Re: [Mpls] The Mayor breaks his promise to do filmed interveiw re: homelessness
A side note: in India, due to unusual cold temperature in the past few days, over a thousand people died. Since, in India, there were about 45,000 people born every single day, I do not think they are at risk of being depopulated at this time. (These figures are from 2000, which was the latest year I could find published population figures. One fifth (21%) of the babies born in the world are now born in India.) And I don't see what this original statement, or my additional information, has to do with Minneapolis Issues. Tim Bonham, Ward 12, Standish-Ericsson
Re: [Mpls] The Mayor breaks his promise to do filmed interveiw re: homelessness
I've always been curious where homeless people go when they can't stay in shelters and public places? How does Minneapolis handle this issue? Well, one guy who I met last winter spent some nights in the shelters. Other nights, he'd sneak/break into someone's porch or break into an abandoned building or empty house. Other times, he'd sleep in jail. I can't be sure about this last one, but I think sometimes he'd break into a house where the people living in it were out of town. Then during the day he'd steal small items that looked valuable and try and get people to buy them. He was just one guy and I'm sure others handle things differently. Some have friends who will let them stay from time to time. Some have found regular squat houses that are abandondoned and used by a group of folks. Some will move from place to place catching a little sleep here and there, but never really be camping. Some will find a place that's out of sight and hope not to get caught. And some die. - Jason Goray, Sheridan, NE __ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Mail Plus - Powerful. Affordable. The mayor's use of time and actions (or lack thereof) are fair game, but imagination such as the comment below is insult, forbidden by the list rules. David Brauer List manager The solution: take at random 10 homeless people, dress them up in 3-piece suits and Rolex watches, deliver them by Woodvale Country Club limo and chauffeur, and put out the rumor that they might win big $$$ in a pending class action suit. Rybek might then find time for them. --David Shove ___ Minneapolis Issues Forum - A City-focused Civic Discussion - Mn E-Democracy Post messages to: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Subscribe, Unsubscribe, Digest, and more: http://e-democracy.org/mpls ___ Minneapolis Issues Forum - A City-focused Civic Discussion - Mn E-Democracy Post messages to: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Subscribe, Unsubscribe, Digest, and more: http://e-democracy.org/mpls

it is obvious that David S. is engaging in political satire about a powerful elected offical in order to make a statement of how he perceives his values. it is ashame to censor this form of commentary. [Mpls] The Mayor breaks his promise to do filmed interveiw re: homelessness
There are plenty of rooms at the downtown Radisson Hotel for homeless persons in Minneapolis - AND WE, THE TAXPAYERS, HAVE ALREADY PAID $20 MILLION FOR THE ACCOMMODATION. Let's use of the housing we have already paid for - $500 million in the past ten years!! The heavily subsidized real estate developers should step up to the plate and DONATE their vacant apartments to house the homeless. Rather than pay an ADDITIONAL $700 per month per mat on the floor, we should save the money and use our available inventory - there are LOTS of vacancies. I agree. Every Non-Profit with taxpayer dollars behind it should be completely full. Regardless of quality of resident. The taxpayers paid for the housing. ACORN,504,UP AND OUT OF POVERTY NOW, CATHOLIC CHARITIES, MICAH, shame on all of you for not hitting the streets yesterday and demanding that all direct city subsidized housing be full with people now. [Mpls] The Mayor breaks his promise to do filmed interveiw re: homelessness
Several weeks ago Mayor Rybak agreed to do a filmed interview I requested regarding the fact that people are being forced into the streets due to shelters being overcrowded and the Catch-22 that, if forced to the streets, they are breaking city ordinances that prohibit sleeping, camping in public spaces or sleeping in their car. Mayor Rybak e-mailed me : "I have your request and appreciate it. I think this filming is a good idea and have told me scheduler to get it on the schedule" I made it clear to the mayor he would be asked to support the campout that is taking place to demand repeal of those laws and also to ask if he would advocate to the city council for repeal of those laws as they unfairly target people who are homeless. After a couple weeks of the schedulers telling me they would get back to me about a time, I was told today by his aide today that "The Mayor is too busy to do the interview with you." When I told this aide that the Mayor had agreed in writing to the interview (see above) she said "He makes commitments without being aware of his schedule much of the time." With every effort to be accommodating, I told her that all she had to do was name a day and time and I would make it work. She said that "He is just too busy." This is pretty much the way the issue of poverty and homelessness has been dealt with over the years... so I wish I could say I am surprised. At the forum where homeless people spoke out Friday a week ago, even before they started speaking, Gail Dorfman told them that the Mayor and other officials may have to leave early again I guess they are just too busy. The Mayor stayed ,I would guess ,about 20 minutes for that two hour forum. Margaret Hastings-Mpls., Kingfield
