Re: [MOSAIC] literacy models
As of right now, we don't have a basal and at my level we use novels. But, that will probably change next year and it's not because of our principal. A lot of our teachers want a basal because - I'm quoting here - it will tell me what to do! I can't believe this! I'm getting so frustrated because I simply think they're being lazy. I have repeatedly shared websites, resources, and yahoogroups with them but now of them choose to use them. I think only one other teacher in the building has even heard of MOT or Strategies That Work. - Original Message - Is there any schools/districts who are not invested in a program or series and using a comprehensive literacy model approach finding data and research providing the effectiveness? I am wondering because I am in a school that once had a balanced literacy model implemented then when administration and times changed, so did the model and they went with a basal series to provide continuity which some teachers need and love and left others feeling hopeless. I have been looking at models again but know that with funding issues, implementing a model in its entirety may not be the most effective if it doesn't get implemented in it entirety! So, are there any schools that have created their own literacy frameworks and allows it to grow and change based on their students' needs? ___ Mosaic mailing list Mosaic@literacyworkshop.org To unsubscribe or modify your membership please go to http://literacyworkshop.org/mailman/options/mosaic_literacyworkshop.org. Re: [MOSAIC] RTI - Any info on AIMS Web?
We've been using AIMSWeb for 3 years now for at least K-5 (I think maybe higher also). The fluency CBMs are just like DIBELS. Aimsweb also has a comprehension maze test and a couple of math tests. It gives a lot of reports as to how a student is doing based on class, school, etc... It's an okay start as to identifying students for RTI services. I don't think you should use it solely to place students into RTI intervention groups.
The maze test is suppose to be the comprehension part. It is a cloze activity that has the students choose the correct words from a choice of 3. I don't like the comprehension part because I would like it to be higher level thinking versus simply a cloze activity. But, at least the Maze test is better than nothing for a comprehension test like the DIBELS program. As for the math, there are two tests that I know of - one is a math computation and the other is a problem solving test. We don't use EDM so I'm not sure they correlate. The reports are easy to generate once all the scores have been loaded into the program. Loading the scores in is also very easy. Re: [MOSAIC] departmentalization
I don't know of any specific research but I do know from my situation in 5th grade it's hard to do especially with scheduling. Scheduling seems to be a nightmare with us because of RTI, Specials, Lunch, and SMe (computer program everyone does). Since we are departmentalized our intervention teachers have problems scheduling our kids because of the times that they need to pull our kids - we don't have the right students, therefore, they end up taking our students during our reading time which they aren't suppose to be doing but there just isn't enough time in the day when our kids aren't departmentalized. Re: [MOSAIC] RIT with Stephanie Harvey continued... - Kim
What were your organizers like that you used while you read? Are they in the files section? I struggle with giving the students grades over their comprehension of their novels. Right now, I have them complete a reflection journal as the read. They predict before reading, write wonderings during reading, and write a one sentence summary and a reflection statement after reading. They do this each day. I'm just not sure how to grade their journals. Regarding the toolkit...I just jumped in with both feet and let it guide me. I was so impressed with how deep and rich the student conversatons were (with one another) and as a class. We did *not* do any of the typical comprehension questions at the end of our reading. Rather, we completed organizers while we read, left tracks of our thinking, paired and shared, had group discussions, then came back together as group. The students actually transferred the strategies to their other subjects! ___ Mosaic mailing list Mosaic@literacyworkshop.org To unsubscribe or modify your membership please go to http://literacyworkshop.org/mailman/options/mosaic_literacyworkshop.org.
