It was interesting when Jonathan Agar presented his book at the Institute of
Engineering Technology IET (c2003) that when some of the audience (who'd
created/delivered mobile communications) said yes, but you've missed out some
really important stuff ... he replied by saying that as an historian he can
only write about what has already been recorded and there wasn't that much to
go on.
As Rich says, thanks for the thread. I don't have a short Wired type of article
to offer although I'm working to fill some of the gaps that are still remaining
with some articles on mobile communications history - and mobile phones in
particular. If this thread prompts any unanswered questions I'd be interested
to know what they are, do get in touch.

Subject: Re: [mobile-society] good history of mobile comm article?
Dear Katy
Here is a chapter from a mobile phone textbook I wrote with Nicola Green which
draws on Agar and others but tries to be more reflective on what counts as a
history.
Best wishes

Thanks Lee!
I was worried that Agar was too long, but I agree - it is the best out there.
I might have to stretch it out to 2 classes or something.
Thanks!!

Hi Katy,
I use Agar's first chapter of Constant Touch as my background reading, as well
as Carolyn Marvin's first chapter. I've attached the syllabus here for my
mobile comm class. It's from 2010 so it's kind of outdated at this point, but
I thought it might be helpful.
Cheers,
Lee

Hi all.
I've been looking for a good history of mobile phones article - not terribly
long - for an undergraduate mobile comm class.
Any suggestions? Sometime along the lines of a good Wired or Slate or
Atlantic article would be best.
Thanks,
Katy
