[mou] Kentucky Warbler, Minneapolis (Roberts)

2008-05-27 Thread tapac...@halcyon.ws
After braving suburban blight yesterday to twitch the Kentucky Warbler, I
found another male this morning in Roberts Sanctuary at Lake Harriet. Not
far in from the main east entrance, in a row of brush off to the right.
(I saw it from 25 yards down the main trail that branches off to the right.)

In the short time I observed it, it was very secretive and not singing, unlike
the one in the Louisiana Swamp, which was singing continually (presumably
in a frustrated attempt to find a mate).

Not many passage migrants at Roberts, several Swainson's Thrushes, a couple
of Blackpolls...

[mou] ruddy turnstones (Detroit Lakes)

2008-05-27 Thread Beau Shroyer

Right now there are 9 ruddy turnstones on city beach in DL. They are being
flushed by city workers and pedestrians, but seem to be hanging between Legion
Rd. and Rossman Ave.

[mou] Birding Around Bagley-Long

2008-05-27 Thread Larson Kelly
Memorial Day was no picnic. Cold, Drizzle, Wind. Went to the drive-in
for a Banana Split and parked at a small pond in Bagley near the
lumber yard. We watched two Green Herons chasing each other in
circles around the pond. Not sure what they were up to.

At Sandy Lake, Clearwater Cty 28 at the Bridge over the Clearwater
River, we found good shorebird habitat. Lots of exposed mud flats.
With only binoculars I was able to to key out only a few of the
species present. Five American Golden Plover, 3 Dunlin, Spotted
Sandpiper, Lesser Yellowlegs, and, based on size, about a dozen
Semipalmated Plover.

One Brown Thrasher seen in a driveway in town.

At the Farm the feeders were very active all day. Topping the colour
charts were four Indigo Buntings, at least nine Baltimore Orioles, a
dozen Rose-breasted Grosbeak and over one hundred Goldfinch.
Hummingbirds have been sticking pretty close to the feeders, maybe
eight of them. Heard Golden-winged Warbler on Sunday and found them
in the young Poplar stands Monday evening.

[mou] Henslow's Sparrow Bell's Vireo

2008-05-27 Thread Kim R Eckert
Yesterday, May 26, there were a Henslow's Sparrow at Great River
Bluffs State Park in Winona Co and 2 Bell's Vireos at McCarthy Lake
WMA in Wabasha Co.

The Henslow's was easily heard and seen along the state park entrance
road, just W of the first parking area you come to next to the stand
of pines. (As many birders are aware, this field has been an amazingly
consistent site for this normally ephemeral species almost every year
since at least the 1960s.)

The Bell's Vireos were seen and heard near the SW corner of the large
wet thicket about 1/4 mi W of the gate and WMA sign on Wabasha Co Rd
84. (This site has also been consistent for this highly local species
for several years.)

Both these birds were found during this past weekend's Minn Birding
Weekend trip, which covered Houston Co on May 24 25 and small parts
of Winona and Wabasha counties on May 26. Some other birds of note were:

Least Bittern - heard-only at the wetlands just E of Mound Prairie,
along Houston Co Rd 21

Yellow-billed Cuckoo - 2 locations: along the road off Hwy 16, on the
E side of Mound Prairie SNA, Houston Co; and at the Zumbro River
bridge on Wabasha Co Rd 84

Black-billed Cuckoo - heard-only near the campground at Beaver Creek
Valley State Park, Houston Co

Acadian Flycatcher - several along the main hiking trail at Beaver
Creek Valley

Tufted Titmouse - 2 locations along Hillside Rd, Houston Co: ~2 mi S
of Co Rd 3, and just W of Reno

Cerulean Warbler - heard-only along Hillside Rd just W of Reno

Prothonotary Warbler - several at 3 Houston Co locations: Millstone
Landing along Hwy 26, ~ 1 mi E of La Crescent on Shore Acres Rd, and
Sheperd's Marsh in La Crescent

Louisiana Waterthrush - 2 locations along the main hiking trail at
Beaver Creek Valley (with the one by the bridge at the start of the
trail easiest to see)

Dickcissel - along Wabasha Co Rd 84, just N of the McCarthy Lake WMA
sign

In addition, several later-than-usual migrants were found: Olive-sided
Flycatcher, Blue-headed Vireo, Philadelphia Vireo, Swainson's Thrush,
Tennessee Warbler, Chestnut-sided Warbler, Blackpoll Warbler, N
Waterthrush, Mourning Warbler, and Wilson's Warbler.

[mou] Caspian Tern Lake Nokomis S. Mpls

2008-05-27 Thread Maureen Lundgren
This morning May 27th at about 10 a.m. I saw what I believe was a caspian
tern on the shoreline of the big beach at Lake Nokomis in south Minneapolis.
I saw several this winter while in Mexico on the Sea of Cortez and was very
surprised to see one here.

There were a couple of ring-billed gulls nearby but no other terns.
