[mou-net] summer tanager - Kandiyohi co.
Had a first year male summer tanager in my feeders for about an hour Sunday afternoon. Of course, I jinxed myself when I called a friend who hadn't seen one. The bird was not seen after that. I should note my wife was the person who first saw what looked like a brightly colored house finch on steroids, with a beak that doesn't fit. [mou-net] N. Mockingbird – Duluth
7:35 a.m. 9417 Congdon Blvd (North Shore Scenic Drive, ~1/4 mile W of McQuade) Unfamiliar call/warble got my attention. First glance flying: white in wings, slender, blue jay size. Perched top of spruce: very long tail, white wing patch, no facial mask. Flew to lawn at 9416. Good looks for 5+ minutes: generally grey with very dark wings and tail. Dark line from eye to beak, which was slim and dark without a hook. Lighter chin, chest and belly. Long legs, grey/flesh colored. Runs, not spooked by flicker. Last seen 7:50 a top spruce at 9426, further NE up the shore. Wrote notes, then checked field guides to confirm Northern Mockingbird. Finally, my personally found. [mou-net] Crosby Farm St. Paul - 17 Warblers Plus Other Migrants
In what was supposed to be a quick scouting trip to check the flooding status at Crosby Farm (in advance of a birding class I'm leading on Tuesday), I ended up spending an action packed hour watching new migrants. I arrived just after this morning's thunderstorms ended and was quickly treated to a large mixed warbler flock on the south side of the pond that is near the west parking lot. Numbers and diversity were both pretty impressive and I easily picked up a quick 17 warbler species (list below), plus 3 Scarlet Tanagers, lots of Least Flycatchers, Gray-cheeked Thrush, etc. The loop around this pond was almost completely passable (though there were many muddy spots and a couple spots of about an inch of water. The boardwalk at the east end was impassable, therefore it is not possible to make the complete loop. I also drove down to the east entrance of the park by 35-E and noted that the small parking lot there was roped off, apparently because of flooding below. The nearest parking for this area would be on-street at Homer St. about 1/2 mile west. This is the time of the year that you'll be glad you moved here. Tom and I are looking forward to leading a hike at the Isanti County, Anderson Park on May 14th. We'd be excited to have you join us on the third annual hike that we've held there. The Park now has a great new board walk through an alder thicket near the lake's edge that should give us a very interesting view of warbles that we usually only get to hear. We'll have a spotting scope or two to check out water foul out on the lakes too. If you have time enough for a casual birding hike, we plan to have an early picnic lunch in the new picnic shelter where we can watch the active bluebirds while we eat. If not, we've had a few folks that simply head back when they need to leave. The Park is very easy to get to by traveling north on Interstate 35 to the first exit PAST Stacy, MN onto County Road #17. Turn left on #17 and over the freeway. Go about 4.5 miles due west until the road turns slightly north. In about a 1/4 mile the roads turns back to the west ( you'll see a large white cross in the church cemetery straight ahead). Turn RIGHT onto CR#18 at this corner. 1 mile past this little county church brings you to the Anderson Park entrance on the right. We'll meet at the picnic shelter which is about 1/4 mile east along the gravel park road. The website with park map is at: http://www.andersonparkfriends-isanti.org/ Wild River State Park is having a flower hike next weekend. I'll be leading a birding hike in June there.
