Re: [MOSAIC] digest burden
Most people on digest are getting Plain Text which is often cumbersome for a variety of reasons. There are two additional possibilities: MIME and RSS FEED. PLAIN TEXT (one text message with all posts contained) When you sign up for digest you are put on PLAIN TEXT because it is the most compatible format. This bundles all the day's messages into one text message. No HTML formatting so the only links will be URL's. MIME (sends messages as attachments) This still comes as a single daily message, but instead of have each posting listed sequentially in a single, long message, an index message comes, listing each of the daily postings, and each posting comes as an attachment. The MIME form of the digest can be easier to read but requires the reader to open individual attachments (this can be confusing). You can try the MIME version by changing your settings at http://literacyworkshop.org/mailman/listinfo/mosaic_literacyworkshop.org. RSS FEED (another form of subscription) http://www.mail-archive.com/mosaic@literacyworkshop.org/maillist.xml The link above will take you to the RSS feed for this list. It's basically just a list of recent messages. Think of it like a newspaper where everyday you get the articles from the list. If you click on the Subscribe link, it will put a bookmark in your browser so you can easily return to the site. Some people use an RSS service to list all of their subscriptions because it offers a lot of options (these are usually free). I use http://www.newsgator.com. ARCHIVES http://snipurl.com/MosaicArchive A link to the archives is at the end of every message. Of all the choices this might be the cleanest way to view the list traffic. You can search the list and also sort by date or by thread. If you haven't every visited the archives, I encourage you to take a look at it as an alternative wading through a long digest. [MOSAIC] Digest Burden
Keith, I have to agree and disagree with you. There is a burden involved with being a digest subscriber, but it is not 20 off topic messages. As a subscriber to the digest, I have to tell everyone that the biggest burden to digest subscribers is folks who absent-mindedly forget to delete the previous discussion text before posting their reply. I know it's not intentional, but it does scramble things up significantly. (A real comprehension issue for me!) Somemtimes I cannot tell who is responding, or what they are saying because everything is so heavily embedded in previous posts and all the junk that's tagged onto each post. I've been guilty of this in the past, and don't claim that I've totally erradicated it from my habits, but I do try to only include the most succint points I'm responding to when I reply. And I appreciate others who do, as well. Just my two cents. Re: [MOSAIC] digest burden
I have to agree 100%. There are many days when I am so busy that I end up deleting the entire digest because I don't have the time to wade through all the muck and figure out who's replying to what. It's too bad, because I know I miss out on some good discussions. I have a thought and possible solution, but I'm not technical, so the moderators would have to decide if it's possible. When I receive the digest, there's a topic list before the messages start - this is nice, because I can quickly look to see if I'm interested in reading further. The problem, though, is when (for instance) there are 20 posts and I'm only interested in one topic, which is covered in (for example) posts 2, 8, 9, 15, and 19. So I want to scroll down to read the 2nd post (and then the 8th, and so on) but sometimes people have replied to a digest without deleting all the messages, so to read it in order, you'd be rereading a bunch that you already read - like a digest within a digest. For example, it might go something like: message 1, 2, (1), 3, 4, 5, (1, 2, 3, 4), with the messages in parenthesis being repeats that weren't deleted from someone's reply. Trying to quickly scroll through it is cofusing, because when you stop and see message 4, you don't know if you still have to scroll through messages 5-7 to get to the message 8 that you want, or if you've gone too far and are reading (for example) message 11, which happens to contain all of the digest messages in it because someone didn't delete before hitting send. My suggested solution, if possible - can the topic lists at the beginning include a link that brings you right to that message and then a back to top button? I subscribe to the FlyLady digest and it's like this - I think all the yahoo group digests are like this. I don't know if it's possible to do that with this group, even though it's not a yahoo group.
