[mou-net] Bald Eagle scavenges opossum
Hi All--Today's blog posting relates to a Bald Eagle presumably scavenging a road-killed opossum. The opossum photo is not for the faint of heart. The eagle was found on the north end of the Carleton College Arboretum in Dakota Co. http://dantallmansbirdblog.blogspot.com dan -- Dan or Erika Tallman Northfield, Minnesota http://sites.google.com/site/tallmanorum http://dantallmansbirdblog.blogspot.com http://picasaweb.google.com/danerika daner...@gmail.com the best shod travel with wet feet Beware of all enterprises that require new clothes --Thoreau Join or Leave mou-net: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net Archives: http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html
[mou-net] Pacific Loon- Lake Koronis
(Post must not have made it through last night)...~4pm found the suspected Pacific Loon seen from the South side of the lake in the Bayport (Breezewood road) westernmost finger-bay of Lake Koronis. Easily seen from the boat access there. (SW of Paynesville,S on CR20 from Hwy 23, then left 1/4mi on Breezewood, R on Bayport Rd). Also, perhaps of interest, counted 195 Cackling Geese last Fri (29th) in Albany's North Lake. mjb Join or Leave mou-net: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net Archives: http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html

[mou-net] Long-tailed Duck
I just found the duck at the far NE corner of E Vadnais Lake. I parked on Centerville across from Garceau's Hardware and walked down to the lake. The long-tailed was swimming and (mostly) diving with 30 commom goldeneyes near hundreds of ring-necked ducks. Also, yesterday I stopped at Brownsville in far SE MN to watch the hundreds of noisy tundra swans.
[mou-net] Cattle Egret in Aitkin County
There has been a young CATTLE EGRET north of Aitkin for the last three days. It is about 8 miles north of the Mississippi River bridge on CR 1 among the horses at the Matt Hurd farm. Also seen this weekend were BLACK-BILLED MAGPIES along CR 1 and along CR 15 west of town, a NORTHERN SHRIKE along CR 10 north of town and a late EASTERN MEADOWLARK at the Rice Lake NWR.Warren Nelson Join or Leave mou-net: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net Archives: http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html

[mou-net] Harlequin Duck, Red-throated Loons in Grand Marais
On both Saturday Sunday this past weekend, Oct 30-31, a female- plumaged Harlequin Duck was seen in Grand Marais, Cook Co., and 2 imm Red-throated Loons appeared there today, Nov 1. The Harlequin Duck was seen by 20 birders participating in the so-called annual Muffin Run field trip up the North Shore: on Saturday afternoon it was in the harbor near the E breakwater, and on Sunday morning it was relocated just outside the harbor by the W breakwater. And the Red-throated Loons were seen by 5 of us this morning as they swam and dove on L Superior not too far out from the W breakwater. Viewing conditions at the time were excellent with calm winds, a smooth lake surface, and the sun to the E with the loons mostly to the SW of us. Other highlights seen up the N Shore this past weekend by our group included: - 2-3 Surf Scoters, Grand Marais - 32 White-winged Scoters, near Five Mile Rock; also 1 at Taconite Harbor - 20 Black Scoters, Paradise Beach; also 2 in Two Harbors and 1 in Grand Marias - Long-tailed Ducks, various locations, with largest flock near Five Mile Rock - imm Golden Eagle, Stony Point - 2nd-winter Thayer's Gull, Grand Marais (Nov 1) - 4-5 Black-backed Woodpeckers, various locations - 2 Townsend's Solitaires, Two Harbors: 1 near Agate Bay lighthouse, 1 near 1st St. 3rd Ave. - late Clay-colored and Savannah sparrows, Grand Marais Finally, Barb Denny Martin just called to report they relocated the Pacific Loon reported last week in Duluth. It was on the lake side of Park Point out from 31st Street. [mou-net] Lake Waconia - Surf Scoter, Loons Gulls
With limited time this evening I was able to relocate the Surf Scoter originally reported by John Cyrus. It was located on the south-east part of Lake Waconia. I could not find any other Black Scoters. I also saw nearly 70 Loons but all we too distant and light conditions too poor to determine if there were any other than Common Loons. Also noteworthy was probably the largest concentration of gulls I've ever seen on this lake. When I left at 6:15pm there were easily over 2,000 gulls present with more streaming in to roost. Most were Ring-billed but many Bonparte's and at least one Franklin's was present. This would be a good time place to look for unusual gulls if one has the time. Please note that while there are places to scan the lake from the south-east side, please be aware of the many No Parking areas. Also, the park on the south-east side requires a Carver County Parks permit sticker (daily or annual). This area was twice patrolled by the Carver County Sherriff while I was here this evening.
