[MOSAIC] possible weekly study of strategies?

2009-06-07 Thread Sharon Hall
I am fairly new to this group and now that I'm out for the summer I feel
like I have time to really think about how to use the different strategies
as well as research more information. Forgive me if this has been done, but
would anyone be interested in doing a weekly study of each of the strategies
- for example, one week on questioning, the next on visualizing, etc? Each
week we could talk about different resources you use, books, strategies for
teaching and sharing any materials you have created. I'd be willing to
create a website linking anything shared so that we could all have ready
access to the materials.

If this has been done already or you know of somewhere with all of this
information, please let me know. If you are interested in doing a weekly
strategy study, please respond and perhaps we can set something up.

like I have time to really think about how to use the different
strategies
as well as research more information. Forgive me if this has been done,
but
would anyone be interested in doing a weekly study of each of the
strategies
- for example, one week on questioning, the next on visualizing, etc?
Each
week we could talk about different resources you use, books, strategies
for

teaching and sharing any materials you have created. I'd be willing to
create a website linking anything shared so that we could all have ready
access to the materials.

If this has been done already or you know of somewhere with all of this
information, please let me know. If you are interested in doing a weekly
strategy study, please respond and perhaps we can set something up.

Hi all,

My name is Ali and I am currently a Pre-K teacher working towards my
Masters in Early Childhood Education. My question for everyone is it
okay to have the children find a book everytime there are a few
minutes to spare before transitions or does forced reading decrease

discussion focusing on the strategies.  I would like to implement this
full-fledged in my first grade classroom in the fall.  Thanks for suggesting
this activity.

Subject: [MOSAIC] possible weekly study of strategies?

[MOSAIC] Please stop me too on Weekly Study thread

2009-06-07 Thread Keith Mack
Please, please do not send any more me too, or include me messages on
the weekly study idea.

My guess is that we've sent out over 40,000 individual messages with this in
the body. This puts a tremendous burden on the server and really doesn't
really help us to organize much.

If the me-to's continue we'll need to moderate the list until this dies
down. So please, always remember to be careful to think a bit before
replying with just a few words.

I'm not sure if anyone has volunteered time to help organize and then
moderate this group. If there is a person or two interested, please contact
me (km...@literacyworkshop.org) or Jennifer (cnjpal...@aol.com).

Jennifer and I have already exchanged some ideas on this and are willing to
work with a leadership team to get this organized. Once done we can share
details with Mosaic and how to get involved.

Thanks,

Keith Mack

Re: [MOSAIC] reading as a time waster?

2009-06-07 Thread Kare
Ali wrote: My question for everyone is it okay to have the children find a
book everytime there are a few minutes to spare before transitions or does
forced reading decrease their interest? Any thoughts?
Maybe rotate the way that a few minutes are spent. One time allow children
to find a book, another time have students sing a favorite song once more,
and another time count something fun such as how many noses there are in the
group. That way, choosing a book gets categorized as one of many ways that
people choose to have fun.

Do you really feel that schools force children to read? Schools also force
children to go outside at recess time to play. I have a hard time viewing
this as a problem.
