[MMouse]: anyone need extra tickets to the Columbus show?

2000-09-16 Thread Jamie Clark

Due to poor communication between my friends and I, we ended up with 9
tickets for 7 people for the show tonight in Columbus.

They cost us $16.50 each, and are at least $19 each today through
ticketmaster. If anybody sitting in around in the great midwest needs 2
tickets for $20 total, email me back ASAP and we can set up the swap.

Remember, the show doesnt start till 8:15pm EST, so anyone of you
sitting around in Detroit, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Cleveland or Huntington
can come see a show still.

First come,Fisrt Serve.

So lemme get this straight, you just go up to the sound guy and say hey, I
want to plug in to your board and record this show? What do you tip - %20?
Do you buy them drinks? They don't care? I don't know why they would care,
I've just never thought about it or how one went about doing a soundboard
recording like that. That would be cool because you could probably leave
the recorder there and go enjoy the show.. come back and switch tapes if

Well, I should clarify... The shows I've taped off the soundboard have
not been exactly huge shows.. Off the top of my head, I've taped Silver
Scooter, Number One Cup, Tiara (many times), Moviola (many times) off the
board at the same venue. It's always the same sound person that works the
venue and they dont care if I tape (I always have an OK from the band
anyways). I dont tip, and up until last April, I couldnt even buy alcohol
for myself.. so if anything, I was just really polite, and stayed out of
the way.

However, you might want to check with the band if it's at a larger venue,
like Mouse seesm to be hitting on this tour. Does anyone (Eric
Satnik?) know if Mouse has a traveling sound guy? Phil Ek? I'd also say
that soundboard recording is going to be pretty hard to get done since
they're on Sony and Sony will have this fear of people selling $40 copies
of SBD CDR's, so they wont let anyone tape. This happend to Wilco back in
the mid 90's.

My mind is drawing a blank as to what 'lapel' mic is... but in my 4 years
of taping shows, I've come to some conclusions...

1) You can never afford the mic you like.
2) You can never get away from noisy people.

I dont have the specific model numbers of the mics I'm going to refer to,
but some quality mics in my opinion are...

The Audio Technia 822 - I think this runs around $300? It's a small
handheld mic I believe? It is kinda bass heavy in booming venues.

Sony EMS-907 (?) - This is a mic about the size of a fudgesicle. It sounds
pretty remarkable for it's $100 price tag.

Core Sounds Binauruals - These are 2 small mics that are used optimally
when you are close to the PA. For an extra $50, you can get a bass
roll-off filter which eliminates the low-end rumble. Total costs usually
run in the neighborhood of $260 or so.

Sonic Studio something something 6. These are similar to the Core Sound
mics but run about $500. These have a clear, rich sound and produce a very
true sound. I cant afford these.

I have a pair of Core Sounds, another pair of 'generic' core sounds, and
a very old mic that came with my sony d3 pro-analog deck, and I like the
sony mic the best. It lacks some of the low end, but it sounds true to the
environment. I currently record on a Sony D8 dat deck with some type oh
mic. I'm going to try to get the Modest Mouse show in Columbus on DAT/MP3.

 would like to know..

If you plan on doing any editing to the recording, go for it in stereo.
I've taped some shows off the soundboard where the right channel has
'clipped' and the left channel is fine. Afterwards, you can just mix the
left channel into both channels so you dont have a flawed recording. 10
seconds of mono is better than one loud pop or scratch.

In audience tapes, I can tell the stereo.. Usually one channel will record
2 to 4 decibels than the other channel. So if some drunk is yelling on
your right, the left will barely pick it up.

as for the recording level, make sure its not just a volume control. i thought mine
could adjust levels during recording too, but apparently it cant, becoz i recorded an
entire show on 0 level and it still came out distorted. its more important to make s
ure that the levels arent peaking constantly (ie hitting the last level indicator
every two seconds).

if i remember right, the Sony MD recorders dont let you adjust recording
levels on the fly. You have to hit pause, then mess with the levels. This
is the big advantage of the Sharp recorders, where you can soften or
louden the recording level while it's recording.

as for recording into the soundboard, its not hard, there's usually an auxiliary out
line for you to plug the mono cable into, but having spoken to a lot of sound guys
they say the sound isnt as good, becoz the soundboard focuses predominantly on the voc
als, bass drums and guitar amps which makes it a little uneven.

Most soundboards I've seen half 1/4 inch jacks, so usually you need two
1/4 to 1/8 inch adapters. They're had for about $2 each at Radio Shack.
Some soundboards also have seperate mixes for the aux output. When I tape at
one venue in town, I always push the bass and gtr up in the mix going to
my DAT machine.

You sure this is up to date? I saw the exact same bands play at last

[MMouse]: Dirty Fingernails Live

2000-02-05 Thread Jamie Clark

I got my sound card to function somewhat properly, and I went ahead and encoded
some of the more interesting live mouse songs I have on tape...

First up... The 8 minute ver. of Dirty Fingernails live in Bowling Green, OH.
The last 5 minutes is basically Isaac making up new verses on the spot. And it
has the first usage of the words 'premature ejaculantern' that I know about.

http://www.corsmith.yi.org/~jamclark/mp3/mouse/modest_mouse-dirty_fingernails(1997.10.26-ohio).mp3

If there's demand, I can encode some more stuff... like a very bizarre version
of 'Ohio' from Ontario 98, and the 'I Want All Your Transformers' jam.

I've got the Yo-Yo version of Dirty Fingernails that I encoded from CD. I
just need someplace to upload it to.

I've also got the Magic Eye version of 'Mice Eat Cheese' that I encoded.
Is that the same as the demo version? I havent listened to them in ages.

albums recently released i need to hear first(new karate, metronome,
