[meteorite-list] CRE ages of Nakhlites and NWA 998
Hello Everyone, I have been studying nakhlites in general and martian meteorite NWA 998 in particular. This paper, http://www-curator.jsc.nasa.gov/antmet/mmc/XXV_NWA998.pdf quotes a CRE of 9.3 m.y. using 38Ar. This paper http://www.lpi.usra.edu/meetings/lpsc2005/pdf/1137.pdf quotes a CRE age of 9.4 m.y, again using 38Ar. However, the paper further points out CRE ages using 3He and 21Ne are in better agreement (12.2 and 11.7 m.y., respectively) and are in agreement with other nakhlite CRE ages. The authors state, "All nakhlite CRE ages based on Ar are significant (sic) younger than those based on He and Ne, an unexplained characteristic also observed among some shergotite CRE ages." Does anyone know why this is? -Walter Branch __ Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

Hi Folks, I think a few of you chaps know of Abdelfattah, a Moroccan dealer - I know nowt about the chap personally. He has sent me some pics of 3.3kg of meteorites (about 8 individuals). Now, he's asking $140 a kg plus shipping - Having to make the assumption that these are just OCs - this sounds very expensive to me. If anyone has any advice or wants to see the pics - let me know. I do not think one can tell a great deal from the pics. I don't know whether or not it is worth me buying them 'on spec'. Well, the good times in Sahara are over, we all have to get used with that fact, although so many newer collectors refuse to face the truth. The Munich show is always well frequented by Moroccans (it's not so far like Tucson for them). Dramatically was the decline of the amounts of material from the 2003 to the 2004 show. 2005 again remarkably less material compared to 2004 was available. And this year? This year they hit the absolute space rock bottom. Prices are raising and raising. 0.14cents/g - I can't see any extortion with that price. I know, that all are spoiled from the narrow peak of the desert rush, but be prepared to pay more in the coming years. I recommend you, if you feel the price would be to expensive, to send the stones back and to buy from Bessey, from the rest of his stock, who can offer unclassified OCs still at old prices. There's always quite a bit of talk about dwindling supply. Who cares about supply issues if there isn't much demand 5 years from now. I sure would like to hear some feedback about demand. Especially from the top dealers like Mike, Hupes, Elliot, Blaine etc. I cant be the only collector wondering what my collection will be worth 10 or 20 years from now. I have enough invested to worry about losing 50% of what I put in. Some dealers who have been around for 20 + years should have a better idea of where its headed. Is the collector ( buyer ) base growing exponentially ? or is it holding steady ? How does it compare to 10 years ago? [meteorite-list] Re: Powellsville, Ohio unique OC AD: Ebay auction ending soon!
Dear List and Al, Al forgot important information about the Powellsville, Ohio meteorite; it has been noted that within the iron red crystals or inclusions have been found. It has NOT been determined as to what the crystals or inclusions are. Not all Powellsvile specimens exhibit this rare occurrence. This is a unique meteorite and very little is available to the market, as most all is tied up in museums and serious private collection that are very unlikely to part with it. Consider this information and bid if you are interested in the collection a unique meteorite from Ohio. Sincerely, Dirk Ross...Tokyo --- almitt <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: - Hi Dirk, I forgot how large your Powellsville was. AW: [meteorite-list] advice...
Hi Bob, read the back mails on the list, read about the total amounts of meteorites in Antarctica, in Oman and from NWA. Read how many non-irons are there in total and so on. Compare the amounts presented at the shows. Take a look on the number of finds and tkws produced by other deserts than Sahara and Oman. I'm sure you observed the prices too. Why it was possible to buy 1-2 years ago Mars on ebay in small slices at 100-150$ and at dealers at 250$ everywhere and why the people are paying now without exception 270-300$ for huge 10g slices on ebay and around 500$ for other desert Marses and Zagami now, when it was for a dealer a real hard task to get rid of that stuff 2 years ago at half of that price? That's only the beginning. Meteorites are so extraordinary rare, that you don't have to be a prophet to forebode the development to come. Meteorite market due to the limited amounts of material and the limited number of collectors and offerors can change from one year to the other. You as a collector of oriented ones, you certainly will have noticed what happens now with oriented Sikhotes and even Gaos on ebay. Pieces, where one or two years ago you could have been happy to get out 1.5-2.5$/g are now paid with 5-15$. Simply because the supply runs out. I'm collecting since 1981 and I am often sincerely shocked, how few collectors are not aware, what for exceedingly rare material they are collecting! But Bob sell! Sell as fast as you can!! Imagine if in a mass iron is housing a deadly germ from outer space, which will decimate the collectors by the hundreds! Or perhaps Ali Baba will open soon the treasure cave and myriads of tons of new meteorites will be unleashed and with his flying carpets he will be able to bring down the nowadays prices of OCs, where almost half of the price are only the transportation costs. But before buy an atlas, identify the deserts of the Earth and make your stats from the Bulletin database. Well, I think others will enlighten you better, I have to care now to find a roasted goose... Martin -Ursprüngliche Nachricht- Von: Bob Evans [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Gesendet: Samstag, 11. Re: [meteorite-list] NEW photos of the silicated iron. Formation mechanism?
Hi everyone - Well, Mike certainly has obtained a rare specimen. The question is "Why are silicated irons of this type so rare?" At the risk of revealing my stupidity, I'd like to ask if it could be that they are cometary origin, representing cometary core material? That might account for the low temperature of formation of the inclusions, which Elton pointed out. good hunting, Ed --- Michael Farmer <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > http://www.meteoriteguy.com/collection/Patagoniairon.htm > > > Hi everyone, I just received the packaged containing > the main mass and remaining slices of the silicated > iron from Argentina. > They are amazing, the crystals got larger and more > interesting the further into this meteorite we cut! > I will let the photos speak for themselves. Re: [meteorite-list] Strewn field help
The orientation of a strewn field isn't necessarily related closely to the path of the meteor. In particular, if the meteorites were produced by a single terminal explosion, the strewn field orientation will be determined almost solely by high altitude winds. Only if the meteorites are produced by a fairly long fragmentation event will the orientation of the strewn field be significantly affected by the meteor path, and even here winds can significantly distort the field. I would not make the assumption that because the meteor came from east to west the strewn field is oblong in an east/west axis. You need to interview witnesses in order to determine as accurately as possible where the burst occurred, and then search a circular area underneath that point. Maybe the nakhlites underwent a(nother) high temperature event (collision?) while floating in space. Maybe this event influenced the cosmogenic nuclides of 38Ar in a different way than those of 4He and 21Ne. Maybe one of the radio- genic clocks was thus (partially) reset. I don't know if such a *p a r t i a l* resetting is possible. Maybe this high temperature event led to a preferential loss of argon while the NWA 998 nakhlite was able to retain its amount of radio- genic helium and neon. SO, we all know that oil and water don't mix - the oil will float on the water. What about in zero-g? Would they mix? (think how easy it'd be to make mayo!) or would they still separate out if shaken together? It obviously has a relationship between certain meteorite classes (ie mesos) ie, whether molten silicates would float on molten iron... but I just cannot visualise whether oil on water would still float. Seems a really silly question now I;ve written it down - but nope, just cannot figure what an oil/water mix would do. Any ideas (Bernd.??) Re: [meteorite-list] Slightly OT...but sttill space related!
In microgravity, oil and water still won't mix, but they won't separate the way they do under gravity. The reason they don't mix is because oil has very low solubility in water. When you mix them vigorously, you get what's called an emulsion- in this case very small droplets of oil floating in the water. Unless you use special ingredients (as in mayo) to maintain the emulsion, the droplets will separate because of their buoyancy (which is meaningless in microgravity). What I'd expect to happen in space is that the individual oil droplets will gradually coalesce as they collide (a statistical process). Eventually, you'll have a single blob of oil drifting around in (or on) a single blob of water. Fw: [meteorite-list] CRE ages of Nakhlites and NWA 998
Hi, Walter, List There are disputes about the K-Ar dating of Martian rocks because of the high level of 36Ar in the atmosphere and the likelihood of losing 40K from the surface rocks. One group suggests the 38Ar dates are distorted (see reference below). "because atmospheric and cosmogenic 40Ar and 36Ar would confound accurate measurements and calibration, and because 40Ar may be lost from the sample over time..." One problem could be that the isotope levels of the Martian rock are whacky even before it's blasted off the planet. - Free-browsing copy of a good source of information on the arguments on Martian geology: http://fermat.nap.edu/books/0309089174/html -- It would be difficult to explain the 38Ar discrepancies as a loss of the gas from the sample in transit, because the crystal lattice "gaps" that would let some of the 38Ar escape from the rock would let ALL the 3He out, since the He atom is much smaller than the 38Ar atom and "leaks out" much more readily (as much as I hate to disagree with Bernd). Heating would allow the 3He to escape first. Sterling K. http://history.nasa.gov/SP-401/ch12.htm Immiscible Liquids Two liquids that will not mix, such as oil and water, are said to be immiscible. When vigorously shaken, the two liquids can become intermingled, but one does not dissolve in the other. Eventually, the force of gravity will cause the heavier liquid to separate from the lighter, producing two distinct layers. Experiments were made in Skylab to determine what happens when immiscible liquids are mixed in zero gravity. Oil and water were placed in transparent plastic vials. By swinging the vials on the end of a string, the two liquids were separated by centrifugal force. The vials were then shaken to disperse the liquids and observed to see whether separation took place. While a gravity force was not present to separate the liquids, some separation by coalescence was possible. Small drops of the same liquid joined as they came into contact, eventually into significant amounts. On Earth, a dispersion of the two liquids separated completely in 10 seconds. In Skylab, the dispersions were observed for a period of 10 hours, during which time only a very small amount of coalescence occurred. Low gravity thus provided an opportunity to form a dispersion of immiscible liquids which could be solidified in that form. The demonstration showed that composite materials with unique properties could be manufactured by such a process. If I price the better available Weston at 60$, why not Drake Creek too? Gosh, if I wouldn’t be so lazy, I’d load up all the micromounts on ebay… Let’s google a little bit for BÉRÉBA – some write, that despite the tkw of 18kg, there was only 1kg or so ever available. I enter: “Bereba meteorite sale” Results: Dealer A 180$/g Dealer B 250$/g Dealer C 150$/g Dealer D is just working on his page, but I know them, he’s not the cheapest with Bereba Captain B - ask him, for what he was selling them out. That was google. I’ve a flat fragment = nice surface here, with a super-nice net of shock veins – 6.18g. No, I’m sober – what about 75$/g ? Hey and if you are a good boy or girl, I’ll give you the fine larger fragment from our show case – remember the Munich pics. 33.41g it has – for 70$/g. Huh, I had some argues with my compadre, who was not amused, that in my show report here on the list, I praised all other tables and dealers, but not or own presentation and assortment on the Munich show. Perhaps some eyewitnesses could make some words here, whether they liked our booth or not, to disprove the hypothesis that modesty kills. Hum, what more I find in our boxes.. Oman main masses seems to get popular again, Huh Mike? DHOFAR 558 Zufar, Oman Found 2001 Tkw 680g Main Mass 651g 400$. Zaklodzie Possible fall, Ungrouped E-Anchondrite, yummy. Small slices up to 8g 50buxx a gram. You want a COSMIC ONION, but you feel a revulsion to buy from Chicago’s pride? Conatct me, we have a slice with such an incredible accident of cosmic nature left. Aaand –Heirs don’t beat me up! Only, solely and by way of the exception of St.Martin’s Day: A single slice of our new Moon 4483 – 1.015g for 1000$. But now I have to stop, before I ruin myself. And don’t come next week and ask me for such prices, it is a special. Email for details And now to all to you a nice weekend (and a fine St.Martin’s day). Martin (PS. If I only could remember the price of our Air with Paris label… I think I’ll keep it for the other Martin on the list). -- Message: 2 Date: Sat, 11 Nov 2006 07:23:45 -0800 (PST) From: "E.P. AW: [meteorite-list] Zero G oil and water OT...but still space related!
Yes, it is at present, I think, an experiment conducted on the ESA-mission in the ISS. Is a project from "school in space". www.esa.int/SPECIALS/Astrolab/SEMUMEAATME_1.html Children should make such an emulsion at school and compare it to what will happen in space. I haven't the time, but Dave google around and search for: Oil Emulsion Experiment Best! November 2006 23:18 An: Dave Harris; metlist Betreff: [meteorite-list] Zero G oil and water OT...but still space related! http://history.nasa.gov/SP-401/ch12.htm Immiscible Liquids Two liquids that will not mix, such as oil and water, are said to be immiscible. Hullo, Well, I am a bit stumped by a question I was asked by one of my sons...and I couldn't answer it for certain - I've asked one chap, a good mate of mine, who has an astrophysics masters degree, and he proposed an answer to my query but I am not sure he's right... Any ideas (Bernd.??) [meteorite-list] Puyallup Gem and Mineral Show
Dear List, I just got back from the Puyallup Gem and Mineral show and I am pleased. I just ordered over $2,000.00 in cutting and polishing supplies yesterday and wished I had saved my money. I met this old-timer at the show who manufactures his own cutting equipment including saws, diamond blades and polishing disks. I purchased some supplies thinking they would be average in quality. Usually a blade is good for a single cut through a Ureilite and then it is done. I brought out my worst Ureilite and cut the entire stone on one this old codger's blades. This means his blades are at least 20 times as good as the most popular brands. I then mounted a four inch .004 blade on my wafer saw and measured absolute zero run-out, mounted two more with the same result, amazing! I measured the kerf and it was exactly .006 on every blade, talk about consistency and to think I used to pay well over $200.00 each for blades that were no where near as consistent. I then rough polished a couple of Ureilite surfaces on the 80 grit Judge Pad and it chewed through them like candy. I would hate to get a knuckle caught on one of these. That is not all, he had everything I could imagine including foot pedal power switches, vices with micrometer adjustable slide rails and every tool you would ever need, all custom made. I asked about future availability in case these items turned out to be good and he said, "you will be back." I then talked to him about wire saws and he said, "I could get you into a 14" model for less than $900.00" I asked him two times to make sure and he said "Only an idiot would spend $50,000.00 on a wire-saw, give me there names, I have some property in Idaho I need to get rid of." He said he would send documents on the Taurus model and that with a few cheap modifications, it is every bit as good as the $50,000.00 models. I asked if he would be in Tucson and he said yes. I asked him if I could reorder products if I found them to my liking. He responded that he doesn't design consumables rather items built the old fashion way made to last and that he would see me in Tucson if there was anything I needed and that he is always on the road peddling his goods between manufacturing them. He said most manufactures want the blades to wear out so that they can make money on selling replacements. He then stated "They know that 3M has the best diamond bonding agents but still use the cheap equivalent of wood glue instead." He explained as the wood glue gets warm the diamonds shift to the position of least resistance making for lousy cutting and that the 3M bonding agent grips the bort like a mother fr and I think he is right. I will find out where he will be in Tucson and let others know. If you live in Washington State, the show is still going on tomorrow so you may want to take advantage of old-timer, Steve with excellent product. He is in the back of the exhibition hall near the golden gate. [meteorite-list] Sorry List removal mistake.
No I don't want to be removed from this list. I gave an out of town Aussie access to my PC as the library was closed today for Veterans Day and he couldn't understand why he had all this meteorite stuff when he looked up his hotmail and sent that unsubscribe. Then latter realized he was in my mailbox instead of his. Just got back here myself.Didn't know he did that. Nice to know so many cared. [meteorite-list] [eBay] ending in about 2 days
Hello all, I have another batch of ebay stuff ending in about two days. http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZlaserprogramQQhtZ-1QQfrppZ50QQfsopZ1QQfsooZ1QQrdZ0? Please scroll past the assorted laser stuff to find meteorites. On an unrelated note it seems interestingly enough that a number of meteorite people are also interested in lasers. An unusual convergance of intrests, no? This week up for grabs is my last thin slice of my awsome LL3.10 - I have 2 more small chunks that I may turn into slices sometime down the road, but they represent only a few more grams of material. Another piece of my new NWA angrite - getting down to the smaller pieces on that one. A very nice large surface area winonaite. More acapulcoite, seymchan, polymict diogenite, kainsaz, and a few others. Also in this weeks round of auctions are a few pieces of newly recovered material. A small part slice from a 95g stone that is paired to nwa 011/2400 - this is the original 'it must be from mercury' material - although that theory has now been largely discounted due to the calculated age of formation. (see: http://www.lpi.usra.edu/meetings/metsoc2003/pdf/5103.pdf ) Finally something special. Last on the list is an AWSOME piece of R chondrite. Based on the unique apearance of this material alone I think this to be paired to the R 3-6 that has been around lately in small fragments. Well this is no fragment but a large, thin full slice! Look at the pics and judge for yourself http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280046347738&indexURL=4#ebayphotohosting even if you arent buying click on the high resolution versions of the images. the breccia of highly metamorphosed material in contrast with the vivid black type three is really worth taking the time to see! I only have 2 more slices of this material, one is likely sold to a friend of mine and another is no where near as nice, so if you are in the market for the best of the best jump on this opportunity as it likely wont be repeated! Both the nwa 011/2400 and the R material have had type spceimins deposited with a nomcom aproved laboratory and numbers specific to these stones will be forthcomming shortly. The classification of both stones as as an R and paired to nwa 011 has already been confirmed by the science guys.
