[meteorite-list] Thank you and Computer problems

2013-12-20 Thread Anne Black

Hello everybody,

Sorry I have not thanked all of you who answered my question regarding
the pieces of Banten I posted on the Picture of the Day (Thank you
Paul), it did help and the origin of the pieces has been narrowed down
to probably the Museum of Bandung in Indonesia.

And the reason I did not respond sooner is that my computer had been
invaded by a weird virus that did not damage any of my data but was
apparently having fun moving things around, shutting down my computer
on a random basis, or broadcasting a radio station in German! After a
couple days in the Computer-Hospital, my computer is behaving,
everything seems to be back to normal. Only one remaining problem: I
cannot update my website, but that will be taken care of shortly. In
the mean time please do email me if you have any questions.

Again thanks.

2013-12-20 Thread Darryl Pitt

Hi

Just noticed this.

I was the primary source of Banten as it regards the material in
circulation—probably responsible for 90% or more. I obtained Banten in an
exchange with the Museum Geologi. i was subsequently involved in a handful of
exchanges and sales of Banten and it was offered at a Macovich Auction in
Tucson about13 years ago! (Egad). The Indonesian MG no longer
participates in exchanges.

All the best,

Darryl

2011-04-25 Thread Count Deiro
If this is a repost..I'n sorry.

I want to thank everyone on and off List for the many congratulations.

A correction to the Bulletin. The Stump Springs main mass is held by myself and
the Smithsonian. Sonny Clary donated the half that he acquired from me to the
Institution last year. The number 83 is because 82 numbers were reserved by
Sonny. How you do do this isn't quite clear to me. There are no other Stump
Springs meteorites in the Bulletin. And, I'm informed this LL6 is unique to
any meteorites Sonny has found in this location, and he has found quite a few,
as did Jim Krieg and other hunters. Sonny told me those he located in his
strewn field were H's.

Greg Hupe found a different classification chondrite less than half a mile from
my find a few months ago while accompanied by myself and Adam.. So, there are
probably at least three different classifications that have fallen in this
strewn field and close proximity.

Stump Springs 83 is the largest intact chondrite found so far in Nevada. If you
would like to see a photo of how I prepped and mounted it, the link is below.
It's mounted upright as I first saw it. I used hot distilled water and a
stainless brush followed by a soak in 98% alcohol and a bake in the oven. The
way it's depicted hides the fact it was cut in half. It still shows some fusion
crust even though it's terrestrial age is probably tens of thousands of years.

Congrats again to the Count and All involved for the discovery,

the two individuals I found in October. These are different from each other
and were ~1.25 miles apart, one being ~1/2 mile from Guido's.

[meteorite-list] Thank you Laurence Garvie

2010-08-18 Thread cdtucson
Laurence,
Just a quick note to let you and this wonderful meteorite community know that I
received your package today.
As busy as you are at ASU You went way out of your way to help me with these
seven meteorite prospects.
I was expecting a few notes on paper telling me I had nothing.
Instead , what I got was a nicely detailed letter very well organized along
with an actual print out of each PIXE
screening. These reports spell out the mineralogy of each specimen including
the Nickel content.
I was very happy to see that three of the seven did have enough nickel to
warrant further review.
And the fact that you did all of this work in such a short period of time adds
to the excitement.
Laurence you went well above the call on this. I appreciate this more than you
know..
You are truly one of the great scientists in this field.. Thank you again.

This seems like a good time to recognize a few other scientists that have also
gone out of their way in the past to personally help me.
Jeff Grossman, Tony Irving, Ted Bunch, Alan Rubin , Randy Korotev, Marc Fries,
Rhian Jones, Jim Karner, Dolores Hill, David Kring,
Carlton Moore, John Wasson, Tim McCoy, Pierre Rochette. G. Jeffrey Taylor,
David Mittlefehldt Robert Matson and Elton Jones. And too many others to
mention that have helped me indirectly. And far too many Non-scientists to
mention as well. So, thank you to everybody.
So as you can see to be great you don't have to be a collector, dealer or
hunter. Scientists are alright as well. Thanks again to all of you.
 Carl.

[meteorite-list] Thank you List.

2009-09-22 Thread countdeiro
Good Morning from Sin City,

I have been collecting and recently hunting meteorites for just these past nine
months. Nearly a dozen dealers on the LIST can attest that I caught the bug
and quickly aquired first, the requisite, ubquitose, types and now the more
definitive and rare examples as I refine my interest. I could not have obtained
these specimens and the lab equipiment to enjoy them without the postings of
the members of the List and their respective websites.

The amount of knowledge one can aquire from perusing the professional
photography and academic papers posted to the List and available on the dozens
of links provided is frankly, incredible.

I wish to publicly thank the List for welcoming this newbie.

A special thanks to Sonny Clary who, by serendipty, lives within hailing
distance of me and has generously guided my first steps into this remarkable
field of interest. His finds, particularly in Nevada, are among the rariest
extant.

A quick Vielen Dank to Moritz Karl for the gorgeous Cape York. The Winonaite
was beautifully prepared.

[meteorite-list] Thank You Scientists!

2009-09-07 Thread Greg Hupe

Hello Ed,

You stated, Maybe what we need is more UFOs and fewer bolides, given all
the NWA material on the market...

All NWA material (and other material found elsewhere) are 'UFO's' until the

This seems like a perfect time to acknowledge the hard work and efforts the
scientific community has done for those of us who primarily work with NWA
material. Without this handful of dedicated scientists, many Saharan finds
would never be recognized as meteorites and brought to the many public and
private collections throughout the world. Their work has added valuable
information that may not have been discovered with these hot desert finds.

[meteorite-list] Thank you!

2009-08-26 Thread matt
Back in May I posted a request for 'giveaway' meteorites for a series of
presentations I was giving to school students. I realised last night that in the
rush to finish for the summer, writing about it for Meteorite magazine and the
birth of our second child I never publicly thanked those that came to my aid.

Two people in particular helped me out.

Mark Crawford, a fellow British collector, who quickly sent me some NWA
fragments and tektites, entirely at his own cost, which I have used as prizes in
a competition following on from the presentations. Since the event only took
place the week before we finished for the summer, I'll be giving those out next
week when we return to school.

Sonny Clary, who sent me 90(!) fragments of a 120lb chondrite he found in Nevada
in 2007. Shipping alone was almost $50, and I cannot imagine the time invested
in making a find like this, but Sonny never asked for a penny (US readers may
substitute the word 'dime' for 'penny'). Truly amazing generosity, which allowed
every single one of the students involved to take a piece of space-rock home on
the day.

If you haven't already seen it check out Geoff Notkin's article:

http://tucsoncitizen.com/lizard/2009/08/24/ralph-sonny-clary-meteorite-hunter-and-philanthropist-makes-important-donation-to-british-school-kids/

And keep an eye out for the upcoming Meteorite magazine article!

Regards,

Matt.

West, Texas meteorites finds and photos of some of the sights. I consider
the hunt more than just the stones, it was also a treasure to meet people
who I had never met in person before, meeting new friends and the visual
treasure we encountered that the farmlands of Texas had to offer.

Thank You again, Michael Johnson, very professional job and very kind of

If you fired a projectile ( a moon rock ) from the surface

enough force to reach escape velocity?

That's an engineering question. If you're a good enough
 engineer, the answer is YES.

Would the projectile continue to increase speed after leaving
  the barrel of the canon...?

Eric, go read a book by that nice Mr. Galileo or Mr. Newton.
Seriously. Get a simple old-fashioned physics text about dynamics
and the basic laws of motion and energy.

If you toss a rock, does it continue to speed up AFTER
it leaves your hand? If it did, then the experience of tossing
a rock would be that it goes further and further, faster
and faster, until it's so fast that it begins to glow with
frictional heat and blazes out the Earth's atmosphere like
 a meteorite!

Funny. When I toss a rock, it just makes a little arc
and goes Plop! in my neighbor's yard.

or does it stay at the velocity from which it leaves the barrel?

If you toss a rock straight up, does it continue at the same
constant 32mph that it had when it left your hand and climb
at a steady speed upward against the Earth's gravity, until it
leaves the Earth's atmosphere behind and enters space...
 all at a stately 32mph?

When I toss a rock straight up, it slows down and down
until it can't go any higher, then falls back and hits me on
the head. In the interests of experimental science, I suggest
you get some good hefty rocks and try these tests. Space
travel would be so easy if your Laws of Motion were true.

 OK, skip the tests.

You're on the Moon. You pick up a big rock and fit it
into your Super Duper Steam Powered Slingshot, capable
of firing a rock at 2380 meters per second, which oddly
enough is the Moon's excape velocity. (Actually you could
be a bit slower and still get to the Earth.)

The rock leaves the Super Duper Steam Powered Slingshot
at 2380 meters per second. After only one second of traveling
upward against the Moon's gravity, the rock is only traveling
at 2378.378 meters per second. That's because the Moon's
gravity is pulling back down on the rock with a force sufficient
to slow it down by 1.622 meters per second.

The Moon's gravity will continue to slow the rock at the rate
of 1.622 meters per second per second until, about 2 days later,
the rock is just barely crawling along at a snail's pace thousands
of miles above the Moon, when it reaches a place where the
strong gravity of the faraway Earth is pulling foward on the rock
just as strongly as the gravity of the much closer but weaker
Moon is pulling back on it, and the rock starts to fall toward
the Earth, now gaining speed instead of losing it.

Three days or so later, your mild-mannered rock will come
blazing into the Earth's atmosphere at a speed of almost 11,186
 meters per second!

Would the stones survive the trip through our atmosphere?

Here's where aim counts: the right angle of approach or perhaps
a grazing orbit or two before re-entry... Anything is possible
if you have sufficiently accurate control of your path. It's
 do-able.

If the projectile (moon rock) did survive all of this,
would it be considered a meteorite?

That would depend on how the argument on this List came out...

Scientifically speaking, wouldn't this be an interesting experiment?

Scientifically speaking, no... But, dude, it would be so much
kewler than a potato cannon or even a watermelon cannon!

[meteorite-list] Thank you West Texas!

2009-03-07 Thread Eric Wichman

Hi All,

We're back from West Texas now and after letting things slow down a bit
and catching up on some much needed work I've finally got a moment to
post some photos. I'd like to thank all you guys out there in meteorite
land. My good friends, Mike Miller Ruben Garcia (finally got to meet
you Ruben after talking on the phone for 2 years!) Without you guys'
help this trip might not have been a success.

A big hello and thank you also go out to our new friends Michael
Cottingham and Christopher Cottingham for his first finds,
congratulations to Christopher for his gorgeous 44 gram oriented West
meteorite. It was a pleasure to be there to see it happen. And to Keith
and Dana Jenkerson, we appreciate the advice! Jim Baxter, I didn't
forget you... It was very good to meet you Jim!

I certainly can't forget Mike Farmer, Robert Ward, Shauna Russell, Greg
Hupe, and their crew for their generosity in sharing the information. It
was good to meet all you guys finally. A big hello also to Steve Arnold
Geoff Notkin. It was good to finally meet you Steve, I have a new
found respect for you now. And to Geoff, glad to meet you again, this
time in the field. Too bad we didn't get a chance to talk a bit.

I also want to thank all the people of West Texas for their Texas sized
hearts and their overwhelming generosity. If it weren't for your
hospitality the scientists and hunters wouldn't have had the opportunity
to collect as many specimens and the meteorites would be plowed over or
rotted away never to be seen again. Not only did you help us collect
meteorites, you helped further science and the knowledge of our
universe! I thank you very much for your kindness, and the meteorite
world thanks you, sincerely.

As for Hopper, the meteorite finding dog... ;) Well all I can say is I
have to chuckle a bit!. We got to spend two days with Hopper. No photos
of the dog but I did somehow manage to get on the news in the Hopper
segment New 8 Austin filmed. I'm only in the opening scenes but it was
kind of exciting to see yourself on TV. Weird feeling really. Hopper
liked everyone, well, everyone that might have food! She also loved to
mess with the cows.

My first experience with Hopper was startling. Literally! I was out in
the middle of a field minding my own meteorite hunting business and all
of a sudden out of the middle of nowhere as I was staring at the ground
searching intently for the elusive West Texas meteorite this black furry
creature runs up to me and I about jump out of my boots!

You have to picture this, I'm concentrating so hard on the ground at
finding a meteorite that I'm oblivious to my surroundings and out of
nowhere a black hairy thing comes walking up within inches of my leg and
I was staring into the eyes of the beast! ;) lol My heart leapt and I
had to choke back a little noise. THAT was MY first experience with
Hopper! Sweet dog really…

Another little tidbit of info for all you guys that went Gaa Gaa over
Hopper. Since we did get a chance to hunt for two days with Hopper
running around and frolicking in the fields of West Texas, we got to see
a side of Hopper most didn’t have the good fortune to witness. They
certainly experienced it, even if it was unknowingly. Dogs will be dogs,
and we all know dogs like stinky stuff. Really stinky stuff! And what do
dogs do when they find stinky stuff? That’s right, they roll in it!

Hopper came up to me and played and right off I noticed how nice a dog
she was. She was so friendly she would walk up to anyone. I petted her
and played a little with her in the field and went back to hunting. Then
a couple hours later, I witnessed her rolling around on the ground about
20 feet or so away, and when I walked over to see what was going on,
that’s when I noticed the nice big, ugly and very dead raccoon Hopper

Hello lists,
thank you for the very wide discussion, which I could stimulate.
It are the greenhorns, the newcomer who purchase the most metwrongs.
But never an IMCA member should sell this shit. He should carry out the
code of ethics.
We all do mistakes but if someone do a mistake as an IMCA member
selling unintended a metwrong to newcomers (and all other) he should
iimmediately correct the deal if the customer can prove the assertion
of wrongness.
It is dishonorable to start an act of defensiveness and to bombard the
new collector with allegations that he is not a professional person and
has to stop talking.
I did not know whether the IMCA has in the past suspended dishonorable
member, but I think it is time to start. Otherwise this association
will lost reputation.

Hi all,
I just wanted to say thank you for all the emails I've received regarding the

I also wanted to say thanks for over 175,000 views on youtube and 102

just over a year I'd have made over 25 meteorite related videos and that they

Hello all,

Thank you Matteo.

Yesterday morning early when I first checked the eBay listings, I saw
an Aubrite listed. After Planetaries and Texas specimens, Aubrites are
my favorite, so I placed a bid.

A bit later in the day, reviewing my finances and bills (income,
property and school taxes) due in January, I realized that I was in
trouble ... way too many bills and definitely too little money.

I then asked Matteo to please cancel my bid. He courteously agreed and
has done so. I truly appreciate it.

Over the last 5 years (2002-2006) I've purchased over 100 different
specimens from him with no problems and look forward to purchasing more
as I can.

Again, thank you Matteo. I appreciate your consideration.

Dear Bill, List;
It may be worth noting again, be sure that you remember that the visible
iron specks are only part of that equation as the total iron is the
number for the L or H classification, and even though that WOULD APPEAR
to be an L from a visual, if there is more elemental iron, it could be
more than an L.
Caution needs to be embraced with just visual classification
Hope this is insightful to others,
Dave F.

I fully agree that people should be able to collect

Keith,

So why bring this up on a meteorite list? We're not

That's another group isn't it?

Some might consider those practices of yours as unethical or morally
bankrupt...

Though not me - just pointing out that it's easy to nitpick when it comes to
moral behaviour. I tend to live and let live - if some poor Arab can sell
some pieces of LDG for some barley and oil, that's fine by me... especially
pieces that are here today and buried for thousands of years tomorrow. The
same goes for mining oil, lead or what ever else people legally engage in to
put bread on their table. There are more significant artifacts/sites worthy
of study, so many in fact that it would probably take a thousand years to
study them all (and by that time they'll be studying us). I don't
see picking up flakes as immoral no matter how many academic eggheads say
so. Scientists don't have moral leg to stand on if you look at their past
behavior. Besides, I know numerous respected PhD's from research one
universities who don't agree with most of the current politically correct
rhetoric that infects many places of learning these days. I bet many of the
respected archaeologists you speak of have looted artifacts in their
collections, both private and institutional. Seems a bit hypocritical...

prohibit the export of antiquities without permits. If a
person doesn't have the paperwork, which documents
that his Libyan desert glass artifact was exported legally,
a case can be made that the artifact was exported in
violation of either the laws of Egypt or Libya. Since
legally exported artifact are suppose to be sold with
documentation proving that they are legal, the lack of
such, even if the result of negligence on the part of the
person selling it to you failing to provide it, can be used
to argue that the Libyan desert glass artifacts are illicit.
It the owner that has to prove that an artifact was
legally exported with a documented chain-of-custody
going back to the person, who originally received the
license to exported it. If a person doesn't have the
paperwork and don't have this chain-of-custody, the
person don't have the proof that artifact is legal and
the country of origin, whether it be Egypt or Libya
 can reclaim it.

I think this is wrong. The dealers who were successfully prosecuted in the
US England (for looting in Egypt) weren't successfully prosecuted because
they didn't have paperwork - pieces from old collections do not necessarily
have documentation. What nailed the case was the fact that they found the
detailed journal of the collector which revealed his activities. Most
importantly they found some stone reliefs/carvings in his house that were
hacked out of a monument. They were exact matches the reliefs that were
recently stolen from that monument. In addition, I'm pretty sure that you
face prosecution if you are in possession of items of $5,000 or more in
value.

Again, someone needs to do a detail study of the antiquity
laws of Egypt, Morocco, and Libya in reference to LEG
artifacts. It seems like people are being much too
complacent about the legally of collecting, buying, and
selling these artifacts. Regardless of whether a minority
of LDG artifacts might be legal, the overall illict trade
in these artifacts is contributing to the destruction of
 valuable archaeological sites.

Again, I think the laws regarding the possession of LDG artifacts has no
bearing on the meteorite list. I'll just have to agree to disagree whether
the study of flake chippings contribute to the destruction of valuable
archaeological sites. I don't know if I'm engaging in flaming here, but
I get frustrated with these chicken little/holier that thou arguments. And
I'm a bit fatigued after spending the night doing some stargazing and am
probably rambling. :-)

Respectfully,

Mark Bowling

This can be interpreted as:

It is always a simple matter to drag people along whether it is a
democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist
dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the
bidding of the leaders. This is easy. All you have to do is tell them they
are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and
exposing the country to danger. It works the same in every country.

[meteorite-list] Thank You - Was A fun Libyan Desert Glass Debate

2004-06-11 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
It was a fun and spirited discussion about the
legality of trading in / owning prehistoric artifacts
composed of Libyan Desert Glass. Given that 1. it
is quite obvious that between I and some people, a
middle ground on this discussion doesn't exist; 2.
some people find my arguments as unconvincing
as I found their arguments, and 3. I and other
people have expressed themselves enough for the
lurkers to understand each other's position, this is
a good time to agree to disagree about this topic
and let the topic cool down. Although I disagree
with them, I found your arguments quite interesting
and I shall think them over, while I attend to other
business.

(It might be fun to write a paper about this topic
for the Newsletter of the Delta Chapter of the
Louisiana Archaeological Society or even give a
talk on it at the Annual Meeting of the Louisiana
Archaeological Society. It not much, but that is
best that an amateur like me can expect to do.)

I think it would be fun to discuss this topic in more
detail in about 6 to 7 months, while I focus on my
bread and butter geologic work involving finding
sand, gravel, and road fill for companies; generating
oil and gas prospects, which I can sell; and, in my
spare time, research the topic of Egyptian artifacts
composed of Libyan Desert Glass in more detail.

An archaeologist friend has suggested that interested
parties can have a rematch on a mailing list associated
with the Ancient Near East ANE mailing list created
specifically for this topic whenever people are
ready for it this Fall. In that venue, some of the
archaeologists on the ANE Mailing Lists can also
participate and give us benefit of their expertise
concerning the complex legal and ethical questions
that entangled this discussion. It might even be
possible to find some sort of middle ground or
formulate guidelines for this controversy. Since
this topic is more archaeology than meteorites,
it will be on-topic and appropriate to discuss
matter on such a mailing list.

For interested people the archives of the ANE mailing
list can be found at:

https://listhost.uchicago.edu/pipermail/ane/
http://oi.uchicago.edu/OI/ANE/OI_ANE.html

Finally, this discussion inspired my archaeologist
lady friend to come up with a killer idea for a
research proposal that the U.S. Customs Service
and the Egyptian Supreme Council of Antiquites have
expressed interest in providing joint funding for
a period of 9 months. Anyway, she thanks you-all
for all of the always fascinating, entertaining,
and novel arguments and the inspiration.

Thank You-All and
Best regards

more detail in about 6 to 7 months,
HOPEFULLY WHEN YOU HAVE SOME ACTUAL FACTS TO ENLIGHTEN
US WITH
which I can sell; and, in my spare time, research the
topic of Egyptian artifacts
THIS IS A METEORITE DISCUSSION LIST. THIS IS A VERY
INTERESTING TOPIC AND THERE ARE DISCUSSION GROUPS FOR
IT BUT SINCE THIS IS A METEORITE LIST THIS TOPIC IS
NOT RELEVENT HERE
An archaeologist friend has suggested that
interested parties can have a rematch on a mailing
list associated
REMATCH ABOUT WHAT? NOBODY HAS ANY DISAGREEMENTS WITH
YOUR ARCHAELOGISTS. YOUR ARCHAELOGISTS SAID THAT
EXPORTING ARTIFACTS FROM EGYPT IS ILLEGAL - WITHER THE
ARTIFACT IS MADE FROM SILVER, GOLD, SAND OR LDG. AND
EVERYBODY HERE AGREES WITH HIM.
Finally, this discussion inspired my archaeologist
lady friend to come up with a killer idea for a

NOW WE ARE IN AGREEMENT. I DO BELIEVE THAT THERE
SHOULD BE MORE RESEARCH INTO WHAT HAPPENS WITH
ARTIFACTS, AND HOW COUNTRIES VIEWS THEIR CULTURAL
LAWS, AND HOW THE LAWS LIKE UNESCO AND UNDROIT
PROTECTS OR IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DISTRUCTION OF
CULTURAL PROPERTY. A SERIOUS EFFORT SHOULD BE DONE TO
SEE HOW IT WORKS RATHER THAN THE CARTE BLAUNCH
ATTIDUDE THAT CERTAIN COUNTRIES HAVE ABOUT EVERYTHING
WITHER THEY EVEN WANT IT IN A MUSEUM OR WILL DESTROY
IT BECAUSE IT IS SUCH LOW VALUE AND TO EXPENSIVE TO
STORE. IN FACT I WISH THAT I COULD BECOME A PART OF
SUCH A SERIOUS GOVERNMENT EFFORT. I HAVE A LOT OF
OTHER DEALERS WHO WOULD GET INVOLVED TO WHO WANT TO
MAINTAIN A BUSINESS WHILE RESPONSIBLY AQUIREING NEW
ARTIFACTS. IF THERE WERE REASONABLE GUIDLINES DEALERS
WOULD COOPERATE AS WILL AS PEOPLE WHO SEARCH FOR STUFF
AND IT WOULD BE BETTER FOR EVERYBODY.
IF YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR SUCH A SERIOUS STUDY WITH
AN OPEN ATTITUDE YOU COULD WELL BE SOMEBODY WHO IS
FOREVER RESPONSIBLE FOR THE PRESERVATION OF MORE WORLD
CULTURAL PROPERTY THAN ANYBODY ELSE IN THE WORLD.
BRITAIN HAS A CULTURAL LAW TO BE PROUD OF. ANYTHING
NEWLY FOUND HAS TO BE OFFERED TO THE MUSEUM COMMUNITY
AT A PRICE DETERMINED AS FAIR MARKET VALUE BY A GROUP
OF DEALERS. IF NO MUSEUM WANTS IT THEN IT GETS AN
EXPORT PERMIT. A COUNTRY LIKE EGYPT WITHOUT THE
RESOURCES COULD CLAIM ANYTHING THAT THEY WANT TO STORE
OR STUDY AND ANYTHING NOT OF SUFFICIENT INTEREST COULD
BE EXPORTED FREELY WITHOUT BEING DESTROYED. THAT WOULD
BE A REAL CULTURAL LAY THAT WOULD WORK.
BUT THIS IS NOT AN ARTIFACT AN DMY DISCUSSION IS NOT
RELEVENT HERE.
SINCERELY

In this case, you are the person very confused about my
arguments. I perfectly agree with you that there is
***nothing** illegal about picking up or collecting
natural, unmodified pieces of LDG. My discussion had
nothing to do with the collection of natural pieces of
LDG. The only mention of this was that collecting of
any kind in the area containing LDG was prohibited
because of looting of ***artifacts*** in the strewn
field area. In that case, the people collecting only
LDG, not artifacts, were victims of the pothunter
/ arrowhead collector types.

I fully agree that people should be able to collect
and take home natural and unmodified pieces of LDG.

If you would read the various posts, you would find the

degree, if at all, whether it was either illegal, legal
enforceable., unenforceable, moral, immoral, ethical, or
unethical to collect **artifacts** manufactured from
LDG and export them from Egypt and under what
circumstances.

Dean you really need to read what you are commenting

 Hi Tim,

Michael probably assumes everyone knows by now that the Michael Blood
auction is on Saturday, February 7th, but I've noticed that lately only
the time has been mentioned, not the date. (You have to go back to one
of Michael's posts on 12/21/2003 to get the date, and even in that post
you would get confused because it says it's the same night as the

[meteorite-list] Thank you!

2003-08-22 Thread Dave Harris

Hello and nice to be back,

Firstly I want to thank all of you who gave me sensible possibilities for
those mysterious possible meteorites. I have yet to go thru all of the mail
to note down what the consensus was, but one thing I did note was that no
one said they were not meteoritic - which says a lot about your collective
observational skills (how many times has Mo Yousef sent in pics only to
dismissed very rapidly!)
So, thanks for that! I shall be passing this info onto the very kind
donator of these rocks as they are not represented in my collection!
Secondly, just done another hospital bout getting my colon de-tumourised
(sorry if too much info...) and guess what, heart problems now.
44 years old and fit to be dried, stuffed and sat in a museum somewhere as a
representative of the runt of a litter.
damn. I would swear harder but there may be young 'uns reading.
Everytime I go into hospital I seem to come out sicker than before.
So, if I have now responded to your mails in a timely fashion, well, that's
why...

lovingly yours,
dave

Hello all. Steve Arnold from chicago. This is my brand new email address effective today, nov. 2nd, 2002. The old one, [EMAIL PROTECTED], is know old news. Please email me to this one please. I want to give a round of praise to jason phillips for giving me an enjoyal day. Jason is the owner of rocks from heaven.com. He has an outstanding meteorite collection. Well over 600 meteorites! Mine pales compares to his. I drove downstate to visit him today. I'll tell you, It was worth the 200 mile drive to see him and his collection. I did achive my goal. I was able to trade for the VEEVERS iron main mass. All 37 grams worth. Another score for me for my collection. I was able to pick up 1 gram of LONE TREE meteorite from Iowa, and a couple others. We were both happy of this trade. For three hours we talked, traded ,and just had a great time discussing what really drives our passion for this great hobby. Again thanks to jason and his lovely wife for inviting me into thier home to have a very nice visit. Also if want you to buy meteorites from jason, he has alot to chose from. It is all choice items, that you will not go wrong with.Again thanks jason for a day I'll soon not forget. I just hated the long drive, but it was worth it.

2002-03-08 Thread Charlie Devine

Dear listmembers,

If you're like me, you enjoy checking out Rob Elliot's website at
http://fernlea.tripod.com/forsale.html
Rob has one of the largest on-line inventories of meteorites and he
updates it frequently.
Well, about a year ago, I had my eye on a pretty NWA chondrite, then
unclassified, which Rob listed on his site. It had the provisional name
NWA 832. That name is now official and it's a killer, fresh L4 Regolith
Breccia. Before the classification was complete, I ordered a small
slice. Alas, it never arrived. Lost in shipping I guess. Rob extended
me credit for the loss and told me he would let me know when he cut more
small slices.

Well, by God, talk about happy endings!! Rob contacted me last week to
tell me he didn't have the heart to cut any more small slices because
this beauty would loose too much of its' character if he did. Instead,
he let me know he would be sending me a full slice with his complements!
Arriving today via DHL was a gorgeous 146.7g slice of NWA 832. You can
see it and other slices of this killer regolith breccia on his webpage.

Rob, this is one of the kindest and most generous things anyone has ever
done for me!
I can never repay you. Thanks so much!
You are Numero Uno on my hit parade!

Best wishes to all,
Charlie

my goodness some type type of compesation would need
to be given to you. Have you ever heard of the
Chesapeake the billion dollar gold treasure ship?
The research was so good that they literally dropped
the anchor on the ship the first day looking for it.
Thousands of hours and millions of dollars were saved
all due to research. I would like to talk to my
associate and see what we can offer you in return for
your research. Sometimes thou all the research in the
world can be futile and just plain back breaking foot
by foot work needs to be done.

WE WILL NEVER know one way or the other, Kevin, you make a great case, but

Yes. I'll pay $200 in serious USA currency (small bills if you insist,
 none
of that funny new Euro stuff) for the 1911 Al Ahali newspaper. Laugh
 if
  you like.

You wrote -- do you have an issue surrounding government employees?

Yes. I deal with Lee County, Florida officials all day on land use and
zoning issues. They're lazy, arbitrary and stupid. I tell them this and
 they
throw spitballs at me. But to the point, Ron administers an
influential
 USA
Gov. website that we USA citizens pay for. It is traditional here that
our
government information sites not stray too-far from the truth. This
site
knowingly distributes information that is false. As a civic-minded
patriot
 I
know that this is wrong. It is my duty to object.

You wrote -- If you have a personal beef with Ron over the Nakhla
story,

  Yes.

You wrote -- Just because Ron can't prove it happened, doesn't mean it
  didn't.

Really? Then everyone accused of a crime goes to jail.

You wrote -- Just because you can't prove it didn't happen, doesn't
mean
 it
  did.

Really? Illogical double negatives. What democracy are you from that
 forces a
person to prove he didn't commit a crime? Ron's law would have you
 wait
in jail until the Valera cow comes home (trust me, that's a l-o-n-g
time)
while he looks for the proof he knows exists. Luckily Cmcdon0923, in
the
USA, if there's no proof, it didn't happen and you walk a free
meteorite,
 er,
man. Have a beer on me. And take a cigar out of the box for the lady.

I want to thank CMcdon0923 for so wonderfully distilling this
discussion.
 In
the primeval past, a story claimed that a meteorite hit a dog and
killed
it. So sensational it was, that officials on the scene that refuted it
 were
ignored by the popular forces of ignorance. (What makes these forces
popular anyway? Who wants to hang around people that start their
 sentences
with -- Duh. Thank God I'm on this list with you good people.)

By effort (a pen, an envelope and a stamp) and serendipity, I easily
found
that NO evidence exists that a dog was struck by a meteorite in Egypt in
1911. Any of you would have found the same if you weren't so busy
trading
NWA's. I'm sure if Ron had discovered this he would correctly state
the
truth on the website he works for us citizens and at least one more
 asteroid
would be named after him -- Ron-- but I don't expect or want any such
 honor
  for myself (hold your applause).

And after all, NONE OF THIS IS important if we all get radioactive
anthrax
  tomorrow.

But IF WE MANAGE TO EXCAPE certain excruciating death tomorrow, than
this
 IS
the seminal meteorite story. Boys and girls, it didn't happen. Now
let's
all grow up and be good little scientists and admit it didn't happen.

BTW - Thank you each and every one for emailing me your favorite
Nakhla
 dog
(sic) photo attachments with their heads blown off, I'm touched by your
  sentiments.

Hi Mike
Ever since this discussion started, I could picture the minds of cartoonists
(like Dorothy Norton) working overtime with the added motivation of thousands of
hobbyists standing (of course with $$ in hand) on either side of the dog
wondering and wagering if it's (was?) dead or not.
