Just a little update - for those of you who are interested, the male Rufous
Hummingbird is still coming to our feeder today. You are welcome to look at
it at 2024 Fairmount Ave., St. Paul. Thanks for all of your suggestions. We
will be sure that the feeder is out and not frozen for as long as it
appears.

[mou-net] Mew Gull follow-up--not relocated yet

2014-11-09 Thread Peter Nichols
I am following up on the Mew Gull report from yesterday afternoon at Lake
Calhoun.

The bird was found and identified by David Pavlik very close to shore by
the parking lot in the southwest corner of the lake. The gull was visible
for maybe 20-30 minutes before we lost track of it while scanning the other
gulls. It was last seen just behind the farthest (northernmost) floating
dock. Shortly after that, hundreds of gulls all took flight, circled, and
eventually landed again. There were many hundreds of gulls farther north
on the lake, well out of scope range. Other birders showed up, but to my
knowledge, no one relocated the Mew Gull. It could easily still be in the
area, given the large number of gulls present on the lake (and the other
area lakes).

David posted pictures on the Minnesota Birding facebook page and there is
absolutely no question on the ID; various expert birders in the group all
agree that the bird was an adult Mew Gull.

There was also an adult Thayer's Gull and at least one Lesser Black-backed
Gull present.

[mou-net] Mew Gull picture request

2014-11-09 Thread Jason Caddy
Would it be possible for those who have pictures of the Lake Calhoun Mew Gull
to post those pictures on the M.O.U. website. The Minnesota Birding Facebook
group is a closed, private group and not accessible to everyone, whereas if it
were on the M.O.U. website people could access the pictures right away. There
was a similar situation with a birding group in Southern California and some
people get pretty frustrated being cut out of the loop on rare birds. I know
there is no requirement for people to share their information but it would be
nice.

Cheers,

[mou-net] proof of residency

2014-11-09 Thread Tom Bell
Last Friday at Carpenter Nature Center we trapped a Black-capped Chickadee that
was banded there in February of 2011 as a second year or older bird. So the
bird is more than five years old, which is old for a chickadee, and was
retraped three months later the same year and again on 3/1/2013, 5/16/2014 and
11/7/2014.

2014-11-09 Thread David Pavlik
Birders,

I've posted two photos of the Mew Gull on my Flickr account. I haven't looked
into getting my photos on the MOU website, so hopefully this works for
everyone. I'll be submitting a full report to the MOURC when I get a chance.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/pavlikphotography/

Good luck, I wouldn't be surprised if it is still in the area.

[mou-net] 2nd SNOW - Meeker County - Grove City

2014-11-09 Thread Josh Wallestad
I was in Duluth on my way home from birding the North Shore when I got notice
that Jeff
Grotte found a Snowy Owl north of Grove City. I plead the fifth on how long it
took me to
get to Grove City, but I beat dusk and the coming snow and was able to see the
owl. When
I saw it, it was on top of a large, metal support structure for the
transmission line that runs
northwest/southeast just to the northwest of the intersection of MN Hwy 4 and
355th St.
This structure was west of MN Hwy 4 in the middle of a field, so my views were
distant.
Jeff and others were able to view it much closer on the power poles along MN 4.

The owl showed fairly heavy barring which would make it different from the
all-white owl
my friend Mike had seen from a distance of 10 yards. Jeff Grotte actually
talked to Mike
and showed him the pictures of today's owl, and Mike said it was a different
bird.

Great find Jeff!

Maybe this is the tip of a Snowy Owl spear?

Please keep me in the loop if you find these owls in the Meeker/Kandiyohi area.
