[mou-net] Wiley WPA shorebird site Big Stone County

2012-05-04 Thread Sara_Vacek
Wanted to alert folks to a good shorebird site in Big Stone County. After
many years of stagnant water levels and carp infestation, we worked with
Ducks Unlimited last fall to install a pump at Wiley Waterfowl Production
Area. We are doing a temporary drawdown this spring, and the birds are
loving it. Yesterday afternoon there were several hundred shorebirds and
waterfowl feeding at the site. It was very windy so I wasn't able to ID
much, but at a minimum the shorebirds included greater and lesser
yellowlegs, pectoral sandpipers, dowitcher, willet, and some peeps.

Wiley WPA is located in sections 12 and 13 of Otrey Township, or 8 miles
north and 3 miles east of Odessa. The basin is bisected by a road, so
there are several locations for easy viewing.

And if shorebirds aren't your thing, there are many other great prairie and
marsh species around Big Stone County and the rest of Morris WMD! In the
last two weeks we've been seeing goose broods, upland sandpipers, marsh
wrens, marbled godwits, American bittern, sora, etc.

[mou-net] White-faced Ibis - Hennepin County

2012-05-04 Thread Mike Majeski
There were two ibis at the old cedar ave bridge this afternoon between
1:00-2:00. One was clearly a white-faced ibis with a white border around
reddish facial skin and behind eye. The other ibis seemingly lacked any white
border around the facial skin or behind eye though it did have dull pink facial
skin and brighter pinkish color at the leg joint suggesting white-faced. Maybe
someone could get a clearer look at it if the birds move closer to the platform
as they were about 300 feet away to the southeast.

[mou-net] mn river nwr - rice lake - update

2012-05-04 Thread William Marengo
With recent rains the water level of Rice Lake has risen, mudflats have
vanished and the shorebird numbers have dropped. This afternoon I counted
just under 100 shorebirds of three species. Almost all were Lesser
Yellowlegs with a few Greater Yellowlegs and two Wilson's Phalaropes.

I am checking this lake two-three times per week. If conditions improve, I
will repost.

Regards,,,

[mou-net] Whimbrel migrations

2012-05-04 Thread marshall or janet howe/mcmillen
When I found an interior whimbrel a couple of weeks ago, I recalled the
interesting research project on whimbrels based on the Eastern Shore of
Virginia. Whimbrels are being trapped there in spring and some are being
equipped with satellite transmitters. This area is a very important spring
stopover for whimbrels moving north from the Caribbean and South America.
The Nature Conservancy has played a major role in preserving this area and
supporting the whimbrel study. The web site below has a wonderful 7-minute
video of this project which tracks the migration of one bird named Hope
over several seasons. Radio-tracking results don't get any better than
this (nor do natural history videos), so I highly recommend you view this
at http://littlenatureshow.org/
