Re: [MOSAIC] Saddened by Administration Mandate: Students and Choice R eading In Class
I don't consider this rambling. I think these stories are important. I think they should be posted on Facebook, shared with parents, other teachers, family members, the community. They should be written as letters to the editor of local and national papers, and included as blog comments when applicable. The idea that if a child can read, he/she can pass the science portion of the CA Standards test is absolutely ludicrous. No matter how language literate you are, that is not going to help you discuss the water cycle, make decisions about the Periodic Table of Elements, etc. And while I'm at it, who in their right mind decided that the Periodic Table of Elements was good fifth grade material? I personally never heard of the periodic table until I was in high school, and I seem to have functioned pretty well all my life. I am retired now, but I think it is just a matter of time before some teacher with actual backbone stands up and sues their school district for evaluating them on something they were forced to do. And I will cheer on that day. Renee On May 27, 2012, at 6:11 PM, Gail wrote: Last year a professor of Sociology came to a meeting of teachers at my school to discuss implementing Restorative Justice Circles with our students. During the discussion it was put forth that just as children are bullied, so are teachers and so are administrators--including superintendents of school districts. I never thought of our situation as the result of our being bullied. Furthermore last year our DAIT (intervention specialists) team instructed our district to not teach science at all in grades K-5. Their rationale was that we needed to focus on English language development and reading. They said if the 5th grade students could read, then they would pass the science portion of the CA Standards Test. This year we were told that the 5th grade science portion is 20% of our total CST score. I know I'm rambling, but this is a ridiculous game. [MOSAIC] Experienced teachers have lives that should be considered enthnographic research
Please don't retire. I have heard so many older teachers say that the conditions of teaching are causing them to retire. So many of our new teachers, who have been raised in these direct instruction schools, have the example of teacher-proof pedagogy as their hegemony. They have been raised in a culture that demands research-based instruction. More experienced teachers have lives that should be considered enthnographic research. If research-based instruction is the litmus test of good teaching we need to fight experiment research with our combined ethnographic research. I would love to have teachers share on a thread some anecdotal stories of struggling readers who have learned to read without a program. [MOSAIC] engaging reading for boys at middle school
Greetings! I am enjoying the conversations so much and just finished printing out (a rarity of course) the Allington Six T's etc. I quit getting digest because it was hard to follow what with all the formatting and so on -- but I'm also finding it a bit hard to keep up, with individual posts (time will tell) (amidst all the other email of normal life!). I wanted to suggest this (though I believe the person suggested 'offlist') as to high interest, summer reading, etc. I just finished reading Touching Spirit Bear and its sequel Ghost of Spirit Bear by Ben Mikaelson. I'd been reading the first novel with some normally unmotivated weak middle school readers a few weeks back (boys) and thinking it had so much inherent appeal and drama. The story begins with a boy from Minnesota (wild teen in lots of trouble) who gets diverted from jail via a traditional Circle Justice (native style and BC bound). He is sent to an island to live, surviving on his own, for a year. The story is very dramatic with profound themes and much discussable at many points. Mainly I was also impressed with how easy the reading level was. Short(ish), captivating, well worthwhile. I see he's written many others but I only know these two. I have also followed intently the discussion of admin's push against real reading etc. Thanks everyone! Re: [MOSAIC] Saddened by Administration Mandate: Students and Choice Reading In Class (Susan Chicvara)
That is truly sad, and I feel your pain. It's terrible when administrators don't understand what best practices are, and they are the ones making all of the decisions! You'll have to decide now, which is the most important thing: keeping your job or your integrity. That's a tough choice! You may have to keep you job; most of us do. At my school, it's all about direct instruction, fidelity to programs, and following the script. I am facing similar choices myself. Remember that your principal will likely not be at your school forever, so hopefully he or she will be moving on to greener pastures soon. Perhaps you will get a more reasonable principal next time with a better knowledge of curriculum and instruction. [MOSAIC] question for Terry Decker/supervising ed techs
Hi, Terry. I couldn't quite tell what your address was so am emailing you here. You can email me off-list at cag...@myfairpoint.net. I would like to talk about supervising ed techs/EA's/other staff, as I'm supervising 1 ed tech for RTI, and I'm not sure I'm doing it the best it can be done. I'm open to anyone else being in on the conversation as well. Thanks. Cathy We have done Walk to Read for 3 years now, and it has made a positive difference in the reading success of the students at my school. Classroom teachers are still using the reading series for whole class instruction and are using literacy workshop too. We have a mandated 90 minutes of reading instruction, and the Walk to Read is 30-35 minutes of that. Our district funded 4 literacy assistants, who, along with the Title 1 staff, help us to place every child in appropriate materials for their rate and level of instruction. As the Title 1 reading specialist, I supervise the lit EAs and Title staff. Additionally, I pull Tier 3 students for another dose of focused instruction in the afternoon. \ We are moving to an RtI-like process next year, which I eagerly anticipate.
