been so designated. The definition requires that more than 95% of a

What about irons stony/irons etc? How do they fall into the new category?
There are quite a few shales in collections and I'm curious if they would be

They certainly should be considered relict meteorites if there is

[meteorite-list] Very Rare NWA2828

Dear Greg and List,
Please disregard my previous post. Greg explains
now why NWA2828 is Very Rare. Thank you Greg for
clearing up the issue. Best Regards, Dirk...Tokyo

--- Greg Hupe [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

 Hi Dirk and List,

Ah, I see I didn't make the change to these older
 unsold lots when I
re-loaded them earlier this morning. If you look at
 one of the last
paragraphs, I had made this change ready for the
 start of next week's
 auctions:

Oxygen isotope results were obtained at the
 Carnegie Institution in
Washington D.C. Further studies are underway on NWA
 2828 including bulk rock
chemical analysis at the University of Cologne, and
 attempted measurement of
terrestrial age using carbon isotopes at the
 University of Arizona. The
Total Known Weight (TKW) for NWA 2828 is officially
 recorded as 34,186 grams
consisting of many stones. With pairings, the
 combined weight is in access
 of 100kg.

I was sent a direct link to the abstract which
 mentions the pairing numbers
and but it does not seem to work as a link because
 of some difficulty with
the hosting site. We went round and round last month
 trying to make it work,
but had to settle without the link. I am sure a
 quick Google search for NWA
2828 will result in finding the abstract which is
the same as I posted to
 the list earlier.

I will have to go back to the eBay auctions and make
 the changes when I get
done with some other duties here.

I would not agree with your statement that there is
 ...another 1000kgs...
of this material. When this was first thought (and
 classified) to be an
aubrite, I was in Morocco no less than every 30 days
 buying up all of the
blue or fresher material (NWA 2828 at the time).
 Even with the
realization and work of Drs Tony Irving and Ted
 Bunch, among others, the
more weathered material combined with the fresher
 blue material did not
amount to that much. I saw first hand what was
 available, what I bought
and/or left behind (none of the blue that I saw).

Anyway, we could ramble on for days (again), but I
 think this horse has been
beaten, rode hard and sent out for collectors to
 consider.

 Happy Trails!

after reviewing my correspondance with Dr. Bunch it seems we were both wrong
in terms of wat material is 'fresher' - i thought you had it backwards but
what it seems the official opinion is - is that the material that is porous
with black 'scale' on the outside it the more weathered - this can occur in
both the brown AND the blue - I have seen it more in the blue than I have
the brown in terms of number of pieces - but the feature is probably equally
distributed in terms of weight of material.

Some of the nicest blue material that I have seen,
in a photo, on eBay, is being sold by Michael
Cottingham. Since he uses the NWA2828 number, I would

beautiful. Michael is very good at taking photographs.
I did not see all of Greg`s offerings because the eBay
search page photos did not load. Greg has revised his

thank you Greg for correcting your mistake. Greg has

Hi Dirk and List,

Thank you for the very nice compliments, and for initially pointing out my
description oversight on my NWA 2828 eBay re-loads of today.

Yes, the NWA 2828 material Michael Cottingham is offering is from material
he obtained from me. The weight he has is accounted for from the TKW listed
with NWA 2828.

 Dear Greg and List,
Some of the nicest blue material that I have seen,
in a photo, on eBay, is being sold by Michael
Cottingham. Since he uses the NWA2828 number, I would
guess that he has some material from you? Very
beautiful. Michael is very good at taking photographs.
I did not see all of Greg`s offerings because the eBay
search page photos did not load. Greg has revised his
 listing information and has a more accurate TKW100;
thank you Greg for correcting your mistake. Greg has
demonstrated how to be a role model for dealers; great
 job.

I would also like to thank Stan for his very hard work

anyone having some or not yet having some should
consider it. It is fairly priced and someday you will
regret not buying now. Check Tucson! I think Greg

Re: [meteorite-list] Very Rare NWA2828

2007-01-05 Thread Greg Hupe
Hi Dirk and List,

I will be at the Tucson Show for just a few short days this year, from
February 1st through the 4th. I will only be entering some material in
Michael Blood's auction (one piece of NWA 2828 and 20 other great items).

I will be bringing my new Martian meteorite, NWA 4468, well at least the 353
gram main mass for Show-n-Tell. You thought the 3-D video and slice photos
were cool, wait until you see this in person. I brought a slice to Denver
and showed a couple of people who can vouch at the beauty of this unusual
Martian. I think Mike Farmer already said something to the effect. I hope to
have the official classification next week when the most recent numbers are
compiled.

Hope to see old friends and meet those who I haven't met in person yet.

Best regards,
Greg

Hey, it's about time some of the coolest stuff in the meteorite world is
available to all!

Isn't this the first fossil meteorite open to the collector market?

Also, Greg, Stan, Mike and who ever knows. Some of the brown (presumably
collected on the surface) SEEMS to have remnants of crust, over lipping etc.
Is this possible, have you seen it, or am I just over examining until I see

99% of the black stuff ont he outside of the brown material is simply the
oxidized metal veining that is seen int he matrix of this material. the
material weathered preferentially allong the vetal veins and hence broke up
allong the veins as well.

this stone must have been KILLER looking when it was fresh, but imho it
still looks pretty darned neat even today.
