If a parking meter expires, they know it, and you are ticketed promptly. I hope this doesn't come to Springfield. Doesn't anyone realize that some laws are made as a deterrent, but the original intent was probably not to punish a person every single time there is a little infraction. Examples would be running red lights, going over the time limit on a parking meter or a 2-hr. parking limit on a street, etc. The same could be true for any traffic violation. Most of these are small infractions. True, they should not be encouraged or endorsed, but to be punished via camera, satellite, and wireless networks leaves no room for error (or for grace). What on the list of capital improvements should be moved ahead of the Wayfinding signs in priority? You talked about prioritizing, but didn't name any projects that should be a higher priority. Unless there is something this money could be used for that is a higher priority, why wouldn't we move ahead with the signs? February 24, 2009 Washington On Display Our rule-makers can't follow their own rules. President Obama sets a new standard, forbidding lobbyists from being hired on in the White House. Then he promptly gives himself a waiver because, lo and behold, he just needs a certain lobbyist. When politicians stand on principle, it's usually so that principle can't get up. We have a Treasury secretary, one Timothy Geitner, who didn't pay his taxes . . . well, not until he was picked to be Treasury secretary. A Washington Post headline called Geitner “too big to fail”; the U.S. Senate confirmed him. Then there's Roland Burris, the new U.S. Senator from Illinois. He now admits that he didn't tell “the whole truth” when he testified before the Illinois House panel trying to impeach then-Governor Rod Blagojevich. Of course, Burris continues to deny what he is admitting. Burris had been asked directly about being blagojeviched to raise money to get his seat in the U.S. Senate. But Burris said nothing at the time about being asked by the governor's brother to raise funds. Burris also conveniently forgot to mention that he, in fact, had tried to raise money for the governor. Unsuccessfully. Burris needs to go, and he's far from alone. Think of Charles Rangel's wrangled perks, his tax problems, his network of rent-controlled apartments. Instead, all these masterminds will stay in power, allegedly to “fix” our economy. But they're the ones in need of “fixing.” This is Common Sense. I'm Paul Jacob. What might be a better priority CIP than Wayfinder Signs?

For starters on selecting another 'better' priority for spending taxpayers' capital money, how about: 1) any road project that would make it easier for people to drive around town? We can pick from 28 council approved CIP projects. 2) any storm sewer project that would keep a neighborhood or street from flooding the next time we have a 3 inch rain? # council approved CIP projects = 23. Pick one. 3) any sanitary sewer system improvement that would keep the nasty stuff flowing down hill and being treated properly before release, so that it meets DNR and the EPA regulations? # council approved CIP projects = 23. Pick one. 4) any side walk improvement program that would allow school kids to stay OUT of streets as they are walking to and from school. # council approved projects = 4. Pick one. 5) any capital improvement project that might help the Springfield Police Department run more efficiently ? Ooops! There isn't a single one. Police activities don't seem to rate too high on Council's and Administration's priority list. Excuse me, but Wayfinder Signs in the city don't rate too high in my personal opinion book, compared to the priority Springfield obviously puts on installing these signs. If you have any idea the projects the City wants to spend our tax money on, it's very easy to conclude their spending priorities are NOT our priorities.
