[mou] Buff-breasted Sandpiper Dakota County
At 10:30 AM found a Buff-breasted Sandpiper at Jirik Sod farms. The bird was seen from 200th between Blaine ave. and the 1st house to the west on the south side. At 10:45 am a Merlin appeared and the Buff-breasted Sandpiper escaped to the north. I would think it would return once things calm down. Probably the same bird reported by Jim Mattsson last week. [mou] Lark Sparrow, Buff-breasted Sandpiper Park Point 8-24
10:15-11:30 AM Imm. Lark Sparrow seen on west (harborward) side of the Park Point recreation area beach house, generally in the short lawn between the stone steps and the southern picnic shelter. Ben got a few photos, and after one alarming flush the bird was gracious enough to fly back in and show itself for a few other interested humans. I seem to encounter Vesper Sparrows in Duluth every spring--more seldom in autumn--but this was my first Lark Sparrow in the city in 10 years of birding here. I wonder where it came from. Also seen, mostly on the lake side, were around 20 Baird's Sandpipers with one Buff-breasted Sandpiper loosely associating, plus Semipalmated Sandpiper and Semipalmated Plover. The Baird's I saw were all juveniles, and very confiding. As was the Buff-breasted which approached Ben within about 5 feet. I was interested to watch it forage at the water's edge very much like small Calidris, then pick its way up the beach until it disappeared into the dune grass. Mostly it kept to the water's edge and showed only a hint of the high-stepping gait I see in this species when it's foraging on lawn or fields. Notably absent were the Purple Martins which kept me company through all the Red-throated Loon searches in July; a few Barn Swallows flew over, and the resident Eastern Kingbirds were still feeding their fledglings, finding food the swarms of juvenile Starlings and Ring-billed Gulls didn't get first. [mou] No Buff-breasted; 8 Shorebird sp. (Dakota Co.)
The title sadly says it all. Thanks a lot, Mr. Merlin. (Please note that for those trying to access Jirik Sod Farms in Farmington later this year, about 1/2 a mile of Chippendale Ave. is closed. Take Byscane Ln. down to 200th instead.) Jim Otto kindly pointed out a mudflat area in Hastings. (just off of 10th St., near the Vermillion River.) Chad Gustafson and I found 8 shorebird species there. While there was nothing out of the ordinary, it was a sweet little spot. Hennepin Co: In Golden Valley on Aug. 20, new migrants included Canada Warbler and O-S Flycatcher. The next day yeilded a B-B Cuckoo, and this morning I finally found a FOS Tennesee Warbler. Good birding! [mou] Buff-breasted Sandpipers in Nicollet County
I found 3 Buff-breasted Sandpipers at the WMA just north of Nicollet on Hwy 111 this morning about 11:30. The second pond is now dry, but the ground is still wet making for good habitat for BBSA and a handful of other shorebirds.
