Not really. First of all because the op5-reports-module functionality
has been superseded by Merlin, and secondly because it by its very
nature already gets tightly coupled with Nagios as soon as it's
 loaded into the Nagios core.

What we could do is to add a relatively simple module download, build
and install tool that takes care of installing modules such as merlin,
livestatus, DNX, NDOUtils and whatnot. I could add a fairly simple
framework for it and then random module authors could take care of
adding support for their own modules or addons.

That's probably the closest we're going to get to shipping addons and
modules along with Nagios core, and it's really the only sensible
 thing to do.

Going back to the original question of the thread, if you want to enable

Hello Jon:

Thank you for the information, I guess the snmp option is the quick and

Is it possible to access the MSCluster namespace using NSClient++?

We use NSClient++ for accessing performance counters at the moment but we

Re: [Nagios-users] Event Handlers, start a java program, nohup issues.

2009-07-03 Thread Marco Tirado
Hello users:

Thank you for all the answers. I have made some changes to my command: I
added a space before the character and I explicitly piped the stdout
and stderr to my log file to avoid missunderstandings. The command looks
like this now:

nohup $JAVA_CMD -cp $CLASSPATH $JVM_OPTIONS JMXServer.JMXServerDispatcher
$PORT /dev/null $LOG_FILE 2$LOG_FILE

The result however is much worst in this case, instead of seeing a timeout
in the logs, the whole nagios process hangs (that is the logs freeze and no
new tests are performed). I believe these issues have to do with how nagios
handles the character or processes in the background in general.

Any thoughts? other suggestions?

//Marco

By the way David:

We have used the check_jmx plugin in the past with out own modifications,
however we have a very large system with around 1000 JMX queries running
each 5 minutes and the check_jmx solution is not very scalable. If we use
check_jmx that means starting 1000 JVM (and all the resources that come with
it) every five minutes, that consumes a lot of resources and generates a lot
of load on the monitoring server. Our system is continuously growing and new
JMX queries are added quite frequently.

To solve that issue we have developed a JMX server that takes care of all
the JMX queries and a light weight client that is run by nagios. This is a
much more scalable solution that decouples the whole JMX processing from
nagios (the JMX server can be running in any machine not only the nagios
server).

Cheers

[Nagios-users] Event Handlers, start a java program, nohup issues.

2009-07-02 Thread Marco Tirado
Hello Users:

I have a problem with an event handler of mine. The handler starts a java
daemon-like program which loops forever waiting for connections and performs
JMX queries against our java applications.

The problem is that the handler times out when it is run by nagios. This is
what I see in the logs:

The event handler should start my JMXServer both in hard and soft states. I
have run the command from the console as the nagios user and it works, so
the problem has nothing to do with user rights for nagios.

The problem is that the handler hangs when I run nohup followed by my
command for starting the server (see the red text below).

You need to make the java daemon run in the background. That will make
Nagios ignore it after it has moved from the foreground.

[Nagios-users] nagios-nagvis animated icon sets

2009-04-29 Thread Marco Tirado
Hello users:

We currently use nagios and nagvis for the visualization of the state of our
monitoring system. Nagvis is an excellent tool and allows us to have many
different customized views.

However the default iconsets in nagvis for showing host/service status in
nagvis are difficult to spot in large installations. It would be great if we
could use animated .gif, in other words, an icon that blinks or moves
whenever a server has a problem instead of a static icon.

Has anybody done this ??

Any hints ??

Re: [Nagios-users] Integrating host notes into Nagios html...

2009-04-13 Thread Marco Tirado
Actually it is the notes_url you are interested in, this is a variable you
can set in the host definition.

The action url is normally used to display extra actions for a host, this is
normally a pnp graph with the host performance data from pnp4nagios,
nagiosgraph or some other graphing plugin.

From the nagios documentation:

*notes_url: This variable is used to define an optional URL that can be used
to provide more information about the host. If you specify an URL, you will
see a red folder icon in the CGIs (when you are viewing host information)
that links to the URL you specify here. Any valid URL can be used. If you
plan on using relative paths, the base path will the the same as what is
used to access the CGIs (i.e. **/cgi-bin/nagios/). This can be very useful
if you want to make detailed information on the host, emergency contact
methods, etc. available to other support staff.
*
//Marco

I think that action_url can do that.
 Such as:
  action_url /some_dir/some_pages?host=$HOSTNAME$some_key=some_value

I'm thinking about using something like sysreport to generate info about

 To
me that makes it somewhat logical to add a per-host html link into Nagios
(clicking the host name would take you to a page that shows the detailed
info). Have any of you tried this or something similar? Care to share
 your
experience or what you edited, etc?

Re: [Nagios-users] configuring plugins to return graphable data

2009-03-19 Thread Marco Tirado
Hello:

The best tool is pnp4nagios. It takes the performance data, stores it in an
rrdtool database and generates pnp graphs.

Re: [Nagios-users] snmptt and nagios, access to nagios.cmd file

2009-03-12 Thread Marco Tirado
They look like this:

For nagios.cmd

prw-rw 1 nagios nagcmd0 2009-03-11 18:53 nagios.cmd

for the rw catalog:

drwxrwsr-x 2 nagios nagcmd 4096 2009-03-11 18:14 rw

Please let me know if something looks obviously wrong.

Re: [Nagios-users] snmptt and nagios, access to nagios.cmd file

2009-03-12 Thread Marco Tirado
Hello Jim:

Thank you very much for the help, after changing the last line in the
submit_check_result script from the default of:

`$echocmd $cmdline $CommandFile`

to:

sg nagiocmd -c echo '$cmdline' $CommandFile

everything works fine.

As for my setup, I run nagios 3 and Nagtrap. However I send the
notifications as passive checks directly from snmptt's EXEC statement. I
some special logic in my script to select the right alarm level and then
send it to nagios with submit_check_result. I link to nagtrap using the
action_url in all my snmptrap services.

I catch all the traps in Nagtrap, however only some of them generate alarms.
Whenever an alarm is generated by the selected traps, you can always check
the rest of received traps in nagtrap.

Regards

Marco

p.s. I'd be interested to know what instructions you followed to get

maintaining the submit_check_result script was rather time-consuming,
but if things have moved on a bit since I last set mine up I'd be
interested to see if it's any easier to maintain now.

I quite like NagTrap, but if you follow the standard install for it,
there's a lot of polling the database which is very cpu intensive
compared with writing direct to the command file as you do. Also, the
alerts aren't so meaningful with NagTrap as they are in your setup.

 Cheers,

 Jim

[Nagios-users] snmptt and nagios, access to nagios.cmd file

2009-03-11 Thread Marco Tirado
Hello Users:

I am having touble integrating nagios with snmptt, it seems that the snmptt
daemon can not write passive check results to the
/usr/local/nagios/var/rw/nagios.cmd file. I get the following error:

cannot create /usr/local/nagios/var/rw/nagios.cmd: Permission denied

The wierd thing is that I have added the snmptt user to the nagcmd
group. I can actually run the EXEC command from the console and manually
send the check results by running:

/usr/local/nagios/libexec/eventhandlers/submit_check_result myhost
snmp_traps 1 My text message

as the snmptt user. But when the snmptt tries to run it when a trap is
received I get the above error.

Any suggestions or recommendations are deeply appreciated

Re: [Nagios-users] graphing trends across hosts or services instead of a timeseries

Hello:

PNP4Nagios has a feature called pages that allows you to show multiple
services for the same host or multiple hosts for the same service. It should
be easy to use since it supports regular expressions. Check the following
link

[Nagios-users] Automatic Configuration Update

2009-03-04 Thread Marco Tirado
Hello users:

I am trying to do the following:

   - From a script, automatically generate Nagios configuration files for
   host addition.
   - From the same script export individual files to a web based Nagios
configuration tool (NagiosQL or Lilac for example).
   - Finally reload both Nagios and the Web Configuration tool, also from
   the script.

I have looked at both NagiosQL and Lilac since both have nice
configuration tools and import options. However none of them provide a text
console interface for importing config files from a script nor periodical
scheduling of file imports.

Has anybody implemented this? Is there a better tool for this besides
NagiosQL or Lilac?

Any pointers are appreciated

[Nagios-users] RRDtool Aberrant behavior detection

2009-01-31 Thread Marco Tirado
Hello Nagios Users:

I am very interested in integrating RRDtool's features for aberrant behavior
detection with my nagios implementation. I still have not found a plugin for
this and I would like to know if anybody has already implemented this.

I guess an option would be to adapt plugins pnp4nagios or nagiosgraph to
get it to work. Any pointers or comments are deeply appreciated.
