Rhetoric) by anyone would be appreciated. There is a big difference between a 55 Ford from the dry Southwest and a 55 Chevy from the salt-treated roads of the East coast. My all-time favorite car is an aluminum 1965 Shelby Cobra 427 SC. The only issue is electrolysis between steel in contact with aluminum parts which can be solved with stainless steel fasteners. In all seriousness, it is good to stand behind what you sell. Perhaps a lifetime warranty against rust is order like chemical Rhino linings on a pick up truck bed. Hello, I believe it depends on the pieces and where they were found. I understand that some were found on salt-flats. I have a couple that I bought in June from Mike Farmer. One was cut in two halves, no special treatment, no varnish or lacquer. My customers are not reporting any problems. They are holding up just fine. Much better than Admire!! Anne M. I tried to tell people that. But some people want cheap. The rotten small ones from under the salt lake are a bit of a problem. Re: [meteorite-list] Stability of Sericho (Habaswein)
Only time will tell if Sericho is a serious ruster or not. The fortunate thing is that there is a massive amount available (several metric tons) so we can check back on it a few years from now and see how it stands the test of time. A few months is not enough time to make determinations on its stability. I have prepared over 60,000 meteorite specimens so I feel qualified to comment on preparation. I am only trying to save collectors from a lot of grief. Re: [meteorite-list] Stability of Sericho (Habaswein)
Anne M. Re: [meteorite-list] Stability of Sericho (Habaswein)
I have extensive experience with Pallasites having collected them since the 1990s . My all-time favorite is Esquel. The Esquel had a clear coat finish applied to it and I saw one small rust spot appear. I removed the coating and polished it properly and it has been trouble-free ever since. Of course I live in the Mohave desert so humidity is not a problem. The best advice I can give to a collector is to avoid rusters altogether. I learned the hard way and have lost thousands on improperly prepared Pallasites or specimens prone to rust. I pulled one example out of my safe several years ago and was dismayed to see that it had disintegrated. The only thing holding it together was the clear coat shell that prevented the crystals from popping out. The slice was actually flexible since the metal was all but gone. The clear coat held it together long enough for me to throw it in a trashcan. A good specimen should not need any coatings or treatment in my opinion. Re: [meteorite-list] Stability of Sericho (Habaswein)
Not true I have been selling Sericho since July. The first pieces were expertly prepared by one of the best in the industry and rusted. I switched cutters to one who uses chemical cleaning, galvanic cleaning, high polish and etch, and top quality sealant. Since then there has been one rusted endcut (of hundreds) and it had been wrapped in bubble wrap for two months while lost in the mail in uncertain conditions. I Have handled hundreds of pounds and I say the exact opposite. Buy quality prepared sealed specimens and you'll be fine. Not sure what Adam's experience is with this Pallasite but mine is as extensive as possible in it's short cut life. Hundreds of pieces, 2 with rust. Mike Farmer has a lot of experience with this sliced as well. My advice is to stay away from any sliced pieces with a lacquer or clear-coat surface. It is sign that shortcuts were taken in its preparation. Proper polishing reduces the surface area on cut pieces of any meteorite aiding in the prevention of "lawrencite disease."
