[Nagios-users] oncall display

2009-08-06 Thread Dale J. Chatham
Is there a utility out there that will read the timeperiods and display
oncall rotations?

Or, is there a who is on call today utility?

Thanks,

Re: [Nagios-users] Hostgtroup question

2009-07-15 Thread Dale J. Chatham
Apologies. 3.something...

I can include hostgroups in another hostgroup, I just cannot disinclude
them with a !, or so it would seem.

As a future feature request, I have two suggestions.

First, is the disinclusion of hostgroups from another hostgroup. This
is already done in service definitions, so the code already must exist.

The other is the ability to have empty hostgroups without complaint,
perhaps without warning. It allows for planning ahead and completion of
concepts.

Thanks,

  Dale

somewhat obvious extension to hostgroup definitions.

It's not possible now -- members of hostgroups need to be hosts, and
 can't be other hostgroups.

 According to
 http://nagios.sourceforge.net/docs/3_0/objectdefinitions.html#hostgroup, you
can have sub hostgroups. So in theory he should be able to specify a
hostgroup that contains every host, subtracting another group.

Well, I just learned something. That definitely isn't doable in Nagios
2.x (you didn't mention which version you were using, so I was going
based on what was in front of me at the time).

2009-07-15 Thread Dale J. Chatham
bingo! That seems to be the way it works. I would have hoped that
anything that could have hostgtroup_members would act the same way and
use the same code. Perhaps an oversight easily handled?

I *CAN* use a template and include it in service/serviceescalation
definitions that does essentially the same thing, but I'd rather not
have a superfluous link to a definition that really shouldn't be needed.

Thanks for verifying. It seems both a logical and an easy thing to do,
given it is done in service and serviceescalation definitions.

Is this a sufficient place to bring this to light?

Diving into the code, this appears to be handled around line 9154
(both above and below) of xodtemplate.c. I don't see any tests for
regexp_matches so I'm about 80% confident this just doesn't work for
hostgroup_members. My code reading-fu may be weak though. I am
assuming that the OP did have regexp matching enabled when testing.

Tested this to verify it, and you and Dale are correct, the parser
does not understand '!' as a subtractive prefix for a group name in
the hostgroup_members attribute of a hostgroup definition.

Try this: mkdir /var/spool/nagios chown nagios:nagios
/var/spool/nagios It looks like the directory does not exist and
since the init script runs nagios as user nagios, it can't create

I've seen some discussion about this, but never a fix.

Any ideas?

Re: [Nagios-users] Return code of 141

2008-11-04 Thread Dale J. Chatham

A command which is being run is returning a code of 141. Without
knowing what command is running, it is impossible to know what that
means, beyond what I've stated.

It is as though you ran the command from a command line, then typed
echo $? and it printed 141.

A Nagios command is supposed to return 0, 1 or 2 for OK, Warning,
Critical. This one returned a 141.

Not sure if it helps or not, but you could assign aliases in mail which
are the same as the hostname.

Then, in command configuration: /bin/mail $HOSTNAME$ -s Subject

In this scenario, why does contact1 get service notifications for
 host2 and host3?

Sorry if I’m making this explanation more complicated than necessary.

 Hi --

I apologize in advance as this question is difficult to type
without running around in circles but here goes:

We’re having trouble configuring Nagios service notifications to
go to specific contacts for specific hosts.

For instance, we have contact1 who is a member of contactgroup1.
We have host1 who also has a contact group of contactgroup1. That
 association is working.

However, we have service1 which runs on host1, host2, and host3,
and has contact groups contactgroup1 and contactgroup2. Whenever
host2, which is not associated with contact1 has a notification
for this service, contact1 is receiving the notification.

How do we limit notifications for service1 to only go to contact1
if the host having trouble is host1?

 Thanks in advance,

 Dustin

See my prior, in the service-notify-by-email (or whatever) use /bin/mail
$HOSTNAME$ ...

Or, write a script to send the mail and send the HOSTNAME macro to it
and make it smart enough to know who to notify.

Phillips, Dustin B wrote:
Right. I understand that would fix our problem.

So you're saying we'll need to create services that have the same check
command but unique hosts and contactgroups? We have 40 services and 8
contact groups. Each contact group is only responsible for a portion of the
hosts. Surely there is a better way to achieve this in lieu of creating 320
 services.

 Thanks,

 Dustin

 Mhhh .. cuz service1 is assigned to contactgroup1 and contact1 is a

 Don't assign service1 on host2 3 if you don't want contact1 to get notified.

It's what happens when you write a filter to change case because someone

Re: [Nagios-users] Nagios Config Script

2008-03-13 Thread Dale J. Chatham
I've written lots of scripts to autocreate .cfg files.

My advice is to have one file per configuratin item, file name =
configuration item name (less the .cfg).

Separate directories for each config type.

Please share your thoughts on automated *.cfg file creation.

Re: [Nagios-users] Nagios memory percentages

2008-03-11 Thread Dale J. Chatham

Looc at the /proc/meminfo file and the vmstat command.

Divide memory parameter (free, used, whatever) by total memory,
multiply by 100 and you have percent.

  Hi Everyone

   Maybe someone can
assist me, but this may be a more linux
specific question than Nagios even though related to Nagios.

   I need to monitor the
memory usage in percentage on Nagios
and would like to rather write my own scripts for this.

   I know there are snmp
versions of this to do the job for
me, however I do not want to complicate the systems with too many
clients
running on them.

  Currently we are using
the normal nrpe to connect to the
systems and run scripts remotely, however we do not have one to monitor
the
memory.

   On the web
there are a lot of references to the
snmp commands but as all the systems are production and we might be
having a
couple of upgrades soon, I would like to rather keep it simple and only
run one
client on it for all Nagios connections.

   My question
is this I can use the command
free to get the amount of memory , used, free etc

   How can I
write this into a script to display as
percentages is there another command I can use or maybe an option that
I
do not know about?

[Nagios-users] Service checks scheduled far in future

2008-02-17 Thread Dale J. Chatham
Service checks scheduled

I stopped nagios
I deleted /var/log/nagios/*
I started nagios

output from date command:
Sun Feb 17 09:46:30 CST 2008

 From nagios service detail page:
Service check scheduled for Mon Feb 18 07:00:00 CST 2008

If I force the check, it will run OK, but the next check will happen far
into the future.

This one is weird.

Help me obi-won kenobi, you're my only hope.

  Dale

Re: [Nagios-users] Service checks scheduled far in future

2008-02-17 Thread Dale J. Chatham

The output of the command is below.

I included the objects.cache file. As I understand it, this is created
at run time from what nagios reads from the config files and saves.
Therefore, if I left something out, it should be more obvious here.

If you need the actual files, I can tar and zip 'em, though. I make
heavy use of config_dir and have one file per configuration item.
