Re: [Nagios-users] Undeliverable Mail

2011-03-02 Thread Dei Bertine
Dear all -

I run Nagios Core 3.2.3 and running postfix as mt mta agent in Ubuntu 10.4.
I have setup nagios alerts to send to me and to send to our ticketing system
which is tic...@csaa.com.

My ticketing system has a auto responder which responds to end users so with
that basically whenever Nagios sends alerts to tic...@csaa.com it auto responds
to nagios - unfortunately it fails:

Your message could not be delivered to one or more recipients. It's attached
below.
For further assistance, please send mail to postmaster.
If you do so, please include this problem report. You can delete your own text
from the attached returned message.
The mail system
nag...@monitor22.csaa.local: Host or domain name not found. Name service
error
for name=monitor22.csaa.local type=A: Host not found

My question is, how can I make Nagios/Postfix receive emails within?
Pls kindly advise mates.
Cheers,

check_dns uses /usr/bin/nslookup to do the actual dns lookup. nslookup
failed and didn't return an address or the format of it's output
changed and wasn't recognized.

If this is ongoing, try running check_dns from the command line,
adding a -v (verbose) flag to see what command is being sent to
nslookup and what the nslookup output is. It'll probably provide a
clue to the real problem.

I changed it to this:

check_command  check_smtp!/check_smtp -p 25 -w 5 -c 8 -t 100

Am I missing something?

 What is your service configuration? If you're checking SMTP remotely, there
is no need for NRPE here. I would guess your service configuration is not
passing the correct variables.

Re: [Nagios-users] check_smtp issue

2009-07-01 Thread Dei Bertine
I got it! :-)

I got confused with the check_nrpe plugin.

So what I did was enabled nrpe on the host side, then configured my services in
nagios to check_nrpe!check_smtp

Now Nagios is happy.
SMTP OK - 0.004 sec. response time

Thanks guys.

Mainly want to monitor the performance of the wireless connections and if
possible send alerts if the network is slow.
Any advise would be appreciated.

You're not running it with the exact same parameters from

[Nagios-users] check_dhcp issue

2009-06-25 Thread Dei Bertine
Hi all,

I need to monitor our dhcp server and came to see the check_dhcp plugin.

However I'm getting this error when initiating the command:

nag...@tool:~/libexec$ ./check_dhcp -s serveip1
Error: Could not bind socket to interface eth0. Check your privileges...

But when I am on root, I get this:
r...@tool:/usr/local/nagios/libexec# ./check_dhcp -s serveip1
OK: Received 1 DHCPOFFER(s), max lease time = 86400 sec

ls -als on check_dhcp:
76 -rwxr-xr-x 1 nagios nagios 72834 2009-04-27 13:06 check_dhcp

Do I need to do something like set permissions on serveip1 server?

Please advise.

Thanks!

I would put service dependencies in a file called something like
'servicedependencies.cfg'.

in nagios.cfg, you need a pointer to this new file, for example:

cfg_file=/usr/local/nagios/etc/objects/servicedependencies.cfg

The nagios.cfg file should only contain the main configuration file
options which you'll find documented in
http://nagios.sourceforge.net/docs/3_0/configmain.html

But ... I'm not convinced you should need service dependencies for
'ping' from one host to another. Nagios handles this sort of thing
automatically if you configure the host parent relationships. See:

http://nagios.sourceforge.net/docs/3_0/networkreachability.html

Jim

[Nagios-users] Host/Service Script Question

2009-04-28 Thread Dei Bertine
Hi guys,

I was wondering if there's a way to incorporate all hosts into one host name
instead of creating individual defines?
I'm trying to add all of our servers into Nagios but there's huge amount of
them.
Need faster way to add all of them into one script.
Here's what I'm trying to avoid:
define host{
use generic-host
host_namesunbl.001.csaa.net
alias  UNIX-SERVER1
address 172.168.1.35
}
define host{
use generic-host
host_namesunbl.002.csaa.net
alias  UNIX-SERVER2
address 172.168.1.36
}

.and so on to hundreds of define host

Here's what I'm trying to hopefully accomplish if possible:
define host{
useall-host
host_name   allunixhosts
alias  ALL-UNIX
address ALLIP
}

...done all hosts...

And also have them in one all host services.cfg script.
define service{
use all-service
host_name ALLHOSTSERVICE
service_description SSH
check_command   check_ssh
}

define service{
   use all-service
   host_name ALLHOSTSERVICE
   service_description   PING
   check_commandcheck_ping
   }

Please advise.

[Nagios-users] Change default Nagios user and Nagios group

2009-04-24 Thread Dei Bertine
Hi all,
I'm trying to change the default user name nagios and the group nagios to
user admmon and group admmon.
After doing so, restarted apache and nagios - got this error from the admin
page:
Error: Could not read host and service status information!
The most common cause of this error message (especially for new users),
is the fact that Nagios is not actually running. If Nagios is indeed
not running, this is a normal error message. It simply indicates that
the CGIs could not obtain the current status of hosts and services that
are being monitored. If you've just installed things, make sure you
read the documentation on starting Nagios.
Some other things you should check in order to resolve this error include:
Check the Nagios log file for messages relating to startup or status data
errors.

Always verify configuration options using the -v command-line option before
starting or restarting Nagios!

Make sure you've compiled the main program and the CGIs to use
the same status data storage options (i.e. text file or database). If
the main program is storing status data in a text file and the CGIs are
trying to read status data from a database, you'll have problems.Make sure you
read the documentation on installing, configuring and
running Nagios thoroughly before continuing. If all else fails, try
sending a message to one of the mailing lists. More information can be
found at http://www.nagios.org.
I made sure I changed all cfg's that read nagios as user and nagios as
group to the new one admmon in all hosts and the nagios cfgs itself.

Need expert advise please, I appreciate it!

Thanks.

Nagios has found an object which refers to a host called win4503, but
can't find a host definition for it anywhere in your configuration
files.

 Error: Could not expand hostgroups and/or hosts specified in service (config
 file '/usr/local/nagios/etc/windows.cfg', starting on line 36)

This tells you where Nagios found this problem.

It looks like you have defined a service in your windows.cfg file, but
have not created a host definition for host win4503'. Have a look
through the sample configuration files to see what a host definition
should look like, or see

[Nagios-users] Monitor Windows Server using Nagios

2009-04-06 Thread Dei Bertine
Hi List:
I'm setting up Nagios to monitor my Windows server, NSClient installed on the
windows server.
I followed the directions in the link below:
http://nagios.sourceforge.net/docs/3_0/monitoring-windows.html
I have created most of the config files within Nagios however when I verify the
result, it's coming up with this error:
Nagios 2.10

Last Modified: 10-21-2007
License: GPL
Reading configuration data...

notification_interval value for service 'C:\ Drive Space' on host
'winsrv.domain.com'
Error: Could not register service (config file
'/usr/local/nagios/etc/windows.cfg', starting on line 33)
*** One or more problems was encountered while processing the config files...
 Check your configuration file(s) to ensure that they contain valid
 directives and data defintions. If you are upgrading from a previous
 version of Nagios, you should be aware that some variables/definitions
 may have been removed or modified in this version. Make sure to read
 the HTML documentation regarding the config files, as well as the
 'Whats New' section to find out what has changed.

Here's my windows.cfg file:

# Define a host for the Windows machine we'll be monitoring
# Change the host_name, alias, and address to fit your situation

define service{
use generic-service
host_name   winsrv.domain.com
service_description NSClient++ Version
check_command   check_nt!CLIENTVERSION
}

define service{
use generic-service
host_name   winsrv.domain.com

}

define service{
use generic-service
host_name   winsrv.domain.com
service_description W3SVC
check_command   check_nt!SERVICESTATE!-d SHOWALL -l W3SVC
}

Here's my winserver.cfg file:
define host{
use always
host_name   winsrv.domain.com
alias   Winsrv
address 172.168.2.234
}

Here's my windows-server file in hostgroups:
define host{
namewindows-server ; The name of this host
template
use generic-host; Inherit default
values from the generic-host template
check_period24x7; By default, Windows
servers are monitored round the clock
check_interval  5   ; Actively check the
server every 5 minutes
max_check_attempts  10  ; Check each server 10
times (max)
check_command   check-host-alive; Default
command to check if servers are alive
notification_period 24x7; Send notification out
at any time - day or night
notification_interval   30  ; Resend notifications
every 30 minutes
notification_optionsd,r ; Only send
notifications for specific host states
contact_groups  admininstrators  ;
Notifications get sent to the admins by default
hostgroups windows-servers ; Host groups that
Windows servers should be a member of
register1   ; REGISTER THIS -
}

I need help, please let me know what I need to do.

Thanks in advance.

[Nagios-users] Nagios Error: Could not find any host matching/Could not expand hostgroups and/or hosts

2009-04-03 Thread Dei Bertine
Hi there - I am getting this error when trying to verify my Nagios configs and
was wondering what it means?
I newly setup Nagios to monitor some of our Linux boxes and Windows server.
Linux is sending alerts and monitoring fine but the Windows I have not gotten
any alerts.
Below is the error I am getting when trying to verify my configuration file.
servelord:/var/log# /usr/local/nagios/bin/nagios -v
/usr/local/nagios/etc/nagios.cfg
Nagios 2.10

Error: Could not expand hostgroups and/or hosts specified in service (config
file '/usr/local/nagios/etc/windows.cfg', starting on line 36)
*** One or more problems was encountered while processing the config files...

 version of Nagios, you should be aware that some variables/definitions
 may have been removed or modified in this version. Make sure to read
 the HTML documentation regarding the config files, as well as the

I'd appreciate any assistance with this.

Thank you,
Dei
