[mou] Black-bellied Whistling Duck
Yesterday afternoon (around 4PM) I could not find the bird at the usual spot (medium sized pond with many dead trees). So I went north to look for it on the much larger lake just a few hundred yards away, where there were many geese, coots, widgeons, and at least a few Wood Ducks. While standing there I saw the BBWD in flight, heading east as if to cross Hwy 169. Rather than cross the highway it apparently circled around south and west, because when I returned to the dead tree pond it was there. So it appears that the bird also spends some time on this larger lake. Paul Budde Minneapolis -- next part -- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... [mou] Black-bellied Whistling Duck
The Black-bellied Whistling Duck was in the same location as previously reported at Anderson Lakes Park. It first circled low, calling over the pond, then moved onto a dead log, and was last seen feeding on grass on the far side of the pond between 9 and 9:30 this morning. Thanks to those that pointed me in the right direction and of course to those that first discovered it. You know the story - scan the pond for 45 minutes - check adjacent locations - start heading out slowly, reluctantly - then someone yells The Black-bellied Whistling Duck was present at Anderson Park this morning around 8:50 AM (but not earlier). Beautiful bird! Al Schirmacher Princeton, MN Mille Lacs Sherburne Counties PS Thanks, Bob, for yelling, and Denny/Barb for sharing excellent scope views!

For those looking for the most popular duck in MN at the moment, a couple of observations that may be helpful.? The directions to the spot are good.? The path down to the pond's shore is not so obvious.? You can scan from the top of the hill or by the shore.? The duck has been seen yesterday and today in the company of Wood Ducks.? As you're looking at the pond, its favored area is to the back and left.? There's a log lying right along the shore, but in the water.? The grassy area behind that is generally where I observed the duck today from 9:30-10:00ish.? Others I talked to said he was in the same area last night.? If it's not immediately visible, be patient.? The grass camouflages it well, but as it feeds and moves around you can get nice looks.? A scope helps but is not necessary. [mou] Black-bellied Whistling-Duck Refound
This morning I refound the Black-bellied Whistling-Duck found and reported by Jim Pifher and Jean Ranweiler off of Anderson Lakes Pwky in Hennepin County. The bird was observed in the exact location posted and was sitting on a log in the water between 9 and 10 am when I was there, and still present when I left. Thanks to Jim and Jean for the great find and getting the news out! Conny Brunell Richfield, Hennepin Co. -- next part -- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... [mou] Black-bellied Whistling-Duck Refound
Plenty of people out to see this Duck today, bird generally unphased. I struggled with the sun distance but here are some pics, hopefully someone gets some better ones ( please post them - the color contrasts on this bird are stunning.) These were taken on the opposite side of the pond, another path leads down from the main one. http://www.bolioshot.com/photography/pages/images/bbwd1al1029.jpg http://www.bolioshot.com/photography/pages/images/bbwd2al1029.jpg http://www.bolioshot.com/photography/pages/images/bbwd3al1029.jpg Jason Bolish -Original Message- From: mou-net-bounces at moumn.org [mailto:mou-net-bounces at moumn.org]On Behalf Of Conny Brunell Sent: Monday, October 29, 2007 10:31 AM To: mou-net at moumn.org; MN Bird Net Subject: [mou] Black-bellied Whistling-Duck Refound This morning I refound the Black-bellied Whistling-Duck found and reported by Jim Pifher and Jean Ranweiler off of Anderson Lakes Pwky in Hennepin County. The duck was still present at the far side of the pond as of 6:10 PM tonight. Hopefully it will hang around for another day or two. It was easy to miss when it was feeding in the grass - watch for the orange-red bill! Joel Claus Eden Prairie -- next part -- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... [mou] Black-bellied Whistling-Duck - not refound
I just got a call from Jeff Stephenson that he, Chuck Krulas, Jerry Pruett, John Hockema and Dedrick Benz tried to re-find the reported Black-bellied Whistling-Duck at Rice Lake NWR in Aitkin but were unsuccessful. There were others there looking as well but no one was able to locate the bird. A Black-bellied Whistling Duck was observed on Rice Lake National Wildlife Refuge, by Pat and Dick Cabe (birders from out of state w/ 700 North American birds on their lists). Directions: Travel the wildlife drive, past the observation platform on Rice Lake, past the west gate and watch the wetlands on the south side of the road, the road is still a one way at this point. I would really like a confirmation of this species. Please email observations my way. Thank you!
