I agree that the Minneapolis Awards should continue. Too many people in the
City volunteer and volunteer and barely get a THANKS.This shows to the
world that we do apprieciate the volunteers work in Minneapolis.

Actually, Fred -- a bean feed at the towers might be a wonderful way to celebrate such an award ceremony. Every year could be a different thing at a different place. This might help to celebrate in many ways and to include many more people in the event.

One year in a park, another at the towers, another year some other fine place...

I think it is a good thing to continue as well. With a bit of creativity and citizen involvement, this could cost the taxpayers little or nothing.

The closer to the grassroots this event is, the more authenticity it will have, and the more meaning for all of us.

Just a few thoughts...

doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

I certainly understand things need to be cut, and the Minneapolis Awards
are far from essential. That said (as I said when I got mine), it is
precisely in times like these that the city needs volunteers more and
more.

I don't think anyone who has won one of these awards did it for the
award. And no one will stop doing what they do because the awards don't
exist. But it is amazing how gratifying a frame, a piece of glass, a
finely written piece of paper, and a neat City of Minneapolis pin can be
to someone who willingly donates their time. I know that was multiplied
times the 10 winners and their proud friends and family.

I hope a way can be found to save the awards. I won't be winning
another, but I think this is an important thing for the community and
future winners. I'd wager they are a truly minimal expense (Re: CM
Colvin Roy's fair comment, I would at least like to know how much the
Awards cost to put on, to justify it being cut).

Perhaps a foundation or even a group of volunteers, ala Southwest
Citizens for Civic Engagement, can take over the awards to keep the
recognition going. Perhaps the Citizens Fair and Minneapolis Awards can
be combined with another event (the Aquatennial?) to further reduce
expenses and, in the case of the Citizens Fair at least, increase
traffic.

I agree with my fellow award winner Mr. Brauer.

Someone form a Non-Profit and start soliciting money from the little people,
CO's, and everyone in between. This can be made into the Evant'e Sociale of
the Fall season. Take my name and email down now and sign me up for the
board and volunteer committee.

[Mpls] Mpls Awards - no more!

2002-11-17 Thread Fran Guminga
Annie Young is right on the mark regarding the demise of the Minneapolis
Awards. My fellow nominator and I were grousing about holding it at the
Convention Center rather than a park building, or at City Hall's new Council
Chambers or the City Hall lobby.

Maybe the Park Board could offer its new headquarters on the river as a
venue on a warm summer night.

How about holding it at different city locations each year and highlight
that particular community's volunteers along with the city-wide awardees?

How about Marshall Fields or Honeywell or Xcel Energy or the Chamber of
Commerce picking up the tab for some cookies and coffee and the mailings?
Most awardees would be happy with a certificarte in a folder, eliminating
the cost of a frame.

There are a lot of ways to keep the thing going with a little imagination
and some minimal corporate financing. As Annie said, we have already
substituted the dinners at International Market Square (which participants
paid for, anyway) for coffee and cookies.

What's next, eliminating 24 hour snowplowing? Oh, wait a minute . . .

One time back in the '90s, I got to attend an awards dinner that honored
my neighbor Barb Lickness, among others. It was a dress-up affair at
International Square and I made a point of attending because whatever
Barb and my political differences at the time, I appreciated her work
and felt I could convey my respect by attending this event in her honor.
Another time, another honoree and different details but that time I was
too ill to attend.

We plain Janes have a real sense of mission and the trappings of high
appointed and elected office are often not in our sights. We're just
being good citizens as we see it.

I've also been at more upscale events from time to time over the years

I am saddened that there is a recommendation to end
the Minneapolis Awards. When I received mine in 1994,
I was deeply honored. For me, it felt like the
activists version of being crowned Miss America. It
was a wonderful evening and I recieved a beautiful
plaque and a beautiful bouquet from Roger Beck.

The award is packed away right now, but, I recall it
talked about leaving this city a better place than I
found it. I think that says it all.

However, it wasn't the dinner or the plaque that I
remember the most. It was how grateful I was that my
peers noticed my contributions and thought enough of
the community work I was doing to nominate me for this
honor.

Craig, you are right. This should be the social event
of the year. There is nothing preventing us from
preserving this. I am sure if we found an alternate
source of funding, that the city would be more than
happy to continue this. I am going to make a few calls
tomorrow and find out what's up.

I would be more than happy to work with some others on
this to find a way to continue this prestigious honor
to citizen activists. Perhaps we could write some
grants to see if we can't fund this through the
private sector or through foundations.

E-mail me off list if you are interested.

Barb Lickness
1994 Minneapolis Award Winner (and very humbled by it)

[Mpls] Mpls Awards - no more!

2002-11-16 Thread Annie Young
I testified before the Ways and Means Committee Friday morning for the Park
Board and told of the story from the Awards Ceremony about the volunteer
who requested Air Conditioning be installed at Luxton Park and how it can't
happen with all the budget cuts we have looming before us this year ( and
years to come I presume).
Sandy Colvin Roy then responded with a remark about how we must all take
our lumps That this year is the last year of the Minneapolis Awards - it is
on the budget chopping block. That is a crying shame - there must be some
way to acknowledge the great work of citizens in Minneapolis where it
doesn't cost an arm and a leg. Years ago the Awards ceremony was a large,
well attended sit down dinner, sometimes held at International Market
Square. The event has gotten sparse. Held at the Convention Center and
serving cookies and punch - how much cheaper can it get? May I suggest
hold it in a park (like Boom Island) at a different time of year but good
grief - let us figure out how to continue this honoring ceremony.
So for the moment, David and Steven enjoy the glory - it may not happen
again for a long time.
For the moment,

Those of you who have AOL or MSN - sorry, they force you to send in

Occasionally, plain text email carries MIME formatting - the details

I have to manually forward MIME- and HTML-formatted posts that are

Finally, thank you to all the members for their kind words and
congratulations on Steve's and my City of Minneapolis awards. Being amid
all the other volunteers and their great works was a true honor, and Ron
was an accurate reporter; I was and am humbled. I love the city and
being recognized by others is wonderful.

The accomplishments of the other winners deserve proper attention. In
the dark fiscal days ahead, their works are a reminder of the great
human spirit to give that will keep Minneapolis a fine place to live.

I'd like to thank all the members who have turned this concept into a
valuable reality; without your wise and passionate thoughts, all the
management in the world wouldn't mean much. So thank you to all.
