Hi,

Hmm.. i guess you should have a look at Centreon
(http://www.centreon.com/) or any other similar package like that one,
cause i think that what you are looking for.
It uses nagios aswell..

Or just seek for the right addon at http://www.monitoringexchange.org

Re: [Nagios-users] Notifications severely impacting Nagios performance. Ideas?

2009-08-25 Thread Jim Avery
2009/8/25 Ryan Bowlby rbowlb...@yahoo.com:
 Hello Everyone,

 We are experiencing issues with Nagios notifications. Apparently when a large
 amount of services become critical and trigger notifications the system all
 but stops processing new service check results (passive). The last check
 times in the web interface stop updating until notifications are disabled.

 Tailing the nagios.log file during this issue shows mostly notifications and
 hardly any check results being processed. As soon as I temporarily disable
 notifications - system wide - the passive check results literally fly off the
 screen, and all the stale results in the web interface clear up quickly.

 How does everyone handle this issue? Obviously the notifications are a
 bottleneck. Has anyone configured notifications to be dropped in a file or
 fifo to be processed by an external daemon? Something like OCP daemon if
 anyone is familiar with it.

 Obviously parent child relationships would prove useful in curbing the
 notifications, but implementation of relationships is a while off (5 D.C.s
 lot's a data to have to collect). Any suggestions would be greatly
 appreciated!

If you have set retry_check_interval to a very low value compared with
normal_check_interval, then inevitably Nagios will be working a lot
harder if a lot of hosts are down at the same time.

hth (a bit),

Jim

[Nagios-users] Change port in NSC.ini in other value than 12489 or 5666, is this possible ?

2009-08-25 Thread Arlen Drina
Hi all,

I have to set up nagios monitorig in maze of firewalls, and due to that
I am facing some strange requirements :)
For windows monitoring I am using NSClient++ and in NSC.ini is specified port

port=12489 or port=5666

 in section modules I have uncommented,

FileLogger.dll
CheckSystem.dll
CheckDisk.dll
NSClientListener.dll
SysTray.dll
CheckEventLog.dll
CheckHelpers.dll

I realized in NSClientListener.dll is uncommented, it works no mater
does port 12489 or
port 5666 is specfied in port line
port=
it alway bind it to port 12489 and I understant it.

When I try to change port to let say 8344 and when restart NSCservice
it does not start and I am getting error

2009-08-25 14:38:32: error:include\Socket.h:683: bind failed: 10048:
Only one usage of each socket
address (protocol/network address/port) is normally permitted.
2009-08-25 14:38:32: error:include\Socket.h:714: Socket did not start
properly, we will now do nothing...

my question is possible to change NSClient port in NSC.ini in some
other value different that 12489 or 5666 and avoid
above error.
I think it is easier for me to change port than to change port on
firewall for which I am not responsible.

Thank you in advance for sharing your experiences

I can confirm this behavior, at least under 2.x. I haven't had a major
outage under 3.x yet to see if it still happens. My previous
speculation on the issue is at the link below. I don't have enough
knowledge of the code to be certain that's what's really happening
though. Since then, I've come to suspect that it might actually be the
logic to determine who gets notified rather than the actual
notification itself.

http://www.mail-archive.com/nagios-users@lists.sourceforge.net/msg10803.html

 How does everyone handle this issue?

I tried backgrounding the notification script but that didn't help. We
recognize that in the event of a major outage, we don't want to
receive those notifications anyway so we disable notifications program-
wide until the outage is over. Not a fix, per-se, but a workable
process for us. It just doesn't happen often enough to really
troubleshoot or spend a lot of time on.

Hello Ryan,

I do not know what is organization of your network, but maybe you
could take a look into service/host dependency.
It depends on your network organization, but I think it could help

http://nagios.sourceforge.net/docs/2_0/dependencies.html

its purpose is to suppress notifications in case main host is down,
in such case you get only notification about that problem.

As I beleive that you have some gateway/router and in case it has some
problems you are getting many notifications, and I think it
is rara that many hosts have some local problem at same time

Hope this helps

Nice regards,

Arlen

[Nagios-users] ndo nagios failover

2009-08-25 Thread shadih rahman
All,
I have two machines which are responsible for nagios monitoring. One is
master and one is fail over. I am also keeping historical data in
NdoUtils. I am using mysql for Ndoutils and they have master-master
replication. So in master I have active check and active notification
enabled. In fail over just the nagios process is running but there is no
active check and active notification. Both have identical configurations.

My question is Host A (master) is running NdoUtils and Host B (failover) is
also running NdoUtils. Although I have master-master replication, but is
there any possibility of proper copying of data from master to failover
database? Please advise on this. Thanks

Report from 8/1/2009 to 8/25/2009

Host 1

CPU Usage   Min. Max. Avg.

Memory Usage  Min. Max. Avg.

Disk Usage   Min. Max. Avg.

Host 2

CPU Usage   Min. Max. Avg.

Memory Usage  Min. Max. Avg.

Preferably with graphs backing the above numbers. I already have those
checks configured.

I used pnp4nagios to gather the data and drraw - the version at
http://github.com/perldork/drraw-pnp/tree/master - to do the
reporting.

In drraw you can amalgamate multiple .rrds in one graph and specify
whether you want to display the min/average/max/last values, and
choose whatever date range you want.

Cheers,

[Nagios-users] Configuring OCP Daemon

2009-08-25 Thread Yungwei Chen
Hi,
I'm interested in using OCP Daemon to improve performance of
sending check results from one nagios process to another.
My question is : which file shoud I store the following
settings? Thanks.

# OCP daemon required configuration.
# Files to which Nagios will write data. In this setup
# they will be named pipes.
host_perfdata_file=/var/nagios/host-perfdata.fifo
service_perfdata_file=/var/nagios/service-perfdata.fifo

# This is exactly what will be sent to send_NSCA. Do not change it.
host_perfdata_file_template=$HOSTNAME$\t$HOSTSTATEID$\t$HOSTOUTPUT$|$HOSTPERFDATA$
service_perfdata_file_template=$HOSTNAME$\t$SERVICEDESC$\t$SERVICESTATEID$\t$SERVICEOUTPUT$|$SERVICEPERFDATA$

# If using Nagios 2, use the 'w' mode
host_perfdata_file_mode=p
service_perfdata_file_mode=p

# We don't want to process any command, so set this to 0
host_perfdata_file_processing_interval=0
service_perfdata_file_processing_interval=0

[Nagios-users] any solution which will allow me to forward Nagios alerts to Netcool?

2009-08-25 Thread Scott Xiao

 Hi friends
Is there any solution which will allow me to forward
Nagios alerts to Netcool? I read looperng but not many details on how to
forward the alert to netcool, any advice (url /docs)?
Thanks
Scott

Does Netcool have a trap receiver? If so, you can forward alerts with
SNMP. We forward Nagios notifications to Spectrum by sending them as
traps using the NAGIOS-NOTIFY-MIB service and host events .. works
quite well.

Thanks!
I believe netcool has receiver. If not, I will inform netcool engineer
to configure one. So how to configure nagios to to send alert using
NAGIOS-NOTIFY-MIB service and host events ? Could you please provide
some more info/doc/url I can refer to ?
Thanks !
Best regards
Scott
