Re: [Nagios-users] Remote event handlers using NRPE
I dont have an answer about your NRPE question, but if i had to guess i would say its not possible with out support compiled in. I did recently find this however: http://www.edcint.co.nz/checkwmiplus/ I have it running all kinds of checks via WMI on my domain and it has the ability to restart a hung or dead process, i would recommend you check it out, i like it alot better than NRPE and there is no client to install. [Nagios-users] Multiple interfaces on on host (single representation)
Hi Everyone, I'm setting up Nagios on a new server group, these servers all have 1 public IP and one private (internal network) IP. For the basic up/down checks I'd like to ping the public IP, check for the services which is provides, etc. all on the public IP. However for any NRPE stuff, I'd like to bind it to the internal IP address and run all the checks on the local network. The problem is I don't know how to keep from specifying 2 host definitions for each server (ie. an external definition and internal definition). I don't know if it can be done, but I'd like to have one record per server, just for clarity and to avoid confusion. Does this make sense? Can it be done in a reasonable way? Or should I just bite the bullet and make two host definitions per server? There are much more complex time definitions you could create that could deal with DST if you wanted. Also is there a maximum to how many hosts and / or services that can be monitored by nagios Depends a lot on hardware you're running it on and the types of checks you are using. You'll hit some points where you'll probably need to change your way of doing things (i.e. at ~10,000 active checks you might need to start looking at moving those to passive checks), etc. There are others on the list running instances with many 10's of thousands of checks that might be able to offer insight into those kinds of things. Queue the events that were unsendable and send them when it becomes possible. Merlin is designed to handle frequently failing links with sometimes extremely long downtimes (it already does this), but it's not really production level stable yet, so I wouldn't recommend using it for this (unless you're interested in completing it yourself or sponsoring me or op5 to do it for you, ofcourse). More about merlin at http://git.op5.org/git/nagios/merlin.git pnsca, another module available there, can probably be trivially rewritten to stash alerts and whatnot with very good performance. I am thinking of getting the remote nagios servers to send email alerts to an account on the central nagios server then trying to get an alert generated based on the contents of the email, has anyone tried this before ? Or does anyone have any better ideas for solving this problem ? That depends on what your end-goal is, really. Do you want only one server to send notifications, or do you want your central server to be able to generate reports from the data sent in from the slave systems? If only one server should send notifications, I'd recommend using a solution with lower latency that gathering everything and shipping it as an email. One-way UDP communication would be one solution here, I guess, but it does require the network to be physically present at all times (and there's no failure detection what so ever, as UDP is a fire-and-forget protocol). Merlin would help in this case (although it can't send over UDP yet). If it's for reporting reasons, you'd be better off sending the logfiles as emails when they're being rotated and then merging them together on the master server. That means you can't get *accurate* reports more often than the logs are rotated, but since you'll need to sort-merge them anyways, that's still going to be a problem. Neither merlin nor NSCA can help here, I'm afraid, as entries in the logs would get completely jumbled unless you sort-merge them before taking generating reports from them. Thanks for the detailed info Andreas. I still think the nagios event - email - nagios server is the only realistic solution. It's not perfect as mail servers can fail and mail can get delayed but it's the best we can do at the moment. Re: [Nagios-users] Distributed monitoring without direct networkconnection
Hi Ton thanks for the info. It's not that the connections will be up/down it's more that they simply won't be there. Most of our clients are NHS (hospitals) and we have to have a secure vpn connection that we dial into on an as needed basis. We currently just send alerts as emails to our support account, but the company is getting bigger and bigger so monitoring the support inbox is becoming a massive chore. We really want a central nagios server with the web frontend on a big flat screen on the wall :) Im setting up a filter in postfix on the central nagios server so that all emails coming in will go thru the filter, the filter will run a script to call send_nsca. So I'll have nagios clients - nagios - send_email - primary nagios server - postfix - mail filter - send_nsca - nagios If I get this working I'll treat myself to curry :) From: Ton Voon [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 28 November 2008 15:35 To: nagios-users@lists.sourceforge.net Subject: Re: [Nagios-users] Distributed monitoring without direct networkconnection Thanks for the plug, but Opsview is not really suitable for this. We have distributed monitoring out-of-the-box, but it requires the permanent connection between slaves and the master which Nick says he hasn't got. If you will have temporary connections (that go up and down), we have been thinking whether we can do batched results from slaves, though this is quite a big job as it requires changes to a lot of components (Nagios, NSCA, NDOutils, and our datawarehouse). Let us know if you fancy sponsoring this work. Otherwise, why can't you just have notifications from the other servers? Do you need to correlate with your central server? Re: [Nagios-users] SMS notification commands
Thanks for the reply Peter, however that isn't what the problem is in my case. The /var/spool/sms/outgoing directory on that server is in fact world-writable. And as I said I can run it from the command line successfully while logged in as the nagios user, which I wouldn't be able to do if the permissions were not right. Keep in mind that SMS Tools is running on a different server, and I'm using SCP to copy the file to that server. Any other ideas? [Nagios-users] SMS notification commands
Hi, I need to be able to send notifications via SMS in the event that the email servers are unavailable, or the internet connection is down. There is a server on the same network as the Nagios host that has a modem installed and uses SMS Tools 3 to send messages. To send a message all I need to do is place a file in a certain directory on that server, in a simple format, and it does the rest. So, I created a script called 'notify-by-sms' in /usr/local/nagios/libexec which is as follows: TMPFILE=`/bin/mktemp notify.XX` /bin/echo -e $1 $TMPFILE /usr/bin/scp $TMPFILE sms-server:/var/spool/sms/outgoing/ rm $TMPFILE The script is owned by the user nagios and is executable. To run it I just need to pass it a string like To: phonenumber\n\nmessagebody as the only parameter. If I run it from the command line while logged in as nagios it works fine. I have the following in commands.cfg which I adapted from notify-service-by-email and notify-host-by-email: # 'notify-host-by-sms' command definition define command{ command_name notify-host-by-sms command_line /usr/local/nagios/libexec/notify-by-sms To: $CONTACTPAGER$\n\n* Nagios *\n\nNotification Type: $NOTIFICATIONTYPE$\nHost: $HOSTNAME$\nState: HOSTSTATE$\nAddress: $HOSTADDRESS$\nInfo: $HOSTOUTPUT$\n\nDate/Time: $LONGDATETIME$\n } # 'notify-service-by-sms' command definition define command{ command_name notify-service-by-sms command_line /usr/local/nagios/libexec/notify-by-sms To: $CONTACTPAGER$\n\n* Nagios *\n\nNotification Type: $NOTIFICATIONTYPE$\n\nService: $SERVICEDESC$\nHost: HOSTALIAS$\nAddress: $HOSTADDRESS$\nState: $SERVICESTATE$\n\nDate/Time: $LONGDATETIME$\n\nAdditional Info:\n\n$SERVICEOUTPUT$ } I see the following in /usr/local/nagios/var/nagios.log, as an example (I have replaced some things with ...): [1196327641] SERVICE NOTIFICATION: contactname;servername;SyncServer;CRITICAL;notify-service-by-sms;CRITICA L - Error Fetching http://ipaddress/sync/ds [503] Service Temporarily Unavailable however the sms is not received. It does not even appear in the log on the SMS server which indicates the script isn't running or isn't able to scp the file to that server. I am using public key authentication to negate the need for a SSH password to be entered. Any ideas what the problem could be, when it runs manually from the command line but not through the nagios daemon? Ben Actually I'd lean more towards it being a case of old and busted. When I hit this problem it wasn't a matter of the status.dat location (since -F /path/to/status.file is one of the _required_ CLI args). Upgrade to Plugins 1.4.3 and you'll be ok. If you don't want to upgrade all your plugins at once just compile the package and copy the check_nagios binary out instead of running make install. Yes, its a required arg but im sure the format of status.dat has changed, it used to be status.log and im fairly sure it changed format along with its name. Ben -f I'm sorry, I misread part of your post. To me, recompile the plugins meant re-run make and make install, not install the new version. We were both saying the same thing. [Nagios-users] Referencing hostgroups in hostgroup definitions
Hi folks, I have devices on my network that are dumb (unmanaged switches, DSL/cable modems, etc.) that I have host definitions for but set to never notify. These devices are simply entered to get displayed in the Status map diagram to show parent device relationships. I have a hostgroup defined that explicitly lists the dumb hosts in the members directive named DUMBHOSTS. I want a hostgroup that includes everything except the dumb hosts so I can have just the responsive hosts listed in the Service Status Details For All Hosts page. I tried !DUMBHOSTS in the members directive, but Nagios complains about Error: Could not find any host matching 'DUMBHOSTS' Error: Could not expand member hosts specified in hostgroup (config file ...) Any ideas on how to do this? Thanks in advance, -- n - Using Tomcat but need to do more? Need to support web services, security? [Nagios-users] Trouble creating dependencies
Hi, I'm having trouble creating dependencies on my fairly small scale nagios installation I am monitoring our remote office, which has a DSL link and VPN between here and there. As its DSL and on occasion goes down I'm trying to get nagios to stop monitoring the fileservers over there too. I have created my dependencies.cfg file in etc/ edited nagios.cfg so the dependencies file is being looked at. As a start I'm just trying to get nagios to not look at the 'Check host down' service on one of the fileservers over there, so here is my initial dependency within dependencies.cfg define servicedependency { dependent_host_name fileserver dependent_service_description Check Host Alive host_name curtainroadgateway service_description Check Host Alive execution_failure_criteria c notification_failure_criteria c } Everything is critical at the moment because the office is empty and the fileservers are off, also the dsl is disconnected, yet nagios continues to show critical for the fileserver. When starting up nagios there are no errors. Any ideas what the problem is? Thanks Nick - Using Tomcat but need to do more? Need to support web services, security? [Nagios-users] Turning off windows hosts at temp limit
I've got problems with our air conditioning cutting out when the external temperature reaches 30 degrees C, the main source of heat in our server room is the render farm which isn't as necessarily as the file servers, so I'd like to be able to automatically turn them off. They are all windows 2000 hosts, and not being all that well versed with scripting on windows I'm not sure how this would work. So any ideas on how to get this working? [Nagios-users] Making alarms less sensitive
Is there any way of making nagios a bit less sensitive to outages? I have it setup monitoring a webserver that will often go away for a few seconds and come back which nagios will quite rightly report on. I just wondered how i'd go about extending the down time before notify to say 10 mins? --- This SF.Net email is sponsored by xPML, a groundbreaking scripting language that extends applications into web and mobile media. Re: [Nagios-users] UK SMS alerts
Thanks for the advice, I'm going to try the sms2email initially as I have only a few days until I'm out of the office for a week, then when I'm back from holiday see if I can't get sms_client to work. Fingers crossed the office doesn't melt down in the meantime. Nick Ben O'Hara wrote: Which doesnt work when you loose internet connectivity!
