Re: [Nagios-users] check_nt fails after recent windows 2008 r2 updates

2013-07-02 Thread Nick Price
Hi

I had the same

I changed to the latest version of nsclient++ on the windows PC's and use
nrpe on my nagios server.

Define command{

Command_name CheckUpTime

Command_line Check_nrpe -H $HOSTNAME$ -p 5666 -c
CheckUpTime - ShowAll=long

}

That solved it and it works fine on all my windows machines now

Hi,

Did you find any workaround about this topic ?

Thanks.

2013/1/13 doug gold...@ix.netcom.com

After just applying some new windows updates, a few of my check_nt
commands are now failing.

# /usr/lib/nagios/plugins/check_nt -H XXX -p 12489 -s password -v
USEDDISKSPACE -l d -w 80 -c 90
Free disk space : Invalid drive

Drive is valid, this is just failing today after windows updates. I
updated my nsclient++ to nscp-0.4.1.73-x64.msi still fails.

# /usr/lib/nagios/plugins/check_nt -H XXX -p 12489 -s password -v UPTIME
System Uptime - 0 day(s) 0 hour(s) 0 minute(s)

This data is invalid, was working fine.

# /usr/lib/nagios/plugins/check_nt -H XXX -p 12489 -s password -v MEMUSE
-w 80 -c 90
Segmentation fault

This was working fine before the update as well.

Some of the other tests are not returning valid data as well.

Any ideas?

Re: [Nagios-users] Remote event handlers using NRPE

2012-08-29 Thread Nick Smith
I dont have an answer about your NRPE question, but if i had to guess
i would say its not possible with out support compiled in.

I did recently find this however:

http://www.edcint.co.nz/checkwmiplus/

I have it running all kinds of checks via WMI on my domain and it has
the ability to restart a hung or dead process, i would recommend you
check it out, i like it alot better than NRPE and there is no client
to install.

Hope that helps.

compiled with support for command arguments. Since everything I read about
NRPE says that allowing command arguments is a very bad idea, I was
wondering if it is even possible to execute remote event handlers without
 having support for it.

I am running Nagios 3.3.1 on a fedora 16 server

The server is up to date with all the latest patches.

I have noticed the web interface doesn't show the good results.

Everything shows OK and no emails go out even when things are not ok.

If I issue from the command line on the server check_nrpe -H myIPaddress
-p 5666 -c CheckDriveSize -a ShowAll=long Drive=CI get a slightly
different result than shown in the web interface.

CheckDriveSize is not the only command that shows different, this was just
an example of 1 command

In the web interface last check show dates in the future.

If I stop the Nagios service then delete the following

Nagios.lock

Nagios.log

Objects.cache

Retention.dat

Status.dat

Then I restart the service, everything comes back as normal.

What is becoming corrupted and how to I stop it. It has happened a few
times now

As a one time ;-), apologetic, and unintentional thread hijacker, I want to
mention that this can happen easily and unintentionally by replying to a
message (for the convenience of getting the email address of the list) and
thinking you can start a new thread simply by completely changing the
subject line. It doesn't work that way. Threads are maintained by the
Message-IDs in the email header, not the subject line contents. So you must
start a new thread by composing a new message using the
nagios-users@lists.sourceforge.net
address in your address book.

That's probably because the webinterface is showing the results from a

 See above.

In the web interface last check show dates in the future.

 This is more worrying though.

Most likely you have multiple Nagios instances running. It's the usual
 culprit behind such random corruption.

Sorry about the lack of info:

In the above case the Nagios command issued was:

./check_nrpe -H server IP -p 5666 -c CheckUpTime -a MinWarn=1d MinCrit=12h

I'm aiming to get to a point where for all Windows machines (Servers and
PCs) I have a default check template of:

NSClient++ version
Uptime
CPU Load
Memory Usage
Disk Usage (all partitions)
Explorer process is running.

In the NSC.ini file, the following have all been uncomment:

FileLogger.dll
CheckSystem.dll
CheckDisk.dll
NSClientListener.dll
NRPEListener.dll
SysTray.dll
CheckEventLog.dll
CheckHelpers.dll
CheckWMI.dll

Does the nsclient.log file contain anything interesting?

There are umpteen ways to configure NSClient++ and run checks against it.
What specific checks are you trying to run and how are you running them?

I doubt that its a bug in Nagios, as Nagios just uses your system's commands
to send notifications.
What is your notification config? can you run the commands the notification
uses as the Nagios user?
Is there some security such as SE Linux running?

You could try adding logging to the Notification command eg add a
/var/tmp/Notification.log

or instead of the Notification command being a direct command, make a script
for it instead.

I can send emails from command line.

I doubt that its a bug in Nagios, as Nagios just uses your system's commands to
send notifications.
What is your notification config? can you run the commands the notification
uses as the Nagios user?
Is there some security such as SE Linux running?

You could try adding logging to the Notification command eg add a
/var/tmp/Notification.log

or instead of the Notification command being a direct command, make a script
for it instead.

Maybe you don't have the binary or you need to rename the command.

By default it uses /usr/bin/printf and /usr/bin/mail if I'm not mistaken.

Did you by accident disable the notifications?

On the Nagios web interface, click on Tactical Overview.
At the end of the page (Monitoring Features) check that Notifications are
green/enabled.

It would make sense as you don't have SELinux and all commands seem to work
from command-line (you also checked them with your Nagios user, not root,
right?).

[Nagios-users] Multiple interfaces on on host (single representation)

2009-10-02 Thread Nick Jennings
Hi Everyone,

I'm setting up Nagios on a new server group, these servers all have 1
public IP and one private (internal network) IP. For the basic up/down
checks I'd like to ping the public IP, check for the services which is
provides, etc. all on the public IP.

However for any NRPE stuff, I'd like to bind it to the internal IP
address and run all the checks on the local network. The problem is I
don't know how to keep from specifying 2 host definitions for each
server (ie. an external definition and internal definition). I don't
know if it can be done, but I'd like to have one record per server, just
for clarity and to avoid confusion.

Does this make sense? Can it be done in a reasonable way? Or should I
just bite the bullet and make two host definitions per server?

Thanks for any help,
-Nick

If you believe this is an error, check the HTTP server authentication
 requirements for accessing this CGI
and check the authorization options in your CGI configuration file.

The most likely causes are that the user you're logged in as does not
have permission to view any of the information for the services you
requested, the HTTP server authentication is configured incorrectly, or
the authentication options in your CGI configuration file are incorrect.

A little information on how you've set the auth pieces up would help a
lot in figuring out what the problem is.

Firstly many thanks to all that helped me, I finally got distributed servers
up and running.

It seems that there is a lot of discussion about distributed clusters.
Is there a current discussion forum linked to development for this, and how
do I join it

I would like to return some input and help make future versions of nagios
even better

Cheers

I'm not sure what and how to write the central server configs for the
passive results coming in from the remote server.

The Distributed Monitoring section of the documentation goes into
pretty specific detail. On the central server, you essentially just
need to make sure that passive checks are enabled program-wide and for
the services you are submitting results for, that nagios is checking
for external commands and that NSCA is configured to write to nagios'
external command file. You must have a matching host{} and service{}
definition for every passive result that you will be submitting.

And on the central server the nagios.cmd file stays at 0 bytes so nothing
seems to be getting through

Any idea on how to debug where things are going wrong

Hello

I have 2 nagios servers ( 1 central and 1 remote) on different networks
performing active checks. Everything works well with the email notification
and both web interface.

I am using NSCA to try and send all the results from the active checks on
the remote server to the central.

I have installed NSCA on both servers and I can get send_nsca to send out a
test to the central server, I see it in the nagios.log

What I don't get is how to get send_nsca on the remote nagios to pick up the
results of the active checks and send them to the central server

It is vital that the remote server has its own web interface and send out
notifications as the ITC at the remote site need to see only the

Running fedora 11, nagios 3.1.2 and nsca 2.7.2

Many thanks

servers. I can add these to a hostgroup then check each individually :

http://SERVER/nagios/cgi-bin/status.cgi?host=HOSTNAMEstyle=detail

http://SERVER/nagios/cgi-bin/status.cgi?host=HOSTNAME2style=detail

http://SERVER/nagios/cgi-bin/status.cgi?host=HOSTNAME3style=detail

Is there any way to have 3 different host details such as the above but
on one page ? So I can have a quick glance of exchange 1, 2 and 3

Thanks in advance,

Nick

[Nagios-users] Viewing problems of one type

2009-04-21 Thread Nick Urbanik
Dear Folks,

Thank you for a great monitoring system.

We have nagios monitoring a large number of hosts (1646). We
want to be able to display problems of one type: specifically, the
service is 'Web Certificates'; I would like to restrict the status
display to just these.

Please can you suggest a way of doing this?

We are using Version 1.2.

[Nagios-users] combining nagios servers

2009-03-10 Thread Nick
Hello

I have several nagios servers on different sites all with 2 ethernet cards
1 public and 1 private IP address.

They are used to monitor services and hosts on the internal subnet I want to
keep it so the local sites can see their own nagios servers web interface.

Is there anyway I can combine the output of all the nagios servers to my
office on my nagios server.

I have a separate screen that displays the Service Detail web page and I
look at the top of it.

Host and service status totals if everything is green I know there is no
problems throughout the whole system.

Would be nice if I could see all the nagios servers outputs on my 1 screen

Any ideas are welcome

Many thanks

Nick

Re: [Nagios-users] Timeperiods

2009-03-08 Thread Nick Price

Hello

Im running nagios 3.06

I have a host that needs to have 2 people in the notifications.

The notification for the 2 people should ONLY be sent out during work hours.
(mon-fri 9:00-17:00)

The problem is that the 2 people are in different world timezones

How do I configure nagios so it can handle this difference in timezones for the
notification for the same host

I dont want to run several instances of nagios I need everything in one web
interface at the end

Also is there a maximum to how many hosts and / or services that can be
monitored by nagios

Many thanks

[Nagios-users] FW: Timeperiods

That is one way of doing it, means changing 2 times per year for DST.

Is there a nagios wish list I can send this to and maybe in a future
version this can be programmed in.

Many thanks

I don't know if there is a better way to do this but what comes to
mind first is to just create two different timeperiods and assign them
to each contact. Assume one person and the nagios server are in CST
and someone else is UTC --

define timeperiod{
nameworkhours-cst
timeperiod_name workhours-cst
monday 09:00-17:00
tuesday 09:00-17:00
wednesday 09:00-17:00
thursday09:00-17:00
friday 09:00-17:00
}

define timeperiod{
nameworkhours-utc
timeperiod_name workhours-utc
monday 14:00-22:00
tuesday 14:00-22:00
wednesday 14:00-22:00
thursday14:00-22:00
friday 14:00-22:00
}

You'd have to change the UTC guy 2x a year to deal with DST time
changes if you honor that in your timezone. There are much more
complex time definitions you could create that could deal with DST if
you wanted.

Also is there a maximum to how many hosts and / or services that can
 be monitored by nagios

Depends a lot on hardware you're running it on and the types of checks
you are using. You'll hit some points where you'll probably need to
change your way of doing things (i.e. at ~10,000 active checks you
might need to start looking at moving those to passive checks), etc.
There are others on the list running instances with many 10's of
thousands of checks that might be able to offer insight into those
kinds of things. If you expect to grow large, I'd recommend starting
out with a simple distributed setup and expand as needed.

Queue the events that were unsendable and send them when it becomes
possible. Merlin is designed to handle frequently failing links with
sometimes extremely long downtimes (it already does this), but it's
not really production level stable yet, so I wouldn't recommend using
it for this (unless you're interested in completing it yourself or
sponsoring me or op5 to do it for you, ofcourse).

 More about merlin at http://git.op5.org/git/nagios/merlin.git

pnsca, another module available there, can probably be trivially
rewritten to stash alerts and whatnot with very good performance.

  I am thinking of
getting the remote nagios servers to send email alerts to an account
 on
the central nagios server then trying to get an alert generated
based
 on
the contents of the email, has anyone tried this before ?

Or does anyone have any better ideas for solving this problem ?

That depends on what your end-goal is, really. Do you want only one
 server
to send notifications, or do you want your central server to be able
to
generate reports from the data sent in from the slave systems?

If only one server should send notifications, I'd recommend using a
 solution
with lower latency that gathering everything and shipping it as an
 email.
One-way UDP communication would be one solution here, I guess, but it
 does
require the network to be physically present at all times (and there's
 no
failure detection what so ever, as UDP is a fire-and-forget protocol).
Merlin would help in this case (although it can't send over UDP yet).

If it's for reporting reasons, you'd be better off sending the
logfiles
 as
emails when they're being rotated and then merging them together on
the
master server. That means you can't get *accurate* reports more often
 than
the logs are rotated, but since you'll need to sort-merge them
anyways,
that's still going to be a problem.
Neither merlin nor NSCA can help here, I'm afraid, as entries in the
 logs
would get completely jumbled unless you sort-merge them before taking
 generating reports from them.

Thanks for the detailed info Andreas. I still think the nagios event -
email - nagios server is the only realistic solution. It's not perfect
as mail servers can fail and mail can get delayed but it's the best we
can do at the moment.

Cheers,
Nick.

Im setting up a filter in postfix on the central nagios server so that
all emails coming in will go thru the filter, the filter will run a
script to call send_nsca.

So I'll have nagios clients - nagios - send_email - primary nagios
server - postfix - mail filter - send_nsca - nagios

If I get this working I'll treat myself to curry :)

Thanks for the plug, but Opsview is not really suitable for this. We
have distributed monitoring out-of-the-box, but it requires the
permanent connection between slaves and the master which Nick says he
hasn't got.

If you will have temporary connections (that go up and down), we have
been thinking whether we can do batched results from slaves, though
this is quite a big job as it requires changes to a lot of components
(Nagios, NSCA, NDOutils, and our datawarehouse). Let us know if you
fancy sponsoring this work.

Otherwise, why can't you just have notifications from the other servers?
Do you need to correlate with your central server?

monitoring andfreshness alerting

Hello,

I am using Nagios v2.3 with passive service checking and I am having
problems getting freshness to work in exactly the way I want.

Our external scripts which check the services write to the Nagios
command file every minute. I want Nagios to alert me if there is no
status check for the service after 5 minutes, then every 60 minutes
while the status remains stale.

However very frequently Nagios is alerting me despite a status being
received within the freshness_threshold, e.g.:

[1217966117] EXTERNAL COMMAND:
PROCESS_SERVICE_CHECK_RESULT;servera;webservice1;0;Active sessions 3
[1217966165] EXTERNAL COMMAND:
PROCESS_SERVICE_CHECK_RESULT;servera;wesbervice1;0;Active sessions 3
[1217966191] Warning: The results of service 'webservice1' on host
'servera' are stale by 50 seconds (threshold=90 seconds). I'm forcing
an immediate check of the service.
[1217966201] SERVICE NOTIFICATION:
nick;servera;webservice1;CRITICAL;notify-by-email;No servera
webservice1
status report inside the freshness interval

I think part of the problem is Nagios is using X in stale by
X seconds
rather than freshness_threshold or normal_check_interval to run the
freshness check. How do I change X, disable these warnings, and/or at
least get Nagios to run the freshness check at (or near) the actual
threshold?

Also I've set max_check_attempts to 7 but Nagios doesn't always seem to
reset the SOFT count back to after a status of the service is
received -
possibly a symptom of the same problem.

I've tried various combination of freshness_threshold,
normal_check_interval, retry_check_interval, and max_check_attempts to
no avail. Anyhow the relevant portions of my Nagios configuration are
below.

Any suggestions about configuring Nagios to do what I want to achieve?

Re: [Nagios-users] SMS notification commands

2007-11-29 Thread Nick Pratley
Thanks for the reply Peter, however that isn't what the problem is in my
case. The /var/spool/sms/outgoing directory on that server is in fact
world-writable. And as I said I can run it from the command line
successfully while logged in as the nagios user, which I wouldn't be able to
do if the permissions were not right.

Keep in mind that SMS Tools is running on a different server, and I'm using
SCP to copy the file to that server.

Any other ideas?

Thanks anyway.

Having just solved this problem this week:

chmod g+w /var/spool/sms/outgoing
chgrp nagios /var/spool/sms/outgoing

This should enable nagios to write to the directory using your script.

Peter.

[Nagios-users] SMS notification commands

2007-11-29 Thread Nick Pratley
Hi, I need to be able to send notifications via SMS in the event that the
email servers are unavailable, or the internet connection is down. There is
a server on the same network as the Nagios host that has a modem installed
and uses SMS Tools 3 to send messages. To send a message all I need to do is
place a file in a certain directory on that server, in a simple format, and
it does the rest.

So, I created a script called 'notify-by-sms' in /usr/local/nagios/libexec
which is as follows:

TMPFILE=`/bin/mktemp notify.XX`

/bin/echo -e $1 $TMPFILE

/usr/bin/scp $TMPFILE sms-server:/var/spool/sms/outgoing/

rm $TMPFILE

The script is owned by the user nagios and is executable. To run it I just
need to pass it a string like To: phonenumber\n\nmessagebody as the
only parameter. If I run it from the command line while logged in as nagios
it works fine.

I have the following in commands.cfg which I adapted from
notify-service-by-email and notify-host-by-email:

# 'notify-host-by-sms' command definition

define command{

command_name notify-host-by-sms

command_line /usr/local/nagios/libexec/notify-by-sms To:
$CONTACTPAGER$\n\n* Nagios *\n\nNotification Type:
$NOTIFICATIONTYPE$\nHost: $HOSTNAME$\nState: HOSTSTATE$\nAddress:
$HOSTADDRESS$\nInfo: $HOSTOUTPUT$\n\nDate/Time: $LONGDATETIME$\n

}

# 'notify-service-by-sms' command definition

define command{

command_name notify-service-by-sms

command_line /usr/local/nagios/libexec/notify-by-sms To:
$CONTACTPAGER$\n\n* Nagios *\n\nNotification Type:
$NOTIFICATIONTYPE$\n\nService: $SERVICEDESC$\nHost: HOSTALIAS$\nAddress:
$HOSTADDRESS$\nState: $SERVICESTATE$\n\nDate/Time:
$LONGDATETIME$\n\nAdditional Info:\n\n$SERVICEOUTPUT$

}

I see the following in /usr/local/nagios/var/nagios.log, as an example (I
have replaced some things with ...):

[1196327641] SERVICE NOTIFICATION:
contactname;servername;SyncServer;CRITICAL;notify-service-by-sms;CRITICA
L - Error Fetching http://ipaddress/sync/ds [503] Service Temporarily
Unavailable

however the sms is not received. It does not even appear in the log on the
SMS server which indicates the script isn't running or isn't able to scp the
file to that server. I am using public key authentication to negate the need
for a SSH password to be entered.

Any ideas what the problem could be, when it runs manually from the command
line but not through the nagios daemon?

Thank you,

Nick

etc/hosts.cfg: timeperiod_name 24x7
I am only finding the one file. Oddly if I comment out the 24x7 timeperiod
segment it then complains about this time period not being defined. I am not
sure where to go from here. This is on a slack 10 system with a newer kernel
and packages pretty much the same as slack 11. let me know if you need any
additional info.

[Nagios-users] Could not connect to MySQL database

2007-04-05 Thread Nick Weisser
Hi there,

I've installed Nagios 1.3 under Debian Sarge. The nagios.log file states
that

[1175786914] Error: Could not connect to MySQL database '' on host ''
using username '' and password 'XX' for downtime data!

I found this FAQ entry and followed the instructions

http://www.nagios.org/faqs/viewfaq.php?faq_id=228

but still the error message remains the same.

From where is Nagios taking username and password?

Any pointers as to where else I could look would be very much appreciated.

Cheers, Nick

Try a newer version of the plugins, looks like a problem i had a few
days ago where check_nagios is expecting to use /var/status.log but
it
needs to use the status.dat file

recompile the plugins and it should be fine.

 Ben

Actually I'd lean more towards it being a case of old and busted.
When I
hit this problem it wasn't a matter of the status.dat location (since
-F
/path/to/status.file is one of the _required_ CLI args). Upgrade to
Plugins 1.4.3 and you'll be ok. If you don't want to upgrade all your
plugins at once just compile the package and copy the check_nagios
binary
out instead of running make install.

Yes, its a required arg but im sure the format of status.dat has
changed, it used to be status.log and im fairly sure it changed format
 along with its name.

 Ben
 -f

I'm sorry, I misread part of your post. To me, recompile the plugins
meant re-run make and make install, not install the new version. We
were
both saying the same thing.

I wonder if this fact needs a FAQ because the fix was non-obvious to me.
I
spent far too much time running straces and the like. But I didn't
bother
to read the C code.

[Nagios-users] Referencing hostgroups in hostgroup definitions

2006-10-26 Thread Rogers, Nick
Hi folks,

I have devices on my network that are dumb (unmanaged switches, DSL/cable
modems, etc.) that I have host definitions for but set to never notify.
These devices are simply entered to get displayed in the Status map diagram
to show parent device relationships. I have a hostgroup defined that
explicitly lists the dumb hosts in the members directive named DUMBHOSTS. I
want a hostgroup that includes everything except the dumb hosts so I can
have just the responsive hosts listed in the Service Status Details For All
Hosts page. I tried !DUMBHOSTS in the members directive, but Nagios
complains about

Error: Could not find any host matching 'DUMBHOSTS'
Error: Could not expand member hosts specified in hostgroup (config file
...)

Any ideas on how to do this?

Thanks in advance,

[Nagios-users] Trouble creating dependencies

2006-08-17 Thread Nick Wales
Hi,

I'm having trouble creating dependencies on my fairly small scale
nagios installation

I am monitoring our remote office, which has a DSL link and VPN
between here and there. As its DSL and on occasion goes down I'm
trying to get nagios to stop monitoring the fileservers over there too.

I have created my dependencies.cfg file in etc/ edited nagios.cfg so
the dependencies file is being looked at.

As a start I'm just trying to get nagios to not look at the 'Check
host down' service on one of the fileservers over there, so here is
my initial dependency within dependencies.cfg

define servicedependency {
dependent_host_name fileserver
dependent_service_description Check Host Alive
host_name curtainroadgateway
service_description Check Host Alive
execution_failure_criteria c
notification_failure_criteria c
}

Everything is critical at the moment because the office is empty and
the fileservers are off, also the dsl is disconnected, yet nagios
continues to show critical for the fileserver.

When starting up nagios there are no errors.

Any ideas what the problem is?

Thanks

Nick
